RoM Goes Football Crazy

RoM Goes Football Crazy

Even Runes of Magic has been struck down with football fever.

Runes of Magic - World Cup Special - Represent!

Football fans on the European servers of Runes of Magic can cheer on the boys from their national teams throughout the World Cup from the 10th of June 2010 at 17:00 until the final day of the tournament on the 11th of July at 23.59. Even if our players can’t be in South Africa they can at least be there in spirit through the world of Taborea!

Players can buy national football shirts and flags in a special item Fan-Shop and in the Phirius Token Shop to dress their characters and decorate houses.

Runes of Magic - World Cup Special - Who will become the champion

Twenty-four hours before the group stage begins Frogster will introduce a special diamond promotion for all European players. During this time players will be able to get hold of an extra load of in-game currency depending on the result of the game. The more a participating player’s national team gets one past the other goalie, the more diamonds the player will receive. Whether its victory, defeat or draw, the player will still come out a champion.

The more goals scored by the country whose server the participating player plays on, the more diamonds they receive.

Enjoy!

TLBB Europe Interview: Going Full Steam Ahead

TLBB Europe Interview: Going Full Steam Ahead
Questions by: Vincent Haoson
Answered by: Michael Doroszuk (Community Manager)

Tian Long Ba Bu has just gone Open Beta and things seem to be going full steam ahead for the game. Wehad an opportunity to talk to the people at Changyou and here’s what they have to say about the game’s current status.

OnRPG: The game has just finished your Limited Open Beta, how has the initial reaction of the players been  during this stage?

We’re really pleased with the reactions so far. Our Limited Open Beta came just after our CBT which was really positive for us in terms of player numbers and feedback. The community has grown at a steady pace and we’ve seen our PCU numbers rise massively here in Europe.

TLBB Training

OnRPG: Why did you decide to go with a Limited Open Beta Rather than a full blown OBT like most games?

Our OBT was the climax of a campaign we’d been working on beforehand which included the build-up of the LOB. The Limited Open Beta allowed us to offer players who were involved from the CBT limited access to the game along with exclusive event prizes both inside the game and outside of it. This proved very successful for us, the existing players and the newer players who wanted to find out more about TLBB.

OnRPG: The normal practice in importing games (especially from east to west) is that the title gets an overhaul. Why did you decide to stick with Tian Long Ba Bu?

In China, the book this game was based on is called Ti?n Lóng B? Bù- Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils – a famous martial arts novel written by a well-respected writer called Louis Cha. The book later spawned into several movies and television series and is a well-known story amongst Chinese communities. We didn’t want to shy away from the books authenticity and so decided to keep the name.

OnRPG: What sets TLBB apart from the rest of the martial arts themed games out there?

TLBB has a very loyal following. Not only are players enticed by the storyline, but it represents their journey of discovery among Chinese culture which is very accurately portrayed in this MMO. As a F2P game with key features such as more than 70 mounts and 100 pets, there are always in-game events taking place to keep players active such as the ‘World Competition’, ‘Chess Challenge’ and ‘Lucky Bingo’ to name just a few. Another key feature of TLBB is that the instances ‘scale’ themselves to the characters level at the time of battle – which allows players to fight bosses at the appropriate level.

OnRPG: What do you think is the game’s defining feature that will make players say this is the game for them?

One of the great things about TLBB is that it’s a genuine Chinese MMO that has a beautifully rendered scenery and awesome game play. The 9 unique classes that players have to choose from prove popular among players both here in Europe and in China. The community amongst the game is fantastic, the ‘scaled instances’ are very unique and we have a number of innovative in-game events and festival events taking place all year round. All these elements combine to help make it a popular game.

TLBB snow

OnRPG: Can you tell us which of the game features you are looking forward to releasing? Why?

