The better a player performs in combat, the better their reward.

The game interface has been streamlined in many areas making it more efficient. In addition, two new maps have been added to the game, Coronado and Castle Corona. The Outpost Castle Corona and its battle map Coronado have been added to the middle of the Pandea map chain, specifically at the map, Sunshine Born.
All-New Slot Machine and Expanded Cash Item Shop A slot machine has been added to the game to provide more prizes to players. Players simply purchase tokens and insert them into the slot machine to win various prizes. Some of these prizes include new Gear armor, S-type recovery kits, and even some cash shop items.  In addition, the ACE Online Cash Shop has been expanded to include the sale of buff items that remain on a player’s character for an extended period of time and will stay active until it’s time expires. Dragon Oath Interview with ChangYou Manager

Questions by Vincent Haoson, Onrpg writer
Answered by Martin Tan (General Manager of ChangYou.com (US) Inc)

Onrpg:  First of all, can you introduce ChangYou to our users?
ChangYou.com (US) Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of one of the leading MMORPG developers and publishers in China, Changyou.com Ltd (NASDAQ: CYOU)

Onrpg: What should we expect from the company in the future? Are you going to publish other MMOs in the western market?
Yes.  In fact, this particular interview with OnRPG.Com is to celebrate and let all F2P MMORPG players to know that we, ChangYou (US) Inc. is about to publish our first title in the U.S. titled “Dragon Oath.”

Onrpg:  What is Dragon Oath? What is the game’s origin and what should players expect from the game?
First of all, I would like to say first that we are going to reveal the game in more detailed fashion as we begin Pre-Closed Beta in the beginning of July!

Dragon Oath is also known as “Tian Long Ba Bu” or simply TLBB.  It has around 30 million global players  with  over 800,000 daily concurrent users in China alone.  Dragon Oath is almost finished with its westernization, and its final stage will be a public beta testing called Pre-Closed Beta; inviting very limited players from the public to finalize the westernization process.
What players can expect from Dragon Oath are so many, but I will mention the most important thing that the U.S. players value the most; the Community.
Dragon Oath is built from the beginning to be a Community based MMORPG that highly promotes players to party-up and follow quests rather than simply grind and level up.  Unlike other games, Dragon Oath gives reasons for all players to play with others rather than alone.  A lot of special features that “Dragon Oath” has will automatically encourage players to build a Friend-Line or so called a Group.  Players will play together, make friends and enjoy countless quests that it provides.  Therefore, other than those players who love to play alone with no interactions and cooperation with others, I am certain that everyone will enjoy Dragon Oath.

Onrpg:  What are the different job classes players can use? Can you give details for the classes?
Dragon Oath features 9 classes, Assassin, Beggars Alliance, Lotus Order, Minstrel, Pyromancer, Royalty, Shaolin, Taoist and Voodoo.  I will provide OnRPG.com with a brief introduction for each.
Assassins are the masters of the physical and ice attacks, dealing quick powerful combos, but the most terrifying skill is their ability to move unseen.
The fighting style of Beggars Alliance is based on a series of moves that build and increase the strength of their next attack.  The apprentices base their attacks on the physical and the use of poisons miked from venomous snakes and insects.
The Lotus Order apprentices usually study the personal virtues of the Buddha to pair with their Kung Fu.  Their studies have given them abilities and skills to not only absorb damage, but also to heal as well.
The Minstrels are often depicted as na-er-do-wells and charlatans who prefer not to meet challenges head on.  They rely heavily on traps and devices to confuse their enemies.   Their devices normally implore the aid of magic and fire elements.
Pyromancer Kung Fu is characterized by preemptive attacks; they give up defense for a short while in order to have the most powerful attack among the nine classes.  Pyromancers believe the Holy fire will bless them to be reborn and will choose to die in combat rather than flee from battle.
Royalty Kung Fu prefers to use the finger instead of the sword and is most famous for the ‘Six Veins Divine Sword’ which attacks the body’s vital points to stun the target or reduce the target’s magical power.  Royalty Kung Fu is much harsher in training and over time builds up the apprentice’s resistance to poison, fire, thunder, and ice based attacks.  It is said that Royalty Kung Fu is the bane of magic users.
Shaolin Kung Fu has a long history and is trademarked by its legendary iron body skill providing both tremendous offensive and defensive power.   Fighting with the same force and power of a thunderstorm, the Shaolin always defend their companions first and then themselves when in a group.
Taoist Kung Fu has the strongest mastery of the elements of magic, leveraging heavily on their mastery of thunder, and fighting enemies from afar.  It is believed that the Taoist philosophy, which is ingrained in their training and promotes going with the flow and living simply and in harmony with nature, cultivates leaders of men.
Voodoo Kung Fu is the weakest of the martial arts and relies heavily on the use of poisons to inflict damage, in most cases before the battle has even begun.  The Voodoo has developed a strong defense against magic.

