Industry Master Review: Real Life its Not

By Vincent Haoson (Vincenthaoson), OnRPG Journalist

In Industry Player you are given the seat as the head honcho of a large multinational corporation. You are given a personal assistant and chief advisers in each field that you must tap into to be able to become one of the best managers in the game.

Getting Started

With you just entering the market, the game does not immediately throw you into the on-going simulation round. With the time you have before the next round starts your personal assistant will advise you to try and observe the current round. This is a good start for any new players who are trying out the game, this gives those who are not familiar with the business world, or those who are still studying about the business world enough freedom to try and test the waters first.

Your Company

As the manager of your company, you will need to know not only the ins and outs of the stock market where your company’s share is on the line. Next to that you have to balance the inner workings of your company so that you can come out the best among your competitors. The game gives you a certain position on a certain industry your company belongs to per round. The position you then have gives you almost all the power to do whatever you want so that you can be on top.

Industry Master has done a wonderful job in this aspect of the game because the game gives you the actual privileges and power your position would have in your company based on its real-life counterpart. This is one of the key simulation aspects the game has.

Investors READEH!

So imagine you have your company’s money in your grasp and you get to actually use the millions of investor money to make it into a big pot of gold for your investors and for your company. So it is important to understand that making bad decisions also affects your company position considerably. However, this is where the beauty of the simulation games comes in. You won’t necessarily have to lose your home, your car or even your PC if you made a bad investment. Everything is just a simulation of what may happen if you made a good decision or not.

The in-game market is tied to how the real industry works therefore this can serve as your testing ground for your decisions without the fear of losing your real life money. However the risk factor of this is that everything is sped up in Industry Master. One simulation round is equal to 60 minutes which is in turn translated to one month in-game time. So there is going to be a question of reliability of the processing of information for the game if you want to use the information you entered to real life. That is why it is highly recommended not to think of the game as an alternative to test out the waters of investment and treat everything you get as data you can use in real life. This is first and foremost a game and therefore it should be taken as one.

Information Overload

For an online game, I must admit that the Industry Master can pass as a very informative online game. Aside from the products and the industry information you get, the game also provides information and definition on various business terms and concepts. The terms and concepts are based on the actual terms and concepts used in real life which is a good thing because this can be a seen as a nice alternative way of learning. This is good for students of business because they can see how the concepts and terms they have learned or are learning in school are being used in actual practice.

Meanwhile, this can serve as an alternative teaching tool for people who are highly interested in the world of investments and would like to learn the ropes. A word of caution for those who are not familiar with the business industry, the business jargon that the game throws at you is in volumes and it would feel as if a big book about business is being stuffed into your head. Still, if you are willing enough to suffer and learn painfully then this is a good way of learning.

Conclusion

All in all, Industry Master is a game that has successfully used online gaming as an alternative tool of learning for students and would-be investors. The game provides information that you would have to normally pay for in the form of a college degree or big books. The game goes past that and provides you an actual training ground that teaches both how the market is and how rough it can be. However, players who see this as a nice way to test out their skills in the business world must remember that this is a game. Unless you do try to get around the information that you get here then it is highly advisable to not use the actual data you get here in your real life investments.

It is your money that is on the line and it is foolhardy to rely on information taken in such an accelerated pace lightly, regardless of its simulation value. True, the game has masterfully succeeded in creating a real-time business simulation game, but it is still just a game. If you want know how things are being done in the market then this is a good choice as your training for the real thing. Just be sure that you invest enough money for headache pills before you start playing because this one’s going to give you one big headache.

Pros:
– The game does a wonderful job of creating a simulated business world
– You can learn about business trends and how the business world works through playing
– The game is done in real time so you won’t get bored as you play.

Cons:
– The game is for a niche group of people
– Casual players would find the game hard to understand
– The knowledge you gain here in the game is only good for the global market and therefore may render itself useless if you plan on using it locally.

Dungeon Runners Shuts Down January 1st

NcSoft’s Free MMO Dungeon Runners will shut it’s servers down on January 1st 2010.

Current subscribers to the game get quite a lot of freebies to make up for their loss.

