How To Spot a Video Game Villain

A guide by Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

This article was originally featured in Thirteen1 Gaming Magazine: October Issue.

Villain: The JokerThey’re out there… waiting for you to make your move… eventually hitting you when you least expect it. It is very hard to determine which character would end up as the villain. It’s really fantastic how they change the flow of the story just by doing one dastardly deed, converting them from protagonist to antagonist. Even if some remains as the villainous understudy instead of becoming the mastermind, these people are still deadly and deserves our full attention. If you are willing to fight for the sake of macabre and evil, then I suggest you go ahead and read another article; however, if you’re yearning to seek truth and justice, here’s a couple of stereotypical villainous classes to help you distinguish the banes of the video game world.

The classes:

10) The Chancellor/Advisor

These treacherous beings are the most cliché among videogame villains. Always the nice person with comforting words, telling the heroes to move on while they carry on with their devious plot. Their tactics are simple but quite profound. Despite these wretches’ predictable behavior and attack point, most heroes seem to be reeled in like stupid fishes. Their goal is simple: Learn everything you can from your opponent and use their strategy against them. A cheap trick if you ask me. So if ever you encounter a counselor/chancellor/adviser, you’ll know whom to blame if something goes wrong.

Example: Grand Apothecary Putress (World of Warcraft), Chancellor (Chrono Trigger)

9) The Underdog

Much like the chancellor, these are people who are on the brink of turning evil due to mass failures and “loserdom”. These individuals may look puny at first, but don’t take them too lightly as these individuals often hit you back with their pain and agony (times two). What’s good about these people is that they would regularly remain as an understudy and would lack the brainpower to become a full pledged mastermind (except if they were smart to begin with). Their villainous ways only revolve around their emotions, which makes them easy to break regardless of their powers. If there’s a loser in your party… just kill him/her

Example: Zeke Jebediah (Infamous– though he’s just plain stupid and is still on the verge of understanding his actual alignment), Dr. Wily (Megaman), Cole (Infamous– hey, it’s your choice)

8) The summoned creature

It won’t take a genius to know how dangerous it is to trust an inhuman being from another world. These unruly beings are normally summoned by warlocks or other diabolical magic users. When it looks at you with a smile, do know that it’s merely expressing its hunger and is currently looking at its next meal. To sum it all up… You see a summoned being, kill it asap…. unless you can control it.

Example: Felguard (World of Warcraft), Lavos (Chrono Trigger), Bahamut (Final Fantasy Advent Children), Doom Train (Final Fantasy)

7)The Summoner

Behind every summoned creature is a dastardly summoner. The interesting part about these incomprehensible fools is that they would often be consumed by the ones they summoned. Whether it’s escaping their summoned creature’s wrath or just plain dying at the sight of their glory, these people must be stopped before they summon more infamous creatures. These villains are the masters of self sacrifice and would often just sacrifice themselves to make the world suffer more. Diabolical yet stupid.

Example: Magus (Chrono Trigger), Majordomo Executus (World of Warcraft), The King (Prince of Persia 2009)

6) The Cool Guy

Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII)Yes! It is quite evident that the good character who would often be cooler than the hero would be the next epitome of evil. You would normally be able to use them at first, since the game is such an @$$ when it comes to tricking you into loving that character. These guys don’t really need a good reason to fight the good guys. Sometimes despite their justified form of reasoning, these individuals only give lame excuses just so they could wreak havoc throughout the entire universe (or most of them at least). If not, then it would only be to piss off the game’s protagonist (who’s controlled by you!). The cool guys are people who just want to steal the spotlight. They may be annoying most of the time, but the worst part is that they are just so cool to hate.

Example: Sephiroth (Final Fantasy), Seifer Almasy(Final Fantasy), Ken Masters(Street Fighter– At least after he got controlled by Vega/Bison), Iori Yagami (Back then during the KOF 97 Orochi Saga)

 Al Mualim (Assassin's Creed)

5) The Master/Teacher/Leader

Although we’ve seen this happen on the big screen, people still aren’t used to the master being the student’s arch-nemesis. At first it’s all about training and molding his student to be the next epic hero, until things get ugly and the master becomes too much of a wuss to stand up to the forces of evil. These people are the source of great wisdom, which would be devastating if ever they fall in the wrong hands. I wouldn’t feature this class if there weren’t any cases, but just so you know: A renegade master is definitely worst than an evil student. Boy, Anakin Skywalker would be a maggot compared to these nasty muthafluffas.

