Default Why are views on sex between Europe and U.S. so different

Why are views on sex so different in most of Europe than the U.S. From what I've heard, Europe is more relaxed and open to their sexuality. There are a lot more nude beaches, nude ads, lower age of consent for sex (as low as 13-14), better sex education, and I believe most parents are okay with their children having sex. Here in the U.S., we have a major obsession with sex yet almost everything sex related is taboo. Big obsession with boobs. Poorer sex education and a lot of parents seems to be against sex education. Pre-marital sex is a no-no to some parents here. I once witnessed an incident at the beach where a mom was breastfeeding her baby with a towel covered-up and security told her to cut it out due to public indecency which I think is ridiculous. There must be more differences that I'm missing...

The root of the U.S. stems from Europe yet why are the views on sex so vastly different?

Because you are comparing a continent to a country.

That's because a large portion of Europe is liberal regarding sex and I have no clue about views on sex in other North American countries as I do about the United States.

Well, NA is the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Each has their own states, provinces, and regions. Each a little different.

We're a country that is pretty much built on religion. A decent portion of the first colonist that later became the US were religious purist who wanted to get away from what they thought were decaying morals in Europe. That means a lot of our traditions are hard-boiled in religion, even those we don't immediately associate with religion.

My personal beliefs about sex - which will stay personal - run kinda close to traditional, but more because of logic (STDs, children with broken families - which I am a product of, etc...) than anything religious. I could careless what other people do or believe, as long as they're not bothering me with it. And yes, trying to change my mind about my beliefs is bothering me.

A lot of parents are against sex education because they feel it should be the parents job to pass-down the ins-and-outs of making babies and STDs. The problem is, not all parents are qualified, or have the nerve, to sit their child down and relate this information. So, what you have is a bunch of kids who go without because a vocal few wish to keep the tradition alive and leave the responsibility to the child's parents. Personally, I feel this is the way it should be in a perfect world. However, we don't live in a perfect world so sex education in public mandatory education should at least be part of the mandatory curriculum. What you get now is parents who will take their kids out of Sex Ed when it's an option (and it is an option in most schools... I had Sex Ed classes in 5th grade and then again in 8th grade), simply because they feel that it's indecent to discuss those things in public because they think their church would frown on it. And then never get around to educating their kid.

Then there's the kids that just don't care because they think no one else cares. Mostly from broken homes - and broken can just mean a home where the parents aren't paying enough attention and quality time with their kids, not just divorced or other such things. These kids will have sex whenever they can because they want to rebel, feel like an adult, have seen porn and it looks fun, etc... and not think about the consequences (babies, usually), even tho they know in the back of their head what is going to end up happening.

A lot of kids nowadays turn to birth control. Most girls I know end up having sex at 14-15 and their parents find out, and then their parents put them on birth control in some form, or they beg their parents and their parents cave in. Dunno if this is just the areas I've lived in, or if this is becoming the norm across the US.

It's 5am and I've kinda forgotten where I'm going with all this, so I'm gonna end the post here.

the catholic church, even for people who still go to church, kind of begins when you enter the building, and ends when you leave, if you know what i mean. it's waay less involved in the community. like i see most of these groups that are trying to provide surrogate father role models for young black men are affiliated with the baptist church, for instance. the catholic church doesn't play nearly so active a role in most communities. it might be different in filippino communities because they're a bit more hardcore about their faith, but i'm speaking from my own experience.

even in italy, only the really old people seemed too fussed about going to church regularly. they still consider themselves catholic, but it's of secondary importance to them.

i don't know why that's how it is, but yeah.

not that i'm saying these faith-based organizations in america are all bad. i'm sure they do some good stuff as well. but they do tend to have very traditional views, and a lot of power in their communities.

it's not that people are having less underage sex in these communities, anyway. it's that they're more ashamed and ignorant about it, and don't like to talk about it.

It stems from the British Empire. Not as cool as the Roman Empire, right? Damn right.

    Edit:
I find it funny that it seems in school you guys in the US learn that people left Europe because they disagreed with religion. We learn in school it was, because they where criminals, poor folks, unskilled, opportunists or exiles.

how i understand it was the initial colonies were mostly established by religious extremists called puritans who left because of religion, and then the british capitalised on it by giving criminals the choice between punishment at home or exile and indentured servitude in the colonies.
