Lego Universe Preview: Absolutely Yes!

Lego Universe Preview: Absolutely Yes!
Jonathan (Ardua) Doyle, OnRPG Journalist.

A little over 20 years ago, my great-aunt visited from America. I did what any self respecting child would do when confronted by a relation that you have never heard of nor seen before.

I hid under the table.

Eventually I was lured out with the promise of toys and this is where my little story gets relevant. The toy was Lego. As I think about all the things I have seen in Lego Universe, I can say with perfect certainty, I feel five or so years old again and I am in love.

Welcome to the land of Imagination

Lego Universe at first blush appears to be aimed at a younger audience. The music is fun and upbeat. The login screen alone is worth a laugh. Between Minifigs (the official name for Lego men) getting up to stuff in the background to the guy in front who is there to help you through logging in. He points to where you’re supposed to type and even politely covers his eyes when you get to the password. It is kid friendly, it’s clear and it was side splittingly funny to me. Two quick bonks on the head (that’ll make sense when you actually log in, poor Minifig) and you’re off to the character creation screen.

Lego Universe Password Peeking
No peeking!

Avatars and outfits

At the time of writing you can create four Minifigs for playing in the game. Fortunately also at the time of writing there are four factions in the game that you can join so you’ll be able to see it all with these slots. Once again NetDevil have gone for friendly and easy interfaces and it works so very well. Customization is quick and you’re ready to step onto the Venture Explorer in no time. A point I would make though is unlike most games where you have to work at unlocking new outfit choices Lego Universe almost gleefully covers you in costume drops. So much so that by the time you leave the tutorial it’s entirely possible to have three new shirts and a little bonus. When you get a new outfit and you want to put it on, it’s as simple as dragging it from your inventory onto your Minifig. Tah-dah you’re now in your new outfit. Some have stats, others have bonuses but a great many just look good. Often new outfit pieces are tied to achievements or mission rewards but they’ve yet to be difficult to get in my experience.

Lego Universe Char Customisation
Character customization

The other part of Avatars, well this is all subjective so your mileage may vary, but NetDevil carries on the interactivity seen on the login screen at character select. Minifigs will react with glee if they’re chosen, try to grab your eye if they’ve not yet been selected and the part that gets me, they look so heart broken when you click to someone else. I only have two characters at the moment and I think this game is aimed, according to the literature, at 8-12 year olds has forged a better link between my emotions and my virtual representation than any other game I’ve played in. I genuinely feel bad picking one Minifig over the other when they make those sad faces at me. Thankfully they get over it quickly and go right back to trying to change your mind with cheeky grins and subtle hints that they want to be played.

Tutorials… haven’t we run enough of them?

If you’re an MMO player like me, you’ve run your fair share of tutorials. They’re always the same aren’t they? Here’s how you walk, here’s how you jump. Don’t forget to breathe, no you don’t mine for fish. The Venture Explorer though is a Tutorial I’ll happily run over and over. It looks fantastic (yes it’s a Lego spaceship) and the instructions aren’t terribly obtrusive. A quick pop up shows you the keys, waits till you press them and then gives you a big thumbs up for it. Standard yes but remember that this game has to appeal to a younger audience than the standard MMO player. We all started somewhere, we were all noobs once and Lego Universe does a great job of easing new players into game play. Also for any completion nuts out there who simply must have every possible unlock in every possible way, there’s plenty of unlocks in Lego Universe and you’ll never be back to the Venture Explorer (well I’ve not managed it anyway), so better to get them now.

Also for old hands at MMOs there are a few parts of the tutorial that are unique to Lego and need to be explained, so it won’t hurt for long. Quickbuilding and the Thinking Hat.

Lego Universe Tutorial
Useful tutorials everywhere

Quickbuilding is the fantastic part you see in the CGI video where all those wonderful blocks whizz out of the Minifigs hands to create something epic.

The Thinking Hat is something you pop on when you have to invent. To get off the Venture you’re going to need a rocket ship and once you’ve all the parts you have to put them together. The rocket model is a simple three piece one but as time goes on you will unlock more and more complex models that not only need more bricks but also bigger and better Thinking Hats (think of them as skill levels).

