Default Can someone recommend a good text-based MMORPG?

I'm looking for a text based mmorpg to play. Does anyone know a good one, or one that at-least has a sizable amount of players?

I don't know if MUDs is what you meant by "text based MMORPG" but they are just that, and I've been playing them for years. http://www.mudconnect.com/top10.html Look through this site of that's the case. The top 10 ones are obviously popular, and if you look under "Listings" you can also browse by category, so you can choose something you really like.

Here is a list of text-based MMORPGs that I just stole from Wikipedia.. I guess this might be the type of "text-based" MMORPG you're referring too, but MUDs are good to look at too.

    • Kings of Chaos – Lord of the Rings based fantasy
    • Canon – medieval fantasy
    • Domain of Heroes – medieval fantasy
    • eRepublik – real world simulation
    • Hattrick – soccer
    • OGame – science fiction
    • Torn – crime, gang violence
    • Urban Dead – survival horror
    • Blood Wars - post-apocalyptic fantasy, vampire

I'm a big RPer on MMORGs -- what is you're looking for in the game. Everyone seems to have different interests that attract them?

    Crafting?
    Enforced RP?
    Immersive Environment?
    Pkilling allowed? Permadeath?
    What size of playerbase?
Genre? Fantasy? Futuristic? Modern? Book specific?

I can give you a few suggestions .. i just need a better direction of what you're looking for.

I'd happily plug the game I've been playing since 1995 -- but I don't think thats fair to you.

Im not too picky.. Though I'd rather not have an enforced roleplay, I do like rp.
    Immersive environment is nice.
Im not a PKer. Perma death is alright.
I large player base is nice, but not necessary.
I love fantasy and futuristic. Book specific could be nice..but, I doubt I've read many books that the games may be based on.

Check out Genesis LP Mud . www.genesismud.org Its medieval fantasy based game. Its a RP encouraged environment. Basically as long as you don't go running around constantly talking about ooc things -- you will be fine. The are several domains/lands -- some based on books -- Middle Earth, Krynn, Earthsea -- and some entirely unique. The player base is not huge. But it a very loyal and supportive group. And we're always looking for new people. There is no permadeath. The PKing is RP enforced and they don't allow player harassment, mass slaughters or newbie killing. There are lot of cool guilds and clubs to join that help develop you character and offer different skills and abilities. I use cmud client to log into the game -- but there is a client developed by the staff on the website if you want a quick way to check it out. If you have any questions -- feel free to ask.

Try Gangster Game :D sounds just like what you are looking for

    http://www.gangster-game.com?GangLeader=TheDuke

If you had chosen differently, what would you have been?

If you could have been better, how much better would you have been?

Gangster Game throws you deep in to the dark underworld of mafia and gangster dons. As you start out a wannabe, managing at best to steal ketchup from a hot-dog stand, you will soon rise up the gangster ranks and prove your true worth.

In the mafia, you are nothing without respect. Throughout 7 cities globally, you will work hard to establish your name, earn respect, and ensure nobody will want to mess with you.

Strong mafia alliances are a must, every gangster knows this. As you progress through the mafia ranks, you will soon realise your need for loyal bodyguards and friends. When you establish your own crime ring, armed with your loyal followers, you will have the chance to show the rest of the world, just what you are capable of.

If you think you could have chosen differently and survived, now is your chance to prove it!

Step foward young wannabe, show the world what you are really made of..

I'd really recommend Achaea, it's the most populated RP-focused text MMO. The playerbase is around 350 - 400 during peak hours.

Achaea's playerbase has actually dropped considerably recently. Avalon (@ www.avalon-rpg.com) predates Achaea and originated a lot of the features that are now considered staples in this type of game (player run governments, economies, warfare etc). It's a fascinating and addictive game, well worth a try.

I like how this guy made a new account to make a false claim and plug Avalon. I've been playing Achaea since '99 and the playerbase has remained pretty consistent. Some players however do switch back and forth between Achaea and the other IRE games (Imperian, Lusternia, Aetolia, Midkemia).

How're those backdoors in the Hourglass engine workin' for you guys these days?

I second @SqueezyTime's suggestion of Torn.com, it's the most in-depth text MMORPG out there!
