    Default Shores of Hazeron

So, this is one of my all-time favorite games and as there was recently a complete wipe 3 days ago (plus some major updates), I figured I would make a new post about the game.

Shores of Hazeron is an MMO4x game. 4x stands for, "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate." I would say that the game is something of a mix between Spore, Civilizations, EVE, and a space simulator. You start off by either joining or creating an empire, designing your own personal species that you play as and that will populate any cities you make, and then you explore (for resources, war, etc..), expand (colonize new worlds), exploit (find high quality and rare resources to power your empire), and exterminate (anyone you don't like).

The game offer one huge universe that spans 20 galaxies. As of right now, only two of those galaxies are inhabited as far as I know. Also, since the wipe, warp technology has yet to be discovered (at last so far), so people are currently stuck to using wormhole travel to get between solar systems. The game is still in an alpha state, but is very playable and it's completely free-to-play. You can't even donate. However, that means some areas of the game are lacking, currently the game isn't as optimized as it could be and the graphics aren't mind blowing (well, I think landscapes and solar system graphics are amazing at least).

It's very hard to give a real idea of the game without rambling on and on. I attempted to give a bit of an idea of what to expect from the game in an article I wrote earlier this year, which you can find here if you want to read more about the game.

Here are some neat statistic about the game.

There is only an average of 70-120 players online. The player base is larger than that, but it's rare to see more than a hundred people online at the same time.

Avatars - 948 (these are player characters)
Officers - 161 (these are NPCs capable of commanding ships)
Crew - 2,013 (NPCs that control the different ship systems)
    Troops - 5,098 (NPC troops)
    Passengers - 117 (NPC colonist)
Workers - 10 (No idea, really)
    Spacecraft - 714 (Player-designed and built ships)
Vehicles - 2,789 (Vehicles made in a vehicle factory - SUVs, APCs, Motorcycles)
Cities - 1,019 (As the name implies)
Solar Systems - 115,948 (Holy shit, that's huge... and a new solar system spawns with each new empire and other factors, so it's still growing)
Sectors - 12,010 (This is a grouping of solar systems, and 12,000 of those is a mind blowing number). Plus, new empires can choose to spawn in a new Sector)
    Galaxies - 20 (That's a lot of galaxies)
    Universe - 1

As you can see, the game takes the "Explore" and the "Expand" portions of 4x quite seriously. To put this into perspective, the game is 3D. And there's full atmospheric-to-space flight. That means you can fly around on your planet, and then go straight up to space with no loading screen. Of course, when closing into a planet with several large cities, you may notice a slight lag spike while they render, but it usually doesn't last long.

For those interested in trying the game, I would be more than happy to give you a hand. I am also willing to let you join my empire (currently a group of friends and I are playing together). Or, if you like, you could make your own empire and we could ally together. Or I could just help you via PMs/TS. Also, here is an extremely helpful PDF tutorial. I would suggest you follow it if you want to try the game. It might be slightly outdated in some areas, though, as the game was updated a lot the past few months.

Interesting concept but all that space with so few people sounds a little horrible.

Yeah this game is amazing, I can only wish that MMORPG's would be like this. Alas we are still stuck with shallow RPG's where the point is just grinding for the next tier of gear.

It's not so much space as you think. You run into people pretty frequently, compared to how big the galaxy is. This is due to the discovery of Wormhole drives, that allow use of the wormholes that appear around most suns. Once people get high enough tech to use warp drives, the universe will seem even smaller than it does now. Since the current version of the universe is only a few days old, no one has discovered that tech yet, though. Wont be long, more than likely.

Amitabha Industries has expanded into another solar system. Our current count is 3 habitable planets colonized (2 in our home system, 1 in the other system), and 1 moon colony. Decent for a couple days of work. We're still in the tech level 1 phase, but we're getting our tech research done in several important areas. Some of our tech is up to tech level 3-5 already, but we need everything to be that high before we can really consider ourselves to be at that level.

We've run into an empire called the Cheese Federation that has destroyed one of our craft. I'm still trying diplomatic contact before I give the order to invade their home world. They seem to be less advanced as us, and possibly inactive in comparison. Unfortunately, if they continue hostilities I'll have no choice but to send our ships to take their planet.

So far today I've been exploring all the planets and moons in our solar system, looking for higher quality resources. Once we reach Tech Level 2, we can put sensor arrays on our ships and make it easier to find high quality resources without having to actually land on a planet. However, for now, I'm stuck with using my hand scanner while in my EVA suit. It is pretty fun, though. Especially while on a low-gravity planet. Our race is capable of flying, but that does no good on a low-gravity/no-atmosphere moon. Super jumping to get around quicker is a blast.

Here's is a screenshot of my ship returning to our capital, Jalucce.

    Emperor's Log, Star Date 1/5/2014

Today was fairly productive. I completed work on a new moon colony I dubbed Crater Town, due to its location in a crater. I felt it only right to include a casino. Due to the large size of pressurized buildings, it was difficult to get everything inside the crater, and buildings roads that lead out of the crater was not an option. With some precise planning, I was able to get in all the essentials. I'm quite proud of Crater Town.

Later on in the day, while checking city reports, I noticed that several of our colonies were lacking in air, causing a harsh "gasping" penalty. To counter this, I headed to the polar cap of our home planet and set up a small city dedicated to the production of air. The city mines ice, turns that ice into water, and then created air out of the water. From there, the air is shipped up to the colonies at regular intervals. This new air production has helped relieve the colonies a bit, but I fear it may not be enough. Only time can tell. (This gasping is due to recent nerfs to air that will, hopefully, be reversed in the future. Usually one plant making air would be more than enough for several colonies. Now it seems an entire city, even if it is small, is not enough to fix the issue and that just doesn't make much sense.)

While I was working on the Air Production city, dubbed Iceland due to its location in the polar cap and the (oddly enough) quite fertile farming land that was nearby, a new friend joined the empire. Unfortunately, I was only able to give him a bit of advice before I was pulled away from the game. I'm not sure, but I fear that he may have become fed up with the game and quit before he got to give it a real chance. Hopefully we'll see him tomorrow and I can give him a real introduction to the game. The plan was to have him design a colony ship for himself, supply him with some money to purchase supplies, and then send him off into space with a PDF and start a colony somewhere.

After several attempts, I've still not been able to get into contact with anyone from The Cheese Federation. I'll continue for a portion of tomorrow, but if I can't get anyone by late evening I'll go ahead and give the order to invade. In other diplomacy news, we have have come to a mutual peace agreement with one of our neighbors. This empire is called Moleria and is an empire of space-faring molemen.

By time I get on tomorrow, we should have tech level 2 or 3 capabilities. That means our ships will have a decent jump in quality. The most noticeable will be the addition of sensors. We will also be able to support larger ship designs, with bigger crew and troop capacity. The home system is fairly established, and that's really left is to perfect defense. From here, I'll begin spreading out more and searching for higher quality resources. As I finish this, I remember that I completely forgot that I was supposed to design a space station for our home planet. The Station will make it possible to purchase goods from the planet without having to actually land on the surface.

I could go with a fairly bare-bones design, but I think I'll go with something a bit more fun. Some storage capacity with food and equipment stocked, some berths for players, a nice observation deck with some game tables, perhaps a galley. I may include a sensor array as well. It should last us until we reach tech level 7 and gain access to teleportation technology. I'm looking forward to that phase in our development, as that's when ship design really begins to become fun. That's also when energy weapon arrays (similar to what can be found in Star Trek), will begin to be used more frequently than turrets in ship-to-ship battles. Turrets will still be used, but mostly to repel borders or to fend off star fighters. Should make for some interesting times.
