Wizard101 hits Five Million Players

KingsIsle Entertainment, the maker of Wizard101, is proud to announce that during its first year more than five million players from around the world have registered for the game. As part of the celebration, several decorations are being added to the game in September as well as a special surprise for all players.

“Quality family entertainment doesn’t have to be expensive,” said J. Todd Coleman, creative director of Wizard101. “The success of Wizard101 clearly shows that it is possible to produce a fun and challenging game that is both wallet-friendly and appropriate for all ages – and that it’s something people are looking for in these tough economic times.”

Congratulations Wizard101!

Wizard101 Interview: A Game for Young and Old?

Questions by Mohammed Afzal, Onrpg writer
Answered by James Nance, Senior Producer and Wizard101 Team Lead at Kingsisle

“Amazing, intense, challenging and magical” are the best ways to describe Wizard101. Kingsisle Entertainment has brought MMOs to a next level with this amazing game full of unique and incredible features. The intense turn based combat with beautiful effects, the magical classes and the colorful world are features that make Wizard101 a great game, but there is one thing that some of us are still quite unsure about; Is the game really for young and old? That’s what we are going to find out! OnRPG decided to hold an interview with James Nance, Senior Producer at Kingsisle Entertainment.

Onrpg: Could you introduce yourself, please?
I’m James Nance and I’ve been with KingsIsle for over 4 and a half years, and was the Lead Designer during development of the game.  I’m currently responsible for the overall creative vision and the management of both the development team and game service for Wizard101.

Onrpg: How did the development of such a unique game start?
It was a team effort. We – Todd Coleman (our Creative Director), Josef Hall (our Director of Technology) and I — wanted to give young fantasy fans an online entertainment option that offered the fun of massively multiplayer games, but in a way that was safe and appropriate for younger players. Honestly, Shadowbane allowed me to get my fill of gore, so I was ready for something more light-hearted. When we looked at the MMO market, there was a pretty big gap between virtual worlds made for very young players (Club Penguin, ToonTown) and the offerings for the adult market (World of Warcraft, Warhammer). Fantasy worlds like Harry Potter and Pokémon dominated the scene, so we thought why not give the tween and casual gamers a family-friendly, wizard themed game.

Wizard101 Characters

Onrpg: The game targets especially younger players. Can teenagers and adults also enjoy the game?
Definitely, funny enough, we’ve gained many adult players because they were checking out the game for their kids and became hooked on it themselves. When developing Wizard101‘s storyline and characters we hoped to achieve the “Pixar Effect” – the ability to appeal to parents and kids alike. We created the game to be a polished, light, fun, fantasy MMO experience with tongue-in-cheek sensibility. There’s a clear story-driven plot and some pop-culture humor that amuses the adults, but that kids might not even notice.

Onrpg: Wizard101 has a unique spell system. Could you tell us some more about this system?
Our spell system is turn-based, card-game combat. We actually developed and refined the original card combat system using paper cards and sitting around a table. We wanted to make sure that the system made sense and that the rules were easy to learn.

In the game, players create spell decks that are based on their chosen magic schools. Players can find, create, purchase and trade cards with each other. Because this system is turn-based and prompts you for your turn, it’s easy for people to understand at early levels. The combat is also very cinematic, so it’s engaging and fun to watch. Additionally, as you advance, your decisions become more strategic and thoughtful. You have time to think about your next move. It’s not a game that relies on hitting buttons as fast as you can.

Onrpg: Why did you put up a subscription fee if the game mostly targets younger players?
Wizard101 offers a never-ending free trial. In addition to the initial area, you can access the PVP arena and play the mini-games forever.  Other worlds are accessible through a monthly subscription or players can add new areas individually as they advance. Additionally, it’s important that parents have a say in the online communities their children are a part of and by involving money it generally brings parents into the process. Also, as discussed earlier, we’ve actually gained a good deal of players by involving parents. We feel our subscription model is family-friendly and affordable.