Onrpg:  Can you reveal anything about the game’s storyline at this early stage?

The story behind Dragon Oath revolves around an elaborate saga of complex, troubled relationships among numerous characters from various kingdoms and sects during China’s Northern Song Dynasty.  The warring empires involved in the story are those of Song, Liao, Dali, Western Xia, and Tubo.  The struggles the characters experience within their combating factions affect the bonds between themselves and their families, societies, ethnic groups, and countries.

As a result, strife and conflict abound, and each player will find himself quickly pulled in to the fray, striving to evolve and leave his mark. Part of this evolution involves choosing one of the nine martial arts classes.  Once chosen, the player’s class will foster development of uniquely powerful skills and abilities that will define the player as a true force with which to be reckoned.

Onrpg:  What are the key features the game will have upon release?

The Game has so many features, it’s really ridiculous for a free to play game, but let me highlight some here: The game has a relationship system, which players can marry, form families, become teacher/disciple and more. Also, the pet system is also very nice because of the number of available pets, and the ability to breed new pets. Another nice feature is the fashion system, which the player can change their appereance without affecting the character’s attributes.

The 24/7 nonstop in-game events system is also very interesting, and it offer content for the player whenever they play the game. Lastly, the unique class mount feature provides more variety to the game.

Onrpg:  What do you think is the game’s main pull especially in a region where players are already riddled with other note-worthy MMOs out? And not so note-worthy.

The Western Market is no doubt becoming saturated with Asian Imports. We know our game is one of the more successful games in the Asian market for a few reasons, which we hope will translate well to North America. But the most important thing we can offer besides a quality product is the community we foster around it.  We plan to go to great lengths to satisfy Western users with levels of customer support unseen in typical free-2-play games , as well as carefully select and train community managers and liaisons to make sure we are not only speaking with and listening to our users – but also adapting our games and service quickly for you.

Onrpg:  Being that the game is originally coming from China, one of the game’s biggest challenges could be the mistranslation of Chinese words into English. How confident are you in your translations?
I will have to say that it was not easy but very professionally done.  I am very confident that all players will not have any trouble as far as the translation is concerned because we have gone through so many different translation stages to make it a complete one.  It is Americans who translated to make it fit the best.

Onrpg:  What is the company’s goal for the game?
We are very aware of the current F2P market situation where players are very tired of playing Asia-styled MMORPG that are full of grindings. Through Dragon Oath, our most important goal is to make players play Dragon Oath and let them know of the depth of the game contents.  In addition, we simply want to bring them to join Dragon Oath and enjoy the community that it brings to all players and let players know how the game play itself leads to the improvements of their characters rather than grinding.

Dragon Oath is already known as a very different F2P MMORPG in the global market.  I wish that the U.S. players know this as well after a try.

Onrpg:  What should players expect from Dragon Oath in the succeeding months? What will your schedule be?
Our official teaser landing page will be launched on June 12th.  The Pre-Closed Beta, which is a public beta test for a limited numbers of players to participate in the final stage of Dragon Oath westernization will begin in the beginning of July for 5 weeks.  Then, the official Closed Beta will begin on around August 10th, and September 10th will be the launching date of Open Beta.  We will soon make an official announcement for the recruitment of the testers for Pre-Closed Beta soon through our main website and OnRPG.Com.  All players!  Get ready!

Onrpg:  Thank you for your time!
I truly appreciate the time and effort that OnRPG.Com has spent for the preparation and publication of this interview.  Thanks!

Ghost Online Review: Ghosts, Spirits and Souls?

