Lore: Mathosian Civil War

Lore: Mathosian Civil War
From the War Journal of Aedraxis Mathos

Entry I

On this day we, Aedraxis Mathos I of unbroken lineage, undertook the siege of Port Scion, jewel of our empire and home of our royal brother Zareph. His city is rich beyond measure, yet Zareph has refused to fund imperial plans for expansion, plotting instead to supplant our rightful rule. Though arrogant, he is nonetheless our brother. Mathosians! When you read this to your children, and they to theirs, know that your king watched with heavy heart the arc of catapult stones and Mage-fire that tore down the walls of his brother’s house.

Rift Guardian Intro

Entry II

Port Scion is ours, and yet we have no joy of her. Zareph has fled, taking most of his nobles, his army, every able-bodied citizen, and somehow, all the riches of the city! He left only the citizens too weak to travel (and not even all of those!) and the city in the care of his honor guard, two hundred men who managed, through trickery and spite, to hold Port Scion for three weeks under heavy assault.

Rift Mathosia Tree

Inquiring by the most insistent means, I learned that Zareph had anticipated my wrath. Over some months, he daily sent scores of people out of the city, disguised as travelers. This proves Zareph’s planned betrayal.

I had every nobleman’s wife remaining in Port Scion beheaded. Let no crooked lineage bear issue!

Entry III

At last, the gold! One of my dragon knights caught a soldier stooping to an icon of Thedeor and noticed a trick panel on the idol’s base. The panel opened to a secret room containing enormous riches, though only a quarter of Port Scion’s treasure. We emptied the room and left the worshipful soldier in exchange, there to contemplate the gods.

Rift MMORPG Spirit Slash

Having taken most of the funds, Zareph has robbed his king of much-needed resources. With peasants and merchants alike withholding our due and reasonable taxes, coffers remain low. Still, this is a much-needed boost. We have hired southern mercenaries to harry Zareph’s outlaws and commissioned our old tutor Orphiel to build Ethian war machines. These shall lay him low, and then Orphiel will open the planes themselves to be conquered by a united Mathosia. Zareph could have marched into these other worlds behind me. Now he will go before me, his skull atop my banner.

Entry IV

Accursed, blasted, filthy Kalmar! My mercenaries and machines had finally cornered Zareph in the castle of my dear murdered friend, Ulfrid of Gloamwood. As my men scaled the battlements, who should charge my bodyguards but Greatsword-bloody-Cyril himself! He tossed my knight’s head onto the battlements to show Zareph’s forces the nature of my minions and then tried to assassinate his king! I gave ground- strategically, of course! At last, to expedite my victory, I focused my power on my men, and they set down the burdens of flesh and life, becoming a wave of rattling bones that assaulted Zareph and distracted Cyril. Satisfied with impending victory, I departed to join my lovely Alsbeth and her councilors.

Entry V

How can this be? Zareph and Cyril defeated my undead and marched to Silverwood, where they met a contingent of High Elves led by the harlot Shyla. Borrin of the Dwarves has also joined them, offering the smithcraft his people have denied my forces. Even my dotard father’s black-clad by-blow Corwin has managed to stop weeping over the granitewoods I harvested for my war effort to join the rebels. As I write, they march on my position at Ardenburgh.

Oh, but they will find more than they bargained for. For centuries the eldest son of the Mathosian king has ruled Telara, and for eternity I shall rule all creation. Beyond my legions upon legions of walking dead, beyond my own sorcerous prowess, I have had that narcissistic fool Orphiel build a machine to open the planes. One in particular, where the rest of me resides.

Rift MMORPG Mathosia Guard

For I am not yet whole, have never been whole all my life. I shall tear apart the sky, and my other half shall join with me. Think of it! I am the promised half of Him who is the most vast and ultimate of beings. Already, I am His equal.

I think I shall finally return to the proper, Royal We…

HEAT Online Review : Casual MMO Racer

HEAT Online Review : Casual MMO Racer
By Umar Farooq (Kluey), OnRPG journalist.

HEAT Online is a free MMO racing game that offers  players a ton of different game modes and the ability to customize your car so it can be truly, your car. If you’re looking for a racing game for casual play, HEAT Online is for you. If you’re looking for a competitive racing game, HEAT Online is still a great choice. It has an awesome rating system in which you lose more in a loss than you gain in win giving it the competitive feel.

Starting out:

When starting out, you can select the instant play option or register your account. Instant play allows you to get the feel of the game by being able to play online without an account. I do recommend you register an account simply because it’s a very easy process that takes less than a minute.

