Wind Slayer Review: Great PvP Sidescroller
By Rick Charbs, Onrpg writer
Wind Slayer is a 2D sidescroller MMORPG newly brought to the public by Outspark. It recently reached the open beta as of February 4th 2009. Mostly axed towards PvP combat, this MMO is generally overlooked by the gaming population. Most find it odd once they are struck by a sidescroller MMORPG that doesnt really revolve around fighting monsters. All combat talk aside, Wind Slayer is a very popular game in its foreign counterparts, and seems to lack its fame here in North America. Thanks to Outspark, things are starting to change. With a great deal of events and activities, Outspark has encouraged a portion of their already-large player base to join this title. Having an extremely pleasant closed beta with a great deal of accomplished work, you can now finally play the game without the hassle of searching for beta keys.
General Gameplay
As previously mentioned, Wind Slayer is very PvP oriented. With an extremely simplistic PvE system, your perspective of this title may risk changing. The current amount of content in the game is extremely limited, allowing a player to level just about to the mid-game range without much difficulty
May I remind you that I did not specify that it would not be lengthy? From then on out, there will be no monsters or dungeons for you to train in just yetplease take into consideration it is still in open beta! The non-PvP aspect of the game is quite simple, really. There is a very large array of classes, which I personally really enjoyed (at least their concepts), and a creative selection of monsters that rule over the few areas of the game. The controls are very awkward yet the game is still fast paced enough to make the combat at least enjoyable to a certain extent. Unfortunately, the job classes have few skills in the game, thus diminishing a great potential variety. There certainly is room to grow on that level.
As for the PvP aspect of the game, there is quite a lot to add. Not only can PvP battles hold up to twenty players at a time, but there are even many other perks to this games system. Three elaborate PvP modes are currently available in-game, being the level restricted mode, the unlimited mode, and the normalized mode. The level restricted mode consists of battling with players who are the same level as you. Fame points (rewarded for winning battles) can be won according to your overall performance. In the unlimited mode, there are absolutely no level restrictions and no handicaps. Every player battles with their characters current strength in this mode, so beware. Finally, in the normalized mode, every character in the fight is adjusted to match the ability of a level 40 character, ideally preparing everyone for a completely balanced and fair fight, no matter your characters current strength. This mode allows for very amusing events, as nobody has a distinctive advantage over you no matter how long you or they have played previously.
To quickly sum up events and activities, Outspark hosts many PvP tournaments with really cool rewards. They also cover every holiday with a unique event, and often hold contests with big prizes up for grabs (a Nintendo Wii, for instance)!
Graphics and Sound
Personally, I found everything related to sound and background music to be under average. Most of it was corny, and the rest was either just alright or downright obnoxious, which is too bad.
Especially during a PvP battle, I was expecting so much more. The graphics, however, seemed unique to me and I didnt mind them the least bit. However, they lacked serious variety in both monsters and characters. Everyone looked the same, and some monsters were plainly re-colors. There is also a rare distinction between high and low level armor, which seems to me like it could be easily improved. All of that aside, the graphics were very tolerable, and the UI was large but very practical.
Personal Recommendation
Wind Slayer was the first MMORPG in a very long time that completely avoided my expectations. I wont address this issue for very long, but the lag was just unbearable for the most part. This has to due with the current testing of the server, so dont expect it to be like so for too long now.
I never would have imagined the PvE aspect of the game to be so dull, and I especially never thought the PvP was going to be so much fun. Being a strict non-PvP player, I was very discouraged by the uninteresting gameplay in that respect. However, after testing out the player versus player myself, I actually found it amusing. It was one of the few times I had fun doing so. I would recommend this game if you are interested in 2D sidescrollers, but hold a particular interest (a strong one) to PvP. If that is the case for you, you will adore this game without a doubt. If you are a fan of PvP but it is not your favourite aspect of a game, you should still try the game out to broaden your perspective. If PvP is just not your cup of tea, I suggest you avoid this game altogether and avoid the disappointment. Enjoy, and happy gaming!
Pros
– Great PvP
– Fun community
– Little to no learning curve
– Lots of room for potential
Cons
– Awkward controls
– Quite laggy
– Lacking in content

Can World Of Warcraft help saving the environment?
Kotaku.com recently published the following news:
Can World Of Warcraft help saving the environment?
Possibly, according to Prof. Byron Reeves of Stanford. Appearing recently on the Living on Earth radio program, Reeves suggested that Smart Meters, which monitor household electricity usage, could be linked to WoW:
So imagine that you’re in your home, you’re signed into [the] game… and you make a decision in the game to turn off the lights in an unused bedroom [in real life]. As soon as you do that, the Smart Meter recognizes that, sends the information through the network to your computer and your house [in the game] turns a shade of green that it wasn’t before.
