I don't see why all USB hard drives won't work with the Wii U. The only thing is that if it is USB powered, as in there is no power plug going to an outlet, then the Wii U USB slot does not produce enough power. In that case you will have to buy these USB Y cables, which are basically just two USB plugs feeding into one. This way you can use two USB ports and get enough power for the HD.