Onrpg: There are several magic classes in the game. Could you describe them for us?
The Ravenwood School of Magical Arts, where young Wizards train, has seven different schools of magic which are integral to the Wizard101 story line as each offers its own rhythm and philosophy. During character creation, players are asked a series of questions that determine their school of magic and the spells they’ll learn throughout the game. There are six basic schools and one that combines the powers of the six. The schools are Fire, Ice, Storm, Myth, Life, Death and Balance. The magic of Fire, Ice, and Storm come from the ancient Titans that ruled the world in the Days Before. The magic of Myth, Life, and Death comes from the power of the mind, body, and spirit of the Wizard casting them. The magic of Balance unites all these magical elements.

Ice Titan Tower

Onrpg: Are there unique events held ingame? If so, could you tell us more about them?
It’s not uncommon to see Wizard City decked with decorations for a holiday. During Halloween we had apple bobbing and unique Halloween clothing, and for Yuletide, we had holiday outfits and pet snowmen.  Also, for our one-year anniversary, we decorated Wizard City with banners, balloons and more to celebrate the milestone as well as a special gift for each Wizard as part of the festivities.  Players also hold events of their own; you can’t play too long before hearing calls of “Party in the Ice Tower!”

Onrpg: What separates Wizard101 from other MMOGs?
Wizard101 combines the fun and challenge of massively multiplayer worlds with a family-friendly environment that is safe for younger players. It’s a game the whole family can play together, but that kids can also play alone. That’s not something you can say about other MMOs that are designed with more adult sensibilities in mind. I don’t know many parents who would feel comfortable letting a pre-teen see and participate in some of the un-filtered conversations you see in other games.

Onrpg: What kind of updates can we expect in 2009?
There’s plenty to come in 2009! Look for some cool announcements about game updates soon (especially in September, around the time of the Austin Game Developers Conference!)

Onrpg:  Wizard101 has a few mini-games. What is the reason of having those?
Mini-games provide one more way for our players to stay engaged and interested in the game. We think they are lots of fun and if you have a few minutes to play, but not enough time to complete an entire quest, you can still play a few mini-games and feel like you’ve accomplished something.

Onrpg:  What is the reason for limiting the chat and character creation?
While we want players to be able to express themselves through chatting and character creation, our first priority is to keep our younger players safe within Wizard101. We think we have found a good balance between self-expression and safety. When creating their Wizards, players can choose from different outfit colors, facial features, hair colors, etc. We have a name-generating system that allows players to create names that fit with the world of the game, but prevents players from using their real names or creating names that are inappropriate.

Part of what makes Wizard101 so engaging is the ability to interact with other players. We offer multiple levels of chat that offer decreasing levels of control that can be modified to fit the changing maturity levels of players. Kids can still express themselves and make friends through chat; they just can’t reveal personal information. As players grow, Wizard101 can grow with them to allow for more self-expression and freedom.

Onrpg:  Why is there a restriction for typing numbers in the chat?
This restricts players, particularly younger ones, from exchanging personal information such as their age, address, phone number, etc. We want to do everything in our power to protect our younger players in Wizard101‘s community.

Onrpg:  Wouldn’t it make you feel lonely if the ways of communication are so limited?
The goal of the tiered chat system was to ensure that players were able to communicate with one another, but in a way that was safe for young players. Our most basic level of chat is menu-based. Players can use a multi-level system of drop-down boxes to converse. The menu-based system includes ways to greet others, ask for help on specific tasks, offer help, wish people good luck and even tell others that you are restricted to menu-chat. Rather than isolate players, it provides a safe, structured environment where kids can enjoy the game and be part of an online community.

Onrpg: Why didn’t you make separated channels for the community; One with barriers and one without?
The tiered chat system functions the same way as separated channels. The least-restricted chat option is Open chat, which is available for adults and must be validated by entering a credit card number. At this level, there is a profanity filter, but players are able to communicate freely. If two players with Open chat are conversing near others, their full conversation can only be seen by other Open chat players. Anyone with “white list” chat can only see the parts of the conversation that align with the white list of approved chat words.  And finally, menu chat players cannot see the discussion.

