Nexus TK review: A Wold For Everyone To Enjoy

by Rick Charbs, Onrpg writer

Nexus, the kingdom of the Winds (or Nexus TK for short), is a classic MMORPG released by NEXON in 1997 for gamers outside of Korea, and in 2005 by the US branch of NEXON that then changed their name to Kru Interactive. Kru Interactive has been running the game ever since, and takes certain pride in their current titles. Nexus TK is a very immersive MMORPG that it almost completely player-run. Players control the economy, the events and activities, even the classes to a certain degree. This game relies strongly on player interaction, more precisely role-play, but it is not required to enjoy the game. It is set in ancient Korea, and has a very specific, yet ever-changing storyline. The atmosphere this MMORPG brings truly engulfs a player in the game’s unique gameplay and environments. This is one of the very few unique games I’ve played and thoroughly enjoyed.

General Gameplay

NexusTK is host to a very tightly-knit community. Seeing as this game completely relies on community and player’s participation, this is a big plus. Whilst only seeing a high of 500-600 players online a day, this game still makes you feel like you are a part of something huge. One of the most amusing aspects of this MMORPG is the role-play events. They consist in various (100+ different kinds) events organised solely by players. There are special boards in-game that allow you to read up on these events, and they also tell you where and when to meet the host(s) to begin the event. They can be simple games of tag, Simon says, hide and go seek …you name it! Of course, these events are all conducted with strict role-playing rules, although some players allow non-role-players to participate as well. There are also regular storyline events, which are fully controlled by staff role-players, who take on the role of various characters from the NexusTK storyline. You can assist the story real-time; it is an innovative form of entertainment! These particular events usually end with the release of a longer term event that is related to the storyline you had just assisted. The next staff event will depend on what players accomplish in that current event. These truly immerse you into the game; you really are the one who decides what will happen next in the story.

The non-role-playing aspect of the game is like your average 2D MMORPG, although the crafting systems and party battling is extremely fun. You can even participate in non-role-play events such as the Fox Hunt and the Carnage, two activities that rely on your speed and cunning to beat the enemy team (they are similar to capture the flag). I will assure you though; you do not need to role-play in this game to enjoy yourself. There are so many quests to accomplish, dungeons to explore in, and items to equip that you will have a great time adventuring alone or with friends. You really have to learn to enjoy the style though, as it is hard to get used to.

Graphics and Sound

NexusTK has gone through a few minor and one major graphical change since its release in 1997 (1996 for the Korean audience). Despite the updates, one still has to understand the classic value this game has, and that the graphics are not so amazing to your average next-gen gamer. They are very simplistic and 2D, yet very lush and colourful. I personally love the graphical style of this game. Another plus is that even though the game’s sprites have a slight anime feel to them, you can customize your character to look less anime styled if you wish. The environments in the game are alright, but some tiles are re-used and re-colored. Some monsters were re-colored as well, but it was not overdone.

NexusTK’s various background music pieces were all very nice. They were all appropriate to the game’s setting (expect some Korean instrumentals). The sound effects, however, were a little obnoxious, but you can simply mute those if they get on your nerves. There is not really anything to complain about in terms of sound though, especially for such an old game.

Personal Recommendation

To start this section off, I would like to quickly say that this game was one of my favorite ones out there. I’d also like to add that I am not much of a role-player. This game was simply so unique that it caught my eye as soon as I started playing. I was compelled to the storyline, and the community was really great. You are never bored in this game. If you get sick and tired of questing or grinding, all you have to do is check the community boards and head out to a player event. I had lots of fun in every event that I had participated in, and won a few nifty prizes as well. I also found this MMO to really give me a creative boost. I was writing so much (poetry, lore, and role-play) for the various contests and player events I had participated in. That’s right; an artist can make money by simply writing or drawing in this MMO. Needless to say, I was never really hunting for gold.

I was also very interested with the crafting and quest systems this game had to offer. Most of the quests you have to activate yourself by talking to NPCS (actually typing), and so I had a lot of fun trying to solve the puzzles and mysteries behind the quests as I gained more insight about the game. If you do not mind paying to play an MMO, and you like to role-play, or are searching for a unique MMO, try this game out. You will not regret it, and I am positive you will enjoy the players within the game as well as the endless amounts of activities and contests in the game. Happy gaming!

Pros

– great community

– thorough role-play

– compelling storyline

– player run game (classes, quests, economy)

– HUGE customization

Cons

– You have to pay to play

– Not many players in-game

– Can be time consuming

Myth War II: Client Updates and New Server Out

The people at Myth War II are giving out a special New Years Surprise! The latest version of the game has been released (1.0.4.27) with a new server with a cool name Dragon.

Client Update
1. A new fully playable server: In this updated version, the game designers have added a new server called Dragon to the game. Lord Gaea, the creator of all lives on Rarus Continent is portrayed as a titan cursed with a dragons head, wielding a huge sword and wearing golden armor. Every realm in the game is guarded by 12 dragons which are the toughest and most violent creatures in Myth War II universe.
2. No limits to players’ titles for their pets involved in combat. In this new server, players are allowed to combat with many high level pets even as newbies.
3. A new NPC trying to help correct bugged resistance distribution for reborn players. This new NPC will be found in the Church. With one click, you will get the bug in resistance distribution fixed.