Character creation is very simple. You are given a choice of 3 cars all of which have their own attributes to fit your style of play.  For example one of the cars may have higher speed while another has less speed but more acceleration. After you’ve made an account, picked your car and are ready to race you will have to complete the tutorial. The tutorial is a short and simple runway from start to finish with different obstacles and instructions for controls.

Gameplay:

The auto-join system does have some things that need work. Some players take quite a while to hit the “ready” button and others take extremely long to load. The layout on the auto-join system is also a bit confusing for your first match. After the first match you will start to understand the auto-join system and it becomes quite a luxury.  While waiting for players to enter the room you can practice on a track. Basically you get to drive around a track without any objectives or finish points. Once there are enough players it will automatically transfer you to the racetrack.

The graphics of this game are amazing at high quality. At low quality they are perfect for people with weaker graphic cards or a slower computer. The game is good for people who play on a business or home computer that isn’t necessarily made for gaming. Compared to some of the leading offline Racing Games such as Gran Turismo, HEAT online does have limited graphics but compared to other MMO Racing Games the graphics really stand out.

HEAT England Racer

The driving isn’t exactly smooth though. Drifting is a bit rough and making sharp turns is extremely difficult. To be honest, driving like you would in Burnout won’t work in this game. The tutorial does say drifting is better and what not but after a bit of play, it seems that slowing down before turns is much more efficient and in the long run, will cut your lap time.

The amount of skill needed in this game is very high. To excel and get into first place, you’ll either need ridiculously good control or you’ll need to be very, very lucky.  The grassy banks or the parts on the sides of the road slow you down so much that driving on them for a few seconds can really put you in a bad position.

What I really like about HEAT online is that there is nothing that can make a player in 8th place suddenly jump into to 1st place. There’s no guns or traps like in Drift City or Upshift Strike Racer.

Customizability:

One of the things that really pleased me was the ability to customize so many things. One of my favorite things was the fact that you could take your favorite music and use that instead of the boring default game music.

Another neat thing was the ability to customize your car. In all of my races I haven’t seen two cars that were exactly the same apart from the beginner cars  which had different colors. There are so many items from the shop that you can put on your car and make it truly, your car.

HEAT Customized

Community:

The community has a whole lot of good things but at the same time, a whole lot of not so good things. There is a Social room that you can go to from the Olympic square, which is basically your lobby. In the Social portal there’s a bunch of names with their levels and status. You can also right click them for more information about their account. There’s an invite to play, add friend and send message tab. This ensures a well-knit community and an easy way to get help from GS’s (Game Sage).

HEAT Online Players

The World:

HEAT Online has a very interesting world. You start at Olympic Square. It’s basically a lobby that has a portal for each: tutorial, auto-join a game, create a game, show list of games and a social portal. Everything is approached in your car that you’ve upgraded/customized and made your own. Outside of this small lobby, there’s a large world with a bunch of streets and drives. I haven’t found an important use for this but it’s really interesting when you’re driving around and see a Jigsaw puzzle challenge or an Event Calendar portal.

HEAT Quest

Conclusion:

To wrap it all up, HEAT Online is an awesome game and there’s no reason for you to not tryit. It’s not something I see myself playing in a year or two but I definitely don’t regret trying this game at all. Even if you’re not a Racing Game fan this game is a must try.

Pros:

– Incredible graphics and game play
– Has a great way to keep the community together
– Easy for new players and casual gamers but also competitive for the hardcore gamers
– Can be run on almost any computer

Cons:
– Hard for new players to get use to the funky auto-join system
– Drifting doesn’t have the right benefits and is very hard to pull off

TERA Unveils Details on The Human Race History

TERA Unveils Details on The Human Race History

Frogster goes further on its revelations about TERA, expected to be launched in 2011. Further details on two classes, the Mystic and the Sorcerer, are released alongside with the background of the Human race, one of the important factions of the persisting and evolving universe of TERA.

The Mystic and The Sorcerer: Dancing with magic
Amongst the various classes found in TERA that are focused on magic, you can find the Mystics; mages possessing the ability to use ancient magic in order to summon creatures which can fight alongside them, curse their enemies or heal allies.

On the other hand, you can find the Sorcerer. This powerful warrior focuses the power of elements through a floating disc and blasts all of his opponents. Players are warned: there is a good reason not to cross in front of a mage disc.

The Human race: Ligare humanum est.
If there is one race available in nearly every single MMORPG out there, it must be the Human race. Everyone knows them or has heard of their stories. But in TERA, humans are a bit different.

Mankind in TERA has been transformed and deeply influenced by the curse of an angry god. As a result, for thousands of years, Humans have been condemned to live as nomads and cannot settle: wandering from continent to continent , they meet the other habitants of Tera, sealing friendships or suffering slavery.

