    Default Elite: Dangerous

Since it features "massive" numbers of online players, I think it fits here.

Anyone played this? I've been thinking of getting it. However, it would cost $75 to get into the beta (not sure if worth), or $50 just to pre-order for when it releases (estimated to be Q4 2014).

Seems like it would be an awesome game to hold me over while I wait for Star Citizen and other games.

    Is it worth it?
    Well lets see,
what games have you bought that haven't done much, me..loads of crap, I never ever thought I would of fallen for all this, but I have done so.
I fell for & into the Steam Trap, greenlight bullshit & all the other crappy names they give to rip off Alpha & beta testers these days...I hate it. The games on Steam I'm forced into because some of them I love, Gaming is a passion, I try not too, but at times I got to use Steam as they hold the monopoly on most games, so I have use it to play some games.
There have been some real nasties too, games I bought that are in total crap in such a state they are no fun at all. If they are "fun", this lasts five or so minutes. what a friggin loss that was!!

I also became a mug for so called kickstarter, I loath this system too so instead of buying from kickstarter i sort outside markets or petitioned till they did have an outside of kickstarter venue, I was buying some PAY TO TEST lets become a founder games! Yet another thing I said I never do. But I choose what i thought was carefully planned. One of these was Elite Dangerous, I also bought into two more, Star citizen & Shroud of the Avatar.
I stopped this habit dead after realising what the hell am I doing? I've fallen for something I've preached not to do. How wrong is it, how uncalculated is it! I fell hook line & sinker! I had to stop this. I was paying to Test a game! I spent years testing games as I believed testing back then was helping developers seek errors in the game, not like the today's dumb-ass's constantly paying them so they can work them to test!?!.WTF is this!! People pay to test today! its unstoppable it seems. I thought humans had a brain. all this is so dumb, I fell for it too! so I am just as dumb & gullible, For me, what's done! is done! & I don't mind admitting it.

Well, Star Citizen isn't the game I thought it would be, its seems like a glorified fan feast wanting more money to do stage theatre & acting classes, alongside glorifying itself with lavish offices creating props & models that really don't have any relevance to SPACE or the way a space game should be. The Star Citizen game in its current state is total utter crap of confusion, and has menus which are basically identical to the maps like Eves program, which is another glorification of within itself. SC is just a small pea but with big bucks trying to make you believe its the only thing! SC is the master of deception & glorification. I fell into that one.

Shroud of Avatar seems like its made in the backyard, it poorly coded, imaginative in a few ways only. Its unpolished & not followed through with skill, its slow developing, its a backyard game made with low rank amateur programmers on an blown game engine with a master at the helm.
It is a pity that Richard Garriott choose yet another path to fall down on, Its like Richard Garriott didn't even want a great game from the start! his choice of the easy root, easy engine, & his team are in laAAah did daaHH land. Shameful really.
Richard Garriott needed to see ArcheAge, in his way. He would of known that Archeage rocks & is "the" new mmo fantasy winner today! set in & upon his old field & passions. Just what Richard Garriott's got in Shroud of Avatar is a half lemon with a little orange n spice. There's no real go! to get you going, the master, unfortunately, is using inferior programmers with an inferior game engine. I fell into that one too.

Elite Dangerous on the other hand is master piece of engineering, its playable to the tee. You can hit that golf ball right down the fairway & end up in the hole in one hit! Its really is the best achievement in the Space games race that I've ever investing in, The games physics is SPACE, unlike Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous's creator has the passion of Space & its feel, he made Elite! but that's not a good enough reason is it? seeing that all the other "great names" are creating flops, mess pools & exploit measures to gain notoriety. Elite Dangerous on the other hand, head man & his team have made the game out of mere peanuts! A game you can be comfortable in, a game you can play & win, you win by having a game that plays & acts like we were out there in SPACE. Its amazing & it works in every aspect of its creation. All the ships are Space ships not revamped air force planes like in Star Citizen! Elite Dangerous is serious space game.

    So after my tell tale...rambling,
if your questioning whether Elite Dangerous is worth it, I got questions for you.
    Do you like Space games?
Have bought nothing but crap lately?
How many games have bought you just sit on?
Can you handle the pressures of learning under more pressure trying to understand game physics, ship control, docking and un docking?
Can you handle the consequences of pirates & out right killers who kill you just for sake of it?
Do you like trading? cargo hauling? set in realism as far as we can create today.
Do you like the now new added..mining of asteroids?
    Are you a fighter?
    Are you mathematician?
Do you like freedom of movement around a massive world which really doesn't get taken or explored to extremes yet?
If you believe you have the spare time & cash, go for it!
if not, then wait & bide your time by watching videos of the game & keep thinking should I of bought it or should I wait?
Elite Dangerous is a great game made with little funding, in game you know its made professionally & created on what you would think was a massive BIG Budget. it not, its made with passion & highly skilled programmers who want you to play it.
Its a SPACE game. its a winner for me. the rest is for you decide. One thing I do know is you can play this game without any remorse.