By Mohammed Afzal (MageMoa), Onrpg Journalist
Ghost Online, a unique side scrolling MMORPG has broadened our horizons. You may think; what is he talking about? Well, let me explain! Ghost Online is one of the few existing side scrollers which has an English version. Many similar side scrolling MMORPGs have not been able to survive in the though MMO industry, but Ghost Online has always been able to keep its head above the ground.
The game has many versions: A Global version (Netgame), a Malaysian version (Gameflier), a Vietnamese version, a Chinese version, a Japanese version, a Korean version, a Taiwanese version, an Indonesian version and a Thailand version. A game with nine different hosts (two English ones) must have something special. But what exactly has made Ghost Online so popular and why is it still alive and kicking?

Storyline

The storyline of Ghost Online is really amusing. It tells us more about the history of the game and you will find out what exactly you have to do. Let me quote a part of the storyline, written on Gameflier’s Ghost Online site.

“In the far and mythical alternate dimension, humans had done so many sinful acts that all of their spirits were sent to the Abyss to pay for the guilt that they had done in their past life.
However, even the Abyss did not have sufficient space to confine such amount of guilty spirits. This had caused a great chaos as the evil spirits that stay in the human realm continued their evil acts; hence threatening all the beings in the human realm and Abyss.
In order to restore the balance of nature, many adventurers had decided to join their power to send the evil spirits back to the Abyss. After a series of critical battles, a great adventurer by the name of Lord Tai He who led his 12 apprentices have managed to seal the evil spirits in the Temple of Ghosts. However, Lord Tai He had faced the corruption of his own spirit when the battle had finally ended. In order to cleanse his soul, Lord Tai He had assigned “Weak Plum” (yet to be confirmed) to lead the remaining apprentices while he set out to the western land to search for Grass of Millennium, the cure to stop the corruption.
Unfortunately, Rotten Flower, the other apprentice, felt that he should be in command and decided to take over the place of Weak Plum when Lord Tai He was out searching for the Grass of Millennium. So, Rotten Flower led his minions to the Temple of Ghosts to get rid of Weak Plum who was trying to complete the seal of the evil spirits. The battle between the force of order and chaos is about to begin.”
The story gives you a great idea about what is going to happen and you will be able to choose a side; Order or Chaos. What I also like about the storyline is that the story actually continues in the game, which gives you more motivation to play Ghost Online until the end!

Gameplay

The character creation of the game is quite disappointing. You will be able to choose between a few faces and hairstyles, which means that you will see many clones of yourself ingame. The movement is another annoying part of the game. You walk incredibly slow and running consumes SP, which will lead to a lack of SP through the whole game.
The Soul System makes up for all the negative parts of the game. It is a great and original feature of the game which allows you to absorb the souls of dead opponents. You can do this by holding Ctrl after defeating an enemy. There are four different soul categories. Let me explain them briefly;

Red Soul – The Red Souls will increase your Rage Points ingame. These Rage Points can be used to activate the Rage skill which basically makes you stronger for a while.
Blue Soul – The Blue Souls restore 20% of your SP after absorbing them.
Purple Soul –  The Purple Souls will increase your Seal Equipment points. These Seal Equipment points can be used to upgrade your equipment.
Green Soul –  The Green Souls restore 40% of your SP after absorbing them.

The combat of Ghost Online is very action based; You have to take your enemy out as fast as you can while keeping yourself alive and consuming the soul of the enemy.  The only negative part of the combat is that the game doesn’t really have any kind of combos or special battle attacks.

Classes

The classes of the game might not look really unique, but Ghost Online’s class system is actually pretty unique. First of all, you will start out as a Novice. Novices lack power and they level incredibly slow. You might feel like quitting before reaching level 10, because of the endless grind as a Novice.
When you reach level 10, you will be able to choose between four classes; Mage, Champion, Warrior and Assassin. After reaching level 40, you will be able to choose a Faction; Order or Chaos. This will affect your character and change it completely. After choosing a faction, you will be able to gain your next promotion and after this second promotion is complete, you will be able to rebirth when you reach level 110. This sounds very complicated, so let me explain it for each class:

Warrior: After reaching level 10, you will be able to become a warrior. The warriors in Ghost Online mainly use swords and blades to fight. They are physically strong, but they are weak against magical attacks. When a warrior reaches level 40, he will be able to choose a side; Order or Chaos?
If a warrior picks Order, he will become a Blade Master. If he decides to pick Chaos, he will become a Destroyer. When a Blade Master or Destroyer reaches level 110, he will be able to rebirth to become even stronger!

