Wonderland Online Preview

Wonderland Online is an interesting title that feels like an old school console RPG that has fallen in love with a MMORPG and had a child with it. Coming from IGG, it should be safe to assume that this will be another addition to their free to play library of games. Since they have lots of experience with this genre of games now, I took a look in at it during their closed Alpha test.

Graphically, Wonderland Online seems to bill itself as a clean looking 2D isometric game. The maps are all done with great attention to detail, as there are little things that are a part of the scenery that are collectable and used in their crafting system. Characters actually change in appearance when you change their equipment, which really should be a requirement for any game now. Different weapons also have different attack animations which brings more variety to the table. It is done in what appears to be a 16-bit setup, but it just serves to add to the nostalgia factors of the title.

The sound of the title will definitely remind any players of the old 16-bit consoles (Super Nintendo [Famicom], Sega Genesis, or TurboGrafix 16). While music seemed appropriate to the areas where it played, even on the lowest settings it still was a bit loud for my tastes. Maybe I will go over that again when I have some speakers to work with instead of a headset, but as it stands it was something that I could have done without. Sound effects were done fairly well in comparison to other titles that are comparable to this. They will not be winning any awards, but they could have done much worse on their sound than what was done.
One area that Wonderland Online really shined in was the gameplay. The turn-based combat is a breath of fresh air with almost all MMOs today changing over to real-time combat. It is done with the player having 20 seconds to pick their move from a menu of choices. Once the player (or players when in a group) has chosen all their actions combat will begin. Turns are done by whoever has the higher agility it appeared. Stats are what drive this game and the character chosen will give you a jump start on the type of character you want. The crafting is where the game stands out above all others though. By creating various different tools or work areas (kilns, furnaces, looms, etc), one can produce items of just about anything you can imagine. There are the typical weapons and clothing that can be created, but beyond that the sky is the limit. Motor vehicles, hot air balloons, boats of all sorts and more are all able to be crafted with the right materials and work areas. A transmute system for alchemy exists that can combine items into other things as well, but I have not been able to find predictable results for that yet. Maybe they will put out some guides to the transmute system to clear it up soon. Either way, it is by far the most in-depth crafting system that I have seen in a game to date.

With the game being a closed Alpha, the community was very limited. From what I experienced the players were very helpful and willing to assist others in any way possible. Trade was brisk with players swapping materials they do not need for materials they do. Player shops had not proliferated at this point, but I expect that several cities will be flooded with player operated shops when they are AFK. One minor thing is that there is an item you get that allows you to set your character to run around and fight automatically which means that you will occasionally run into someone who is not replying. Do not feel that you are being slighted as they are likely just away from their system and training. This is bound to change when the game launches as inevitably the jerk and griefers find their way to new games, but I do not anticipate it becoming a major issue because of the necessity of trading.

Surprisingly the game was free from any slowdowns or performance issues. Not once did I lag in combat or on the world map. This was a welcome surprise as with the exception of Zu Online, I lagged in all of IGGs other titles. I was very happy with this and I spent a lot of time playing this game purely for that reason alone. Whatever different IGG did with this title over their others, they need to continue it.

Overall, I was quite pleased with Wonderland Online. The gameplay was different, the crafting was phenomenal, and the community was generally quite friendly. If I could get this running on a modified PSP or maybe even a Nintendo DS I would be absolutely ecstatic since I could play such a fantastic game anywhere. Definitely worth a try for anyone who is not turned away by the old school appearance.

Onrpg to cross-promote with new MMO Online Magazine

ONRPG to cross-promote with brand new online gaming magazine!

We are delighted to announce that ONRPG will be cross-promoting Thirteen1, a brand new free to read online-gaming e-magazine.

Each month will have a feature in the magazine which highlights the hot topics of discussion on our forums (so be sure to stay active J) as part of Thirteen1’s on-going commitment to the importance of community in MMO gaming.

Released on the 13th of every month at 1pm the magazine aims to bring coverage and shed light on all those things that really matter in the online gaming world.

Thirteen1 will endeavour to bring you informative and quirky articles about all of the relevant issues affecting games and gamers in the industry.
It even includes those hidden corners you probably don’t know about…but most definitely should.

It’s no lie that there’s a lack of MMO magazines out there, and those that do exist are forgetting that the core element of online gaming is about having fun!
Thirteen1 hasn’t forgotten, and that’s why its editors have put a ban on the boring details that litter the rest.
“You don’t want huge articles and neither do we, that’s why we get to the point and have fun while we are doing it!” Comments the thirteen1 editorial team.

From the seemingly irrelevant to the massively obvious, from comic strips to competitions, mass-debating and a funny little man named Dre, thirteen1 taps right back into the original pull of gaming.
The Editors have even given a guarantee: “If you don’t smile while reading this mag, we’ll personally promise to refund the full cover price.”
This is easy because it’s completely FREE to read!

