    Default Japanese Cartoon Suggestions

I used to watch animes that were available on TV when I was a child, and I enjoyed a few of them. Sailor Moon and Gundam Wing are my favorites.

These days, I feel like modern anime is all very similar. They all consist of recycled formulas, and the characters all look like trying-too-hard-to-look-cute 10-year-olds.

The art detail and technique has decreased, the songs are all generic, and everyone looks and acts like they're 10. Can anyone suggest animes that are more diverse, mature, and less dumb pls?

I like romance, magical girls, badassery, but not really a fan of super gory violence unless the storyline and art are really really good.

I liked Cardcaptors when I was younger, but I think they're all ten year olds.

Sword Art Online, Full Metal Panic!, Cowboy Bepop, No Life No Game, Ah! My Goddess. There's more out there but seems if you're only finding "trying-too-hard-to-look-cute 10-year-olds" than you are looking at those targeted for that age range group. Although there are some good ones but I can't remember them off the top of my head. You can always search for genre on http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ or on http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=main .

Edit: Ah Berserk is good but that is gory but very good story.

We have a sub-forum specifically for anime discussion, the Anime Nation.

    Buuuut.

    Eden of the East
    Attack on Titan
.Hack series (the first one, the others kinda follow the retarded chibii formula)
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (one of my all-time favorites)
    Summer Wars (Awesome feature film)
Any Ghibli film, especially Princess Mononoke.
Heroic Age (actually, I think I might re-watch this soon now that I think about it)
Break Blade (Magic, Giant robots, romance, kingdoms at war, basically everything a good anime needs)

Off the top of my head.

Eh, No Life No Game isn't all that mature and it's a comedy, so there's a lot of chibi, harem, ecchi crap. Ah! My Goddess is also a harem/comedy, so not very serious (tho it's kinda like Tenchi Muyo in that it's a comedy/harem but still has a decent semi-serious backstory that keeps it interesting and going).

Well No Life No Game isn't mature, that can be ignore but so far the anime is quite interesting so despite the genre it's a good animation. It defies the "trying-too-hard-to-look-cute 10-year-olds".

Ah! My Goddess is actually romance and does not have harem. The other characters followed for story development. The main character from beginning to end has only liked and confess to belldandy. Though it still have a comedy side to it.

Edit: Beck is a hella good animation. Despite it being repetitive at times. The manga ended weird it was a good point for the animation to stop where they stopped.

I've seen Cardcaptor Sakura and I own the manga. The anime is good and still good today. The manga is better.

I saw the first ep of SAO a long time ago and it has art that is exactly what I don't like and the story is lackluster and annoying to me. Didn't watch anymore after that.

I've seen Cowboy Bebop and I saw some of Ah! My Goddess.

I've known about Berserk for years but never watched it. I watched the first two eps last night. Seems boring so far, but the art is great. I'll continue it and see where it takes me.

I've heard of Full Metal Panic! but I've never watched it. It may be a future consideration.

No Life No Game looks incredibly dumb. Probably won't be a consideration.

    Oopsies!

Eden of the East - Maybe.
Attack on Titan - First ep is funny, but I liked it. I think my friend wanted me to watch it with him.
.Hack - The odd episodes I saw on TV seemed boring. I dunno if I'll delve into that.
    BECK - No.
Summer Wars - Has a bit of the art style I don't like. Maybe.
Ghibli - I think I've seen just about every Ghibli film, or at least the ones that are the most popular. Princess Mononoke is my favorite.
Heroic Age - Looks interesting; maybe.
Break Blade - Started this one last night. It's okay so far. I will continue to watch.

I liked/like Tenchi series except for Tokyo. That shit was whack.

You know I've seen Princess Mononoke...

Didn't we watch an ep or two of Stein's Gate together? No.

I was thinking of Fate/Stay Night. I always liked how it looked.

I don't know any new Gundam series.

as the authority on good animu here at onrpg, I have compiled you a list of animu that you should probably watch instead of sailor swoon.

akira, berserk, gantz, ghost in the shell, ergo proxy, lain, cowboy bebop, neo tokyo...

that's about it. enjoy not watching them.

    No one mentioned Naruto/One Piece/Bleach? :P
It is very dragonball'ish, goes on forever but it is kinda nice if you skip the fillers.
(Fillers are eps that fill in some backstories)

I loved the F out of Attack on Titan, can't wait for next season

Log Horizon is a nice anime about people being stuck in a game which is totally different from SAO and in my opinion much better.
You follow some veteran raiders throughout the series and they are cool and NPC's are involved in the story so thats cool.

    Kuroko's basketball.
I do not like basketball in any way, but this series is more like basketballers on some magical speed.
Good story, nice characters and really cool action scenes.

    Mushishi.
Slow, zen, easy and relaxing anime.
You follow some dude investigating unnatural phenomenon that are linked to Mushi.
Good to watch on hangover days.

    Fullmetal Alchemist,
cool series about alchemist magic (High rated on imdb)

Mushi Shi is phenomenal. I don't watch much if any anime and I'm in love with that show. If you enjoy the twilight zone or stuff like are you afraid of the dark (as in twists and very unique stories every episode) you'll really like this.

It's unlike anything else so it's difficult to describe.

Ghost in The Shell : Stand Alone Complex
    and
Ghost in The Shell : Arise

Actually, see them in the reverse order of what I just wrote.

Also, Ergo Proxy, Noein, Samurai Champloo, Gankutsuou(Count of Mounte Cristo) are master pieces that I can name of the top of my head.

    Steins;Gate ( - Epic - )

Shinsekai Yori (If you want to discover a pretty interesting post apocalyptic world) (Chars start as childs to introduce you to the world but they age as the episodes pass)

Mushi shi (If you want something relaxing and interesting to watch and dont mind episodic stuff)

House of five leaves (Relax anime about a lame samurai trying to find a job to do, pretty interesting if you like the setting)

Psycho-Pass (Darker anime. Police themed in a city where people are assigned life carreers and constantly analysed by the Sybil system, an advanced computer system that pretty much dictates the people's life. People are usually arrested before they even commit a crime due to their psycho-pass showing their criminal intents. Storyline is worth it tho. I'd suggest against watching though if you get very uncomfortable when there's violence, it gets a bit creepy at times.)

Log horizon / SAO ( If you want something MMO-Themed and don't wanna be stuck playing through the.//hack games) (Sao has horrible romance tho) (and as far as I'm concerned, both are lots worse than dot hack)

You could also check out Durarara, dunno how to describe it tho.

Solid soundtrack too. I like Eden of the East better as a romance anime though Kemonozume is up there.