Mage: If you decide to become a mage at level 10, be warned. Mages are really hard to level and they require some knowledge of the game. They have a low amount of health and defense and their offensive spells cost a lot of SP, which means that you will need a lot of SP potions to survive. When a mage reaches level 40, he will also be able to choose a faction.
If he picks Chaos, he will be advanced into a Black Mage. If he decides to choose Order, he will become a White Mage.
A Black Mage mainly focuses on offensive magical attacks and a White Mage mainly focuses on buffs, heals and protection magic to help its allies.

Assassin: Great choice! They can level quickly without dying as often as a mage.  Assassins use claws to damage their enemy with melee damage and they are also able to use gloves to throw shurikens to kill their enemy from a distance. When an assassin reaches level 40, he has to pick a faction, just like all the other classes.
If he decides to pick Chaos, he will become an Asura, but if he prefers Order, he will become a Ninja. One of them uses shurikens while the other prefers melee attacks.

Champion: This is probably the most unique beginner class of the game. They use big axes to deal heavy damage or chakrams to attack their enemies quickly. Champions can deal the highest physical damage of all the classes, but their defense isn’t as good as the warrior’s and they are not as fast as an Assassin. When a Champion reaches level 40, he will have to choose a faction.
If a Champion decides to join the Order’s side, he will become a Royal Prime, but if he rather joins the Chaos faction, he will be advanced into a Demonic Prime.

Features

Ghost Online offers its players many features. A player can have his own house after reaching level 40 and meeting the other requirements. His friends and other players will be able to visit him at his house and he can make it its own little place.
Other than regular PvP, the game has Castle Sieges and Castle Wars.  Both Castle Sieges and Castle Wars have the same purpose; You will have to try to conquer the Castle by defeating your opponents.
Castle Sieges have a limit of 30 versus 30 players while Castle Wars require a certain amount of players per team ( 15 or 20 ).
My favorite feature is the pet feature of the game. The pets are called toys and they absorb a part of the experience of their master to level up. These toys can evolve when reaching a certain level and they can give you a certain amount of bonus stats.

Personal opinion

The many features, cute graphics and the challenging classes of Ghost Online explain how the game has been able to survive.
There are always many things to do, but to keep up with your friends, you will sadly have to grind a lot, which might lead to quitting the game, since the grind can be unbearable at some point.
Even though the game has a few downsides, it can be seen as one of the best 2D MMORPGs and I can promise you that you will have a great time playing this game!

Pros:
– Challenging classes
– Many unique features
– Original Soul System
– Cute, appealing graphics

Cons:
– Slow movement
– Endless grind

Last Chaos Review – No more Chaos, please!

By Dane Frandsen (Lefos), OnRPG writer

Before this review get’s started, allow me to say that this is not my first time playing Last Chaos.  I played the game a couple years ago, shortly after the initial US launch of the title from Aeria Games.  At the time, I was running on a much weaker system than my current, and was forced to cease playing after about 20 or so levels, yet I felt no real loss upon my quitting the game.  Fast forward to the present, and I can completely understand why I didn’t really care about not being able to play.

The world of Last Chaos

A fairly decent story sets the backdrop for Last Chaos.  Two gods had created the world; Eres God of darkness created the elves, while Apollon God of light had created the humans.  Over time, Eres had become jealous of Apollon, and the joy he brought to the people.  Driven by jealousy, Eres had amassed a large army.
With his army of evil creatures came the Titans, a race of nigh invincible warriors created by Eres.  Angered by this, Apollon bestowed an army of humans with great skill, creating the Knights of Apollon.  Many years into the struggle, more were called on to aid both sides: rogues, mages, sorcerers, and healers.  After many years of fighting, the two Gods retreated, each worn from his battle with the other.  In his weak state, Eres was forced to sever his ties with the Titans, taking with him their invincibility.
Years passed with a standoff between the two forces, while the armies slowly began to fall apart.  Several years passed, a peace finally setting in.  However, as our game does need a story, the peace does not last, with a new army appearing.  This is where the game picks up.