Duels in Wizard101

Onrpg: There is an arena which offers us PvP fights. Is the PvP (Player versus Player) similar to the PvE (Player versus Environment)?
Player vs. Player (or PvP) is a combat feature we offer in a special arena in the game. Players can compete against each other instead of worldly creatures. While similar to regular dueling, Player vs. Player dueling adds an extra level of excitement and challenge because you’re matching your skills against other players, not just a computer.  There are also unique rewards that can only be earned through PvP!

Onrpg:  The game is very casual and players can just jump into your fight and ‘steal’ your kills. Why is this possible?
Wizard101 is set up to be a cooperative game, where players are encouraged to help each other out. Unlike other games, there really is no way for another player to “steal” monsters that you’re fighting. If I’m battling a troll and you jump into the combat circle, we are both rewarded with treasure at the end of the duel. In other games, each defeated opponent offers one reward, so there’s no benefit to multiple players working together.

Onrpg:  Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Wizard101 has been the most fun project I’ve ever worked on, and I’m very proud to see it well received and enjoyed by so many people.  Thanks for listening!

Onrpg:  Thank you for your time!

Force of Arms

Force of Arms is a Mech-MMORPG with a gigantic world map: 4,000 km by 4,000km at a 1:1 scale; about 1/3rd the size of Earth! However, players are not going to be allowed to freely go anywhere on a whim. There are fuel requirements as even Fusion Engines burn fuel, so the distance available to travel is based on the fuel tanks and supply centers.

Nearly forty years have passed since the last colonial ship from Earth arrived. Faster Than Light capability had ceased to function for reasons unknown. There has been no news since that time.

Opposing factions originally agreed to end their disputes and strive for peace and colonization of the barren planet K-9WD Gamma. Peace would not last.

The main fighting unit is Mechanized Armor (abbreviated: Mech.). Large humanoid armored war machines armed with energy, kinetic and missile weapon systems.

Initially, Force of Arms will take place on the barren frontier planet called K-9WD Gamma. The planet has a frontier colonization feel to it with political instability. The planet is one of the few planets discovered to be mineral rich with a special element that provides superconductivity components to operate well into high temperatures. The end goal is for humanity to rediscover Faster-Than-Light capability, and it is of this planet that the rediscovery will occur.

At a certain point of time, Force of Arms will be expanded to include many star systems and alien races.

Champions Online Preview: Grab Your Cape

By Joshua Temblett (Dontkillmydreams), OnRPG Journalist

The Champions Online Open Beta has come and gone and now the game has just taken off, ready to fly around the world and save you from boredom.  In what is one of the most hyped up MMORPGs of 2009, many of you will be asking whether it is worth the excitement.  Luckily, I am here to help you out and provide you with this rather splendiferous look into this new super hero universe.  So put on your capes, pull your under pants up over your tights and get ready for this ultimate preview.

Unique Characters

If you’ve been following the game for a while then you undoubtedly know a lot about the creation process in Champions Online, after all it is one of the game’s main selling points and something the developers are constantly talking about.  What I will say is that you can create the avatar of your dreams, as the amount of options you can use to tweak your super hero are absolutely staggering.  Want to look like Spider Man?  Want to have the appearance of a Kung Fu Master?  Then go for it, anything is absolutely possible.

Champions Online Combat

One small problem with this is that all of these choices can make this process feel somewhat overwhelming at first, however after you’ve created your first man (or woman) in tights you’ll soon get a hand of the menu and you’ll find yourself browsing it with ease when creating a new hero.  There’s even the ability to save your customisations, so that when you do begin to create another hero you can use the template of a previous character you’ve made which makes it much quicker to jump in and get playing with your new toon.

After you’ve made your first character and entered the fantastic world of CO you’ll be greeted by a city under attack.  This first area is your tutorial for the game.  Here you’ll learn the basics such as how to move, blocking, using your powers efficiently and about the various open quests that inhabit the universe.  One of the things that hit me about this area was how cramped and unexciting it felt.  As I got further in, I found that the world felt a bit too overwhelming and I find myself lost with no real sense of direction.

Despite this towards the end of the tutorial the game flowed much more and that’s when I truly managed to enjoy myself.  I was also introduced to the “Open Quest” concept.  For those who may be unfamiliar, allow me to explain through an example.  In one part of the starting off area, there was a large rocket.  Around this rocket there were enemies and allies alike.  If you enter the region you instantly become a part of the question and are given various instructions about how to complete it.  This means that anyone can pop in at any time and help out without needing to get the quest first.  This also means that you can join the Open Quest just before it ends and still get credited with doing the quest, which was what happened to me.

