While some cities have bans on new fast-food establishments, they typically are for aesthetic reasons or to protect local businesses. Ms. Perry's initiative seems to be a rare instance in which a major city brings health issues into restaurant zoning. The fast-food ban would last a year, although Ms. Perry hopes to make it permanent. On Tuesday, a committee will make a recommendation on the measure before sending it on to the full city council for a vote.

With the ordinance, Los Angeles is tapping into a tougher attitude toward fast food that is emerging at city halls around the country. Cities have begun banning ingredients, regulating menu information and now dictating whether restaurants are healthy enough to open in their communities. Advocates say the measures are crucial in the fight against obesity, diabetes and other diseases and health conditions. Foes say the rules go too far, violating important freedoms.

Yes, fast food typically isn't healthy, but I am a fucking American. If I want to shove 2 lbs. of lard down my throat that is my prerogative. Fast food doesn't cause obesity, that fat ass's two hands and mouth does.

Solution: Don't like it, don't eat it.

I only ever eat fast food if I'm out with friends or something, which is somewhat rare really.

I don't eat much fast food, it is really bad for you.

I can see how this would be very inconvenient though. If I'm out with friends or on a road trip or something I'm obviously not going to take a fucking lunchbox and I'm not gonna go pay $20 for a meal at a sitdown place.

Fatties will always find a way to stuff their face with unhealthy garbage so in the end it's really pointless anyway.

Same here, I hardly ever eat fast food as it is, but if I want to eat a grease sandwich with extra bacon I don't need some nanny state overlord telling me that I can't because it isn't good for me....which probably isn't too far off.

This is just another way for retarded busybodies to control what other people do.

My mom used to stop at McDonalds from time to time. I've figured out it just makes me fucking sick. Seriously, when I eat it, I lay down to go to bed and have acid reflux for like an hour. Gah.

Now the only shit like that I will touch is Taco Bell. At least there they have chicken thats not gray inside.

I just recently tried a hamburger from Burger King for the first time in my life, that was actually near two months ago. Then, within the last month, I tried my first burger from McDonalds.

I was expecting more. They are pretty addictive though, however Burger King is better. I can see why some people love it, and the fact that I can basically get four cheese burgers, which is two double cheese burgers, for $2 is a steal!

I still don't get it very much though. If it's lunchtime and I am driving by a McDonalds I'll stop and get something, but it's not like I'll stop anytime I see one.

It's highly fascist, but there is a real benefit to banning fast food establishments. Parents need to stop being so fucking lazy and spend the time to cook, but what more convenient than to just be able to drive and pick up food that's already made for you. To top that off they make it designed to taste good for us no matter how unhealthy it has to be. Then you have a generation that compares food by taste, and of course fast food will win if you eat a lot of it. It becomes a lifestyle that's hard to move away from. I eat fast food maybe once a week, well that depends really, that could be anywhere from picking up something from the grocery store to a sit down. If I fill myself on literally fast food, like a Burger King, it makes me feel sick, almost as if I injected fat into my arteries.

My mom cooks me healthy foods and GREAT dinners everyday.
Sometimes, when she doesn't she often gets Wendy's or Pizza for me. Or Chinese food.

Another reason not to move to California. I swear, if this country goes down the shit-hole, they will probably be leading the way (Either them, or Florida. That place it's fucking nuts as well) I can only hope this shit doesn't actually get passed.

It may seem like "oh, well, it's unhealthy" but what the fuck right do you have to decide who gets to eat what? If I want to smoke than I god damn will. What I shove into my body is my damn prerogative. These old-ass fucksticks who think they know better than the entire world how we should live our lives need to have sharp, spiky rods shoved up their asses.

Sorry for the vulgar language. This shit just pisses me off.

Fast food is massed produced cheaply by large companies such as McDonalds. Cows used for meat are treated very inhumanely. They live a short life crammed in cubicles in which they have no room to move. They live in their own feces and are fed parts of other animals (including other cows) along with repulsive growth hormes as well. When they are killed, they suffer excruciating pain, causing adrenaline and related hormones to leech into the meat that you eat when you order a buger at your fast-food joint. Even though the meat is irradiated (which destroys nutritional content), it's still very common to detect actual feces in the patty.

Soft drinks and other beverages offered at fast-food "restaurants" are always laden with harmful chemicals that will destroy your body when consumed. The flavors in the drinks are all artificial. This goes for all sodas as well. If you see "natural flavors" on a nutritional label, please keep in mind that this is a term that was created by lobbyists. You'll never actually find a natural flavor in these products: any chemical that once came from a living organism is allowed to be called a "natural flavor," even though it may no longer contain any essence of its origin. Not to mention the products will always have food additives such as High Fructose Corn Syrup and some even contain MSG (it's not banned by any means).

