Uncharted Waters Online Interview: Who Needs A Compass?

Uncharted Waters Online Interview: Who Needs A Compass?
Questions by Jonathan (Ardua) Doyle, OnRPG Journalist
Answered by Tomokazu Takeda (Main Producer of Development Division)

KOEI has set sail for European shores with its popular and well established Uncharted Waters Online. No compass is needed to get the juicy details, let OnRPG guide you through the dangerous and exciting uncharted waters that lay ahead.

Uncharted Waters Online

OnRPG: Hi there and thank you for talking to myself and OnRPG.com about Uncharted Waters Online. Could you tell us a little about what you do for the game/company?
Tomokazu: Koei Tecmo Games, Inc. was established in April of this year through the business merger of Koei Co., Ltd. and Tecmo, Inc. We are currently working on several online games, one of which is “Uncharted Waters Online”. In this game set in the world of the 16th century, the player becomes a ship’s captain and sails around the world. It is operated in four regions, namely Japan, S. Korea, China, and Taiwan, and is enjoyed by many people.

OnRPG: Uncharted Waters has been around for a few years now and is finally reaching shores over here in Europe and North America. What prompted the move into a new market?
Tomokazu: We first considered Asia to be the main target of this content, but as it has become popular and achieved a pretty good outcome in many places, we have taken into account the service all over the world. CJI chose this game to expand their business around the world, which helped create an opportunity for us at last.

UWO

OnRPG: There are many games out there that attempt to make the jump to consoles and sometimes suffer for it. Uncharted Waters is available however on PlayStation. Has the console port benefitted the game?
Tomokazu: When all is said and done, the customer range has widened. We believe the best advantage is that customers who would not have visited our service, if there had been only in service for PC, now get to enjoy our service.

OnRPG: Trading, conquest, exploration. It seems all bases are covered in player types. Do the other avenues mean that players can be their own trading company or is there an emphasis on combat?
Tomokazu: If you are a merchant, you can invent a large sum of money and obtain support all over the world and thus expand your sphere of influence. If you are an adventurer, you can make discoveries and find treasures all over the world. If you are a soldier, you can obstruct other countries’ trade as a pirate, or conversely, you can win fame by cracking down on hostile countries.

OnRPG: Speaking of piratical influences, do you foresee many players recreating their favorite pirate movies in Uncharted Waters?
Tomokazu: Yes, I do. I believe that it is possible for enough to be done.

UWO

OnRPG: As I understand it the game is based in the historical Age of Exploration, though a romantic and fictional version of it. Do amateur historians have much to look forward to in the settings presented?
Tomokazu: I think so. Some fiction and fantasy are included, but history lovers can enjoy it because there are a lot of quests whose theme is historical fact.

OnRPG: How is ship to ship combat handled in the game? Is it an RPG basis or do viable nautical tactics such as Crossing the T come into play?
Tomokazu: Positioning and collaboration among each fleet are very important in that the battle is being waged in real time. The decisive factor will be the player’s skill.

OnRPG: Where there’s a Navy, there’s a war! Will players have large scale naval engagements to look forward to?
Tomokazu: A great battle for national prestige is a major event that brings together more than a thousand ships. It will be a great place for a soldier to try out the fruits of his daily training.

UWO

OnRPG: Ships and Trade, a match made in heaven. Naturally I have to ask how the economy in these murky waters will stand up to pirate influences.
Tomokazu: The economic system is not designed unalterable. We emphasize the fact that every player can enjoy stable trading play to some extent. The market prices of trade goods are directly affected by players, but the economy is not totally concluded by the players. They are also controlled by the NPC algorithm. If time pass even if the prices of trading goods are changed by the players’ actions, the mechanism where rebound is processed to some extent by NPC trading is adopted, so the economy cannot be collapsed by players’ actions only.

OnRPG: Getting around in the Old World took some time. How far flung are the various cities players can lay claim to? Are the furthest reaches of the world hours away?
Tomokazu: The extent of their country’s influence on towns will be changed by the change in friendly relationship between their country and the town, not by players insisting on their proprietary rights. To get to the area farthest from Europe will take several hours. Of course, if you can get a better ship in terms of performance after having performed well and advanced in the game, I think the time taken will get shorter.

OnRPG: Not everything in life is plain sailing. Are there weather effects out there in Uncharted Waters that players should be wary of?
Tomokazu: The most alarming thing is a storm, but there could be lots of other problems.