The game has gone through a huge amount of testing before it was released here in Europe and has gone through a smooth transition here. A main feature of TLBB is that we installed a SkyBox giving players access to the entire scenery in the game – something that never used to be there. The European version of the game was the first to have this installed. Having successfully released the game here in Europe we are now looking forward to a number of top titles to come from China as they’ve done well there with the players. There will be localization plans in place for the future of these games too.

OnRPG: One of the issues when importing games from east to west is the culture western players have to understand when playing eastern-themed MMOs. Have there been any problems with TLBB and introducing it to the western market?

This isn’t actually a problem we’ve encountered. The European communities have been open to the game and really like the way it’s portrayed in our MMO. The fact that the game delivers complete playability for our users is the main thing for us. As our American counterparts found out, the game is very much liked by the western communities. Here in Europe (although a different market to the US) we’re finding the user numbers increasing on a daily basis and so thankfully this hasn’t been an issue for ChangYou in this part of the world.

OnRPG: TLBB has a wide library of skills players can use aside from the combat skills. How important are they in the TLBB experience? Will everyone have access to the skills or are they exclusive for certain classes?

The great thing about TLBB is that players have the option of choosing the class/skill that suits them best. After a certain level, players are given the option to learn their chosen class. There are nine classes in total – Assassin, Beggars Alliance, Lotus Order, Minstrel, Pyromancer, Royalty, Shaolin, Taoist and Voodoo. The game is highly focused around the classes and is a huge part of the players’ gaming experience. The skills they can learn along the way will help develop their characters and of course excel in the martial arts world.

OnRPG: TLBB also has the gathering skill as an added skill feature. How important are the gathering skills for players in TLBB?

This is actually another one of the cool features of the game, players can harvest crops, learn to fish and mine and serves as an added incentive in TLBB. If players want to explore, there’s always something to do other than battle or complete quests. These gathering skills come in handy when players want to make their own weapons, trade with other players and improve their knowledge of TLBB. It’s an important detail of this game.

OnRPG: Can you elaborate on the double experience points system in TLBB?

Each week players are given 5 hours worth of double XP, which can be turned on and off as they wish. In each of the three major cities (Da Li, Luo Yang and Su Zhou), there is an NPC marked as ‘Efficiency’ on the map, speaking to this NPC allows the user to start and stop their double XP time.

There are also double XP balls that players can acquire, which give them an additional hour of XP time. Double XP in TLBB is best used when grouping with other players to do a raid or event (such as the Chess Challenge).

OnRPG: You guys have mentioned that getting married in TLBB entitles players to a couple specific skills. Can you give us an idea of what kind of skills players can get?

When a couple get married, they can then learn a few skills which they can use with their spouse when questing, these include a healing skill for HP, a healing skill for both HP and MP, a skill that adds stamina increasing the couples strength and a teleportation skill which will instantly move a player to their spouse in the same scene. All these skills are lost if the couple ever decide to get a divorce!

OnRPG: Can you elaborate on the Wealth Card system that’s in place in TLBB? Can players get more than one wealth card? Is it purchasable in the item mall?

The wealth card code is a reward we give to the players for various things, currently the only way to get a wealth card code is by activating a security e-mail address in the account management. When doing so players are automatically sent a code to their email. In the past we’ve given away wealth codes via advertising campaigns and events.

TLBB Mounts

A character will only need one wealth code, once a player gets the code, all they need to do is to speak to an NPC in TLBB and then again at set levels, where they will receive rewards.

OnRPG: What are the things in store for players during the OBT?

We have a lot in store for the Open Beta, as well as our yearly festival events – please see link on Onrpg (linked to the Festival Events release I sent through) – our community team regularly offer in-game prizes and incentives for forum users and registered players. Our forum has seen a lot more activity and players are sharing more views, opinions and tips on a daily basis than ever. Our Facebook and Twitter pages have also been busy recently so we will be updating them with the most recent news and information. Hopefully we will be looking to localize the game in Europe as well as an expansion pack later on down the line for TLBB.

OnRPG: What are the events in store for players in the months ahead?