Please note that these companies want to keep you fat and addicted to their food because it allows them to profit. A more detailed explanation of what I listed above can be found in the book Fast Food Nation.

Theres like 1 in aveiro, and a few in porto. (and probably alot more in lisbon)

And, back on topic, IMO the people that usually bash fast food, and saying that it screws people lifes etc, are crazy.

And Taco Bell is some nasty shit. I went to one in my neighborhood and when my friend ordered a taco she started scratching her crotch as she was asking if we wanted lettuce on our tacos. Nasty...

And as for McDonalds and BK, just watch Supersize me. You'll never, ever, want to eat it again.

XD haah? well another thing that pisses me off about the whole argument with fast food is that there are people who actually dont give a crap or who arent affected by the thousands of calories inside this stuff because of high metabolism

then theres the fact that the company is giving people what they want and theyre being criticized XD overindulgence has always been the users responsibility, such as with...MMORPGS XD where people invest needless amounts of times in nothing, or smoking, or anything else thats harmful if you get addicted to it XP if people ate mcd's once a week, played MMORPGs for a few hours a week, or only smoked a few cigarettes a day, we wouldnt bitch about the effects XP however, its a persons choice to make an addiction out of it, and to in-turn blame the provider is obviously taking the easy way out XP and whos to say a ban won't just allow them to find a NEW fix for their problems?

XP and like i mentioned, we have enough of a problem with unemployment these days, and how many millions of fast food restaurants are there in the US alone? XD where will they all go?

all in all, im not amused XP

Banning fast food restaurant's won't change anything either, cause they are not the problem. They are part of the problem, but banning them won't help one bit.

The problem, the reason why America is so fat, is all the substitutes in the food.

Corn syrup instead of sugar. Corn syrup can not be processed by our body and is instead stored directly into our body in it's current state, instead of having our body convert it into energy.
Hydrogenated Fat instead of natural animal/vegetable fat. Hydrogenated Fat also, unlike animal and vegetable, can not be correctly broken down by our body.

There are so many man-made ingredients that are now put into our food instead of the real stuff, simply because it saves the company some money.
Thing is, our bodies can not digest a lot of those substitutes. Instead, they damage and harm our body.

That is what needs to be banned from all restaurants and pre-proccessed food.
Not that they should stop the sales of the item itself, but it shouldn't be in a completed food package, be it a meal you ordered at a resturant, a bag of chips, or a can of soda.

Now, if you want to cook up something and thrown in corn syrup or what ever, ok. Your choice.
But people shouldn't be forced to consume something that is toxic for them, simply because it's cheaper than the real thing.

XD if you ban or substitute those products, they will not taste the same and the companies will lose business, and people will go to restaurants where they ARE available

or even if it does taste the same, the company knows that real products are a lot more expensive than fake products, so they'd have to compensate in some way

XP also, we all mention fast food restaurants, but did you know those chain 'Family' restaurants arent much better? XD are you telling me we are going to police the entire restaurant industry?

No, no, see, thats the thing, they taste the same. Thats why they were picked as subsututes, because they both taste the same and when you cook with them, they behave the same, and are cheaper than the real thing.
But they can not be processed by the body.

THing is, this is a new thing too. The fast food resturants did not start using those subsitutes. Corn Syrup and Hydrogenated fat are quite new things, it's just that because they are cheap (and, for some reason, approved by the FDA), they were adopted very quickly.
They won't have to compisate. They won't make as large of a profit, yea, but it's not going to send them into the red.

And, EVEN IF IT DID, that isn't a reason to feed us posion!

XD so its really just the fact that the product is cheaper to use, and if these companies would just budget in more expensive products and take the loss, we'd all be okay?

XP the price is going to be passed onto the consumer, i mean, just look at the organic market, where everything is green, non-additives, all-natural, anti-biotic-free and all that jazz, but HOLY SHIT $5 for a few slices of cheese or $8 a pound for meat?

...or $3 on double the food, at the cost of drug-induced cattle, cramped in tiny cages with milk-pumping machines glued to their utters until Old Farmer McDonald rips through them with a rusty chainsaw, lighting the stable on fire to seal in the juices, then stuffing the delicious meat between two sesame seed buns and serving it to you?

No, but there are much more healthy and cheaper alternatives (at least here).
For example, here a mcmenu big mac would cost around 5.10€, with 5€ youd eat a full meal (including soup) in a restaurant(most of these consist in local traditional food, or bbq and that kind of stuff lol) (there are usually these kinds of restaurants in malls here), sure still its not really that healthy, but not only it would be a much more complete meal than mcdonalds, but itd be reasonably cheaper (based on the content).

