    Default Your 2013 predictions?

So, the OnRPG Writing staff is currently doing a series of articles that contain our predictions for 2013. So far, two of them have been released. Merry Quite Contrary's predictions can be read here and you can find my predictions for the future of the MMO industry here.

    **Updates**
Proxzor's predictions can be read here.
    Abubakr's predictions.
    Harry Cheung's predictions.

What I'm interested in is reading your opinions as to how things will go for MMO's this year. Be it individual games or the industry as a whole.

I'm predicting that this year will be comprised of mmo companies playing with various pricing models for existing games. I don't foresee many major new releases.

I have a feeling some of the more popular P2P games will try F2P, but will fail miserably, I.E. SWToR. I honestly rather just pay the monthly fee then have some BS form of cash shop.

I also have a feeling that ArcheAge will BOMB here in the west.

Only MMOs I'm looking forward to strongly this year are Lime Odyssey and Wildstar. General Gaming wise nothing has really caught my interest much considering I don't have much interest in most console games.

MMOs are more than likely going to continue to decline in general, with maybe a handful that are decent.

For payment, P2P will continue to be on the way out and instead replaced by F2P and Freemium (w/ cash shops of course), along with the occasional B2P (w/ cash shop).

For gameplay, actiony MMOs will continue to be on the rise, 'character levels' as they typically are will start to become superfluous, and instead replaced by either a gear-based system or a skill-based system whether it's like TSW, PS2, or anything else (get skill points instead of char levels, or grind the skills you like). Class system will become more open-ended, allowing for more hybridization, or at least allow for class-change on the fly instead of making a char for each class available. Themepark style will continue to be the mainstay type of MMO, however Sandbox or hybrids (if possible) will start to rise up. Also housing will make a comeback and crafting will become more important or at the very least more interesting.

As for MMOs on my radar this year, there's Wildstar, Firefall, Defiance (even though it's Rift: The FPS/TPS), and ESO (just to try it and give the developers the benefit of a doubt, especially after listening to JessieCox's talk about it, who I am more liable to agree with after sitting through his LOTR: War in the North vids. Not uber fan-boy about it, but more in the 'come on. at worst you have to hear others say "I told you so."')
    Messing around.

I doubt much will change from 2012 just more games going f2p with expensive cash shops like usual.

Hopefully some decent anime inspired mmorpg popup but we'll see.

I predict that Turbine will be announcing a new non-franchised MMORPG under a F2P model.

Wild Storm will be going into CB phase early second quarter.

Warhammer will shutdown without going to even attempt a decent F2P model.

Now as a whole, the interest of MMOs will increase. With new technology, better programming, and new minds to pick, I am sure you will be seeing the "twitch" based combat (action) more and more in your MMORPGs. They will not be like the "open worlds" where it feels massive, but in reality are moderately capped instances (channels).

With what we see in the developments of Firefall and Forge, you can see that it is possible to change the gameplay style and still enjoy the genre (massive and/or lively). Firefall gives you the FPS element in almost a true MMORPG format. Forge gives you FPS type PvP in just hard core RPG action. These two examples give you what we will be looking forward to in the evolution of MMORPGs.

As for what can be imagined? Lets use a very popular franchise from my childhood to yours... Zoids. How many of you played Zoids on the Gamecube? Now with the advancements of gamer tech/programming it is possible to see a progressive world MMORPG based on Zoids (if not, it will be the near future). Very similar action to the Gamecube version, but with similar customization and leveling as you would see in a MMORPG.

Future of MMOs will not die. It will increase in interest, but evolve... continuously.

I love that game. It's the only reason I never sold my gamecube. Well, that and Harvest Moon.

Theres already a game based on the 2012 apocalypse, a shitty game at that nor is it an MMO but it is awful enough to be fun.

    I found Zoids too simplistic.

2013 will be the year of the MOBA.

The Elder Scrolls online will be unmasked as the first GW II clone.

Next year after that we will have a nifty name for that new "genre".

    Stay frosty.

I giggled after reading this. For real though, I'm waiting for an MMO to bite off of GW2.

It wasn't to simplistic, I think. The zoids themselves were pretty complex and the game we were talking about has a pretty complex system for customizing your zoids weapons and other components. If you mean the story, well, it kinda depends. One of the anime's based on zoids centered around war and had people killing each other using zoids.

Well... there's currently an MMORPG 'drought', there's basically nothing good to play

I predict PSO2 will be very popular in NA in 2013, though

TERA will go F2P but probably won't make a comeback

Pretty nice predictions so far. Really hoping that Archeage comes to NA or Europe soon. I'm looking forward to Dragon Prophet the most currently, however.

    - Even more of the smaller F2P games will shut down. Not from a lack of players, but from a lack of "Paying" players. People will be reluctant to invest in smaller F2P games due to the fear of the games shutting down.

    - Tera will probably go F2P.

    - Lineage 2 will continue to be overrun with Bots.

    - I think there will be a big rush for game companies trying to get their F2P games hosted on platforms like Steam. They will try to add incentives for players to pay for the game up front with in-game items.

Elder scrolls online will be the biggest disappointment of 2013 other then that this year will probably be pretty terrible for MMOs im expecting a archeage announcement for NA, then lots of hype to follow, i think this year will mostly be full of hype for korean action-sandbox mmorpgs that will come out in 2014.

oh black desert you so purrdy.
