settings in the future?

I think "preventing the end" has been overdone. Someone wants to destroy or conquer the world and you stop him.. Classic IMO. The other idea sounds more original, not that it hasn't been used numerous times, but if you come up with something original and great you can pull any setting off.

I'd go for preventing, there are already a bunch of games in the aftermath setting.