If people are sick of fast food making them fat, then STOP EATING FAST FOOD.

What I am sick of is people who sit in their little chairs and decide "Well, I live such a great, healthy, happy life. Everyone else should too!" And proceed to do so by banning everything they dislike in the world, on the grounds that it will make EVERYONE HAPPY LIKE ME!

No one has the right to decide what rational people should do with their bodies, even if they decide to do irrational things. I've the mind to move to Los Angeles and start an underground Fast Food movement, and undermine their Super Fat Free Society from the inside.

Close, they were Taco Bells. I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw that movie lol. It came out when I was in like Kindergarten. I'm only 21 but i feel so old.

XD exactly, PLUS when someone is offering something expensive, people will ALWAYS go for the more cheaper, efficient alternative, especially with the economy the way it is

XP would you rather spend $10 on lunch that assures you the cows were all hugged, loved and tucked in at night...

...or $3 on double the food, at the cost of drug-induced cattle, cramped in tiny cages with milk-pumping machines glued to their utters until Old Farmer McDonald rips through them with a rusty chainsaw, lighting the stable on fire to seal in the juices, then stuffing the delicious meat between two sesame seed buns and serving it to you?

the choice is obvious XP
The subsututes arn't that much cheaper.
For like a $6 fast food meal, using the real stuff instead of the fake stuff would cost the company less than an additional $1

"pricey">_>

XD well i didnt provide any actual data and neither have you, so i guess ill just say i may have slightly exaggerated

XP for comparisons sake, what are some fast food restaurants that use 'all-natural' ingredients X3 hell, even some other chains that use 100% real, natural products and doesnt cost an arm and a leg

and i say 100% real, because most things will have 'Natural + Artificial' XP

I'm sorry, but Wendy's $1.25 chicken sandwiches are godly. GODLY.

The funny thing is we watched that movie at school. At lunch time, my friend said "Hey, wanna go to MCDonalds?" and we went.

There was also this show about a guy going completely vegetarian and my mom made me watch it, so i'd see how vegetables are so dayum. Now, I do eat veggies I don't know if it's a mental thing but eating a steak with chips and no lettuce kind of kills the flavor of the steak, i'm used to eating the bad stuff first and then eating the good stuff. Proceeding, in the end the guy that went completely vegetarian lacked so many vitamins and nutrients, he was sleepier, couldn't focus...I couldn't help but burst out laughing.

nope since i don't go to High School anymore.

I am better than you

Poor cows...

If only they didn't taste so good =(

Those "facts" sound like something a fat guy looking to shift the blame off himself would come up with.

They are facts, and they have been well researched. Eat away at your own peril. If you want the actual names of the studies and reports, borrow the book that I named earlier. In fact, there are many books that document the corruption of fast food industry.

But I think your intelligence is too low to actually go and read that book without being bored. So why don't you watch Super Size Me instead?

Fast food is ok once in while when you don't feel like cooking, but eating that shit everyday is gross.

There's a McDonalds that's about a 4 minute walk from my house. I'd rather walk for 20 minutes to Wendys or Del Taco, and I do every couple days.

Ooooh a shot at my intelligence because I don't agree with you about fast food. Nice one.

And yes I would be bored because I don't give a fuck about your shitty book. I don't eat fast food every day anyway and I'm not fat and as far as I'm concerned worrying about shit like that is a good way to suck all the fun out of your life.

*Edit*

On second thought I think I will go watch Super Size Me, it looks interesting.

Watched that movie in health class. It was pretty entertaining, and that dude is pretty cool. I lol'd at the black kid yelling "KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN" and flapping his arms like a chicken.

Anyways, I saw an article in the newspaper about possibly making SAGGING a CRIME.

Dang. People will try to ban anything these days. I hardly eat fast food though. I don't think banning fast food is the right idea, but making more a more conscious effort of informing people about fast food, and making stricter rules/laws on fast food restaurants, such as amount of fat in food, or even making it a law that their nutritional value charts are up for all to see.

Justin1221
07-23-2008, 11:07 PM
Or maybe a law where people can only eat at really fatty restaurants a certain amount of times a year or month.

So, just because some fatty can't practice moderation we have to suffer?

Doesn't seem very fair to me.

It's like saying that since bigger people are too lazy to walk, we all have to give up our cars to prevent global warming

After doing a report on Global Warming, I found out that 60 percent of America doesn't even know what it is...

But that's America right? If some politician or celebirty says it's bad, then 60 percent of the idiotic people in America will believe them.

That would be kinda hard to enforce don't you think. Unless they gave everyone in the United States some sort of card they had to scan everytime they ate and that's just opening the door to a whole lot of things that we don't want.