The best thing about Thirteen1 is that it’s a completely independent publication, meaning there is nobody telling them what they should or should not write.
If they need to put somebody down they will, and they’ll pull less punches than a professional boxer.

Hypnotiser Guide

Hypnotiser Guide

Hypnotiser is kinda unpopular in the Elf Online (http://elf.happymmo.com). It might be because it doesnt do as much dmg as other jobs, but in fact this job very strong. I didn’t regret for choosing this job. It’s a very good addition to team pk you will find. Ill give you some info for being a Hpyno.

Lvling
Since hypnotizer isn’t an attacker, its kinda hard to train. So training in a party or small group is only option. From lvl 1 to 15, you can basically go train by yourself, its not that hard. After lvl 15, you might want to get a few other ppl who are same lvl as you and go dungeon for training. This way is pretty fast , you can basically make it to lvl 40. You often find yourself at a situation where nobody would train with you, ya, that’s one bad thing about hypnos. Without teammates, you cant do much. Lvling after lvl 40 all depends on how much time you put in, because its pretty long and painful. And make sure go to Training camp in Dragon City if you have team, good exp there as well. Suggest you do Treasure hunt event on Wednesdays and Fridays, if you do fast you gain lots of exp.

Stats
Skills you get after job advancement require TONS of mp, so I suggest you put more into wisdom. Rest can be put into stamina just for wearing imaginary items. So I recommend 3 wisdom and 2 stamina all the way till lvl 70.

Skills
This is pretty straight forward, skill potential you get is usually enough for each time you learn skills. They are all controlling enemy skills, so they are all useful. Its good to learn them all cuz you never know what you need when you face diff enemies.

Pet
Either Agil or Control is fine for hypno. If you don’t like not doing as good dmg as others then use Agil pet and max multiple attack and madness for training points. Control is just a 2nd hypno in the team, it has the power to control over enemies, not a bad addition to your team.

It might take a while for you to see how powerful this job is, but its definitely one of the best jobs in this Elf Online.

What MWO’s all about.

This game has many great features, including some that you may not be used to seeing in an online game, and others that you NEVER see in an online game that make it stand out in my mind..

MWORobot – This feature is totally unprecedented in any MMO. What it is is a built-in and fully-legal botting system which levels the playing field between the hardcore online gamers and those who play the games in their free time. It allows those casual gamers, if they so choose, to leave the bot running overnight or while away so that they can continue to make money for and gather levels even when the user is away. Many games have problems with people using illegal bots, but this game actually allows them, and beyond that, makes it so that anyone who tries to make one to cheat would be wasting their time. I’m not going to go into detail here about how to setup this system, but I will say that, used properly, it can be a very powerful weapon.

Questing – The game has many quests that you can embark on, including storylines and instances that you can explore. Not every quest in the game is kill this or kill that, there are some that require you to gather certain items or deliver items or messages from one place to another, and even some that must be turned in at a certain time..
The variety really takes the monotony out of questing. I won’t even mention the rewards for the quests..

Leveling – This one I have mixed feelings on. The ease of leveling really depends on what class you decide on when you first create your character. From what I’ve been told by other players, archers have trouble leveling during the level 20 range, and from personal experience, summoners have trouble leveling on their own at around level 38-40 and beyond for a while. But all this being said, it is again important to point out the MWO Robot system and its ability to do all the work for you if you so desire.. So all in all, there’s not a lot to complain about here.

Drop Rates – The drop rates in lower areas of the game are very common and often times drop rates on potions far exceed the number of health potions and mana potions you require to continue fighting, saving you tons of money and getting you some great gear at the same time. As your levels progress though you will move into higher and higher level areas, and in some of them the drop rates are so low that you’ll be making very little to no money, and sometimes even lose some money buying potions to continue to fight. For the most part though, and because the NPCs in the game buy higher level items for more gold than lower ones, it all works out in the end. (If you play this game, stay out of the Royal Prison. There are virtually no drops in there.)

Living Skills – These skills add a whole new perspective to the game. While you may have the MWO Robot to help you in battle, you must work on these skills in person. You must gather the supplies using a gathering tool corresponding to the material you are collecting, and you must repair the gathering tool from time to time as it does wear out from use while gathering. To actually create items, you must go to the production principal in a specific place (Sun City or Sky City) which is something of a neusance since you cannot see the materials needed for a specific item without being there, but over time you learn what materials are needed and it becomes less of a problem.

Mob Types – There are three categories for mobs within MWO; Normal mobs, the most common of all mobs can be found in almost all areas of the game. Elite Mobs, these mobs are a lot tougher than their normal mob counterparts, but generally match the looks of the normal mob of the same time in every respect except for the term (Elite) after their name and in most cases, a glowing aura of lights circling around them as they stand there, these can be found in most areas and spawn in various locations within the areas. Boss Mobs, the most difficult mobs out there, meant to be fought off in a team, these mobs are extremely dangerous, but their drops are often times well worth the risk and effort, these mobs can be found in specific places in the game and will always spawn in the same place in an area a set amount of time after it dies.

