We would love to hear any comments you have in the up coming weeks on the reputation system. Any ideas on how to fix it would be great as well.

Awesome! This will really show the good/bad sides of OnRPG lol
Gotta agree. Alot of factors that can affect the rep power huh?
Also, gotta love that karma saying :3

Actually I have no idea if the system works retro-actively... :p. So someone is gonna have to test it. Note that users max out at a maximum of 5 points that your able to give.
Also it took a long time due to a lot of factors. We needed to find a way to properly implement the system without losing control to the members. I think with what we have done we have all the control necessary. Now post costs will hopefully not mean as much as they use to.

Now lets hope there isn't games like, rep game where you rep the ppl above you and then the next person has to rep you along with other ppl etc etc etc >_>

I highly doubt people are going to use (or even remember to use) this system. We've had it for a few years now, and since the Staff never embraced it, I doubt you'll see many users using it. Even if people do use it, it'll mainly be the people in the General Section because all they do is chill and talk.
My personal opinion? I think it's going to end up as a popularity contest. The people with the most rep points are always going to be the admired, popular, and old members who post frequently in the General Section.

Remember though, guys. This isn't an excuse to down-grade everyone with whom you disagree with. You should only give negative rep when they are trolling/spamming/acting like a general dickwad, etc.

Wowowowowow! <333333 SOUNDS AWESOME!
I love when there are updates to the forum like this. It makes me all tingly inside. :)
So, we only get 5 points to distribute? And, once they are gone, they are gone? Am I reading that right?
I think (maybe) there should be a way to regenerate them. Maybe like every 3 months...so that way, people don't burn them up all at once, and it won't get lost in peoples minds because they don't have points anymore.
But, good call! Thanks a lot for working on this for us. It'll make everything more interesting here! <3
(and, it will make me feel better about my recent infraction! T_T)

What? No...
A max of 5 points per person every time you give reputation. The way around abuse is to limit that amount of times you can give reputation in a day, and the number of people you must give reputation to in order to rep the same person again.

Benefits will depend on the amount of reputation you receive and what we decide to do. Some things can be added colors to names, change in title, added space for signature. None of these are official but just a few things we could do.

How is reputation calculated, like the amount we have right now? I see some people with 25, others with 0, etc.
lothia
07-13-2008, 03:34 AM
Some people have 0 because of when they joined which is something we might have to deal with. Others have 10 because for most of OnRPG's time people started with 10. And anytime before that people have been receiving Rep from Moderators which means the reputation didn't reset. The calculation is simple, each member gives a certain number of reputation each time they give someone reputation, from 0 - 5 (0 is for people who do not meet the qualification) People can start giving rep as early as 10 posts but only will give 1 rep each time. Once a member has reached a certain amount of reputation, post count and length of stay. If a moderator gives you rep I believe you will receive 5 rep, if a Admin gives you rep you get +10 rep.

I might of missed something but couldn't people abuse this reputation by repeatedly clicking on the reputation button? or something similar to MS where people randomly defame people for no reason? then everyone will be mad and cause chaos.

People could abuse it but we can catch it, we can see who gives who reputation as well as you should not be able to give the same person reputation one after another but I have not retested this. We believe that if people are abusing the system it will be reported, such as if someone keeps giving negative feedback someone will say so or if someone amazingly gets +100 rep in no time it will be found.
wow, I just noticed it was back... But wth is up with my reputation? I've got like more than 30 points... But I've only got like 3 rep comments in the user cp...
Never really liked the rep system, cause I feel it often becomes more of an e-penis battle on forums with it. Everybody is like "Behold my giant rep-bar and respect my authority".
But onrpg seems to sensible for that... Or rather, I don't think people here care.

IMHO I dont like these types of systems, because someone can negative rep you and pull some asshat of a reason to give you it....
Also this makes it kind of like a popularity contest, if I see a guy with 30 rep and a guy with 10, odds are the guy with 30 will be liked more...

How the hell do you give rep? Im confused.
lothia
07-15-2008, 12:25 AM
Well there are a few problems with what you people are saying. First Xeno your member type is ex Staff or something, which means Sandy might have accadently disabled your reputation from showing. As well it wouldn't be a popularity contest because anyone can give rep, and the purpose of giving rep is from a post or topic that was well thoughtout or informative. So if the "popular" people are those that give the most information and most helpful posts then yes it is a popularity contest. As well if someone gives you negative feedback and you do not see it as being correct than you can simply report it, wow a Staff member looks it over and bam it's solved.
To the last persons Q, look next to the report button under the users profile name and information, you will see a scale, press it.