    Happy gaming

i personally like SOTA, then again i was never truly a fan of ultima(i blame not learning about it till high school)and i never played UO, as an outsider looking in, i dig what RG is doing.

yes development is slow but you can't snap your fingers and "bam" the game is done, it's technically not even in alpha.

At current stage, Elite Dangerous is looking a lot better than Star Citizen. It plays better. It feels better. And it seems more fun. By far.

Went ahead and bought the game. Did a few missions in Open Play last night. Currently at 30k.

    What should I be doing?

I mean more of what's the current progression of ships. Right now I'm in the default Sidewinder. What should my next ship be? I'm guessing I'll probably be doing trade for now, as I've made my current stock of 50k credits from doing 15k credit trade runs. I attempted a couple of combat missions, but they required killing of hostiles in a war zone, which mostly consisted of Cobras. And, while I could get their shields down, they were able to turn me into swiss-cheese if I didn't run away (which didn't work out so well after the third attempt). I'm wondering if that's just because of my weak default pulse lasers (should I get some other weapons?) or just because the Sidewinder is crap.

Is there something I can do to make my Sidewinder strong enough to take on the Cobras? I see a lot of combat missions for that hostile area and they pay out 20k each, and because most of them consist of "Kill enemies in hostile zone" it appears they can be stacked for some nice profit.

I'm wondering about getting into mining, but I think I would need a ship with a much bigger cargo hold for that. What's the next step when you're wanting to go from A Sidewinder into some trading/mining?

For now I want to get a couple of competent ships set up - one for trade (or maybe mining) and the other for combat. Once I have those, I'm thinking I'll get into exploration and visit some of the 2,400+ currently available systems.

Damnit, you're making me want to buy it too. The good old days of Wing Commander and Privateer is too nostalgic.

    Do et.

I've been reading a lot into the forums and I'm getting a lot of mixed signals. The community seems to be on the brink of toxicity, but not quite there. This is because there are the "nay sayers" who thrive on drama of any form - if they can stir it up by saying that the game wont be worth playing at release, they'll do it.

Then there's the massive "Solo player versus open play" rift in the community. A large portion of the community feels that Open play aspects should be shunted in favor of solo play - even (at least some) of the developers feel like this, going so far as saying that they're against "open" communication channels. I'm worried that the game will release with only player-to-player communication in-game, as there currently is. I'm sure there will be some sort of group channel supported (or at least I hope).

Then there's the Open play people who want the game to be more and more like an MMO, going so far as to say that solo play shouldn't even be an option.

The game is kind of confusing - they say that release will be by the end of the year, but it seems like a lot of the "important" features in the game are still missing. Right now play is kinda limited. You can see peeks and glimpses into some of the "big features" that are meant to be in the game but aren't quite there. But for the most part it's trade, transport, mine, or bounty hunt/assassinate. And while those four aspects do offer a wide range of play, without the "living galaxy" not being fully implemented it seems like a lot of players get bored with it after a few weeks of play. And it's hard to believe that there will be a "god patch" in the next month and a half that will fix all these worries.

The game IS really amazing, though. I'm thinking about buying either a TrackIR or the community-made EDTracker (Elite: Dangerous Tracker, community made, not-for-profit head tracking device that is supposedly more precise and better suited to the game than TrackIR is). I downloaded FaceTrackNoIR - a program that uses your webcam to face track to try and provide the same experience as Track IR. It works, to an extent, but is way to unreliable mostly due to the quality of my webcam. So I can either dish out the $200 or so for TrackIR or the $45-50 for the EDTracker (the community driven project offers to build and encase the whole thing for you, or sell you the individual parts, and it comes out to about 28 UK pounds or so).

But what I really want is the Rift to play the game with. I really want the consumer version to be made available. But from what I've seen in youtube videos, the experience of playing this game with the Rift is something that can't be described by words. But here' a neat video of someone doing it,

On another note, I'm thinking of getting a HOTAS (Hands on Throttle and Stick) setup. Right now, my joystick is an all-in-one type deal - it has the throttle and the joystick all in one stand. This makes it fairly awkward in some cases. If I had a proper HOTAS setup, I could have the throttle on the left of my keyboard and my joystick on the right. As it stands now, I kinda have to push my keyboard off to the side at an awkward angle. I'm thinking of getting the Saitek pro setup.

