2029 Online Preview: Sci-fi RTS on a whole new scale
By Vincent Haoson
The role-playing genre has become the center MMO style of game play that developers have often used in their games, but now there are a few games that have taken a different route. Real-time strategy MMOs have emerged into the MMO scene. One example is the sci-fi MMORTS from IGG, 2029 Online.
The Storyline
2029 online is set on an alien planet named Helen Continent. The humans have left the war-devastated Earth, seeking a new home where they can live and prosper. Upon landing they found out that the planet is under constant war as the other races that have inhabited the planet strive to be supreme. The humans join the fray to try and take part in this power struggle. As the war progressed only a few of the races remained, they are the Humans, the Dryads, the Electronic Elves, the Ice Energy and the Mechanicals. The five races of Helen Continent have gradually settled into a peaceful co-existence.
This is the backdrop of the world of 2029 Online. You get to choose from the five different races that have been part of the war in Helen Continent. IGG has remained tight lipped until now in regards on the skills and the overall description of each race. Well just have to wait for it as the development continues on.
Gameplay
The game boasts that it has successfully mixed Real-Time Strategy with Role playing elements into one game. Real-Time Strategy is said to be part of the battle system as you have to think of various elements when you are in a battle. Descriptions of the RTS elements also include that you can build your own base, create your own heroes and even destroying your enemys army.
Alongside the RTS-RPG feel of the game, there is an in-game mercenary system that is included. This system gives players a higher chance of surviving a dungeon especially when they are not included in a party. Mercenaries can be included in the dungeon you are in as you start, you can choose from four types of mercs and they are: the swordsman, soldier, gun fighter and the sniper. You can control your mercenaries as you play in the area you are in and they also die if you are not careful.
The details regarding the mercenaries are still sketchy as of this moment, if including them in your party would mean that the experience points you gain is also halved and what not. The only thing that is sure now is the kinds of mercenaries you can use and that they disappear upon death or that when you change scenes or log out.
Besides the RTS-RPG feel of 2029 Online, the game also includes vehicles into the mix. The in-game vehicles that your character can use helps out by boosting your characters stats and may leave lasting effects as you enter dungeons. The vehicles which are known as Armored Fighting Vehicles, loosely called AFV, have upgradable and customizable parts. These vehicles would serve as either your protection or your extra arm in dealing out pain.
Revealed Facts
Like the mercenary system, there has been no clear information regarding the AFV found in-game. Though 2029 Online promises customizability of your vehicle, there are still a lot of questions left unanswered, but as the game nears beta, you can finally get to see what you can do with it.
Another feature in the game that is uniquely used by 2029 Online is the Guild System. Unlike in other MMOs where guild member numbers do not necessarily affect how strong the guild is, in 2029 Online, the number strength of your guild is dependent on the amount of members that it has.
The guild system is in fact unique in that aspect. The way guilds are done in 2029 Online may in fact eliminate people from creating small and dead guilds that have plagued f2p MMOs. Though it may seem problematic when it comes to guild balance especially when people start flocking to only a few guilds, this system has yet to prove that the theory behind it can be fun.
Initial Impressions
2029 Online does have a lot of innovative features to make it equal to some of the games of the same genre. The game promises and boasts about a lot of functionalities, but these have yet to be seen to be believed in. The skill system is the first thing you need to look into. As the game is considered as a skill-centered game, it is important that we get to see what the skills are. True, there is variety in the races in 2029 Online, but what makes them set apart from the other races in the other games? Would they have the common skills that we often see in games that include these races into their roster?
Another thing is the AFV system. I cant deny that it is an attractive addition to the overall game experience, but the question I have in the back of my mind is if it is that spectacular as the game information provides? The customization feature is also something that IGG needs to clarify. How customizable is customizable? Admittedly this would be one of the main player earners for 2029 Online but the question is up to what extent can you customize?
