As you might guess, MMO games take advantage of external holidays in order to increase the engagement of their subscribers. World of Warcraft is no different in this respect and with the oncoming event of today – Saint Valentine’s Day and all the Hallmark gushiness that it represents – Blizzard steps nicely up to the plate.
Aside from the varied and strange history of the holiday, including Chaucer’s apparent involvement, what we have today is once again a giant marketing gimmick with the trappings of an outspoken cultural event.
I’ll be continuing for a few weeks looking at how other MMO games produce content related to Valentine’s Day, but World of Warcraft felt like a good place to start because they’ve been doing it for a while already.
Although, it would be nice to see something new.
I’ll be looking into free-to-play MMOs as well in this investigation.
