Default Do you think there is still a negative stigma regarding guys playing female character

    Or is it gone?

I mostly play female characters in anime-style MMORPG, since I feel like Anime-style is better suited for females than males.

However, in terms of Western MMORPGs I usually play male characters.

Yeah there is. But I wouldn't call it a ''stigma''. Some people think its weird, some don't. Who cares what they think. Do what you want.

It still is, but only because people still associate their real identities with their ingame ones. I personally play an equal amount of both so I'm used to it.

The real question is, "Do you care?". The only thing I care about is if the person playing, knows how to play. That's all I've ever cared about.

Usually I play a male character, but when I play an MMO and I figure I wont play it long I will sometimes make a female character. However, this sometimes comes back to bite me (in Dragon's Prophet and Wurm Online, for example) and I end playing the game a lot and my main character is a female.

I find that, unless I encourage it, most people figure I'm a guy to begin with and treat me as such. There's definitely a few people here and there that treat me a bit odd until I tell them I'm a guy or they hear me in VOIP. I've seen some people go from White Knights to white supremacy racists in a matter of moments. But most people just don't give a shit. I've never had anyone that I actually play with (IE friends and guildies) complain about me playing female characters, and I've never complained about a guy playing a female character either.

I do give people a choice, though. Some people just want to be the other gender so they'll play the other gender. If these people tell me that they're the gender that they're playing, I will treat them as such, even if I know they're really a guy. Most of the time, this just means I'll call them a her/she instead of a he/him, or vice versa.

Generally, unless it's just someone trolling, a majority of gamers don't give a flying **** what you are, what you're playing, what you like, etc... as long as you're not being an ass hole.

It's only an issue because the people judging you are having issues separating the importance of real world identity with the laid back nature of online gaming. Turn it around on em as they likely have the far more serious issues to deal with.

I'd say there is no stigma and no one cares. MMOs have been wildly popular for over 10 years and this kind of thing is common. The only people who give you crap for it are people who don't play MMOs or games in general.

If people really care about it, Tomb Raider wouldn't be as popular as it is today.

There still is, of course. But I'd venture to say that no one who matters cares.

I usually choose dudes. Unless they have no male char like back in FFXIV 1.0 days. But I think there's nothing wrong with it. It's just a game. ya'know.

Remember GunZ online where everyone played females because their animations were a lot smoother?

couple stories about me playing female characters:

Everquest: when i used to play i played with an RP group, female high elf mage. the group knew i was a guy(as i told them when they asked) and some guy came up to me with basically "leave these nerds and come hop in my car." but ruder and about the game. usual tough guy stuff.
the group was laughing and encouraged me, i was too busy laughing as the guy described what he would do to me(or more hopefully my character). i finally speak up and tell him that i am in fact male. he pulls out the "eww ur gay fayget." and i lost it right there.

Aion: Playing a female scout, just minding my own business and 4 people show up and start talking to me, being a nice guy i chat with em and they give me free shit, never asked for it. i told em not to bother with the free stuff, i prefer to earn my own. finally someone asked me, are you male or female. i told em i was male, to the response of "you coulda fooled me, you type very femininely" i wasn't sure how i should take that.

Moral of the story: i don't think it's a big deal. as the character is not you, but just that, a character to be played.

I've played females before, and I never usually reveal my true gender unless someone asks me. Sometimes, they never ask me. I'm good at playing female roles, and I can name female characters pretty easily. In FFXIV 2.0, I originally had planned to do this, but then I decided to use my real name in-game, as well as my real life hair color, eye color, and real life height.

After all, the best way to be "Private" about something, is to be public about it. When people have had enough of asking about yourself, they tend to take it at face value, and therefore, have no need to ask for it any longer, nor bring it up. However, this is less effective when dealing with younger people.

Pro-tip, if you ever want free items in an MMO, make a female character and use a lot of smilies when talking, especially ^_^. Also, don't let it be known you're really a guy and make up some lame excuses as to why you wont talk on VOIP. A majority of men, even those that are supposedly in relationships, will treat you a thousand times better, give you shit, forgive your mistakes, give you preferred group access, etc...

I always play female characters in every games I play. I find their animations prettier and their armor sets on average is 100x nicer looking. However, if almost all the armor sets look like a bikini, that's just a big no no because that's just stupid and ridiculous. Male armor sets are usually too bulky for my taste.

Had a guy flirt with me once in Perfect World Malaysia. He incessantly asked a bunch of questions to see if I was really a female. I said I was a female to troll him. Eventually he asked if I was from Taiwan and if I wanted to meet up. Haha!

i dont know why people think it's weird

all my characters are 99% female because i usually like all the armor for them - their hair is a lot better and hey it's sweet to play as a badass sexy character

the people that think it's weird are all close-minded and probably have a complex of some sorts as it is 100% personal choice

I feel that my avatar in game represents me, and In no way can I relate to being a female therefore I don't make female toons.
Coincidentally, it applies to movies as well. I find that I rarely watch ones with a female who is the main protagonist.

    Not sure really.

I generally don't have anything against it, but, frankly, when I think about it, I do not think of such people in pleasant forms.

Usually they're either dumb kids or... Strange people.