Also the pvp and guild system needs to be really cleaned out. If this is in fact an RTS then this aspect of the game should be given a lot of attention to. How would pvp work? It is fun if we go against other players on a battlefield RTS style trying best each other out, but how will it be done?
These are but a few of the things that IGG needs to really shed some light at. However I cant deny the fact that 2029 Online is an interesting game, with the features and the game system included. There are still rough edges with the game but with proper time in developing, this can be a jewel of a game.

AdventureQuest Worlds: event attracts 32000 players!
Over 32,000 online gamers participated in Artix Entertainments MMORPG AdventureQuest Worlds “Un-Live Event” held on Friday the 13th.
The companys first ever live event starred musical guest Voltaire, who Artix CEO Adam Bohn describes as a “gypsy pirate Goth musician.” Voltaire is best known for songs including “Brains” and “Land of the Dead” in the Cartoon Network show The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
The “un-live” event, so described because of the cast of “un-live” pirate characters, was a five-act adventure with all new art, voice acting, music, cut-scenes, boss monsters, tons of new items for both upgraded and free players, and the introduction of AdventureQuest Worlds first war meter.
“The response was so overwhelming that we have decided to continue running the event for one more week,” said Bohn.
AdventureQuest Worlds, which launched in mid-October, has captured the interest of over five million players so far, and they are opening their free accounts at the rate of 200,000 per week.
The Warlords: Voyage Quests & Nobility Rank
The Voyage Quests
The Voyage is an innovative quest system in the Warlords. As the riots and unrest are widely spread in the territory of the kingdom, the Qing court wants experienced warriors to crush the troubles for them. Therefore, no matter if you are an imperial soldier or a bandit, the supreme authority will reward you with bountiful awards once you complete these urgent missions.
The requirements for the Voyage Campaign are strict, and vary from one campaign to another. After receiving a Voyage Campaign, players need to depart for the destination within a certain time, by ship. Every campaign requires players’ team work. When the campaign starts, the player with the highest Kungfu in the map will be assigned as the campaign Commander. As the team leader, the Commander has to plot the tactics and arrange the force deployment. In return, when the campaign is successfully completed, the Commander will receive extra rewards.
For the team members, they have to fight for their lives during the campaign. Because when the campaign begins, the system will record the contribution of each member. For those whose contributions are under the bench mark set by the system, they will be unable to gain the rewards, even if the campaign was completed.
Rank of Nobility
The constant wars and natural disasters have driven the Qing court to the brink of collapse. To alleviate its financial burden, the emperor would confer anyone who donates enough silver to the imperial government into the nobility, no matter which way you earned the money. The noble ranks are not just a mere title of honor, more importantly, they can give players the bonus of Kungfu which directly affects the character’s battle performance.
Depending the amount of the donation, there are 5 ranks of the nobility: Baron, Viscount, Earl, Marquis, Duke and Prince (Princess). There is a limitation for the number of Prince/Princess, Duke, and Marquis. If your donation exceeds the amount from a current high-ranked player, you will replace him/her to take up the title. For the titles of Earl, Viscount and Baron, there is no number limitation. So once you have donated enough silver, you will be granted the title.

Vanguard – Saga of Heroes Review: For Serious Roleplay
By Rick Charbs (Jammart), Onrpg writer
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes was an MMORPG developed primarily by Sigil Games Online, and was soon taken in by SOE (Sony Online Entertainment), whom now run and develop this title. Without much experience in the 3D MMORPG genre, I compared this title heavily to Everquest II, a game I had previously played, and found many similarities (which seemed to have been relevant as they are now both currently developed by the same people).
Being a p2p MMORPG, it is clear that a lot of time and effort has been put into this game, but is it truly worth the money? This review should offer you a little insight on the matter.