PvP – PvPing is a large part of this game at higher levels. I personally am not a huge PKer, but in levels beyond around level 35-40 you are forced out into areas that are known as ‘Neutral Areas’ to train for the next levels at any decent speed. In these areas, both countries (like factions) within the game train in the same area. The built in PvP system with the robots will attack other players automatically if they are set to do so. Normally it would be easy enough to turn off the PvP part of the robot and not worry about it, but even if your PvP is set to ‘off’ you can still be PvPed by someone in the opposite faction that has it on. On a side note, and with something that I’ve not seen in the game except for intentionally doing it to see what happens, it is possible for someone to PK someone of the same faction. When they do this they will receive evil points, and when their evil points are high enough, they will be sent to ‘prison’ until, over time, their evil points disipate enough for them to get out. When you PK another player of the opposite country you earn honor points. The player with the highest honor in a given faction will have a statue of them standing proud in their royal city.

Death – When you die to a monster, there is a small chance that you will drop an item on the ground as you die. When you revive in a city, you will only have a short time before it disappears to grab up anything you dropped to get it back, and that’s only if no one else beats you to it.. When PKed the chances are higher that you will drop items, and if you have evil points, the odds are almost 100% that you will drop something or another when you die, and it’s even possible when you have evil points to drop items that you are wearing when you die. Overall, I like this system as it prevents lower level players from trying to play in levels that are beyond them because they are too afraid to lose their items.

Guilds – The guild system in the game is prett cool, but also a little confusing. There are a lot of buildings in the guild, but a lot of them I still have not figured out the purpose of. There is a built in guild warehouse, but it will only allow for three pages of items at its highest level, and that’s not to mention how long it takes to get that high. As a guild leader myself currently, I have started an external guild warehouse system on the guild website instead of using the built in one and it works great so far.. And as for guild titles, there aren’t enough to go around. I’ve got several suggestions regarding guilds, and hopefully this system will be improved in the future..

Heads will Roll as Age of Conan moves into Open Beta

Heads will Roll as Age of Conan moves into Open Beta
– Open Beta exclusively available through FilePlanet.com and partner IGN sites –
– 50.000 aspiring barbarians may enter Hyboria on May 1st –

Durham, USA – April 15, 2008 – Funcom, Eidos and IGN are proud to announce that Open Beta for Age of Conan will start on May 1. The Open beta will be hosted exclusively by IGN’s popular game download site, FilePlanet.com, as well as being offered through partner IGN sites such as Gamespy.com, MMORPG.com, Tentonhammer.com and Warcry.com. The application pages at FilePlanet.com are now open for registrations, and gamers from across the world can sign up. As 50.000 gamers prepare their Hyborian assault, rivers of blood is about to flow, and it’s exclusively available through FilePlanet and IGN partner sites.

“When we started development of Age of Conan five years ago we truly wanted to move away from the standards of the MMO genre, and bring something fresh, new and exciting to the table,” said Gaute Godager, Founder of Funcom and Game Director on Age of Conan. “As we get ready to show everyone what Conan’s savage world is all about we first need final stress testing. That we could team up with the Beta masters at IGN was a perfect opportunity for us, and we simply couldn’t ask for a better partner for this crucial stage of our Beta.”

“The IGN and FilePlanet audience has consistently told us that Age of Conan is one of their most anticipated games of the year, and we are very pleased to partner with Funcom and Eidos on the open Beta,” says Senior Vice President of Consumer Products at IGN, Jamie Berger. “The Funcom team has developed a truly unique, visceral gaming experience that players will have to see to believe.”

Funcom would like to point out that the primary function of the open Beta is to stress test Age of Conan prior to launch. Seeing how many MMOs have failed their Beta quest in the past, Funcom will therefore cap the in-game level range. The Beta experience will still give players hours and hours of entertainment, and complete class and culture variety, while at the same time giving Funcom the needed focus for an open beta.

You are required to be a FilePlanet member in order to sign up for the open Beta. Preloading of the client will start prior to the launch of the Open beta, and applicants will receive more information should they receive a beta key. The Open beta will start on the 1st of May at 1500 GMT / 0900 EST.
Age of Conan is consistently mentioned as one of the most anticipated PC games in development. It has received more than twenty covers on high-profile gaming magazines across the globe and more than fifteen major awards, including numerous "Best MMO of E3" awards and the official "Best Online Game" award at the Games Convention 2007. Age of Conan is a key title in Microsoft’s Games for Windows line-up, and a showcase title for nVidia. The game is set to launch in several territories on May 20th, 2008.

For more information on Age of Conan – either in English, German, French or Spanish – visit the official website at www.ageofconan.com where you also can access the respective community websites.