UWO

OnRPG: Towns, Cities, ships. Players have many options on places to go. Certainly I’ve seen your gorgeous vessels locked in combat, but are there also boarding actions to be had or will players only swings swords on land?
Tomokazu: It has not yet been implemented in the current version, but combat on the ship will be allowed in the future.

OnRPG: If there was one spot in the world you’ve created that you think a new player should see, where would you suggest?
Tomokazu: First, I recommend you try to reach India, which sailors dreamed of then.

uWO

OnRPG: While designers strive for balance in all things, the World Cup shows that competition is alive. Any chance that the Netherlands will give the Spanish a bit of a tough time here?
Tomokazu: Spain was a powerful nation then, so I think it is very difficult to do so. However, I think it could be achieved through the effort and unity of the users belonging to the Dutch.

OnRPG: With three expansions under the belt in other markets, aren’t the maps completed in Uncharted Waters Online?
Tomokazu: No, they aren’t. Ocean areas have been left which have not been yet published.

Guardians of Graxia

Guardians of Graxia is being released first as a solo game with potential additional releases later. Guardians of Graxia takes on the form of a card-based board game set in a floating island environment high in the sky of the Graxia world. Releasing with four powerful Guardians that will guide your armies into battle, charge onto the battlefield by laying out your forces strategically. Gameplay advances in turns by selecting new unit and spell cards to place and move on the tiled map surface. Ultimate victory is achieved by completing any of the numerous skirmishes, or by discovering the secrets of the Guardians in the game’s initial campaign!

X Machine Online Review: An Entertaining Battle Royale

X Machine Online Review: An Entertaining Battle Royale
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

X Machine Online (or Robogod Fighter Online in other countries) is a semi-side scrolling MMO beat ’em up game that mixes the elements of button inputs from various fighting games with the traditional dungeon crawler. Although the side-scrolling concept has been pursued by various games like Dragonica Online, X Machine also has its own set of unique features to offer, making it shine along with its game play predecessors. The game is completely story based and provides a long series of story missions, which must be satisfied, for players to FINISH the game. This system was used by games like Guild Wars, but what makes X Machine different from the rest? Let’s find out…

Please Select Your Character!

Unlike other MMOs, X Machine let players pick between different characters who are involved in the X Machine storyline. Each character has his or her unique set of skills, which can be upgraded and leveled as you progress in the game.

Select Char
Select a Character

The other characters are still under development but can be acquired through the item mall once released. You can also do it the hard way by unlocking them through progress, but why bother waiting for something when you can get it right away? Reports also state that there will be some events wherein you can acquire these individuals through the giant slot machine located in the heart of the city (nothing better than free stuff).

Continuous Updates

One thing to be noted about X Machine Online is that players can actually finish the entire game. The system is similar to GuildWars, which leaves players at the mercy of helping newbies and nonstop PVP once done with the story mode. It would’ve been dull if that were the case, but the game promises to provide continuous expansions, catering more quests and story missions for players to enjoy. It’s not really a big issue as missions are not really that easy to begin with and may even take some time to finish. Some of the dungeons can be soloed but note that harder modes mean better gear ;).

Questing – The Power of Instancing

Questing in the game is completely instanced, eradicating the possibilities of killing stealing and other forms of nuisance. It’s a great system since it allows players to concentrate more on the game; however, it’s also a bit sad as you’ll probably miss the persistent world once in a while.

Note: some of the missions also carry a time limit, which is good since nothing is more immersing than the feeling of urgency.

Customize Pet
Get Your Own Pets

Bring Out The Pets

Perhaps one of the best features X Machines has to offer is its awesome pet system. Owning pets is one thing, but allowing players to actually customize and gear up their pets is a rare feature for MMOs to possess. Some pets can also be mounted and carry a unique set of skills that can aid their masters in combat. There are tons of pets in the game so enjoy collecting them :).

Cameo?

What really surprised me about the game are the aesthetic helmets. These are helmets that provide extra style without the need for binding or gear removal. The helmets were actually taken from various anime characters, so don’t be surprised if you see Naruto or Kakashi strolling around. Need more mech in your MMO life? Grab a Gundam headgear! It’s a good thing they managed to put in some features that are dead brainless but enjoyable for players. In most MMOs, players must remove a part of their gear to wear stylish stuff. It’s good to see that X Machine is not about to make the same mistake.