With our Open Beta now underway, we have some exciting times ahead of us. The ChangYou (EU) team is growing as well as the number of registered users in TLBB. We will be looking to launch an expansion pack as well as a variety of events both inside and outside of the game. In the meantime, players can sign up for the game and receive all the latest updates from the newsletters, this way they won’t miss out on anything!

OnRPG: Thank you for your time!

Dungeon Fighter Online: Official Launch Interview

Dungeon Fighter Online: Official Launch Interview
Questions by Michael Sagoe (mikedot), OnRPG Journalist
Answered by Luis Reyes, Associate Producer for Dungeon Fighter Online

On June 9th 2010, Dungeon Fighter Online will be going “official”. Well, that is to say, it will be going into official service. For those who haven’t heard of Dungeon Fighter Online before, it’s a massive multiplayer online hack n’ slash/beat ’em up in the resemblance of classic arcade titles such as Final Fight, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and D&D: Shadow over Mystara. With this upcoming launch, you can expect a load of new features that will excite both DFO veterans and newcomers alike.

As a DFO fan myself, I was more than eager to take this interview, so I spoke with a representative over at Nexon US to get scoop on the official launch!

OnRPG: Hello! First off, I’d just like to say congratulations on your official launch for DFO! How do you and your team at Nexon feel about all this?

It’s a big moment for our team. Dungeon Fighter Online is one of the most popular games in the world and now we’re officially bringing all of its fighting action excitement to North American gamers. There is something in DFO for every type of gamer: Anyone who has ever played an arcade fighting game is going to flip out about how cool the combat is, pummeling through dungeons until you get to the boss monster-super classic; RPG fans are going to love choosing a class, leveling up, creating a skill build, equipping the right type of weapons and armor to compliment their unique brand of monster bashing; and PvP players are going to love how many different ways there are to beat up on their friends and strangers alike.

Machinist Gaelbog
Machinist Gaelbog Fight

OnRPG: Alright, well let’s jump right into the good stuff: What can players expect from the official launch of DFO?

The biggest piece of news is our launch of the Female Gunner, the sixth available character class. She has a lot of the same killer skills as her Male counterpart, but with a few new surprises, not the least of which being that she’s faster. We also have three new sub-class Awakenings open to high-level players; the Slayer’s Soul Reaper, the Fighter’s Hellcat and the Gunner’s Machinist. And for the hardcore player that absolutely needs monsters as hard as freaking possible, the Hell Mode will, hands down, kick ass. But if you can get through it, there are some amazing rewards, like Epic Items, the most powerful weapons and armor introduced into the game so far, twelve times more powerful than the typical Dungeon Fighting gear.  Now, because we know that Dungeon Fighter is a lot more fun when playing with your friends, with our official launch we are expanding the old beta size of the guilds by doubling the guild level cap to 10 and cranking up the membership limit from 50 to 300. Of course, we will be throwing a whole slate of events for the launch.

OnRPG: So now dungeons include “Hell Mode”. How much harder will it be compared to a King’s Road dungeon run? (I can only imagine, since King’s Road is already pretty darn hard!)

Pretty darn hard times ten. There are several stages to even getting into the Hell Mode in the first place. You have to go through a quest series to obtain a Quelling Stone, then you have to find the Seal Gate in the regular dungeon (the harder the mode, the more likely you will find it), then you have to break the seal and let the evil minions out. And they just keep coming at you, with attacks you have never even dreamed of in your worst nightmares. You can only use three Life Tokens as well, so you better haul cases and cases of health potions in with you.

OnRPG: So what makes the female gunners different from male gunners?

