    Default Shockwave Flash crashes

(going through the technical problems report process, so it's looong)

Sometime at the end of last year I noticed that I can't watch Youtube videos.
The video screen is green and my browser crashes with the message 'the following program has become unresponsive: Shockwave flash."
The crashing happens the exact same way on Google Chrome and Firefox, except Firefox doesn't have an error message.
Other websites will crash like this as well, making video watching nearly impossible on this computer.
It's been like this since a Window's update, but I'm unsure which one.

My OS is Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2, 32-bit
    Processor is Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz
My anti-virus is simply Microsoft Security Essentials.
I used to have anti-malware, but since this problem it just crashes every time I try to use it. (Guessing it was out of date and I need to download an updated version)

I can provide more information if asked, just not sure what else is needed at the moment.
I'm trying to find a troubleshooting website for shockwave flash at the moment as well.
    Any help appreciated!

Have you tried an older version of flash?

have you vista up-to-date, if you already have that, IMO.. vista sucks.