This is the full letter to the community written by the Lead Producer and Developer of Dungeon Runers, Stephen Nichols:

Dear Dungeon Runner,

Have you ever had to give bad news to someone before? Sure you have! I’ve found that the best way to give bad news is to make a “crap sandwich” out of it. You know… you say something nice, drop the bad news bomb, then say something else nice. Sound like fun? Let’s do it then!

First, something nice! I’ve really enjoyed working on Dungeon Runners for the past three years. I’ve come to know many of you personally and have, without a doubt, had the best time in my nearly 20 year game development career working and playing with you guys! You are dedicated, passionate players that have really helped us to make Dungeon Runners what it is today. Awesome players for an awesome game! Kudos!

Now, it’s time for the bad news. Dungeon Runners just isn’t cutting the mustard. If she were a ship, she’d be taking on water. Yeah, she’s been taking on water for a long time now. Are my cryptic references too hard to decipher? The game just isn’t profitable. And, the first rule of business is to be profitable! Man, I must have missed that day in business school… but I digress.

We’ve been trying to figure out how to fix things for some time now. And, that’s where things get sticky. We’ve got some ideas that could work. But, they’re expensive to implement and pretty risky. Those two facts, coupled with the recent loss of some key developers, make achieving the success we seek pretty much out of the question.

As things stand now, we’re a three man team. Yeah, we lost two of our five man team recently. Not nearly enough manpower to get where we need to be. Rebuilding the team isn’t really an option for various reasons. So, where does that leave us? Can you guess? Yes, that’s right, we’re going to be shutting Dungeon Runners down at the end of 2009. New Year’s Eve to be exact.

Okay, now that the bad news is out of the way, let’s get some more good news to make the sandwich complete. NCsoft has worked with us on a plan to compensate Dungeon Runners players. I think we’ve come up with a nice package for all players with paid memberships as of today (9/16/2009). You’ll be getting a 30 day game time serial code and digital copies of City of Heroes Architect Edition and Guild Wars Prophecies. FREE games FTW! I know, it’s not Dungeon Runners… but it’s still frigging nice! Of course, any of you guys that need refunds for multiple-month membership purchases will be taken care of. And, as always, our helpful support staff will be available to help you with any issues you have.

Wait, there’s even more good news! While we may be going out, we’re going out in style, with a few changes to the game for the coming “End Time”. Mythic loot will drop much more frequently. We’re significantly reducing the cost of expensive King’s Coin vendors. We’re also quintupling the rate of XP gain to help you finish the game before year’s end! Finally, we’re adding a huge nuke to Townston that will blow up on New Year’s and take the game down with it. There’s more, but what fun is there in spilling all the beans? Oh, its gonna be a fun time till the end of the year! Loot finding, leveling madness. I may finally make it to level 100 myself now…

So, try not to be sad. It may be the end of Dungeon Runners, but it’s not the end of the world! I’ll still be working on the game until the very end. We can chat, reminisce and play DR until the lights go out.

See you in the game!

We wish the best of luck to the Dungeon Runner team and players!

Dungeon Runners - Servers Shut down on New Years Eve

NeoSteam Shattered Continent Interview: What To Expect

Questions by Bryan King, Onrpg writer
Answered by Jeffrey Hong, Marketing Coordinator

The Steampunk genre has always kept to the basic forms of art. However, times have changed and Atlus Online brings a steampunk game to the MMO market named Neosteam: The Shattered Continent. The game promises exciting PvP, a charming and unusual story, and extensive customization, among other things. We interviewed Jeffrey Hong to find out some more about the game!

Onrpg: Hello Jeff! Thank you for taking some of your time to answer these questions. Starting off, can you introduce our readers to the background of Neo Steam?
Hi there, Bryan! Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent is a free-to-play fantasy-steampunk based MMORPG developed by JoyImpact of Hanbitsoft and is also the first title published by Atlus Online, a digital entertainment portal.

Onrpg: Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent has a wide variety of unique races, each with their own traits and advantages. Can you give us a description of the story behind these races, and which one is your personal favorite?
Well, there are a total of six races that inhabit the world of Chrysalis. There are the Humans, Elves, Tarune, Lupine, Pom,and the  Lyell. Each race comes with their own unique racial traits that can make them more adept at certain classes. Personally, I am a fan of the cute furry Pom. It is a really unique character that is just hard not to love. Their role in the story is that the Pom in particular were very adept at crafting, and are known as the masters of technology in Chrysalis.

