"A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMOG or simply MMO) is a video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and feature at least one persistent world."

The first question you might be asking is: Why Wikipedia?
Answer: The people who would argue against me likely cite everything that Wikipedia has as fact (Even though they keep moderating my correct definition of juice box... Bastards).
The second question you might be asking is: Why do you care about defining this on this forum?
Answer: Some people on this forum do not know what MMO stands for, or what a MMO is. These people improperly call things MMOs that are not MMOs. Consider it like being trying to teach a child that a tree is not a rock, sure they could get through life calling every rock they see a tree, but people would, probably correctly, think they were stupid... And it would be annoying.
The third question (which should have been your first, shame on you) might be: What is a MMO?
Answer: Massive (or Massively) Multiplayer Online game, some call these MMOGs, but I can't really think of anything that people would use the word "multiplayer" that didn't involve a game. Anything room based (A relatively small amount of players) that does not have a persistent game world is NOT a MMO. Just because a lot of people play it does not make it a MMO.
Here is a list of some games that are NOT MMOs:
Guild Wars, Diablo 1 2 and soon 3, Gunz, Rakion, Counter-Strike, Team fortress and Team fortress 2, Warcraft 3, etc.
Here is a list of some games that ARE MMOs:
World of Warcraft, Neosteam, Rohan online, Requiem: Bloodymare, FLYFF, Maplestory, etc.
I'm not saying don't talk about games that are not MMOs in the Free MMORPG section (as some games which are not Free MMORPGs might really be interesting to the majority of people who browse this section [Diablo 3]) just please do not in your posts classify them as MMOs and do not argue with the people who correct your improper usage of the term MMO.