Example: The Boss (Metal Gear 3: Snake Eater), Sanctus (Devil May Cry 4), Manfred VonKarma (Phoenix Wright), Albert Wesker (Resident Evil), Al Mualim (Assassin’s Creed), Kain (Soul Reaver)

4) The Proud Hero

Credo (Devil May Cry 4)In some cases, Heroes would find the need to grow stronger just to be able to take down their menacing rivals. Searching for power is good but would sometimes lead to the path of chaos and destruction. Sometimes, believing that they’re destined for greater things would drive them out of their sanity. Refusing to give up to evil doers, these individuals try to attain powers that consumes not only their bodies but their alignment as well. Most of them aren’t really blinded by power but merely their perception on what good or righteousness is.

Example: Illidan (World of Warcraft), Credo (Devil May Cry 4), Gray Fox (Metal Gear Solid)

3) The Main Character?

Fully aware that the power of evil may be more than they could ever handle, Some heroes become temporary villains by using the power of evil against their suppressors. I know that they’re still heroes but that doesn’t mean you don’t get to fight them. This case is much like the Proud Hero’s except for the fact that these villains always manage to revert back to their heroic selves. If ever you encounter these beings, try to watch their movements… and if ever they’re looking at you with the same devilish smile, get your rocket launcher and fire at will.

Example: Nero (Devil May Cry 4), Dante (Devil may Cry 4), Joey (Suikoden), Roger (Jeanne D’Arc)

Dante (Devil May Cry 4)

2) The Idealist/Truth Seekers

Idealists or Truth Seekers are mostly found in anime shows. These are individuals who have seen the horrors of the world and have lost the will to carry on with their holy crusade. Some of them just have a different goal to begin with. It’s a given fact that most heroes don’t know jacksh!7 until the final battle. Any hero who realizes the truth before this given time turns into a villain after a few nudges of temptation. Truth Seekers often end up as a powerful minion as well but can take the mastermind’s place through double-crossing. Idealists don’t realize their wrong doing upon losing a confrontation with the hero. Their stubborn nature merely leads them further into the heart of darkness, accepting their defeat but not their mistakes.

Example: Ocelot (Metal Gear Franchise), Delita (Final Fantasy Tactics), Sanchez (Suikoden)

1) The False Ruler

Arthas (World of Warcraft)The most stereotypical and cliché type of villain would be the false ruler. These villains are destined to be nothing more than evil masterminds and has “LORD OF DARKNESS” written all over them. They could be any of the previous nine classes who are obsessed with destroying or ruling the world. Their methods consists of every villain’s diabolical tactics and would stoop to the lowest level just to be able to kill the protagonists of the game. False rulers always have the other nine classes at their disposal along with a variety of evil minions that will end up boosting your experience. You can always thank him for that the moment you kill him; but then again, why risk getting experience for the final battle when you can just kill him before he realizes his evil destiny?

Example: Arthas (World of Warcraft), Ultimecia (Final Fantasy 8), Cefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy 4), Diablo (Diablo), Baal (Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction), Smithy (Super Mario RPG)

Earth Eternal Preview: No Humans Allowed!

By Jason Gallienne (Jrgsubzero), OnRPG Journalist

Earth Eternal advertises itself as a real MMO for your browser. This is a bold statement because the best functioning in-depth 3D MMORPGs are always client-based, so far. With a fully browser based game, could they deliver the same kind of performance, similar graphics; could the depth of game-play even be compared? Earth Eternal claims not! Will they live up to these claims? Let’s see what they have to offer so far in the Beta version of their game.

No Humans Allowed

The races offered here are different than you normal MMORPG. I’m thankful for the absence of classic humans, elves and dwarves, just to see a change.  Instead there are is a wide variety of animals to choose from. Basically you’ll play as furries. Among the total of twenty-two races there are a few that stand out: a robot, a treant, a cyclops, a demon, and even a troll.  The overall setting of the game uses elements from Norse, Greek and Egyptian myths and takes place in a classical fantasy and fairy-tale environment.

Characters in Earth Eternal

The races are a cosmetic choice only and there are no differences in stats between them. You can customize the color of every part of your character’s body as well as three types of faces and height. When it comes to naming your character you’re forced to use the first and last name system. Either you come up with a full name for your character (rather pleasant because it’s so uncommon) or if you don’t have any inspiration for the moment, you can use the name generator to come up with fitting names.