General Gameplay
With many races, classes, and items to choose from right from the beginning, it is safe to say there are almost limitless possibilities to customise your character with. In fact, it is rare to find a character that looks identical to yours, which is a definite plus! Along with this near customisation factor is the in-depth skill system, which furthers the character classes uniqueness. This basically goes to say that if you enjoy having a personal connection to your character and enjoy role playing, Vanguard may just be that one game for you.
To look on the wider-spread gameplay aspects of Vanguard SoH (Saga of Heroes), three aspects of game play are divided into groups called spheres: adventuring, crafting, and diplomacy. There is also known to be a harvesting sphere, but it lacks so much in content that it is often set aside and ignored. Each of these spheres is a whole new way of playing the game, and so there are individual inventories for each sphere (this way, when you go craft, for example, your crafting equipment will automatically equip and save you the hassle).
First order of business: the adventuring aspect of the game. Much like most traditional medieval MMORPGS, the adventuring aspect of the game involves conquering dungeons, completing quests, fighting baddies, and of course, collecting treasure. One may choose from 1 to 15 adventuring classes, and all are encouraged to play in groups. Solo content is available; however the best rewards are saved for those who fight together. Groups are generally composed of a wide variety of classes to improve effectiveness in tight situations (ranging from tanks, to healers, to damage-dealers).
Secondly, the crafting aspect of the game! The crafting sphere offers a system of collecting recipes and materials to then produce them into items. At most times, the smaller harvesting sphere compliments the crafting aspect (you must harvest to collect raw materials). After acquiring a set amount of experience in one specific crafting trade, one of three more specific crafting classes may be chosen which then branches off to other classes: Outfitter (Tailor or Leatherworker), Artificer (Carpenter or Mineralogist), and Blacksmith (Armorsmith or Weaponsmith). Outfitters create cloths, linens, and leather armors, artificers build ship parts, house parts, jewellery, and many other trinkets, and the blacksmith takes care of crafting plate armors and weapons.
The third playable sphere in the game is the diplomacy sphere. This unique sphere basically consists of a card game. Without getting into detail on how this card game is played, the rewards for advancing in this sphere are nearly requirements for high-end characters. Things such as character titles, guild houses, and special guild buffs are awarded to players who are at a high diplomacy level of experience.
Lastly, the harvesting sphere is often looked over. As previously mentioned, it simply consists of gathering items from their raw sources in order to use them in crafting.
Another wonderful part of this game is the geographical complexity. Home to three large continents and various islands, Telon (the game world) is host to many different climates and regions, and thus allows for a great deal of exploring!
Graphics and Sound
Vanguard SoH has a wide variety of both graphics and sounds, and they were pretty good quality (I suppose you get what you pay for), although personally it lacked in originality. I kept hearing and seeing the same things over and over even though they were different, either I had seen them or heard them previously in the game, or in a different 3D fantasy MMORPG. The sounds and graphics work very well with the game; they just failed to leave me in awe. I would not discourage someone from playing the game based on its appearance and its sound.
Personal Recommendation
It is quite difficult for me to judge this MMO as I enjoyed so many parts of it, as well disliked many parts of it. I feel somewhat indifferent towards the title. I really enjoyed the customisation, the various classes, the easily explored world, and the three main spheres of gameplay that allowed for such varied playing of the game. I disliked the graphical aspect of the game as it lacked some serious uniqueness, and I also disliked the traditional MMO barrier this game had. There was room to grow, but you really need to enjoy a raw fantasy setting to thoroughly indulge yourself in the games storyline.
Vanguard has a lot to offer, such as player housing, guilds, various mounts, tons of skills and attributes, many races and classesthe whole lot. If you are ready to roleplay seriously, and pay the subscription fee, which in my opinion is too expensive for what its worth, then Vanguard SoH is definitely the game for you. If you wish to simply try it out, a short trial version of the game is available; check it out! Happy gaming!
Pros
– Great customisation
– Varied aspects of gameplay
– Many races, classes, skills, and items
– Wonderful game world
Cons
– Subscription fee
– Lacks originality