After completing the Open Quest I went back to a quest giver and got my reward.  I then continued on with my quest to save Millennium City which led me into a story based instance whereby I had to face one or two bosses and help the NPC that was assisting me put the rocket (mentioned earlier) back online.

Hot Battles

Design and Gameplay

The unique style and look of the graphics add to the interactive story-telling as the use of cel-shading fleshes out many of the world’s characters.  The result is a universe that has individuality and is interesting to explore.  Everything feels perfectly crafted to create an experience that can’t be found anywhere else on the market.

The gameplay also keeps up this reputation of singularity from the genre by keeping things simple yet fun with the battle system.  You start off with two powers.  One of these powers is fairly weak and is used to fill up your energy bar.  Once your energy bar is full, or has enough power in it, you can use the second skill to unleash a more powerful attack.  It’s simplistic and it works, not only that but you quickly gain more new abilities.

Perhaps one of the most interesting of these new found skills is the ability to fly which of course you can heavily customise.  Want to burst into flames and fly through the air?  Want to teleport somewhere?  Want to have super speed?  You can have any of these travel powers and more.  I spent nearly a whole hour just trying out the different powers and deciding on which travel power I should choose, I eventually went with the hard to control, yet incredibly cool, block of ice.

Heroic Flight

After managing to get a few new powers and exploring a fresh area my preview time was up, which was rather unfortunate as I was just getting into the game.  Although Champions Online starts off slow, it quickly gains pace and becomes more and more exciting.  It’ll be interesting to see how CO evolves as we play through the final build.  I for one can’t wait to see what happens next in this new adventure.

It’s also been interesting to watch the game launch, what with the controversy that’s been surrounding it.  It turns out that on the day that Champions Online launched, a patch was released which increased various enemy stats and reduced the defence of characters.  This patch also left players who had participated in the head start (which you got from pre-ordering the game) with unwanted skill changes.  So in one patch Cryptic managed to change the game completely, which isn’t really a good idea regardless of whether it’s launch day or not.

So as I said before, it’ll be very interesting to examine the game and how it changes throughout the coming months and as always your friendly writers at Onrpg.com will be here to update you on all the details.

Hero Online Review: True Heroes, True Grind

By Jeffrey Kerkdijk (Hyarume), OnRPG Journalist

Hero online is an MMORPG, based upon the story of some Chinese writers. It is a free to play game developed by Mgame and published by Mgame.

Story

A legend tells a story of a hero “Quin Shi Huagdi”, who was known for putting an end to the age of chaos. He called himself the “Son of the Sky” and dreamed to become immortal someday, a great dream.

He was an emperor, he was so ambitious to become immortal that he sent five hundred young boys and girls to Trinity Mountain as sacrifices, along with hundreds of Taoist mystics throughout the land to ascertain the hidden secrets of immortality. Tired, Huagdi went to seek out a way to become a god, mercilessly killing everyone in his path.

As goes the way of all mortal things, Huagdi couldn’t prevent his death and the fall of his dynasty. Along with his death the glory and wealth vanished from the world. His own palace was burned down to the ground after his death.

Many years later the sun disappeared and darkness spread throughout the heavens and the earth. From the depth of this darkness twelve men, “demons”, appeared and they brought the world into chaos and reigned by means of destruction. The appearance of the demons was also the cause of the fall of many famed houses. Tae-San Pa of San-Dong, Gun-Pa of Hae-Nam, Bok-Gun, Kwang-Dong, Myo-Gang, Sa-Chun, Ok-Mun Guan, Dae-Mak, and San Suh all fell under the hands of the twelve Demons.

In the darkest days a hero suddenly appeared and brought hope to the people. Along with great skill in combat, he had a plan. He lured the twelve demons into a trap where three thousand of the hero’s best soldiers were waiting. After ten days of continuous combat, all of the twelve Demons where slain at the cost of three thousand men.