The answer is in page 3 or 4, i think? I'm confused a bit, though. Does it have anything to do with registration date? Or some other factors?
lothia
07-16-2008, 03:55 AM
Hm, I believe it does, however I cannot be certain it is the truth. For a while people were saying their display showed 0 reputation when they joined and we were unsure of the answer. However Gabe might have said at one time he reduced the beginning reputation, this is all speculation because I do not fully remember what had happened. However I will talk to Sandy and see what we can do, perhaps raise some peoples up to 10 if they are low enough that we know they have just gotten + rep and not a lot of - rep.

I can't seem to see any connection with others that have 0 reps. Like paladinn, he registered 2006, same as Civil, I think. Maybe some other factors. Fullmetal is kind enough to give me 3 reps lol

I got a lot of rep for my MSPAINT thread...cool.
Now, most of these are green. When I look at the proporties of the image, it says something along the lines of "reputation_pos", which I assume is for "positive"...
Now, what is this gray one? When I look, it says "reputation_balance" or something like that? How do you give medium reputation? Lols.

TheJESTERJ

Red is negative, blue is neutral, and green is positive. Neutral has no effect (i think), while positive increases, negative decreases.
Example (also funny story):

That post that got negative rep was in that what annoys you thread, where I said I hate when people use the ellipsis incorrectly. I, as always, blame Cingal for this negative rep and demand he be stripped of his Cingalite status and banned. Also lol.

I think there is a certain rep amount that someone must have before they can positively rep someone, and before they can give someone negative rep. So until then it stays neutral.
This rep system is getting out of hand. And it's very annoying. Anything you do, less rep. Strange how the "cool kids" with the same jokes over and over never get less reps.
For example, all my - reps are ridiculous. One was because I tried to cheer up that tense Humans evolved from apes thread. One was a Soviet Russia (Hell, i wasn't even the first to say it! And atleast mine was original). One was a "flame", sometimes the truth costs.
Ease on the reps people and actualy give them when they're actually deserved!

I seriously would like to know what the point to the rep system is, lol? What was it intended to do? do we get a reward for having a higher rep? Punished for a lower one? Are we supposed to agree more with those who have a higher rep than those with lower? Are we supposed to get some sort of self accomplishment because of it?

Rep on most forums is taken seriously as far as I can see here it is purely a popularity contest, if you make funny/idiotic posts you get a +rep if you make a post someone doesn't agree with you get -rep it it shouldn't work like this but, this community is about as good as a rapist convention too mother of 4 young children.

Truth be told, I don't see why we need a numerical value to determine our credibility as posters in the first place, even more so when the value is based off of other users. I really couldn't care less about something in my life when it comes to my own rep count, lol. I find it funny that people here actually think it means something. I've already seen people say things like "haha look at that guys rep count it's -1!" If that wasn't so sad it would be funny.
I don't plan on using the system at all because when I see how a lot of people use it here it's just stupid and childish. And you are right, from what I've seen, the majority of people really do just rep people they like and derep those they don't. It's amazing what you can find out by reading people's posting history here. I swear it's like the forum version of maplestory. To be honest, I think the rep system is making the community worse than better and I assume the original intention wasn't for it to be like that. Can anyone honestly say that things have gotten better since the rep system was added?
I'm going to say it for the record, I think the reputation system here is a joke. I'm going to continue to say a lot things that a lot of people don't like as long as I'm in bounds with the rules. No number is going to change that, lol. If I could, I would opt for the lowest possible rep value to save people the trouble so we can get to what really matters on a forum; people sharing information and opinions relevant to the topic.

i think this was a measure to prevent the servers from crashing due to too many people repping me at the same time.

They need to change it so when someone reps or de-reps you, the comments has to be valid. The comments cannot be empty, gibberish crap like "fsdlkffdsnue" or unclear. If any of these applies, it can be reported. This will prevent people from de-repping other people for the hell of it.
I got 2 negative reps and positive reps and I don't even know why. 2 of the comments were blank and 1 of it was "No!" It'll be helpful if you guys actually tell me what I did wrong.

You can report that to an Admin and they'll fix it for you.

The reputation is awesome except the neutral thingy. It should only be + and -, a neutral rep is pretty nonsense i.m.o.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't believe that retired staff members have the ability to add or detract rep from anyone.
This is a severe disappointment to me, I really want to see more people rage about negative rep in every other post.

The repping is a good feature but it would be cool if it could be more then just a comment, and a -point(s) or a + point(s)