X Machines Cameo
Cameo

Cut-scenes

Aside from the interactive storyline and immersing adventures, the game also contains cut scenes that present as you progress in the game. What makes this game different from the rest is its ability to present the awesome storyline without having its players brush through a bunch of words like a digital book; instead, the game caters a series of awesome cut scenes, making it more satisfying for players who have progressed far.

Battle Royale

Since when has being the best been this good? Introducing X Machine’s rendition of the Royal Rumble! One thing that should be noted is that the winner of these events will KEEP getting bonus stats until that player loses his/her title. This game mode revolves around the traditional frag system, which crowns the player with the highest kill score— champion. 50 players, one thing… are you ready?

Story Mode

Graphics And Sounds

X Machines is about epic fights mixed with rock music. The graphics aren’t really that new and provide less texture, but it does make the best of its outdated elements. The lighting effects are just awesome, with cell-shaded anime models that execute different moves that are sure to satisfy fighting game enthusiasts everywhere. The music is absolutely awesome with a set of guitar riffs similar to games like MegamanX and Guilty Gear; however, the in game tunes lack variety. This means you’ll be hearing the same neo-classical play list over and over again. It’s not really that much of a problem since you can just turn on your media player.

Verdict

The game is pretty solid in my opinion. Awesome music, extremely fun game play, what more could you ask for? The best part about the game is its storytelling feature, which presents itself in various formats like quests and cut scenes. The game’s PVP mode is excellent, mixing the traditional MMO game play with flashy fighting game elements, creating a rumble of epic proportions. The game does need a few graphical tweaks and extra soundtracks but heck, at least this game has substance. Highly recommended! Go play it!

Pros:
– Instances
– PVP
– Cut-scenes
– Story Modes
– Tons of Characters

Cons:
– You’ll miss the persistent territories
– Graphics are outdated
– Lacks music
– A bit buggy.

Why MMOs lack immersion

Why MMOs lack immersion
By Michael Sagoe (mikedot), OnRPG Journalist

When was the last time you felt like you were living in the world of the MMO you played? Or the last time you felt like you were one with your virtual character? Chances are, you probably haven’t felt that feeling in a long time. For me, I haven’t felt immersed in an MMO since I was a kid. Maybe it was because my sense of childhood wonder helped fill the gap of being connected to the game world, but whatever the case, many MMOs just don’t seem to have that spark. Many MMOs today lack immersion and while some of the issues are a bit more apparent than others, here are some of the reasons that have the most impact:

User Interfaces

Not a lot of MMOs have this issue, but the ones that do can break the experience a bit. Like WoW’s custom UI feature: The more the UI fills the screen, the more it detracts from the actual gameplay, thus taking immersion out of the experience. And then there’s hotkeys and hot-bars. Sure, they might be the most efficient solution to control schemes in MMOs nowadays, but come on, we’re in the year 2010 and we’ve been using the same setup for years now. If it were up to me, I’d say that MMOs should have the smallest, most compact UI possible so player won’t be overly distracted with them.

Lack Immersion
Too much UI customization can be a bad thing.

Lack of penalties for dying

Now I know that this kind of thing would be almost impossible to include in most MMOs, but the lack of penalties for dying removes any real tension from battling out in the game world. One MMORPG, however, went into an interesting direction about death in an MMO. Shaiya Online was an MMORPG that contained a special game feature for anyone that wished to take the challenge through Ultimate mode. The reward for playing in Ultimate mode was huge, but the fact that you could get killed and have your character deleted if you weren’t revived in three minutes gave most players a sense of tension in making sure their characters stayed alive.

Mastes
Shaiya Online – The only MMORPG to feature permanent death

Excessive grinding and lack of quest variety

Grinding. Grinding everywhere. A lot of MMOs out there seem to fall back on this. It is fairly common for MMOs to use grinding as content filler. This might be fine for offline RPGs, but when you get to the level of grind in an MMO where you’ll spend over a day just to get one level or you know that you can’t get an ability until after you’ve sunk in months and months of game play, it stops being fun and you start to ask yourself why you’re doing it.

Craft
This is what most MMOs seem to resort to.

And also lack of any quest variety can also be comparable to excessive grinding. A player doesn’t  feel any sort of accomplishment or attachment to the world they’re in if they are forced to slaughter a million rats or boars or deal with NPCs that just act like vending machines to give players more quests so they can do more grinding just to advance. Most MMOs have been designed around the grind system for so long that the companies see this and the profit they generate, and refuse to evolve. I guess as the old saying goes:  “If it’s not broke (for them,) why fix it?”

