Default is it weird to lock your door?

I'm just curious. My family all tends to lock their doors. Home alone, night time, out front swimming, corner store trip...always have it locked.

I do it as a habit and sometimes even lock myself out on accident because I locked the door when subconsciously I went out to be the garbage can without my key lmao.

I knew a pretty ballsy kid when I was younger that used to pretty much ask to end up on the wrong side of an home intrusion case. He would on a dare turn people knobs at night, it was an advanced form of ding dong ditch.

Coincidentally, he didn't stay free very long.

I lock my door cause I have an apartment and sometimes you get people who accidentally try to open the wrong doors cause of how the wings are set up.

Not only that but it makes your renter insurance useless.

I do. It's odd not to lock your door, honestly. In small towns, it's not so much an issue, but if you live in a town with more than 30,000 people, there's going to be a decent crime rate.

I dunno. I have friends stop by and ask what the hell the door is locked for when I'm home. Made me wonder if I'm just weird or if they are lol.

i guess it just depends where you live. i don't live in a super dangerous part of town, but there are a lot of tweakers and homeless folks wandering around nearby. i'm not paranoid, i don't think, but i'm not just gonna leave my stuff open lol

Come to think of it, the friend who was questioning it literally has an insane arsonist with a warrant out who also has a grudge against his whole family missing from the police and breaking I to his garage. I'm gonna text him to lock his door.

I pretty much lock everything, except the back/front door. The only way to sneak up on me is climb over the shed and by that time my highly trained assassin will have barked and I could just let the smoke alarm go off, so the firefighters/police will come over without me needing to call

    Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

If you live in a suburb with ridiculously low crime-rates, it's day-time, and you're at home with several people, and still feel the need to have your doors locked for safety, I'd probably call you paranoid.
Reversely, if you live in the inner-city, in an apartment, and don't lock your door, regardless of time and who's with you, I'd call you a risk-taker.

There's a time and place for everything.

Why wouldn't you lock your doors? If people want to visit, that's what knocking/doorbells are for :P

Are you an idiot? How will a smoke alarm go off when there is no smoke?

They can still do that, even if the door is unlocked though =P
If a door is closed, the polite thing to do is to knock or ring the doorbell, regardless of whether the door is locked or not.

Personally I think that living somewhere you need to lock your doors would be a miserable existence.
I do live at the opposite spectrum though, I don't even know if we have keys for our doors, and I know we don't have keys for all of them.
However, if you want to fly the 150 miles in a small aircraft capable of landing where I live and are confidant that the 130lb St Bernard that stands nearly 6ft tall when barking on his hind legs will lick you instead of biting your head off, if you are convinced that a village of people who survive from hunting and fishing would let a stranger poke around, then you are welcome the years supply of canned food in my basement.

Haha well most of my friends act like they live there still. The bulk of them did at one point or another and are just as much friends with my family as they are with me.

I go by the rule of if I don't have to tell Elly you're cool, you don't have to knock haha.

Our family always locks the front/back/basement/garage doors, even if we're home. Sometimes we leave the backdoor unlocked, but that's only if we're using the backyard. I don't know anyone in my neighbourhood who leaves their door unlocked. o-o

When I'm at my uni dorm, I always leave the door unlocked while I'm in. I'll only lock it when I'm in the shower or sleeping.

Don't forget to quote your own reply under it. I'll leave this image in here for the heck of it.

only when everyone's gone for work and when everyone's asleep. Even then nothing happens, my neighborhood is pretty safe.
lots of people forget to close the garage when they leave for work but nothing ever gets stolen.

My neighborhood is pretty quiet so we don't really ever lock the doors until it gets dark; even then nothing would happen since we have neighborhood watches, and they only get together to drink or chill out.