Our hero started a house, and people called him “The Great Dragon”. On a strange day “The Great Dragon” he was murdered. They discovered it was his wife’s doing. After his death it was rumored that his wife cradled his dead body, mumbling “They are back. The twelve have returned “. Chaos covered the land once again. Could it be? Could the Twelve demons have returned? If this was true and the twelve Demons had truly returned, we would all be in grave danger, unless… a new hero would arise.

Hero Online Master

Gameplay

The gameplay in Hero Online starts with the creation of your own hero. You have a few classes to choose from, and a few customization options. You start of at level 1 kyu, and every ten levels you get a dan, imagine if your level was 3dan5kyu that would be the same as level 35. Basically hero online is a big grind, there is a story behind it but only if you care to read the wall of text in the quests. There is little to do besides grinding.

At 1dan you can pick get job class, at 5dan you can get a promotion to the job class you choose at level 1dan. These give you some extra skills to grind for but in the game there really isn’t much else to do other than grinding. And even if you do find something to do besides leveling it is more confusing than fun. The game gives you the bare minimum information and presents you with weird names of items to collect, that you often wouldn’t recognize even if it is right in front of you.

At level 1dan you can also get a pet. Pets are very handy, since you can use them as mounts, as companion, extra storage or just for combat. Hunters are the only ones who have the ability to tame them; everyone else needs to buy them.

Hero Online Combat

Fortunately there also is a lot of PvP in the game which provides great diversion! There are PvP servers with their own rules such as bonus experience for your kills, but you also lose more with your death. On these servers PvP is everywhere, and Hero Online has just the job system for those who love PvP.

In Hero Online you can pick which skills you would like to be stronger by distributing skill points. This offers a variety of options for character development. The game also has stat distribution, but it is easy to mess up. In later levels this can be a lot of work to correct, or perhaps you even need a stat reset potion from the cash shop.

Graphics & Sound

Hero Online doesn’t stand out when it comes to graphics; to be honest the graphics are pretty bad. The world doesn’t have much detail; even the characters don’t have much to see. Overall the sound is good. Nothing to say about that further

Hero Online

Personal recommendation

Hero online isn’t exactly a great game, it doesn’t offer more than most of the other MMORPGs out there, but what it does have is a good PvP system. Another thing that Hero Online does best is potion spamming. I seriously dislike this in MMORPGs. It really isn’t fun to keep spamming potions to stay alive.

Hero does have some other systems such as enchanting and crafting but it isn’t even worth it half of the time, due it being too expensive or just useless. There are also movement skills in the game, like flying over buildings, and walking on water that kind of stuff. These are handy for travel and look great in the game. In fact all of the animations that the game has look great

The biggest surprise for me was that the game still has many mistranslations, that haven’t been corrected since launch. If you are someone who likes to grind and loves to PvP, only then you should check out Hero Online.

Pros:
– The combat is allright
– The animations
– Job classes
– Character development.

Cons:
– The grind.. Everything is a grind in Hero
– Potion spamming
– The graphics
– The interesting storyline that has been forgotten in the game
– The mindless boring quests.
– Character customization
– Sometimes more confusing than fun.

Product Review: Sidewinder X6 Keyboard

By Key Beneza (Dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Aside from its eye-catching red glow, the Sidewinder X6 packs a lot of features for your everyday PC gamer. With Macros, desktop control and even folder hotkeys, this mean keyboard is sure to rock your gaming experience. The first noticeable feature would be the detachable numpad, which is ideal for gamers who have a hard time reaching certain hotkeys that are programmed on the numboard. The panel can be moved on the left side of the keyboard for easy access. The Sidewinder X6 also has a bunch of macro buttons that are easily mapped through its easy-to-use customizing interface.

MS Sidewinder

If you’re not satisfied with that amount of macros then you can always plug the numpad on the left side of the keyboard for more programmable macro buttons. The running man button on the top left side of the board is used to hold down a certain button for a long period of time. It can also play a series of buttons when combined with the preset button that lets you save up to three different actions. I guess the only way they could beat you now is if they were to have the same keyboard.