Imitation of other MMOs

A lot of companies these days like to take the most popular MMO and create copycat MMOs to bank on its success. Imitation as they say is the ultimate form of flattery, but I see this as incredibly unimaginative game design. I cannot see how any player would feel any sense of attachment to the game world of these copycat MMOs especially if they previously played the MMO it’s imitating. Perfect example of this experience would be from my time playing Elsword and then switching over to playing Fists of Fu (also known as “East Fantasy Online”.) As much as Fists of Fu tired to throw in some originality, I had a major sensation of “been here, done that”.  I couldn’t feel like a part of the game world for East Fantasy Online simply because I felt as if I played this game before.

Communities

Here is the biggest and most important part of immersion in an MMO: The overall community. Just imagine this: You’re playing your favorite MMO, roaming around town and generally enjoying yourself. You stop to look around and start asking players if they want to party up with you for dungeon raiding or something, and the only response you get from a random player is “no, piss off plz”. While dealing with rude people may be true to life, dealing with rude players that talk like they’re on an IRC can make the game world feel out of touch. This is just a small scenario that adds to the many other situations you might have playing with others in an MMO.

Trying to enjoy playing with a group of random players is fairly difficult (for me, anyway,) because I would typically end up with players that complain a lot and are greedy looters. Playing with people you actually know in real life, however, can be far more enjoyable. It’s almost impossible to have every player in an MMO talk coherently or role-play accordingly to make the game world feel alive. There are some MMOs out there that have a strict role-playing only rule, but even then, some people like to break out of character and talk as they would normally because they think it would be funny or something.

One more thing I’d like to add: Bots and gold farmers. Seeing characters roam the game world with no one playing them and gold farmers that spam messages all over about how you should buy their bot gathered gold breaks immersion on so many levels.

Spambots

Conclusion

UIs, death penalties, grinding, imitation and communities; all of these factors can make or break immersion, and since a lot of MMOs do not seem to break away from these conventions, they lack immersion. Single player games can create a better sensation of immersion since the game worlds are fixed. If a game developer truly wants to create an immersive experience, stricter play rules would have to be enforced and lots of polish and refinement of typical MMO norms would have to be made.

I suppose if you’re the kind of person that doesn’t care to be immersed in the game they’re playing, most of these issues won’t bother your. As for everyone else that does: They may have to look elsewhere.

Epic Duel Review: A Real Duel That’s EPIC

Epic Duel Review: A Real Duel That’s EPIC
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Epic Duel is a turn based fighting game, which you can play in the comforts of your web browser. The game runs on flash format and has an awesome set of visuals to back it up. What makes this game special is its simple yet fun method of game play. It’s always fun to whack enemy players along the way, so PVP enthusiasts may actually have a lot of fun playing this game. Take it as a more interactive version of My Brute, which is also a flash based fighting game that doesn’t give the players the ability to control their characters. So how EPIC is Epic Duel? Guess we’re about to find out…

Create Your Epic Duelist

There are three different classes in the game, each with their own fighting style and skill set. The Mercenary acts as the tank-ish warrior in the game, with a high damage output and utility skills such as buffs and healing magic, which boosts their efficacy in close quarter combat. The Tech Mage, otherwise known as the resident mage is your everyday spell nuker. They don’t get as many vitality points as the Mercenary but can be quite a threat when ignored. Finally, we have the Bounty Hunter who acts as the rogue (in terms of vitality and damage) in the game. They have a low attack power but often strike in installments, allowing them to cause massive damage on a single turn. Players will have a fun time customizing their duelists as the game provides a hefty character creation interface that allows them to edit the finer details of their avatars. Each gender also differs in terms of hairstyles and gear, making it less dull in terms of visuals.

Epic Duel

Starting Up

I have to say, I was utterly confused after catapulting myself onto my first 2-on-2 due to the lack of tutorials in the game. The bright side however is that the game has a very short learning curve, allowing players to adapt easily even after being randomly thrown in their game.

2-on-2 Duels? It’s So EPIC!!!

The object of the game is beat the living buhjeezus out of your opponent/ opponents with your created character and their provided talents. The best part about this game is that it allows you to team up with another player randomly to fight against 2 other players. You can always slug it out in a one-on-one duel to the death, but why? The more, the “EPIC-ER”. I’m not sure if it’s just luck, but the game seems to bring balance to each map, teaming a newbie player along with a highbie to avoid newb-rape. This makes the game a lot more balanced, allowing level 1 players to keep up with high level players. You can also invite players to a duel simply by clicking on them, but do make sure that you don’t just challenge everyone you see (unless you want to be smothered by epic highbies).

