Default Can Pretty Models Save WoW?

I've played World of Warcraft for more time than I like to admit. It was... scratch that. is the game almost every other MMO takes key from.

With the new expansion, Warlords of Draenor , they're going to be be updating the visuals of the game in an attempt to modernize it. The new models are looking great- on par with lots of today's new games that share a similar art style. But is that enough?

    I don't think so.

Like I mentioned, the game is going to look good. Just looking at it, you're not going to think that it was released a decade ago. That's where the rejuvenation stops.

With no announced plans to modernize the actual gameplay, WoW is, at heart, the same game people have been playing for 10 years! It's the same gameplay that other developers have essentially been copying, tweaking, improving ever since.

Playing World of Warcraft: WoD looks to be the equivalent of a 20 year old playing with a shiny baby toy. They may pick it, give it a shake but then they realize it's a f*cking baby toy.

The gameplay in WoW can't even come close to comparing to the games that were spawned because of it. It may appeal to people who have never played a decent modern MMO but it's most likely not going to bring back old players or convert players who are already invested in another MMO.

I personally won't be buying the expansion.

    Yes. "Save WoW."
As in the game has been in decline the last few years. Declines that have persisted despite the last two expansions.

To Save WoW would be to halt the decline and possibly result in long term gains.

Why do they need to change the formula when they still have several million subscribers, and are making billions of dollars off of the game? Not to mention, they've experienced an increased subscriber base since the announcement of Warlords of Draenor. Honestly, anyone who thinks WoW is dying anytime soon is deluding themselves.

Currently playing: FFXIV (Elucifer Arclight, Leviathan server), LoL (Trash Tier Waifu, NA server), SMITE (Zacewing)

"They've experienced an increased subscriber base since the announcement of Warlords of Draenor."
It's unique phenomenon that that has occurred every time Blizzard has announced an expansion for WoW. The last two expansions have shown this to be a short term increase.

Sure, It will take WoW a while to die, but there is a continuing decline that if left unimpeded will lead to the game not being profitable enough for Acti-Blizz to maintain.

That will never happen. The only way WoW will close is if blizzard announces WoW 2 or another sequel. The only game playerbase that currently rivals it is League of Legends. They are also funding a big budget movie which probably cost them millions of dollars so I'm sure they aren't worried about money right now.

And lets not forget the last option for every p2p mmo is going f2p. F2P WoW would probably give the game another 10 years of life, easily.

which probably wont be until their next mmorpg, hell even then i can see WoW still be successful.
its like asking if adding a new flavor to bacon will save it, while bacon will always taste good, no matter what. ofcourse if u eat it too much it will get boring, but after a while it will be delicious again.
    hmmm bacon!
now if u excuse me i have some bacon to consume!

im sorry but you can't compare bacon to world of warcraft because bacon can be used in a variety of ways but wow will always be played the same way.
they can add all the fluff they want (lol city building) but the core is still the same and honestly i don't understand how people can still enjoy it after all this time.

Not really "save" WoW but, get more subscribers maybe lol. WoW is still the most populated MMO as far as I know, and pretty models can surely bring back people. IMO, ones character look is what people likes in MMOs. Cool armors, cool animations etc etc. Subconsciously, maybe.

If you really think the models are the only thing people care about in the new expansion you really need to brush up on what the community likes. Sure there's a good portion that are glad the models are getting an upgrade and all, but a good chunk is mainly interested in either the new features the expansion brings, the fixes such as the stat squish, or the lore and being able to meet important characters, albeit an alternate dimension version but still them nonetheless, from Draenor, one of the more mysterious parts of the lore.

If they really wanted to modernize it, they should rewrite the engine and make it into an action-oriented MMORPG!

    @Jermatoo and BooNeZ

Exactly. The models are a nice addition but they don't change the way the game is played. The entire system feels dated. Sure players will have access to new areas, new features, but the experience ultimately feels the same(old.)

That's why numbers jump around the time of expansions then fall lower than they were before. New players join and old players return. They experience the new content and leave alongside existing members.

Blizzard could make an effort to modernize and revitalize WoW or they can continue as is.

As is WoW will continue to bleed members until it is reduced to the point that it is...

    A) An obscure F2P game. (See: Everquest 1)
    B) Closed.

Well I doubt Blizzard has any true expectations to reach their old numbers, it was a sweet spot in time for MMOs and WoW was very well advertised and had the Warcraft following.

They still hold the highest numbers so I doubt they're sweating too hard. Try to maintain numbers, do what you can to improve on them when possible, and keep working on other projects for when the numbers truly start to dwindle.

Tl;DR I doubt Blizzard is delusional and ever expects to hit their old TBC like numbers

Doesn't really need saving yet... that being said this is probably going to be the first expansion i don't buy.

Game is still the best MMO out there so no it doesn't need any kind of saving. I have a great way to really enjoy WoW, I play it for 6-7 months and then take a brake for 3-4 months and I repeat that process xD I always have fun in game, but as with any game you just get tired of it so the brake is necessary, but the feeling when I come back to it is always great

If the number drops to a point of super low, they probably gonna revamp the combat system. Like, total overhaul. And that will be enough for the next 10 yrs or so.

I really doubt a combat revamp without making another new game.

Same here. WoW is doing fine for how old it is. I highly doubt they will do anything drastic. Once the numbers aren't where they are making a profit they will probably just make it F2P and make B2P expansions.

Not sure why WoW needs to be saved. Hell, I'm not sure why people are demanding they change the combat to some action style gameplay when every action style game does substantially worse than WoW and tons of players return to WoW after getting bored. That's why GW2 pretty much fell off the planet after all the hype while people still talk about WoW.

Runescape playerbase dropped a lot with evolution of combat (system).
