    There are players out there right now who would happily spend money on WildStar but don't know how or when. Obviously you can't spend money on WildStar right now; the game isn't out yet and won't be until spring 2014, we've just learned, so there's nothing to spend money on yet. But even when it does get released, how will anyone be able to tell the people at Carbine Studios to shut up and take our money?

    Wonder no longer because the game's business model has finally been revealed to the world. No more lying awake wondering how you'll be able to pay for the game (something you really shouldn't be lying awake wondering about anyhow). So is it buy-to-play? Free-to-play? Subscription-based? Yes. It's all three at the same time, if you look at it from the right angles.

    How does it manage that? Well, you have to understand how C.R.E.D.D. works -- starting with what in the world it is.

    C.R.E.D.D. is an acronym for "Certificate of Research, Exploration, Destruction, and Development," which nicely summarizes the game's four paths. It will also be available for purchase for $19.99 when the game launches and can be redeemed for a month's worth of subscription time. That might seem like a bit of a ripoff when you consider that a monthly subscription is $14.99 (with discounts available for longer purchases, as with most games), until you realize that you don't have to use C.R.E.D.D. yourself.

    At launch, WildStar will feature an exchange similar to the Gem Exchange in Guild Wars 2, allowing players to sell C.R.E.D.D. for in-game money. While the game does require a monthly subscription, it's entirely valid for players to earn a lot of money in the game, buy CREDD, and then continue playing without a single further expense. This makes it more like a buy-to-play game than a normal subscription model, even though you do need a subscription.

    If you'd prefer to go with more traditional approaches, you can also just subscribe to the game or purchase time cards, which is good if you're a bit low on funds in the game or just prefer doing things the old-fashioned way.

    We spoke with producer Jeremy Gaffney regarding the model; he stressed that it was designed with the expectation that players are willing to buy a new game but often don't want to subscribe over the longer term. As he sees it, this grants people who want to pay for the game a chance to get more in-game money, people who want to just play the game a chance to do so without having to subscribe, and people who want to outright buy money a legal means to do so.

    But what will happen as players acquire greater and greater fortunes, causing the usual MMO inflation? It's a problem that Gaffney hopes to overcome by making sure that there are always more things for players to sink money into, bigger projects and more bells and whistles tugging at that wallet. If player money doesn't get out of hand, the exchange prices will remain reasonable as well, even for newer players coming into the game.

    And new players are still on the minds of Carbine, which is why every boxed copy of WildStar will also come with three free week-long trial passes. The game won't have a free trial available at launch, but the hope is that players will network and entice their friends into playing the game.

    Finally, Gaffney told us that Carbine is now hoping for a release in spring of 2014, a delay from the originally announced "end of 2013 if all goes well" launch target, which means there's still a bit more time to iron out any kinks in the business model before release. But if you've ever had a light bank account and a pile of in-game money before, you'll probably be at least somewhat intrigued by the model as it stands.

    you know...you would think they would have learned that P2P model is not as effective in the modern gaming market by now...no matter how good a game is.

    Honestly they should reduce the monthly payment to $10 and go from there.
    $15 may be deemed "tried and true" but it's an ugly number to a buyer. Make it 9.99 and you'll get more sales.

    Interesting I didn't expect them to head down this road but If they are that confident in their game then good luck to them.

    After playing so many f2p games I'm actually growing more fond of p2p games BUT they aren't for everyone and next year it will have some tough competition.

    With the success of Tera going f2p I really thought they would make some type of hybrid model first the see how it goes :o

    If I pay for anything it be EQ:NEXT I liked there technology, presentation and innovation of the MMO genre, it had this wow factor, made me go this is cool and new, if they can pull off what they showed, it be amazing game.

    Wildstar is not worth a subscription fee, at least not a $14.99 one, every new MMO trying to match WoW sub model and just fails within a year, if you lowered the price to like $9.99 you would get better results, at the end Wildstar will go Free2Play just like FINAL FANTASY XIV will in time, it will not survive.

    Reality is I rather pay for WoW if I was forced to pay any subscription fee, and im sure most people feel like that.

    I'm a fan of P2P, but most people who are rabid F2P lovers either can't stick with a game or do not realize that they spend a lot more in micro-transactions than they would with a monthly fee

    So..it's like how Tera used to be? Where you can earn the subscription in-game if you don't want to subscribe? And you can make lots of in-game money buy selling subscriptions to players? Depending on how useful gold is in Wildstar, this can turn out pretty pay to win.

    Thats fairly freaking ballsy on their part. Honestly from what I've played it's really really fun and all but I don't think it even comes close to being P2P quality, nor does the current pc gamer want to deal with P2P and subs and such. I'd rather they pull a GW2 with a cash shop since atleast then they'd have a chance. I don't see this game sticking to P2P for very long and if it does, well I'd be surprised. I wish more games would do what GW1 did where you only have to pay for extra content that wasn't required at all.

    People dont pay sub is because they want digital item that last longer then 1 month. i wont pay monthly fee if the game just going to be boring after couple of days

    I'm sure people are smart enough to realize that. The money is never the issue. It's accessibility. Coming back after months and still being able to log in without paying. Getting your friends to try it out without any initial commitment. The wish to be a "casual" gamer instead of a hardcore one who feels obligated to play to get their money's worth. The list goes on.

    It's pretty risky when all of your competition is F2P or B2P.

    I just got done playing FFXIV this weekend for open beta. And i am pretty happy that i pre ordered the game already. Cause from what i got to play. It was a really cool game. And from the reaction from the servers. Out of 15 servers. Atleast 12 of them were full and no one could even log in. So I am pretty sure FFXIV will be having a good number of people to pay and play. Including me.

    They should make it like Korean Archeage.
    Free to play with different levels of subscription. Caters to many groups of MMORPGers.
    Friends can try it out free, people can cancel their sub if they're busy and hop on a couple times a week without feeling bad, and the hardcore players can pay a regular sub to have all the features. And if you're in the middle, they have that too.
    I might be wrong but I believe that's what I've heard.

    Should have gone with just Buy to Play with Cash Shop. Also am I reading this right that its $20 for 1 Month of Sub? WTF are they thinking?

    i wont buy it unless i can try it out though

    You think like me then no problem with p2p but want to try before buy thatīs why I hated Gw2 first I never in to beta and I was not ready to pay 59.99 euro for something I did not know if I would like but 5 month after release I got it from a friend who said play with me and itīs your. If people miss or dont have time to get in a beta for F sake have Trials on your mmo.

    As I understand it you can buy a $20 game card which you can sell in game, but you can also buy a $15 subscription. I have a feeling that two things are going to happen:

    1. Bots and inflation. Bots will farm a ton of money, and buy the CREDDS from people who sell them.
    2. CREDD buyers will become insanely rich. Because they're feeding the bots who farm money to buy CREDDS from them.

    Which means people with normal subscriptions are slightly screwed, especially if the armor/weapon mods require you to have a strong guild to obtain and can only be obtained at very high levels.