Skill Trees and Attributes

Another awesome feature is the skill tree. Like most MMOs, players can customize their skill tree or at least its method of progression as they level up. There’s a little shortage regarding the skills provided in the game but they do differ in terms of power when you level them up individually. The game also lets players customize their character’s attributes or stats, allowing them to fit their users play style.

SKill

Less Tier-Whoring?

If you want to be on top you’ll need a lot of power, and what better way to get more UMPH in your punch than to visit the item mall? Yes, the game has a pretty big item mall, with enough armor sets and weapons to let players customize their character to the fullest. Some powerful items can be acquired simply by completing quests/missions so buying from the item mall will only speed up the process. It’s a good thing since item mall hoggers won’t necessarily be unstoppable in the long run. Balance?

Achievements And Other Extras

One reason why players find it hard to stop playing is the presence of achievements. The game doesn’t really have much to offer in terms of game play variety, but it’s really hard to stop when you’re on the verge of unlocking these medals. Achievements serve as the player’s trophy, allowing them to keep track of their accomplishments in the game. A very simple system, yes, but definitely something that increases re-play value.

Tier

Tired of walking around? Weird enough, the game features an array of emoticons that you can use for the lulz. Not that anyone can see you do it, as most of the conversations I’ve had took place in between battles.

Graphics and Interface

The game actually makes use of its flash elements well. The characters breathe, attack, and defend in perfect animation. The background looks absolutely awesome as well, with its semi cartoony property that works well with the game’s futuristic fighter theme. Items and equipment also look different from one another (that’s one way of avoiding clones).

 The Verdict

I would have to say that Epic Duel is a casual game of epic proportions. It’s simple and easy to learn, allowing players to quickly adapt upon playing. The graphics are really good and makes total use of the flash engine provided. Fighting random people is actually pretty fun. Perhaps my only gripe about this game is that the game would probably a hell of a lot better with sounds. It’s kinda hard to appreciate the hard-hitting visuals without real BOOMs backing it up. It’s weird really. The game features an ENABLE sound effects options, but the only sound I heard was from clicking on the menu. Irrelevance issue? Still, I would say that this is a game worth playing. If you’re looking for something to play, possibly something brainless and fun at the same time, then this game is for you.

Pros:
– Highly Addictive
– Matchmaking is pretty fast
– Different weapons and armor sets to choose from
– Easy to learn
– Character customization
– Awesome visuals
– Achievements.

Cons:
– Lacks other methods of game play (it’s just one-on-one or two-on-two).
– Useless emoticons (they should’ve just enabled this option while fighting).
– Lack of tutorials (then again, who needs them?).

Craft of Gods Introduces A New RVR Area and Goes Gold

Craft of Gods Introduces A New RVR Area and Goes Gold

Kalicanthus Entertainment, leading company in the Italian online gaming market, announces that a new map, where the forces of Light and Darkness will face every day, will be introduced soon in its MMORPG Craft of Gods. The game has also gone gold and it has entered the manufacturing process which will lead to a retail distribution in the Benelux market following the agreement signed with Iceberg Interactive.

Kalikanthus

The new map will feature three strongholds: one belonging to the Light, one to the Darkness and a neutral one. The neutral fortress will contain a relic that can be claimed by both factions. To take possession of the relic, a faction must penetrate into the neutral fortress and carry that to its castle. However, the opposite faction will not be certainly looking at: if it will manage to enter into the enemy fortress and find the relic, the relic will be automatically ported inside the neutral castle. The relic will be very coveted, because his possession will allow entering into to the last part of the new dungeon “The Caves of Tallion”, where the faction that holds the relic will face new powerful bosses that will drop legendary items and enrich its pockets.

Created by Russian developer studio Cyberdemons, Craft of Gods  is a new 3D fantasy MMORPG based on Slavic mythology. Set in a huge world with 25 different maps, Craft of Gods provide players with a great Realm versus Realm (RvR) and Player versus Player (PvP) experience, but it will also appeal to Player versus Environment (PvE) oriented gamers. Players can choose between 6 different races divided into 3 factions (Light, Darkness and Neutral) and create their character that can then be completely customized; in fact there are no classes in Craft of Gods, but only skills: each player can choose from 14 schools of skills, each containing 15 powers – for a total of 210 different skills that assure a great depth of customization. Fight for your Realm to become a Demigod and gain special powers.