New Server
The new server has been available since January 8th and new updates have all been unpacked. As a fair play is advocated, people from Myth War II hope that with the successful launch of this new server, all players can enjoy this game as much as possible.

The decision to shut down the old Myth War does not mean they chose to give up this classic MMO. Instead, most of features that worked well in Myth War have been maintained and even improved in MW2. What’s more, it is reasonable to expect Myth War ? to come out in 2009, which would probably take you into a 3D Myth World.

New publisher Uforia launches Nostale in North America

Uforia, Inc., a new online game publisher specializing in massively multiplayer online games, today announced that they will bring popular MMORPG Nostale: Global to the North American market. From January 2009, gamers in North America can play the free MMORPG by going to Uforia’s website at http://www.uforia.com.

We are thrilled and honored that this is our first title as a newly formed publisher.”

“Though they are a new publisher, the team at Uforia has a great deal of expertise and experience to bring to our partnership,” said Kevin Song at Servex. “We have complete faith that Uforia will build and bring a strong Nostale community to Nostale: Global, which will lead us to great success in the US market.”

Nostale is a free-to-play casual MMORPG which takes gamers through seventy exciting levels of the wonderful world of East Mile. Gamers can choose from one of four character classes, each with unique powers and features. The ultimate goal is to fight Dark Horn and his legion of demons in the land of death. On their way to the top, players have the choice of completing a variety of raids and acquiring a large selection of specialty cards which transform your character into one of over twenty specialty classes.

The game has its own unique sense of ownership. Each player has their own Mini-Land with a virtual player housing area where they can build their house, decorate their homes and environments to match their personality, store their pets and items and invite friends over to take a break and visit.

Nostale features a unique character progression system where characters progress to one of three classes and then are allowed to progress to specialized classes through class cards.

The game also includes an attractive set of comic-style characters that range from cute to fearsome. Players can capture monsters to fight alongside them as well as make friends with NPCs that will follow you around and be your ally in battle.

Zu Online: Pet MasterÂ’s Private Collection

In the world of Zu Online, there are tons of unimaginable items. The one with the most rumors swirling around it is the Pet Chests. Rumor says these Pet Chests contain immensely powerful pet-related items, but unfortunately they belong to the Pet Master exclusively. Among all the Pet Chests, the Gold Pet Chests are particularly awe-inspiring.

The Pet Master cherishes his collection very much and has never given even one Pet Chest to a player. So, many people have attempted to steal these Pet Chests and finally, someone succeeded in getting some Chests to be sold in the Pet Mall. Now, if you would like to pay this daredevil some money, you can get a piece of the Pet Master’s precious private collection too.

These Pet Chests contain high level pet equipment, feedstuffs, pet eggs and more inside. If you can get a Gold Pet Chest, you will be able to make your pet much stronger and better looking. It could even make it the strongest one in any battle.

Are you eager to get these cool Pet Chests now? Do not miss such a golden opportunity to enhance your pet’s power with the best chests available!

WAR: fortresses changes and more!

Mark Jacobs, General Manager at Mythic Entertainment, has posted the following message regarding the future improvements planned for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning:

Folks,
The first step in improving the oRvR experience of fortress taking went LIVE across all servers last night. The good news is that there were lots of fortresses captured and defended. The even better news is that there were no fortress-related crashes last night while these battles raged and were completed by the players. Performance in these battles was also improved, but still not where we want it to be of course. While this is a good start, continuing to improve the mechanisms behind these battles remains one of our top priorities now and going forward. Over the next few weeks, we will be working on a number of initiatives that I can now talk about.

First, the team will tweak the settings for the Fortress Lords to make sure that their power is in line with the current numbers of players expected to participate in the siege. Second, the team will continue working on optimizing the code’s performance in large-scale battles so we can increase the population cap over the next few weeks. Third, the team is looking at additional tweaking of the pop cap to ensure that it is where it needs to be in order to allow these battles to be as well-balanced (from a design perspective) as they can be. In the end, it is up to the players to decide to defend and/or attack a fortress but it is our job to make sure that the pop cap is set properly to ensure that the maximum number of defenders/attackers that can *choose* to participate is set up so that if the population hits max cap (and assuming that both sides are equally powerful), neither side has an advantage over the other. Most importantly, the team will also be looking at moving the fortress areas out to their own zones to allow an even a greater of number of players to participate, while also maintaining a high level of performance. While they are doing that, they will also be looking at ways to enhance the fortress areas to take advantage of having their own dedicated zone. This might also allow us to get slightly lower-level players into the action, either directly in the fortress sieges, and/or in supporting roles around the main action. However, we won’t move the sieges into their own zones unless we are sure that we can get either some design and/or performance improvements by doing so.

As always, we appreciate your feedback, suggestions, patience, and participation as we continue to work on these issues and initiatives. What we’ve done so far is only the first step and we have a lot more coming in the next few weeks.

Oh, and expect a major announcement from us at the end of the month regarding our plans for the next few months and beyond. It’s going to get even more interesting around these parts soon. 🙂
Mark
