Default Can someone clear up what RAM actually does?

So, some of you might know I recently ordered a Sager NP8235.

Well, xoticPC had a special and they were selling 16gigs of RAM discounted for a nice price, so I went ahead and got it as well as 1TB upgrade for free.

I figured I needed it since I'm using mobile hardware, but I sort of get confused on the jobs between a processor and RAM.
Both seem to be the meat to a computer, while the graphics card and other things like the soundcard, speakers, etc. are simply the seasoning (or how you're using the 'meat').

-So, just out of curiosity, what exactly is this benefit to having 16gigs of RAM? I originally wanted 8gigs of RAM, i7 Haswell Processor and a nVidia 770M gfx card.
-And what is RAMs job specifically in dumb people terms?

Thanks. I want to eventually get to the point where I can completely understand PC hardware, so it helps a lot.

    RAM: Random Access Memory.

In dumb people terms, it's a limited but very fast type of a hard drive. It can load and hold program data for whenever it is needed. You cannot save anything on RAM, so once your PC is shut off, all the data on the RAM is gone.
    RAM cannot calculate anything.

Alright, I see. Thank you. So if I'm running an MMO with a lot of players, say a huge raid or Guild vs. Guild, RAM would help to load the different character models efficiently?

While it will help, it also depends on your CPU, GPU and HDD speed. :/ RAM just makes sure that the most important bits are loading fast.