After you’re finished with creating your character’s name and looks you have a choice between four classes: Knight, Rogue, Mage, and Druid. Every class is what they appear to be except for Druid, which is more of a hunter/spell caster hybrid. Now, here is where the game becomes a bit different. Every class charges up points when they use certain skills and they can release those charges in a variety of ways, depending on the finishing skill used. These are separated into magic charges and physical charges. Instead of mana or rage, you have will and might. These aren’t normal bars like you’re used to, instead you have ten Will and Might. Most spells take between 1 and 5 and stats can modify how fast they recharge. So even if you’re a mage, it’s a good idea to get some might using skills incase you run out of will. You will not be distributing stat points on level ups either, it’s automatic. The only points you can spend are skill points.

Another unique feature would be that classes can dip into other classes’ skills. Each class has their own primary abilities and next to that they have skills every class can acquire. For example, if I’m a warrior I can learn how to cast flame spear from the mage’s skills. On top of that, everyone can learn healing spells. Did I mention that skill resets are free? So there’s plenty of fun to have mixing and matching what skills you want!

Earth Eternal Castle

Fiddling around with talents and skills

This is technically a browser based game but you will still be downloading and installing things onto your computer. The game can indeed also be played in a client.

Now, about the game-play. This is your basic quest and grind game. You will be progressing through areas via the quests you’re given but sadly you cannot go back to the areas you’ve already completed. I’m used to this when it comes to newbie islands but not being able to go back to the level 1-10 place really bites. Alongside the normal quests every outpost/city has bounty boards. These bounty boards offer quests to kill 10 of a certain monster and they offer tokens and experience upon completion. These tokens can be exchanged for decent equipment and the quests are repeatable until you out-level them. The map and mini-map tell you where your quest objectives are and is really convenient. Everything is placed well and easy enough to find.

A problem I have with leveling and the skill system is the pacing. The skills are divided into tiers with are unlocked as you level. At level 6 you get skill points and you get access to Tier 2 skills. After that you get 2 skill points per level. Now here is the problem: you can’t level up your Tier 2 skills until Tier 3, which is at the far off level 20. So you’ll be stuck with Rank 2 Tier 1 skills and Rank 1 Tier 2 skills until level 20. I was expecting to level up my skills every level!

Something interesting in Earth Eternal is a game mechanic called heroism. Each time you defeat a monster the bar in the middle fills up. When it becomes full you get more luck and with more luck you get better drops. It goes down when you die but you can spend money to be resurrected with some heroism still intact.

There are no trade-skills but you can craft items at NPC trainers with materials you find off of monsters. There are also armor refashioners that let you take the stats from one item and the looks of another and combine the two! No longer will you have to choose between stats and looks, which really improves the sense of immersion into a role-playing universe!

Earth Eternal Visuals

Mediocre Graphics

Overall, the graphics are mediocre. Nothing is exceptional but nothing is terrible either. To put it into a larger context: for a browser game the graphics are really impressive and the details looks good. But for a 3D MMORPG some of the features still look very simple. Some of the monsters are imaginative just like the races you can play in the game. This originality redeems some of the generic feeling you may initially experience. Feel free to look at the screenshots and make your own decision on if you like them or not.

Whispers in the woods

The sounds are okay and everything seems to fit well. Music doesn’t pop up in most places but when it does it’s pleasant for the most part.

Beta Blues?

I will first address the biggest problem here: the performance. For a game of this visual quality it should not have such a low frames-per-second count. It starts out OK, around 30 frames per second. But then you get into the level 11-20 territory and suddenly I’m facing 8-20 FPS. The first main town, Camelot, brings me down to 5-8 FPS. This is when the town is devoid of players too. My computer is no push-over either so believe me when I say it’s the game’s fault. I also fell through the bridge that leads into Camelot once, so it all seems to nearly work. Nearly, but not quite.

Some other minor details are the loading times. These times are awful and you sometimes load in the middle of traveling somewhere. This game gave me my first experience of being killed by a loading screen. You also can’t remap any keys.

The good news is they seem to be releasing fixes at a steady pace but some of these things should have been smoothed out before Open Beta.

Money talks?

The game is completely free-to-play with an optional cash shop. Upon inspection, it has your usual exp boosts, powerful potions, and overall perks. But what might disturb some is the charms and stat-up potions. For a somewhat steep price of $30 ($10 for 30 days and even less for 24 hours) you can purchase an item that permanently increases a stat by 15%. You can also have multiple ones equipped. There are also potions that increase health points and defense by a set amount for a limited period.

