    Default Hostile communities?

Well, I tried to rejoin Tumblr, only it seems that two freaking times now I find a post I like I later learn the person who created the post was bullied off of the site with death threats from people who disagreed.
    Wow.
Maybe it's my depression and anxiety but I can't handle that kind of mess.

I like Onrpg, by the way.
You guys don't threaten to kill me if you disagree, and if it gets out of line in hostility then the thread is locked and et cetera.
    It's controlled chaos I guess.

Do sites like Tumblr end up too hostile sounding simply because they have so many people?
    What about gaming communities?
Maple Story isn't exactly known for friendliness.

Have you ever turned away from a community online and in games and the like, nothing bad even happening to you, but you just don't feel comfortable there?

I would assume most, if not all communities would end up like that if not for the stricter rules you find on OnRPG compared to Tumblr. Not to mention that because Tumblr is so large, it's hard to moderate in the first place. You wanna feel suicidal? Try playing League of Legends. It won't matter if you're good or bad, win or lose, you'll still get crapped on by the community far more than anywhere else. When it comes down to it, we are all just a bunch of animals like any other. Some people will slaughter you any chance they get... Be it mental or physical...

You basically choose what you what you want to see, It's easier to ignore/avoid the toxic members of any website than avoiding negative people in RL.

I wish I could threaten people with murder and bully them on here, but the rules... :C

Actually I did never get into Lol, because it made my friends who played start to cuss each other out like mad and start insane swearing. The atmosphere was completely vile... "I was like, seems like an ok game, but this is not how I want to spend my leisure time, tnx."
So I dogged that time-sink, lol.

    @jaydude:
It's easier, to avoid, but also easier to bring on.

Tumblr, I guess it kinda depends on who you follow and what tags you track. My Tumblr experience was great in the beginning, and then I started seeing this sorta stuff everywhere: http://www.reddit.com/r/tumblrinaction
No hostility. I just find the vocal majority to be kinda stupid, which is why I don't really go on Tumblr anymore (unless I'm trying to look for specific gifs of things that I won't mention). I'd rather read 10298301394 duby threads.

    OnRPG's aight.

I'm a Bacn who loves da' booty, so on Tumblr I mostly just see da' booty.

If all you're seeing is drama and death threats on Tumblr, that might say more about you than the site as a whole.

anyway, to answer yr question, communities get that way because of shitty moderation and quality control. cf reddit and why it's an awful site.

there's some fun stuff on there, but yeah, it's like any big site, you need to pick and choose, and while a lot of people are nice, there will be some really vocal hyperactive *******s out to ruin it for everyone.

oh, and i don't play multiplayer games with pubbies because i've never had a positive experience playing that way. so why bother.

I'm thinking I just have unpopular opinions, and that's why the posts I find interest in are from people who end up bullied off Tumblr.
Maybe I just need to back away from social justice kinda stuff when I'm on a site just to look at cute lil anime gifs and fanart and I'll be less stressed.
It wouldn't be so bothersome except this happened within a week with two different posts I really liked.
Toss in some paranoia, stir it up and you've got yourself a dish of anxiety!

    I'm officially taking the internet too seriously and just need to stay away from certain sites for a while. ;_;
I was about to ask how you guys stay so calm when interacting with others on the internet, but then again most of you probably aren't piles of worry like I tend to be.

Welcome to the internet... Where nothing is taken seriously and when it is you become just little bit more stupid...

P.S: a game with a lot of players is like maplestory is the same as in real life a lot of people around and not everyone likes or is kind to you... With time you learn to adapt... Damn i miss internet caffe days where we actualy used to take it outside if you told me some rude shit and you couldnt stand for those words... How can i take you serious... Met to many people and mostly kids act big and shit but when on team speak you heard them no more... And well cod community... Its just filled with pices of trash of all ages...

I quit League of Legends five times. Now I am probably the most toxic person to exist in ranked. I figured it was my obligation to adapt to pressure.

We live in a society that doesn't accept unpopular opinions. But then again, I can see why. Humans are social creatures and like to fit in. Sharing an opinion with other people makes them feel like them belong.

Didn't OnRPG used to have a flame section, where you could openly insult each other and be as awful as you wanted? We should bring that back.

    I'm kidding, mostly.

I've never turned away from any community of nasty people or death threats. Actually, I just turn super-troll and stay longer because it pisses them off. I start posting more and more of the type of things that I get death threats & nasty comments for and have a good laugh at the PM's or messages that I get.

Think it's a person by person type of deal. I can't say I've ever been super offended over anything over the internet myself but have I gotten pissed off at games or at others playing games? Sure that happens plenty of times but I get over it fairly quickly but nine times out of ten I just blow it off fairly quickly or just find something else to calm me down. And if we're talking about Tumblr, eh, it's a questionable place at times, specially since it's like atleast 70% porn blogs. Then again I've cut the amount of people I follow down to strictly friends or people I know well from other sites, thats just me though.

I noticed this community is a lot nicer than others I've been apart of. I've even posted controversial posts/threads and still wasn't completely ostracized. The worst I experienced was Phenoca's insults, which influenced my departure from the forum for a week. For some reason, he thinks he's allowed to degrade me because we know each other.

I left previous forums because of the hostile environment. I don't agree with this "it's the internet" mentality a plethora of people use to enable online bullying. The internet consists of people who should have a sense of morality and polite social mannerisms that were ingrained into us by schools, guardians, and law.

Moreover, I think a large portion of online bullies are children who are oblivious to their own vile behavior. I was one of these people. It wasn't until my late teens and first-hand social experience that I was able to recognize my previous behavior and become capable of changing it. To this day I can't fully understand why I mistreated others, but it probably relates to how I was raised and what I was taught.

This internet generation is much different than previous generations; children need to be educated about the internet and how their behavior can affect others. Parents aren't enough and often times they don't know about the internet themselves. Therefore, I'd strongly support a mandatory educational class solely dedicated to teaching students about the internet. How it works, potential predators, how to stay safe, positive outlets, what to do if he/she feels suicidal/depressed because of imagery/comments, how his/her behavior can affect others and lead to severe repercussions mentally, physically, and legally, etc. It would also be beneficial if it taught the basic definitions of DDoSing, hacking, etc. and how to protect and prevent such occurrences.

Most, if not all, people will use the internet at some point in their lives. Better to start educating early to help prevent unnecessary victims.

I assume that's how they all look at it, just like you? *shrugs*

    Disclaimer:
Its difficult to say where I stand, but I think there is a line between destructive behavior and using swear words or insulting people. If you "outlaw" the right to have a fight about something, you take out a part that doesn't have to lead to destruction. When the goal is "destroying" something, it becomes a problem. Not when you cross that line from time to time, but when you cross over to the other side.
There are lots of communities filled to the brink with people, who are doing nothing, but harassing each other. I have been on the other side of that line too. You think you have some power, but its being stupid and sad.

I only play single player games for the most part. I generally can't stand people...in real life, or online. It is too difficult to be new to something. Nobody wants to show you and help you learn, they just wanna flip out on you when you don't have the reflexes of a ****ing cyborg and aren't able to carry out the actions you're new to as well as someone who has done it 5000 times.

    **** MMO's.