Do I honestly have to explain the difference between boys and girls here? It’s the size of their guns. I’ll let you decide whose is bigger. A lot of their skills are the same, the common ones: Gatling Gun, Flamethrower, etc. But there are some specific skill differences. She has the Marilyn Rose instead of the Male Gunner’s Jack Spike, Topspin Kick instead of the Windmill, and the ever popular Spriggan instead of the Punisher. She’s also faster, but sometimes does less damage because of it. Though she too comes from Empyrean, she has an entirely different back story. When you create a Female Gunner you’ll be able to read her intro comic. She starts locked in a prison cell, and you won’t believe what she does to escape.

Female Gunner
Female Gunner

OnRPG: Will there be any new areas or dungeons for our DFO players to visit during the official launch?

For the official launch, no. We got the Female Gunner, Hell Mode, new Awakenings, Guild expansion, optimized connection updates, a whole host of events. This is a big update. But we are following this up throughout the summer with some pretty heavy duty additions that will make long time DFO fans very happy, and blow the minds of brand new fans.

OnRPG: What about PvP? Will there be any new modes or arenas for DFO players to battle in?

Already we have One-on-One Play, Team Play for up to four vs. four, Elimination in which your team lines up against another and you step in when the teammate in front of you falls, and then an all out Brawl mode where up to eight plays can just tear into each other until one is left standing. So as far as modes are concerned, I think we got the basics covered. There might be new modes in the future, but for now, we feel players are really digging the arena. As for new PvP maps, these are very likely on the horizon, but we want to get a lot more content out first.

OnRPG: During the testing period, a public test server was opened. Will the test server remain active after the official launch or will it be removed?

The idea for the Public Test Server was to open it periodically to a select group of players when we have a lot of really cool new content to test. The more eyes the better. But we also want player feedback so that we can shape new content for the better. We listen to our fans all the time, reading the forums, offering things like the PTS, throwing out polls. We want to make the best game for our players that we possibly can.

OnRPG: I noticed that your team at Nexon decided to host a skill reset event. What convinced you guys to give them out for free?

First, we wanted to offer players who have committed time and energy to their characters something truly valuable. We’re giving away skill resets, which normally sell for NX 25,000 (and if you spend some time with the game, you really will get a sense about how valuable these things are), to all characters who, on June 9th are at level 30. By level 30 you really start getting a feeling for minor changes you’d like to see in your skill build that will mean the difference between knocking a boss monster down in one run and having to drop Life Tokens to take him out. We’re hoping that players are going to support the game in the future by buying skill resets. Now, we aren’t leaving Female Gunners out of this. We have a separate event for them. We want to encourage players to start a Female Gunner on June 9th and level her up fast, because on June 30th, we will be giving all Female Gunners who have reached level 30 a free skill reset.

OnRPG: Now I’m going to ask something that I’m pretty sure is on the minds of every diehard Dungeon Fighter Online fan (or Dungeon & Fighter fan or Arad Senki fan): When are priests going to get their time to shine? The player run shops are nice, but wouldn’t it be nicer if players could auction their items, instead? PvP makes for decent endgame content, but wouldn’t it be better if players could go to war with each other or battle monsters in some crazy old towers instead? Come on, spill it!

Dude, everything you have spoken will come to pass. It’s as if you have augured the path of DFO. I can’t give you a lot of details now, but diehard DFO fans will have plenty to celebrate as we move into the fall. The auction house, the priest redesign, tower battles, and much, much more.

Soul Reaper Dungeon Fighter
Soul Reaper

OnRPG: Well if you can’t say for this interview, could you at least drop us a hint as to when we might be getting those features? *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

Agh, how much of a hint can I possibly give. Just rest assured that Dungeon Fighter Online aims to be every bit as robust and exciting as the Asian incarnations of the game.

OnRPG: Now here’s something else about DFO’s current state that I’d like to ask: Bots. Gold Farmers. They’ve been running rampant all over the world of Arad for quite some time. Is your team at Nexon taking any precautious to getting rid of them once and for all?

