Neither. But, if you must go with Windows, you want to go with 8.1 since 7 is going to be rendered obsolete and start losing support in the near future.

Know you made up your mind already but wanted to toss in I think 8 is better as well. I got used to the new layout of stuff and its way better than 7. Some of the small stuff like the task manager is a way more useful and its easier to keep things organized. I have computers that run all the OS from XP to now and it is def the best one so far and has had the least amount of issues. I had so many compatibility and random problems with vista and 7 when they first came out I hated them but they became good over time. 8 has been stable from the start though and is much faster.

I don't really need Media Center, unless Windows 8 still causes third-party codecs and VLC to crash on DVD Menus. The motherboard I have has secure boot mode options and options pertaining to Windows 8 specifically... not sure if that should be a factor since I can turn those off.

I agree get windows 8 with classic shell. But, I also recommend a SSD because then your performance will be a lot better.

At least 128GB for normal users. You need about 20GB for Windows, probably another 20-30GB for user and application settings so a 64GB one would be a tad too small.

so i can't use a cheapo free 1 gig stick from the local real estate agency ?

    geez 128gig costs over $100..
don't these big SSDs have a finite lifespan, like only 1 million read/writes before they short out....

New SSDs can read up to a few hundred of TB before failing so you don't have to worry about that.