And that reminds me that I also plan to get the Voice Attack program and the various ED-specific addons.

The Saitek + Rift + Voice Attack is basically the trifecta of VR. If I can manage to get that set-up together, I plan to take it a step further and get myself a proper VR "Chair" setup with perhaps a rumble seat attached to it and/or subwoofer.

    So my current "shopping list," in the order of which I plan to get it, consists of, ;

    1. Voice Attack + E: D specific addons
    2. Saitek HOTAS Pro set-up
    3. New graphics card
    4. Oculus Rift (consumer model)
    5. Proper VR flight simulator chair setup
    6. Premium sound system

I'll probably be buying these over the next six months, slowly preparing. It would be awesome for playing just about any game, but specifically Elite: Dangerous, War Thunder, and Star Citizen.

Fairly big update today. Introduced a hanful of much-wanted/needed features. Such as group voice comms (and the voice comms in this game are some of the most atmospehric I've ever experienced). Also they introduced more features for the faction system (I'm still trying to decide for sure whether or not I want to go with Empire, Federation, Neutral or Pirate...). Gamma should be coming out tomorrow, but I dunno if there will be a patch or not. Gamma is supposed to be representative of the "real game" as it will be at launch, and they've hinted that we'll only get fixes and tweaks during its run. So I'm guessing there will be no more major content/feature updates until post launch.

I've been holding off on playing, as there will be a wipe tomorrow and I didn't want to invest much time in it. I was happy with what I achieved in my little time in beta. Got myself a fairly nice Hauler and was able to do trade, transport, and mining. Towards the end I began mining the most as the money possibilities are more fun and it's a bit more involved. I hope they introduce some sort of asteroid scanner before long, though, as right now the only way to figure out what an asteroid is made up of is by taking a sample (which consist of mining it until a chunk comes off and then scanning it). I really like the way the mining works, though. You get a raw chunk that can be made up of multiple percentages of a resource. Then you scoop it and it goes into your refinery. Then you tell your refinery what to do with it - you could have it put a good resouce like Platinum into a bay for further refining and then eject a crappy resource that isn't worth much. The system is already more in-depth then a number of space gameS I've palyed so I'm looking forward to the future. I'm also lucky in that I have yet to be attacked while mining or heading to my local station for a turn-in.

I plan to start playing the game again tomorrow. Hopefully for at least two hours a day. I don't want to put so much time into it before official release as I'm not 100% sure whether or not there will be another wipe. Nothing like a wipe to give you a good case of "Burn-out." I would like to rush into mining first-thing this time around, though. Doing trade and transport is fun, but mining is something more suited to me it feels like. My six months spent running three accounts mining in Eve could have something to do with that.

Speaking of factions, I'm not as restricted as I'm guessing a lot of players will be. Because I've pre-ordered, I'm guaranteed a permit to enter the Sol system. Of course that's just one of the Federations permit-required systems, but most people want to get friendly with the Feds simply for the Sol pass (of those that haven't pre-ordered that is). I'm guessing a vast majority of pre-orders will end up siding with the Empire or going pirate because of that, but I could be wrong.

The permit system, which is new with the latest update, is fairly interesting in concept. Along with the mission improvements, the game should become more interesting as they try to become friendly with certain factions to gain access to protected permit-only systems. I'm wondering if some of the higher-end mining locations within the Galactic Core (of sorts) will become permit-protected by factions. In a dream world, and I'm guessing this is the dream for E by what the devs have talked about concerning Dynamic actions of the AI factions, is that a player will go through a unique system and will sell the scan/survey data he's collected of that data to a station and depending on if the station is controlled by the Feds or Imps, one will attempt to move in to that system to protect it for their factions miners. Perhaps a conflict of sorts would break out? I dunno.

No crafting. Not sure if it's planned for the future or not, either. It's one of the things I'd have liked.

The trading is a lot like in Uncharted Waters Online. The actions of players can affect the supply and demand. Depending on where a station is and what type of system it's in, it'll demand a certain items. And depending on the supply of that item, it'll have a certain item. For example, a station for an agriculture world wont give two shits about minerals for the most part, but they'd like harvesters or something from a tech world. However, the system works with or without the player - if no player is transporting goods, the NPCs (at least in the back-end) will end up doing it.

The game is designed to be a living, evolving, dynamic recreation of our galaxy in the year 3000-something. It's meant for players to interact with it and, at times, interact with each other. However, it's not designed to require the players interacting to work. Which is kind of disappointing if you're looking for an traditional sandbox MMO like Eve Online. But when you stop thinking about what you "want" and realize what it is, it's still quite awesome.

TL;DR - Trading is great. Is there a player driven economy? No. But there is a player affected economy.
