    Default Gold Rush

I've been watching a lot of this lately. I watched the first two seasons on Netflix and was hooked. Currently on season 3.

Anyone else watching/interested in the show? I think that gets me is the (fairly) likeable guys in the show, chasing after the "American dream" of striking it rich through hard work and a bit of gambling.

The show is also known as Gold Rush: Alaska in some parts of the world.

I have seen episodes, but shows like this aren't my style. I'm pretty sure these are all pretty much fake, considering they all depend on the fact that they make enough money to continue week to week. (while being paid to be out there doing what they are doing)

There's a lot of gold mines where I live in the Philippines. People die sometimes from cave-ins and stuff. They should try filming out here instead.

i havent heard of this show before.

However, it is entirely possible to be realistic and a true depiction of people really going out there and making a go of it. Gold mining, as we know, has always been a huge gamble in life.

If you look at gold prices now compared with 10 yrs ago, gold prospecting as a career has returned as a potential way to become very rich. It is sad, in a way. It is possible things could get even worse when the gold which is easy to get begins to run out.

im surprised alaska's easy alluvial gold isn't already all mined out though... ?

Be warned - I am a major player of Regnum Online the mmo. I've been playing it for about 2 years and rarely go without logging in at least once a day. You can also look at good alternatives to Regnum such ase Aion online and Aika Online.

Primitive mining technology, combined with the harsh living conditions, has made it so a large portion of Alaskas gold has been missed.

The type of mining done in the show is "strip" mining. Where strips of "pay dirt" are dug up and then run thru sophisticated and complicated machinery to get to the tiny specs and nuggets of gold that can be fine. Several HUNDRED yards of dirt can produce less than an ounce of gold (which is worth around $1600 nowadays).

It's an expensive thing to start doing, as in the show the mining setup being started cost over a hundred-thousand dollars to get started, and continued to cost $1,300 or so between living and fuel costs to keep everything going. The first season they did pretty horribly, second season they managed to break even and make enough profit so each of the miners got at least $5,000 in the one season. I'm on the third season and this season they're running a much larger operation with two separate mines running, with a goal of reaching at least 1,000 ounces of gold. To do this they had to buy two larger refining setups, a lot more heavy machinery, and the fuel costs probably ended up tripling from the last year. Plus they had to get investors to make it all work.

I'm pretty sure that the show is "real", but maybe not entirely accurate. The show makes it seem like the only way the miners will get paid is if they make profit from mining. However, I'm pretty sure that they all get paid for their appearances on the show. I haven't actually researched that yet tho. Also, due to how popular the show is (and it is hugely popular), I'm guessing that by the fourth season they've probably started some sort of sponsor deals and/or product placement. Perhaps a company had donated equipment to the miners in exchange for the brand being shown, if they haven't received direct payment. I actually believe I may have seen a gold pan endorsed by the Hoffman crew with a picture of Todd and Jack on it at some outdoors shop a few months back.

There's actually a guy over on the Wurm forums who sold his very experienced Wurm account and then used the money to help fund his foray into gold/rare metal mining. However, his claim is of a much different nature (and smaller scale) than shown on the Gold Rush show. His mine is an actual mine, as in it's a reinforced cave. He's probably highly unlikely to make much money from it as, as far as I can tell from his blog, it's just him and it's probably not likely the mine will yield much, as I'm pretty sure a more professional company would have picked up the claim if it had been. Not saying he wont find anything, perhaps the only reason that a more professional company hasn't picked up the claim is due to the difficulties involved with that type of mining. Also, I don't think the claim is in Alaska, but I could be wrong. Here's a link to his blog for anyone interested.