We are taking severe action against hackers and gold farmers. We take the issue very seriously. We have set up new security systems, some of which you might notice when we launch on June 9th. We have been actively going after users who exploit the game, both technologically and litigiously. We have been so aggressive about this that we have driven up the price of gold being sold on third party sites. Automatic bans, game blockers, legal action, diligent responses to reported situations by our internal investigations team-all have proven very effective. But there is one thing our players can do to really help us make DFO a safe and friendly environment for all-don’t purchase gold from gold farming sites.

OnRPG: What about lag and latency issues? Have these issues been resolved before launch?

Much of the lag issue we are facing is due directly to difference in the internet infrastructure between the US and Korea. And, yes, we have made tremendous progress toward closing the gap. We are also adding to the service several ways for players to optimize their game as well. Dungeon Fighter Online runs on a peer-to-peer network, meaning that the stronger your connection with fellow players, the less network issues you will experience.  We’ve designated half of our servers for the Western side of the US and Canada, and the other half for the Eastern side. To encourage players to use the server that corresponds to their region, we are offering a 5% EXP bump. This empowers our players with the ability to find their most lag-free game.

OnRPG: Another question that I’d like to ask on behalf of all the hardcore DFO, D&F and Arad Senki fans: Does your team at Nexon have any intentions of having DFO catch up to its foreign counterparts?

Of course. For all the reasons we mentioned above, we can’t do this all at once. Dungeon Fighter is a unique and highly complex game. By building it in stages, we ensure the quality of the game for everyone. We’d also like to emphasize that DFO is its own service. We are drawing from  the catalogue of features and content that already exists, but we are creating a new experience, in the order we are releasing content, the speed at which we are doing it, and even in how we are developing original content for the game, such as a new NPC that was recently voted on by our fans. Above all, we are offering a service of the highest quality and have shaped our development and release schedule to ensure that.

OnRPG: Here’s a personal question I’d like to ask: The timed selectable avatars. It’s finally nice to be able to look you want, but is there any chance of there being permanent selectable avatars?

Just wait for the launch.

OnRPG: So is there anything else you’d like to add?

Just that we thank all of the players who have so far made DFO such a great success, and we welcome everyone to download the game and player for free today by visiting http://dungeonfighter.nexon.net!

OnRPG: Well thank you for your time! It has been a pleasure doing this interview with you and I can’t wait for the official launch! In fact, I’m going to jump back into DFO and start working on my Blade Master, again!

WWII Warfare Review: World War In Your Browser

WWII Warfare Review: World War In Your Browser
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

WWII Warfare as you may have guessed, is a Massively Multiplayer Online Web Browser Game set on the historical background of World War II (well duh!). Much like other Web Browser games, you’ll be training soldiers, battling across enemy lines and boosting your options as you progress further in the game. One of the best reasons to play a browser game is their ability to not take up space in your hard drive. The sheer beauty of it is the fact that you only need a working Internet connection and a web browser to play the game. You need not worry about system requirements either, for these types of games don’t really demand much from your system.

A World War II themed game? Sounds interesting. Aside from the fact that War makes everything a bit more interesting, the game does have a certain depth, which makes it really fun to play. Much like client-side MMOs, browser-based games are no different when it comes to addiction factor. Its simplicity through gameplay and graphic interface really doesn’t make it inferior to application games; you’ll be surprised at how many people actually play these types of games. Let’s dive in that bunker and see what makes this game special shall we?

WWII Overview
Strategy Overview

Get up soldier! It’s time to get moving! Now move! MOVE! MOVE!!!

You’ll be prompted to choose your faction, pic, and character name upon starting the game. Know that Axis and Allies aren’t that much different from each other and you’re basically going to have the same optionsonce the game starts. It’s pretty much like the Blue team Red team charades, the only difference each faction holds over the other are their names. The game is actually nice enough to give you a step-by-step Quest/Mission upon starting the game. This makes it easier for a player to get used to the basics, which allows them to function better upon leaving the newbie nest. For me newbie tutorials are one of the biggest factors in each game. A small tutorial would suffice— really, just as long as it doesn’t leave you in the dark like other games (really wish I could mention some <_<). In this game, the newbie tutorials are good and even give rewards when finishing the given tasks. Perhaps being a newbie isn’t so bad after all.

