I'd seen it in the app store dozens of times but finally got around to playing it and it's pretty solid despite it being an energy based game (it's a decent recovery rate between PvE and PvP energy). There's a PvE storyline as well as real time PvP with other players. Both can grant the Units, exp and gold need to make your squad stronger.

You make a Squad of up to 15 units who are summoned onto the field during your turn phase to be placed on one of the 3 rows. The objective of game is to reduce the Captain's HP down to 0 by sending your units to the other side of the map to one of the 3 colored squares to attack. As long as the colored squares are open, the Captain is open to attack. Each unit only moves forward your turn but can be shifted into other rows during that phase. It allows for some interesting tactics to be used depending on the units you have available.

There's 6 types of units:
Fighter: Focuses on increasing damage through attacking or through various buffs.
Defender: Protects allies with high health and defensive abilities and blocking enemy advancement.
Scout: Infiltrates across the board quickly to dispatch or disable targets.
Gunner: Pierces enemies in a row and focuses on weakening specific targets.
Mage: Blasts clusters of enemies from a distance while providing various buffs/debuffs
Priest provides healing for units along with buffs/debuffs

Each unit, depending on its' overall strength, has a Mana value associated with it (typically weaker have lower and stronger have higher values). You gain 2 Mana per round, with a max of 10 total that can be in play at any given time. Units on the field count toward your maximum Mana value, but their worth is recovered upon defeat in battle. Each unit can only be summoned into battle once so be careful about how you send them out. You start out with 4 units 3 random and one Vanguard (a default that auto shows up at the start you can choose), and are given an additional unit each turn, up to 6 max. You many summon up to 3 units per turn or pass and just rack up Mana.

The overall presentation of the game is great, and it feels like a hybrid of The Grins Tale and Megaman Battle Network. While there is some luck to getting the right units set up at certain points, there's a lot of strategies to deal with even the stronger units you'll come across in PvE and PvP* provided you play smart.

*Scout (1ATKx2) + Bloodlust -Captain Skill (+2ATK) + Empower - Fighter Skill (2ATK) = GG. I did this to someone in PvP earlier and killed them in 3 turns.

Great game to kill some time or to play seriously.