Now, I have no personal problems with this as there is no PVP yet. But there are talks of a CTF type PVP coming soon and with those items in-game it would cause some major balance issues. Some players, perhaps even most, are repelled by games that are “pay-to-win”.

Some say this will be off-set by offers you can complete for free credits. If you’ve never done these types of things before: they can be difficult, frustrating, and usually require a credit card or personal information to complete. There are also talks that you might be able to buy and sell credits for in-game currency. Whether this will help non-buyers or only make buyers more powerful will be seen if and when it is implemented.

Conclusion time

Overall, this is your run of the mill MMORPG. For a browser game it looks pretty good, but it may not attract people used to high-end graphical performances. We’ll have to see what it’s like when the game is fully populated. It has a few twists thrown here and there but nothing exceptional. This game has potential to be a better game and we’ll have to wait and see where it goes from here.

Pros:
A F2P MMORPG that you can play in your browser.
– As with all games that first tart out, you have a friendly community.
– A slightly unique skill system.

Cons:
Beta bugs
– Performance problems
– Cash shop has stat boosts.

Rappelz Interview: Epic VI Solis Aurum Update

Questions by Jeffrey Kerkdijk, Onrpg Journalist
Answered by IToki, Rappelz Community Manager

Rappelz went Epic VI last month. We from Onrpg.com took that chance to interview Henry Toki, Rappelz Community Manager. What new content can we find in Epic  VI? What is Henry’s favorite aspect of the game? What improvements happened that we cannot find on the teaser site?
Read on!

OnRPG: What other new content can be found in Epic VI besides a new dungeon and a few interface tweaks?
First of all, we have a ton of new pets. Three new combat pets, the Octopus, the Naga, and the Genie are available in Solus Aurum. All of them offer new spells and abilities. There are also three new decorative Moon Rabbit pets for those who just want a cute companion. We’ve also added a new item combination system to allow players to craft enhanced items by breaking down junk items and collecting certain monster drops. Then there’s the Flea Market, which is a new area for players to set up their own shops for buying and selling. And, of course, we added a host of new monsters and items.

New Combat Pet Nagas

OnRPG: Rappelz is a big success, what is your own favorite aspect of the game? (please motivate youre answer)
The pets are my favorite aspect of the game. The customizability is fantastic, and it’s great to be able to have a partner all the time, regardless of what class I’m playing. It adds a tremendous amount to the flexibility and fun of my play style.

OnRPG: Is there any content coming in Epic VI that can’t be found on the teaser site? If so, would you like to tell us something about that?
There have been a lot of “convenience” type improvements in Solus Aurum. One of the biggest changes players will notice is a large increase in the drop rate of pet cards, making it easier to find the pet you want. Also, many buff spells have been changed to be Area of Effect, so you can buff your whole party with just one cast. We’ve also added new teleporter locations, some UI improvements, and made many high level monsters more interesting to fight.

Rappelz Town

OnRPG: How can players access the flea market? And how does the inclusion of the flea market change the way of selling and buying in Rappelz? Is it just a new location where everyone can easily go to or is there more to it than meets the eye?
The Flea Market can be accessed from any city. Players can go there and set up their own personal shops to buy or sell items, and all the important merchants and the Auction House are there too. A central market might seem like a superficial addition on the surface, but it makes commerce much easier. It also makes the cities much more pleasant to navigate and more usable for quests and other activities.

OnRPG: Will there be a skill, or class reset with the release of Epic VI?
No, there was no class or skill reset.

OnRPG: What can we do with decorative pets? Could you tell us a bit more about that? They will auto-loot for you?
Decorative pets have utility in their ability to automatically pick up items for you. Mostly they just follow you around looking cool or cute and collect loot for you. We are considering adding other functions to them over time, but we’re not ready to announce any specific plans for those yet.

Rappelz Combat

OnRPG: Can we expect to see more customization items in the cash shop coming soon? Could you give us a little more details about that?
Well, all of our decorative items are in the Item Shop for seasonal events! But beyond that, we have a couple more outfits like the Ninja and Viking costumes planned for the near future.

OnRPG: Is there a little detail that you can give us about content planned beyond Epic VI?
We’re constantly working on new content, though we unfortunately can’t announce anything specific at the moment.

Monsters in Rappelz

OnRPG: Any final words for our readers at onrpg.com?
The response we’ve gotten for Solus Aurum has been great, and we hope that more players will come and join us in Rappelz. We’ve got events running constantly throughout the holidays that anyone can hop in and enjoy!

OnRPG: Thank you for your time!