Suppressing fire! Load up those cannons! Snipers in position!

Attacking is one of the key factors in this game, and yes it won’t take a genius to figure that out as this is WAR after all. The combat phase revolves on a turn-based system that uses a unit’s range to distinguish when and what turn these units are able to attack. The units with the highest range level are the first ones to attack. It may seem a bit imbalanced at first but know that some units tend to hit harder with the handicap of not being able to fire first. You need to carefully plan your offense for strategy and layout plays a big role in combat. If you feel like some of your soldiers are no longer fit to fight, you can take them to the medical center for treatment. Remember, a dead soldier is a useless one so always keep track of your soldiers.

Build to the top

Much like your regular RTS games (Real Time Strategy), buildings play a huge role in the game. One main factor to consider is the population increase brought by buildings, much like the farm/pylon structures in other RTSs. If you want more soldiers, build more structures. Players can unlock new features and more options just by building their structures across the map. Another similarity would also be that the buildings have requirements other than simply having the resources for it. Your structures may give you the advantage you need to overcome your opponents, so don’t hold back when given the option. Buildings can be placed around the map like in most strategy games. Quite impressive as the interface actually let you see your buildings rather than indicate that you just own one.

WWII Map

Two heads are better than one

The game lets players team up with each other in order to face insurmountable odds. It’s not really something new as THIS IS still considered as a Massively Multiplayer Online game but hey! Awesome feature for a browser game!

Item mall

Yes, the game does have an item mall where players can buy things with real money to give them the advantage in almost any battle. There’s a VIP membership that gives you more experience as well as rushing all of your unit structures. You can also buy stuff that increases the stats of your soldiers, which probably doesn’t seem right for those who are enjoying the game for free. Well, it’s a war anyway and GREENS are the only way to survive LOL.

The graphics

Excellent! The in game interface is well made. The site is designed to perfection and almost everything is in order. The map can be moved and scrolled much like an application game, which is rare for most browser games. The elements do look good, definitely one of the best ones I’ve ever seen.

The verdict

The game is very simple but quite complex in a way. Strategies are mostly simplified as you would likely be experimenting on which units to bring and how many of each you would want in your squad. It’s more like a tamed version of your traditional RTS game, but that doesn’t stop it from being played competitively. You can really do a lot of stuff in this game when it comes to planning your attack and defense. To sum it all up, it’s a browser game unlike any other. Definitely a must play for all browser game fans.

The good:
– Nice system
– Item mall
– Awesome visuals
– Real time strategy browser game = good idea
– Missions and newbie tutorials reward well.

The bad:
– Gets old after some time
– Item mall?
– Shop items make subscription imbalance really bad.

Runes of Magic Introduces New Pet System

Runes of Magic Introduces New Pet System

Frogster are pleased to announce that the next expansion to the third chapter of Runes of Magic due in late June  will bring with it a selection of new features to Chapter III – The Elder Kingdoms. The Update “Warnorken Castle” integrates, amongst others, over 100 virtual pets with a range of new functions.

Runes of Magic - New Pet System

Players will be able to access the new pets after completing a specific quest where they can receive pet eggs after defeating an NPC opponent. Once players have summoned their useful companions a wide range of skills will be made available to them. The pets can be managed, cared for, and even combined together using an extensive menu. These pets can also be allocated various attributes such as experience, talent and loyalty which directly have various effects on players’ characters. For instance, the loyalty value of a pet will directly determine the probability of it attacking an opponent. The more trained and  content a pet is, the more strongly it will support its master in battle or in producing crafting materials.

Players can also benefit from effective buffs during combat depending on their pets’ attributes. To begin with players will be able to own up to six pets and will be able to summon one of them at any one time. Two extra slots will be activated in the future.