Onrpg: Personally speaking, Neo Steam has a wide array of amazing classes, some of which of the same type can’t really be experienced in plenty of games. Can you give us a basic intro to these classes and their varied abilities?
Initially, you can choose between four base jobs, Warrior, Mystic, Scout, and Machinist, that can later specialize into two different classes. You have your melee classes such as the Justicar and the Templar, the rouge/DPS classes such as the Warden and the Shadowreaver, the casters such as the Evoker and Animator, and the crafters such as the Tinkerer and Gadgeteer. Each has its own distinct playstyle and gives incentives for players to create many alternate characters. Each nation has its own class trees making for a total of 16 possible specializations.

Caster Class

Onrpg: What experience does the Steampunk aspect of the game introduce?
Steampunk is worked into the game thematically as well as into the gameplay mechanics. You’ll find a lot of Steampunk elements in the weapons and armor as well as the actual towns and various environments. One of the many cool Steampunk gameplay elements is the ability to ride around in Zeppelins and Steam Balloons.

Onrpg: Please, introduce the “Neo Steam” system to readers.
Neo Steam is the precious resource which is the source of contention between the two nations. Neo Steam is an energy source used in the game that powers various mechanics such as crafting and travel.  In the beginning, the world was one continent, and due to instability caused by the over-mining of the resource, a huge earthquake shattered the continent into many pieces. Neo Steam is thus carefully rationed to each citizen to prevent rapid depletion.

Onrpg: Atlus Online published an updated version of the original Neo Steam. Which aspects of the game were custom-tailored to further market the game to players of different tastes?
One of the key aspects of the game that we focused on was the localization. We retranslated the entire game and gave it a very distinct flavor and feel. Our focus was to really make the game immersive, give each character their own personality, and make the quests feel epic and involved. In addition we’ve added content not previously found in the older version as well as fixing up the bugs and other issues.

Onrpg:  What does NS:TSC do to separate itself from the typical free MMO? Give us some unique aspects.
One of the main obstacles is the level grind associated with many F2P MMOs. We took that into consideration and adjusted the experience curve to be much more forgiving to players. The genre of fantasy-steampunk is also something players don’t come across very often, if any. Additionally, we have a very active moderation staff that focuses on creating a vibrant community and friendly atmosphere for players. We also have a strong team of GMs running events, and we’re coming up with new ones all the time like Monster Mash, Prolific Pufu Problem, Jugg or Naut and more!

Riding a Pufu

Onrpg: What’s a detailed explanation of how Atlus expects to please users that do or do not buy from the game’s item shop? A regular complaint by most gamers is the fact that some gamers have “the upper hand” if they spend hard-earned money on the game.
Our Premium Item Shop was created with game balance in mind – you can’t buy things like weapons or armor that would make the game skewed towards paying players. Our focus was on creating a game that can be enjoyed by both paying and non-paying users and maintain a fair environment. The Premium Item Shop contains things such as costume items to alter your character’s appearance and also consumables such as potions and race changes.

Onrpg: In one sentence, give readers a reason why they should give Neo Steam a try.
Neo Steam combines the components of a solid MMORPG with the unique aesthetics of a fantasy Steampunk world.

Onrpg: What does the future hold for Neo Steam: The Shattered Continent?
We have plenty of content coming down the pipeline that we are excited to be releasing.

Onrpg:  Last question… Neo Steam is Atlus Online’s debut MMO, can you give readers a sneak peek of what’s coming next to the Atlus MMO Portal?
We definitely have some awesome things planned. Expect more anime and a more in-depth system for community participation.

Onrpg: Thank you for your time!
No problem!

Regnum Online Interview: Get Ready For The Launch

Questions by Rick Charbs, Onrpg writer
Answered by Nicolas Lamanna, Regnum Online Producer

An MMO with a development team built on staying closely knit with their community just can’t go wrong: “being a small but committed development team allowed us to stay in touch with the community on a regular basis” said Nicolas Lamanna, Producer for Regnum Online. Is this game’s long-lasting success the fruit of this communication? As one of the extremely rare Realm vs. Realm MMORPGS that are available for free, Regnum Online’s population in game is still booming. With activities ranging from one-man pvp hunts to castle sieging, this game is build with the PvPer in mind. This interview has some information on pass events, the game’s storyline, what Regnum really means, information on game functions, and a little more interesting pieces of information!

