there's a cool megapost about this on another forum. i'll try to copypaste the relevant bits.

no idea how well this stuff will work or if these links even still work:

    Adding Shaders and Mods

Option 1 - The Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul (MGSO)
The MSGO is a collection of hundreds of different graphics mods compiled by Kingpix and updates nearly everything having to do with graphics: models, textures, shaders, the UI, and more. It includes most of the well-known mods, such as Better Bodies, Better Clothes, Vurt's Trees, Animated Morrowind, and many more you never knew you wanted. A convenient control panel allows you to control which mods you want visible and which ones you don't, so if you don't like a particular mod or the game runs slowly, MGSO allows you to fix it. As of version 2.0, Kingpix added an automatic installer, so you can now just sit back and watch as hundreds of meshes and .esp files install themselves.

    Download Mirrors: http://www.ornitocopter.net/v3-0-release/
    Options panel fix: http://ornitocopter.net/Release/MGSOOptions_fixed.rar
    Unofficial Patch (v5): http://download.fliggerty.com/download--726

    Option 3 - Manual Installation
Many have reported problems with the Sound and Graphics Overhaul. If you don't want to go through the hassle, you can manually install everything as well. This method hasn't been tested with the latest versions of the mods, so follow this at your own peril. Here are the essential things you will need:

    Option 4 - Don't Do Anything
While the above patches and mods are highly recommended to bring Morrowind up to date, they are also optional. You can run Morrowind without them, however you might experience crashes or bugs from time to time that the above programs fix.

    Additional Mods and Extras

    Oggumogoggum's Morrowind Mods Compilation
If you don't want to deal with a lengthy install process and just want something relatively simple, Oggumogoggum compiled a megapack of over 80 different mods, including the official plugins and patches.

Oggumogoggum also provided a few screenshots of the end result:

    Download link: http://www.staglanparty.com/mw/oggumsmods2.exe

In addition, there is also a new modpack in the works. You can download the beta version at Ogg's website.

    BTB's Morrowind Mod List
BTB created a website with a list of suggested mods and graphics replacers with full descriptions, instructions, links, and screenshots of each one. Many of these are installed with the Sound and Graphics Overhaul and were a part of Etherwind's thread's OP.

You can see the list here: http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html

    Knotstheinane's Mod List
This blog also has a complete guide to getting Morrowind running, as well as numerous links to different mods.

    Goon-Made Mods:
Uvirith's Legacy - by Stuporstar and others: A must-have mod for House Telvanni which greatly improves the Stronghold to include more rooms, NPC's, a new travel system, quests, and more.
The Tea Mod - by Stuporstar: Why worry about all that prophecy stuff when you can sit down with a nice cuppa? This mod adds over 30 teas and 6 coffees to the game, plus tons of tea-related content.
Get Fezzed - by Stuporstar: Spread the joys of fez wearing to all inhabitants of Morrowind! Includes Shrinkwand, a wand which makes things smaller, teensy, wee, or even "frappe."
Books of Vvardenfell - by Stuporstar: Adds 50 lore-friendly guides and other books to the game written mostly by actual NPCs.
Propylons - by Stuporstar and others: Modifies the Master Index official plugin so you can teleport to Caldera from anywhere
Better Heads (Pluginless) - by The Furious Pirate: A version of Better Heads which doesn't require a plugin to work. You just unpack the files to your Morrowind directory and you're good to go.
Vvardenfell Visages- by The Furious Pirate and others: A face and hair replacement mod which updates the original models and textures while staying true to the originals.
Hall of Heroes (Expanded) - by Naky: An old (first) house mod. Naky welcomes any improvements to it.
Spell Renamer - by Inverness: Adds the school and relative cost of each spell to the beginning of its name, allowing for easier sorting. Add the .py file to the Mopy folder to install, then double-click it to run.
Museum House - by Musical_Daredevil: A small house in Balmora meant for showing off all your loot. It features changeable display racks and pedestals for different sizes of items.
Chocolate UI - by Oggumogoggum: Several UI tweaks in order to modernize it while still maintaining the vanilla experience.

    Recommended Mods:
Note: DO NOT use Morrowind enhanced. It's incredibly buggy and can cause in-game crashes.

    Additional Content:
Tamriel Rebuilt: A highly recommended mod consisting of an attempt to recreate the mainland province of Morrowind according to Elder Scrolls lore. Currently contains two completed maps, with much more content to come.
Tamriel Rebuilt Groundcover: Adds grass to the Tamriel Rebuilt landmass (if enabled).
Morrowind Comes Alive: A somewhat [in]famous megapack which places over a thousand unique NPCs around the world.
Morrowind Rebirth: Another megapack which adds more NPCs, towns, armor, and other things with the goal of making Morrowind seem less empty.
Starfire's NPC Additions: Randomly generates NPCs in settlements and the wilderness in order to add more people to the game.
Passive Healthy Wildlife: Makes non-diseased creatures more passive so they won't attack unless provoked.
The Farmer Mod Start your own farming business by purchasing fields and farmhands to grow your small plot of land into a large plantation.
Morrowind Abodes: A collection of six house mods, each mod placing a house in a different city (including Ald-Ruhn, Balmora, and Vivec).