However, when arose the threat of the Argons, metallic creatures threatening the universe of TERA, the Humans put to good use of their patience and pragmatism which their long exile had taught them. They are at the origin of the creation of the Valkyon federation and try to federate as many of the races they met during their long journey as they can, with only one objective: repelling the Argons.

Erebus: Travia Reborn Review – The Forces of EEEVIL Beckons

Erebus: Travia Reborn Review – The Forces of EEEVIL Beckons
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Erebus: Travia Reborn is a free-to-play action-packed MMORPG with a dark feel. Published by Outspark, the game resembles a modern day Diablo with all the familiar elements from the classic. The game is actually more of a re-casting of the first Travia game, this time with more features and add-ons to please both new and long-time players (bet they’re all doing happy backflips by now). The game is more hack n’ slash, but the player population states that a lot of people really love this game. So what makes Erebus different from other hack n’ slash games? Or better yet, what makes Erebus Online stand out as an MMO?

Outdated? Hmmm

Upon logging in, you’ll be prompted to CHOOSE (note: CHOOSE) your character. Unlike other up-to-date MMOs, Erebus Online lacks options that will further define your character. Geez, a hairstyle option would’ve been nice. It’s actually pretty similar to Dekaron/ 2Moons, which relies completely on equipment to make your characters stand out or different. There isn’t even a gender option to at least define characters further. It wouldn’t be much of a problem if we’re playing single-player games like Diablo, but we’re talking about tons of players in a persistent virtual plane. Surely it’s not proper to see your clones scattered across the newbie area.

Classes

Other than the lack of character editing and the lack of gender options, the game also lacks classes which by far is the most defining feature in MMORPG character customization. There are four basic classes: the Warrior, a class which pretty much belongs to every MMORPG out there; the Mage, who is the ultimate nuker/ long-ranged damage dealer in the game; the Cleric, who heals and deals damage; and of course, the Archer who specializes in long ranged combat.

Redeeming Quality

The beauty or at least redeeming quality of this shortage in classes is the character’s ability to evolve into one of two-to-three (per class) prestige classes upon reaching a certain level. Warriors for example can turn into Paladins, while Clerics can either follow the path of light to become a healing machine Bishop or tread the dark path to become a Necromancer. The choice is yours, so make sure you choose what complements your play style.

Grindfest 2010

For a new game, the Erebus still sports the hefty grinding found in old MMOs. I’m not really against grinding, but players will barely feel their characters grow after a level or two. Since you can only get a new skill every four levels, you won’t really feel any difference after leveling up the first three times. There are tons of quests that will aid you in your grind fest, but note that these are mostly grind quests that will order you to kill a load of monsters for extra exp.

Grind Fest 2010 Travia Reborn

Crafting FTW

After playing tons of MMOs, I’d say crafting and upgrading items has become a staple feature for MMO gamers everywhere. The crafting process in this game is relatively easy and quite fun. Since players are given the option to break down items for crafting materials, they can experiment on various formulas until they get their desired or favored weapon. I honestly wouldn’t want it any other way, as these random outcomes tend to be exciting.

PVP

The PVP system is quite good in my opinion with the game featuring the traditional guild PVP arenas and one-on-one duels. The most awesome part about this feature is the wagering system in the duel system. Since random duel invites can get annoying, it would be great to at least earn from it once in a while. Winning in Guild PVP also puts the victor in charge of a certain city, allowing them to tweak taxes and such (I love playing tyrant). As far as PVP goes, Erebus’ player vs player feature is one of the most rewarding PVP systems ever.

Graphics and Interface

If you’re looking for awesome graphics, then I suggest you find another MMO. Erebus’s graphics aren’t really that bad, but it does look pretty old. The characters tend to look awful at times, but it’s not like all games sport next-gen graphics, so I guess it’s forgivable. The skills and spell animations were nicely done, there  are enough lighting effects and character movements to animate the given skill. I guess it’s all about presentation. Kudos to the game for making GOOD use of an outdated graphic engine. I guess it can be considered as a plus in some ways, seeing as the game isn’t too demanding and can be run by old units. The interface is rather basic, and is comparable to Ragnarok Online’s super outdated HUD. I’m sure it still functions the way it’s supposed to, but it always helps to let the in-game elements share the overall feel of the game. Just sayin~

Erebus Interface and Graphics

The Verdict

All in all I’d say Travia Online fans will definitely have their hands full with this one. The game isn’t really that bad. I guess it’s just that the features are a bit outdated for a game released in 2010. The graphics are a bit old, but still look good nonetheless. At least no one will have to worry about computer specs when running this game. What really got my attention was the game’s lack of character customization such as the gender option. Like I said it wouldn’t be that much of a problem if we were playing single-player games, but we’re talking about persistent territories. Everyone wants to pretend that he’s a chick (or vice versa). The shortage in classes is also quite troublesome, as not only will you look like everyone else, there’s only a small percentage of you not running into another clone.