Regnum Online launches tomorrow (23rd of September, 2009)!!

Onrpg: What does Regnum Online mean, exactly? Where has this title been chosen from?
Regnum comes from Latin and it means “Realm”. We chose this name because it represented the essence of the game, which is three realms engaged in constant battle and as a little homage to the first game ever published in CD format here in Argentina, where one of our founders worked and it was called Regnum. Although the name is similar, it belonged to a different genre.

Onrpg: What kind of storyline does the game present to its players?
Three realms are in a on-going struggle for power. Each faction has its own historical and strategical reasons for engaging in battle but as the story unfolds through the quest lines you start discovering that there is different agenda behind the war. There are hundreds of quests and side quests with different storylines per realm and areas of the world.

Regnum Online Farm

Onrpg: How does Regnum Online live up to its slogan? (”The best MMORPG with Realm vs. Realm action available FOR FREE”)
This is in a way thanks to the unique approach Regnum has given to the Realm vs Realm genre with its open-ended and accessible on-going battles. Also, Regnum is one of the only games where great amounts of players are constantly invading enemy territories and where almost half of the population of the server is actively participating. As a reward for such big feat as completing an invasion, your realm is given the opportunity to vote from a range of rewards that may affect the outcome of future battles for a week. The tagline has been actually mentioned many times by the community before we even used it as a slogan for the game.  And also we were really careful with Premium items not breaking the PvP balance.

Onrpg: In what way do the classes differ in game play? How about the races?
The classes vary between each other greatly. Each class was designed to fulfill a role in battle so a balanced army has more chances of winning and provides versatility when it comes to strategical and tactical decisions. We have three main classes: Warrior, Mage and Archer. And 6 sub-classes, 2 per each class, that provide a great deal of customization. Even so, players of the same subclass have different specs tailored for the current situation. You could be configured for damage dealing, support, hunting or even a combination. The choice is up to the player.

Onrpg: Could you please offer us a rundown on PvP in Regnum Online?
First of all, PvP in Regnum Online is fast paced including a great variety of tactics and spells. PvP and specifically RvR is what Regnum Online is all about. Every location, race, class and spell has been designed taking PvP into account. The game begins in a safe haven, providing a smooth tutorial into the mechanics of the game. As you advance your character and set your way into the world, you’ll discover soon enough that you are in there for a reason, to defend your realm and your fellow allies! Once you set foot in the “War Zone”, which is basically a no man’s land in the center of the world, you must be careful because enemies are lurking around every corner.

This is where the real fun begins, an open-ended battlefield where you will find:
– One man hunts, ideal for solo players. If you are stealthy enough and careful, you can always catch an enemy off guard.
– Party battles, you can always team up with fellow realm members and go for a quick skirmish. This part of the world is only geographically limited, so fights are available any time if you are willing to look for one.
– Fort and Castle captures: These buildings form the basis of the Invasions feature (explained below) but even by themselves they offer an interesting alternative by defending yours and attacking/siegeing enemy ones.
– Big battles: Once an Invasion has settled in, is all about chaos and giant battles involving hundreds of players all over the world! If you want to get through the famous portal located in each realm, you will have to fight your way into enemy territory and steal their gems. It won’t be easy but it will be a lot of fun!

Regnum Online Landscape

Onrpg: Could you please briefly explain invasions?
Invasions is the ultimate RvR feature in Regnum Online. It basically allows you to enter an enemy realm and break havoc. The way this works is pretty straight forward. Each realm has two forts and one castle, once you have captured the castle and at least one of the forts, the enemy great wall (each faction has one dividing the war zone from the inner realm) will become vulnerable and all the enemies, will gain a window of opportunity to destroy it. If you manage to build an army and destroy the Great Wall, you will be able to enter the enemy inner realm and steal a sacred gem. Each realm has two gems.

Once you have obtained all 6 gems, you will be able to place them in your portal and enter a mysterious place. There, you will be granted the ability to vote a wish that will benefit you or your entire realm . Here, the will of the people will decide. One great thing about Invasions is that the reward will continuously be improved upon as we add more Wishes. This allows us to extend the basic gameplay without changing the rules. Usually, Invasions are experienced on a daily basis by hundreds of players at the same time.