    Graphic Enhancements:
AllConnaryTextures - One of the most well-known and recommended texture replacement packs.
Better Dialogue Font - A higher-res version of Morrowind's font.
AOF's Waterfalls and AOF's Potions: Changes the textures for waterfalls and potions to much better ones.
Taddeus' "On the Rocks!" series: Replaces the meshes and textures of every rock and boulder in the game. Important: It also replaces a couple characters in the name of Ald Redaynia, causing several errors. You'll need to go into the construction set and change the name back to avoid crashes.
Better Bodies, Better Bodies (for beasts), Better Heads, Better Clothes and More Better Clothes - "Better" models for heads, bodies, and clothing to match.
Darknut's weapon textures and armor textures
Darknut's creature textures for Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon
Distant Lights: Modifies MGEXE so it renders lights in the distance (Note: Requires MGEXE, obviously)
SWGs Skies (Note: Don't forget the night sky fix)
Vurt's Hi-res skies (Note: this is an addon for SWG's skies, not a standalone mod)
    Better Books
    Moon and Star Crosshair

    Quests:
Great House Dagoth: Adds the Sixth House as a playable house with both quests and ranks.
Rise of House Telvanni: Help House Telvanni rise to political dominance and forever alter Morrowind's political landscape.
Twin Lamps: Ever wanted to do more with the abolition movement than just free a few Khajiits? This mod adds 15-20 new quests with branching paths and the possibility of ending slavery on Vvardenfel.

    Gameplay Enhancements:
BTB's Game Improvements: A combination of several mods which change and rebalance many different game systems including birthsigns, races, alchemy, and spell effects. It makes the game much harder to break and provides a bit more of a challenge than vanilla Morrowind.
SUPER Adventurers 3: Rebalances leveling mechanics (i.e. skill gains and monsters) and adds a while bunch of additional content, including NPCs, weapons, armor, and clothing.
Run Faster: Does exactly what it says on the tin. Choose the file with the speed you want and enjoy the fact that it no longer takes you hours to go from one end of town to the other. It also modifies NPCs' speeds, which some people don't like.
Galsiah's Character Development: Changes the leveling system so your attributes go up as your skills do, rather than choosing at level-up.
MADD Leveler: Does mostly the same thing as GCD with a few differences that some people prefer.
Linora's Leveling Mod: If you're like me and don't feel like messing around much with leveling, this mod is for you. All it does is give you x5 multipliers on level-up for any major or minor skill you raised by at least one point.
Multiple Teleport Marking Mod: Allows you to mark up to 12 different places and recall to any one of them via a pop-up menu.
Melian's Teleport Mod: Allows for an unlimited number of mark locations.
Fair Magicka Regen and Natural Healing: Regenerates magicka and health, based on several variables.
Speed and Stamina: Changes how stamina works and when it's drained, plus raises some movement-based things a bit.
Book Rotate: Rotates a book at a different angle each time it's dropped, allowing you to finally place them on bookshelves properly.

You can also download many of the mods on the above list as one .zip file (compiled by Hadlock).

    Mod managers:
Wrye Mash: The most widely used manager. It does practically everything, from sorting load orders to checking dependencies to even allowing you to change file dates.
MLOX and TES3Cmd: Highly recommended, MLOX allows you to sort your load order and check for conflicts between mods. TES3Cmd allows you to fix problems you find and clean mods via command line.
TESTool: A conflict checker which comes with a handy "just fix it" button if you want a less complicated (but less thorough) fix.
TESPCD: A more manual version of TESTool.
Nexus Mod Manager: Released by the Nexus sites, it allows you to sort, reorder, and check for updates to mods for Morrowind and any other Nexus games (including Skyrim and Fallout).

Note: Make sure to install Mash in your Morrowind Directory, or else it won't find anything even with the correct file paths.

An important note about save files
In the past, some players experienced problems with corrupted saves when using Quicksave or saving outdoors with older versions of MGE. While this has been shown to not be a problem for some time, you should at least be aware that it can possibly happen.

    Morrowind is a nice RPGer.

But I've also looked at Dungeon Lords and somehow I feel that game could be more awesome. Some mods for DL give you the usuall access to high powers and all spells but the world of DL is somehow even more scary than Morrowind. I've been running about in the open world of DL, and there would be a dragon flying overhead. All you would hear is the swooshing sound. And you look up and high above is a dragon and it would swwop on you to find out who you are. Then it would try to eat you after a while >< (while u were running around exploring). Personally, im putting DL ahead of Morrowind for exploration potential.

Be warned - I am a major player of Regnum Online the mmo. I've been playing it for about 2 years and rarely go without logging in at least once a day. You can also look at good alternatives to Regnum such ase Aion online and Aika Online.

its free now. out on collectors edition torrent. all the patches solved all the problems.

be warned. it is an unforgiving game full of strange mystery. game is full of creepy places.

best thing to do, is use the editor, amp up your stats and get some decent spells, then go kick ass while the game throws buttloads of monsters at you. and its all action combat too!

check youtube also, there's guys who love taping their explorations, but none of them have reached as deep as i have. there are dark lonely forests on lost coastlines, high towering islands in the middle of lonely seas (and yea you swim the whole length). i have the whole game stashed on DVD one day ill go explore more. i think there is now even a multiplayer mod.