The keys aren’t really that special compared to some keyboards that have LCD buttons but hey, this keyboard is still a freak of nature. The key alignment is quite troublesome especially when you’re used to the traditional layout of the keys. You might end up pressing the wrong key on certain occasions but you’ll get used to it upon continuous usage.

The keyboard also has a two dials that adjusts the backlighting and your computer’s sound volume. You can always reach for the speakers but if you’re a lazy arse like me, then you’ll probably enjoy this feature.

All in all, the Sidewinder X6 is one of the best gaming keyboards I’ve ever used. Not only does it function well, the red backlight also gives your PC that fiery appearance. Kinda works well with the sidewinder mouse.

As a part of the new reveals of the game, Funcom today also released the first ever official screenshots of the real-world MMO.

“We are very pleased with what we were able to show the press at the Penny Arcade Expo, such as the very first actual in-game footage,” says Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas.

“For the time being we will keep that exclusive to the press that was there, and we look forward to reading up on their impressions. We are also very happy about the tremendous interest “The Secret World” have received among gamers, something that really shows when looking at the tens of thousands of people that have become members of the game’s official community over the last few days.”

Last week Funcom revealed three secret societies – the Illuminati, the Dragon and the Templars – all of which play an integral role in the game. Gamers everywhere were also urged to visit the official website to take the Initiation test – a personality test that determined what secret society they were most suited to join. Afterwards, gamers had the opportunity to enroll as an initiate in that secret society and thus join the official community for «The Secret World». Membership offers several exclusive rewards, such as an initiate kit, updates on the game’s development, and the chance to win access to the future beta test of the game. The Secret World - Concrete Monster

Destiny Online: Destiny Pet Farm Preview

The pet raising system is one of Destiny Online’s most important game systems. You can catch some wild monsters and turn them into your own pets to fight for you. And now Destiny Online is  extending a new addition to this feature with a plan to bring you even more cute pets to keep you company in your in-game adventure.

Legend has it that in a wonderland of Destiny Online live a herd of precious babe pets, each performing its own duty in the group. Some produce food and equipment supplies, some practice martial arts and some even get trained into powerful mounts. It is like a fantasy factory where every member works together to live an easy, free and self-sufficient life.

This is the upcoming refreshing Pet Farm system, where your pets will be able to do much more for you other than purely training.

Now after you catch a monster, you can not only just train it but also bring it to your very own Pet Farm to have more fun. Use Snare Kits to capture different kinds of pets and assign them as Worker Pets or Trainee Pets with five elements, Water, Fire, Earth, Metal and Air. Worker Pets can produce supplies to support Trainee Pets and cultivate them into cool items. To safeguard your farm and maintain the peaceful life in there, you will need to recruit mercenary pets to establish a pet army. You can feed your pets, train your pets and even play games with your pets. With more and more pets settling in your ranch, you will find that it is growing from a small farm into a magnificent Kingdom of Pet!

You can also interact with your friends in many ways in your Pet Farm. You can visit a friend’s pet farm to help him feed his pets, or you can play a plank on your friend by stealing some products from his farm. The interaction is full of fun and excitement.

Now, let’s get to some details to help you to get a clear picture of this Pet Farm:
1.You may build your own Pet Farm as soon as you reach Level 10.

2.After you get your own farm, you can catch your Trainee Pet and see how many element points they need to eat every time.

3.Then, you can go catch pets of different elements to be your Worker Pets.

4.Worker Pets will work for you to get different elements so you can feed your Trainee Pets. Also, you have to interact with them to increase their Health and Pleasure. During the process, you have to prevent your Worker Pets’ escape.

5. The best part of Pet Farm is that this is another great way to interact with your friends in game. It is quite similar with the very popular Facebook application Happy Farm. You can either help them or play a plank on them. And also, you can win the title of “Most Popular Guy/Gal” if your farm is the most visited Pet Farm.

If you do everything correctly, your Trainee Pets will be cultivated into glittering fluorescent mounts and even transformed into beautiful outfits.

Pet Farm as one of the features of Destiny Online’s second expansion pack will be out in mid September.

“No pain no gain?” In Destiny Pet Farm, this should be rephrased as “No pain? no! Gain? Yes!”