A call to arms

At the start of the game comes what you should expect from a game these days, character creation.  You’re given six classes to choose from: Knight, Titan, Mage, Healer, Sorcerer, and Rogue.  With each class comes a total of three different hairstyles, and three different facial styles.  Add in that all the classes are gender locked, and you’re looking at one of the more restrictive character creation systems in recent years.

Character development is a tedious affair of receive quest to slay enemies, slay enemies, turn in quest, and repeat.  This can take some time, as the game’s EXP curve is rather harsh.  With each level you will acquire an astonishing ONE stat point.  Yes, just one stat point each level.  While the game is still playable, this little detail does feel as though it was engineered purely as an artificial difficulty increase, and a poor one at that.

General gameplay

Despite a few rather nice features (See the next couple paragraphs for more on those.) Last Chaos is exactly what most MMORPGs are these days.  You create your characters, you point and click to move, and you click enemies to attack, while using the number keys to quick select skills, spells, and items.
Item creation, something that has become a sort of requirement for MMORPGs over the past few years, is also included in the game.  Items are used to create equipment for use by yourself, or other players.

As mentioned, the game has zero WSAD movement support.  When the game was initially released, this was the norm.  However, three years down the road some form of added in support for what has become to the most prominent movement control would be very much appreciated.
While I’m on this tangent about worn-out elements, let me address a large pet peeve of mine.  Player owned market s that are run in the middle of towns.  There was a time when no better way of mass trading items was available to games, and this was widely thought to be the best.  However, in this age of games with auction houses, dedicated market areas, and cross-server trading systems, these are nothing but an annoyance; generating large amounts of lag and cluttering your screen.

Personal dungeons

In an attempt to help you with your levels, Last Chaos has a rather nifty personal dungeon system.  With this system, you may enter your own instanced dungeon, free from the annoyance of bots, kill stealers, or that one annoying guy that everybody eventually meets.  Inside these areas, enemies have a set spawn, but they seem to spawn at an increased rate.  This makes the combat feel a bit more fast paced, adding in a thin layer of tension.

Exciting Range of Aggressive Battle System (E.R.A.S.)
One of the game’s features that, I will admit, I rather enjoyed was the ERAS system.  With this system, any attack you perform will actually hit any enemy caught in the sweep.  Let’s say there are three skeletons in front of you, and you target the center one.  Now, provided that the skeletons are close enough, you will hit all of them with the swipe of your sword, dealing damage to each one.  To further improve upon this, you’ll find that the damage does not receive any reduction (If it does, then it isn’t noticeable at the earlier levels.) to the individual target damage.  My one large complaint is that the sweeps, swipes, and slashes of my blade varied widely with no real pattern to them, sometimes making this otherwise amazing mechanic quite useless.

Poor Design and Poor Music

For its age Last Chaos looks good.  However, as many things do, these graphics have not aged well.  There isn’t any real charm to the appearance of… well, anything really.  Textures are muddy and the game’s UI is just atrocious.  Character design is rather poor, with even higher up armor lacking any real flair to it.

Sound wise, I can’t complain that much.  The game’s sound effects are there, and they get the job done.  Music is where the sound lacks, though, with tracks that are bland and repetitive.

No more Chaos, please!

In the end, Last Chaos is a competent game.  It’s a standard point and click MMORPG with a few nifty gameplay elements thrown in.  However, the big problem with these elements is that they come off as a couple gimmicks.  They fail to cover up the game’s obvious problems, mainly: the terrible design, standard gameplay, steep EXP curve, and boring…EVERYTHING.

Again, the game isn’t bad, not by any means.  It’s just extremely boring.  There is a LOT of potential in this game, and I’d love to see it either revamped, or at least future games to borrow the ERAS and personal dungeon systems.

Pros:
– ERAS system allows for easy fighting of enemy mobs.
– Personal dungeon system helps with leveling.
– Decent story sets a nice backdrop.

Cons:
– Poor graphics combine with the games poor character design to hinder the overall experience.
– No WSAD support makes movement annoying.
– Bland sound gets repetitive quite quickly.
– Overall standard gameplay leaves the ERAS system unable to reach its full potential.