And if I’m using less electricity, my team might do well. I get gold pieces and points… whatever the game designers think is fun. You get feedback in an entertainment game about what you’re doing in the real world.

Splash Fighters Review: Aged Graphics But Good Controls
By Rick Charbs, Onrpg writer
Splash Fighters is a newly released MMO fighting game by Ijji. It goes by the title of 3D action game, and I suppose it lives up to it… definitely being a matter of opinion. This game is aimed at the crowd who have always enjoyed fighter action games, as well as casual games, with no real effort being done to bring in other types of gamers to this classic style. Personally not being a fan of fighter titles, I can honestly say this game was not as bad as people criticize it to be. That being said, I could easily name a few more elaborate and fun games of this genre.
General Gameplay
If you have ever played a traditional fighting game, you will be pretty prepared for Splash Fighters. Yeah, the controls are different, and the style is all new ironically, it is an older game than most, but you will still easily spot the similarities and the few differences in comparison with other online action games, but in the end, Splash Fighters follows another cookie-cutter concept.
What Splash Fighters brings to gamers is a more complex level fighting where each area in the game has more than one specific depth, allowing more structured battles, and an easier avoid rate. This ultimately means that you can fight in every direction!
The game also introduces a large cast of semi-cute characters (which are unfortunately mostly up for purchasing) ranging from spies, to space agents, to sumo wrestlers. We are also offered a very in-depth skill and technique systemeven accessories such as weapons change your fighting style (you can combine them to obtain over 100,000 possibilities).
Lastly, Splash Fighters has a very special feature that allows players to create custom skins for their characters. Essentially, this makes for a completely unique character, sky-rocketing this games customization rate.
Other than these said unique features, there is not much left to leave one in awe. The controls and gameplay modes lack originality and can sometimes be frustrating. However, one must take into consideration that even though the game is newly published, it has been developed long before most online fighting games we have today. The many combos, items, and area maps are sure to keep anyone interested as long as you are a very casual gamer. The large array of them makes the game a little more goal-oriented than most, which is a definite plus.
Graphics and Sound
To kick things off, I will be honest enough to say that the graphics did not appeal to me at all. I have previously played such similar games with better graphics that it was always running through my mind while playing this one. Of course the graphics are very old, but a small update would not hurt anyone. Despite this, most of the characters actually retain some sort of aesthetic value, especially due to the fact you can customize them entirely, and some of the game maps are creative and very large. As for sound, I am personally indifferent on the matter. I found most the background music alright (very corny at times, though), except it got too repetitive very fast. I quickly replaced it with my own media library. The sound effects were not very loud or very numbered in my opinion, so they never bothered me as much. All in all, this game truly depends on its gameplay to do it justice. If you do not mind the graphics all that is left for you is to mind the combat style of the game.
Personal Recommendation
Splash Fighters is the type of game you really need to be captivated to in order to want to play for more than a day. In all simplicity, if you enjoy fighter games and do not mind it to be dated and 3D, you will surely enjoy Splash Fighters. Their customization value is amazing, the maps are huge and interactive, and the skill possibilities are virtually endless. Another great bonus is the thriving community. You will not ever find yourself in search of a game to join, as there are tons open every hour of the day. Ijji does a great job in hosting it, and there are plenty of events to come. I trust the title is in good hands from what I have set my eyes upon so far. I found the game to have a pretty small learning curve, and skill was still involved when fighting others.
Basically, being no good at the fighting genre, it was definitely not the game for me. I started playing with no expectations, and I have learned quite a bit about it. The community was also very helpful and quite welcoming
which derives from most peoples expectations. The competitive spirit is still there, only less vivid. Otherwise, this game was just no fun for me. As I have stated, I was never a fan of this genre of MMO, and so I knew I was not going to be their number one customer. The game is just too simple and the content just flies by way too fast to keep me interested.
That being said, if you are new to this genre of MMO, I am not going to discourage you from trying the game. It may just be an amazing game for you; maybe you will discover a new lust for fighting games. I cannot say Splash Fighters was boring because I still had a great deal of fun playing it. I just lack the dedication that is needed to truly get powerful in the game. For you fighting game lovers out there, look no further! Lots of fighting awaits you if you choose to play, and I hope you enjoy you short or long-lived experience! Happy gaming!
Pros
– Large community
– Great customization
– Creative maps
Cons
– Very repetitive
– Quite dated
– Lack of content