Onrpg: How valuable is party play in the game? Can solo players enjoy Regnum Online equally?
The game is easily soloable, even with support classes. You just have to setup a build that fits your playing style and class. On the other hand, parties are pretty common in the game and offer several advantages to those who are willing to travel in groups. Parties also have experience bonuses but even solo players will get shared experience automatically if two or more players attack the same creature.

Onrpg: How deeply can you customize a character in Regnum Online?
Regnum offers several options when setting up your character. You can initially choose race, class, hair and hair color, facial hair and color, size and face. But the customization is also given as items in the game, every armor part and weapon changes your aspect. And even so, you can buy paint that will allow you to differentiate from other players.

Onrpg: What measures do you take to ensure a seemingly decent balance between premium item purchasing players and regular players?
This is one of the key aspects in Regnum Online. We paid attention to this common complaint on all free-to-play MMOGs and designed the premium content in a way that doesn’t give you a definite advantage in PvP and RvR. While you will certainly get an enhanced experience by getting premium content, it will be mostly related to visual customization, time saving and uniqueness. But when it comes to PvP, two players will always have to rely on their skills and the knowledge of their surroundings. There are no restrictions on spells or skills that you can get, so any player can maximize their characters and still be confident that they stand a chance in battle.

Regnum Online Angry Wolf

Onrpg: Regnum is available in Spanish, German, and English. What is the importance of having a varied community, in your opinion?
We think this is pretty big actually. We had our share of laughs and misunderstandings as we learned about subtle cultural differences. This was a double edged sword at the beginning but we adapted and now we see it as something unique to Regnum. There are people that claimed that wanted to learn new languages in order to understand what their realm fellow members were saying. There is even a fan-made comic that reflects this in a fun away (Regnum fan-made comic: http://iwconstructions.com/Regnum/).

Onrpg: What do you think makes Regnum Online so unique on the MMO market?
The game has a Western look & feel to it but also a asian approach in terms of business model. This rare blend allowed us to offer an unique experience. It also is constantly evolving and because of being from an independent developer and self-published, we can experiment more with gameplay, offering different options for those who are tired of the same old tried-and-true formula about grinding games which sole purpose is just to be more powerful so you can grind some more. While Regnum has its share of grinding, it’s just a means to an end. Which is the RvR part of the game and where the fun never ends. Last but not least, being a small but committed development team allowed us to stay in touch with the community on a regular basis. This includes not only the forums but in-game as well, since several members of our team play and enjoy the game as every other player.

Onrpg: What elements of the game appeal to you the most?
– The fact that the players are from all over the world give the game a very unique feeling to it. You will see different servers with different cultures, all with their beliefs and ways of playing.
– The way the world is designed to end up in a big war zone, makes the game really accessible for several kind of players. While at the same time, it offers safe zones for those who want a more social experience without being disturbed.
– How the Premium works in favor of the PvP aspects and not against it.
– The potential the game still has (Including the upcoming technology update), we already have so much plans that will offer even more ways to have fun

Onrpg: What would you improve in the game if you were given the opportunity? Why?
We want to offer more content in several areas that could use some more and continue to expand on the RvR concept, offering more options. We also want to appeal more to other types of players, not only those who like PvP but PvE, commerce and social interaction.

Regnum Online Pavilion

Onrpg: Now that the Regnum Online’s Second Anniversary event has ended, what have you planned for the future?
We have plans to continue offering big 1-week events for known dates, such as Halloween or Christmas. We are also thinking of doing smaller events, that last a weekend and offer discounts and special prices. In terms of event, we just began to scratch the surface of what we can do to keep the community alive.

Onrpg: Are there any planned future updates for the game? If so, what can players expect?
One thing Regnum is known for, is that updates come often. Usually once a month. This helps the game stay alive and offer players a constant influx of content.

We already have some major improvements under development:
– Graphic engine revamp, offering more performance, stability and visual options
– All player characters will be redone offering better quality and more customization options
– Invasions for low level players, get a glimpse of the best feature of the game and help your fellow realm members!
– New and improved content for most of the world areas: New monsters, items, quests
– Continued work on balance
– New gameplay features and much more!