Pros

-Plain fun

-Makes use of its elements well?-Travia is REBORN

-Good player population

-Rewarding PVP system?-Dungeons

Cons

-Lack of classes

-Lack of character customizations

-NO GENDER OPTIONS?

-Outdated graphics

Dungeon Fighter Online Announces Act VI: Kiss of the Gun

Dungeon Fighter Online, the classic side-scrolling arcade-style beat ’em up MMO from Nexon America, has released Act VI: Kiss of the Gun, featuring the highly anticipated female gunner awakening character class update.

Dungeon Fighter Online Warm Gun

Happiness is a Warm Gunner Awakening

The female gunner is revered for her speed and unerring discipline while wielding deadly firearms, and now players can explore special new awakening skills and attacks for the each of her advanced classes. The Ranger awakening to Corsair includes a blade-equipped revolver; the Launcher subclass awakens to Demolitionist with devastating cannon fire; the Spitfire awakening to Valkyrie launches a pulsing electromagnetic field, frying nearby enemies; and the Mechanic awakens to Metalheart by unleashing an ultimate G-series mech warrior wielding a Gatling gun, missile attack, and laser attack.

Additionally, players are now able to explore the brand new area to the DFO universe known as Empyrean, a region long besieged by relentless dictators.  After an extended period of tyranny, Empyrean’s capital city of Ghent established a bustling culture symbolizing the region’s freedom. Unfortunately this cultural revolution attracted a new faction of vagrants known as the Kartel, whose soldiers have kidnapped Ghent’s Princess Erje and unleashed persistent attacks upon the city. The citizenry of Ghent call upon Dungeon Fighters to explore East Ghent Gate, South Ghent Gate, and Ghent Outskirts and pursue the evil Kartel to find the city’s beloved princess.

In celebration of the holidays, Dungeon Fighter Online is giving away items for free every day during the ‘Tis the Season for Giving event just for logging in. Players can expect to find gifts such as 2x EXP potion, skill reset items, DFO figurines and NX (in-game currency). The ‘Tis the Season for Giving event is just one of many events coming to Dungeon Fighter Online this holiday season.

Combat Arms, a fast-paced online first person shooter (FPS) from Nexon America, has released “Operation: Desert Fox”, a new cooperative battle map where players join forces to defeat an evil terrorist faction in a content update for Dec. 15th. The Desert Fox mission adds another PVE map to Combat Arms, giving players an exciting new way to level up their soldiers, as well as earn exclusive rewards once they beat the mission.

Crazy Like a Desert Fox

Set in the rough desert terrain of Mogadishu, players discover that forces will be sent to investigate a person of interest believed to somehow be connected to a terrorist plot. The mission is to pinpoint the suspect’s exact location, capture him alive, obtain strategic attack information, and ultimately put a stop to the terrorist cell.

Players are encouraged to suit up with Codename: Raven, a new specialist added to the elite roster of Combat Arms soldiers. Codename: Raven is a brilliant tactician and comes equipped with a light armor vest, making her one of the fastest of the known specialists. While she is renowned for her blinding speed in battle, she brings a calm, strategic approach to firefights, and an ability to get past any computer security system, no matter how complex.

EVE Online Update: Incursion, The Echelon & Death of Learning Skills

EVE Online Update: Incursion, The Echelon & Death of Learning Skills

Today marked the second part of the staged deployment of EVE Online: Incursion

Incursion 1.0.1 includes changes to the neural remap window, but more importantly it included two holiday treats for players: The Demise of Learning Skills and the Echelon ship.

The learning skills change comes at the end of an age-old debate about the necessity of learning skills. Learning skills were essentially good long-term investments, as training them at the beginning of a character’s life would assure quicker skill training throughout their career for all other skills. In essence this was learning to get better at learning. However, it was a serious investment of months of time to max them out.

As CCP Zulu, EVE’s Senior Producer, explains: “the time to change them is now, allowing new players an easier path into the game and giving veterans a nice holiday gift in being able to reallocate their skill points spent on learning skills elsewhere and having their attributes adjusted to compensate for the ‘lost’ time benefit of learning skills.”

The Echelon ship, complete with a unique hacking module, has been awarded to each paying account and may be of use later on in Incursion. It’s available for redemption between today and January 3.