Living up to Expectations

Speaking of the CGI Trailer for the game…you know what? Lego Universe is pretty much that. Of course you don’t move as fluidly as that sometimes and yes it isn’t nearly the same level of graphics but where most games have the most mind blowing visuals you can conceive of in a trailer with the game rarely matches, Lego Universe delivers on its trailer. You will quickly throw together models for battle and other reasons. You will charge about dressed as a Knight or a Spaceman or a Pirate or heck even a Ninja wielding a laser gun and with a shoulder Parrot. Most importantly you will battle dark forces who threaten imagination and Minifigs everywhere. NetDevil have not promised me that it will change my life or blow my mind or kill (insert Game you think it’d beat in a fan boyish delusion). However it does blow my mind, it does make me laugh and it does make me feel good about games again. There are issues with the game right now that the MMOer in me has trouble with, primarily the chat system. Its current form is very limited and if the word you want isn’t in the games dictionary, you aren’t saying it. However at the same time this is a title to bring more people into our online world, specifically children. If that means I have to go to Ventrilo or Teamspeak to crack jokes and curse with (or probably at) friends to ensure that the game as a whole is secure for younger gamers, so be it.

Lego Universe Building Mode
Building mode – yeah time to play with Lego!

Regardless of any current issue I have, it’s still early days in the beta as of writing so things can change and I’ll do my best to keep you up to date.

One thing has not changed since I first got to the Login screen. This game makes me laugh every single time.

Closed Beta Impressions

You know? I’m damn impressed by NetDevil. Each week brings more places to visit, more corrections, more improvements and more things to do. Each week also affords me plenty of chances to play and submit bug reports. I’ve been in many betas but bar my first, they all tended to be very restricted affairs. Lego currently has a few meaty windows with a good spread of times allowing US and European players to get on and give it a good run. They keep adding to the game and they’ve even recently had a little prize giveaway to beta players that sadly I missed. All in all I am getting a really good vibe from Lego Universe. There’s been serious work put into it and more importantly, more than just a little love. This is more than just a game.

Sure you’ll probably have to shell over money to see it, play it and keep it but whatever the cost involved, I personally will gladly pay it. 20 or so years ago my love affair with a simple toy started. It wasn’t the flashiest toy but it was only limited by my imagination. Now I get to see everything I love about Lego shine on my computer screen. I get to reconnect with the child I was who grew up loving simple games, simple pleasures and simple humour. I get to come back to Lego with the maturity of being an adult and the memories from my childhood. I get to come back and I can admit I am in love.

To be testing NetDevils Lego Universe to me personally is an honour. The day I’m too old, jaded or cynical to crack a smile at the game they’ve made is the day you can put me in a box and in the ground.

Battleswarm Online Review: Crossover battle

Battleswarm Online Review- Crossover battle
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

When I first saw Battleswarm, I was weirded out by the overall concept. For those of you who don’t know, Battleswarm is a new MMO that mixes the elements of FPS shooters and Real Time Strategy games, thus making an awesome hybrid of both genres (Real Time First Person Strategy Combat?). There isn’t really a storyline to ponder on, but the game does have enough action to keep you playing for hours. The game revolves around 2 races, and both have their own distinct gameplay. What makes the game interesting is how they incorporated the face-off between the two genres. Battleswarm is still in its open beta stage, so I can’t say how goodthe final product will be. Anyway, here’s what we have so far.

Starting Up- Brains vs Brawn

You’ll be prompted to take the game’s tutorial course upon starting the game. These tutorials are separated into two categories: Humans (the FPS gameplay) and Bugs (RTS type). It would be wise to do these tutorials as they give rewards upon completion. It’s really amazing how the game managed to blend two diverse genres into one stable system. The overall concept can be compared to the likes of Left 4 Dead, only with a swarm of bloodthirsty bugs controlled by 1-2 micromanaging players. Getting to know the game mechanics is one thing, but applying them in a real game is another. The FPS system is quite self-explanatory and doesn’t require much thinking on the player’s end. On the other hand, the Bugs’ game play is quite complex and requires massive click and hotkey memorization for players to function well. The Bugs tutorial was quite poor in my opinion, as it fails in pinpointing the essentials and strategic methods used when playing as the Bugs. Worry not though, for you will be spending a while in the Rookie channel until you get the hang of it.

Character Building

Relevance Check- Problems With The System

One problem I’ve perceived is the game’s inaccessible settings. Simple actions such as adjusting your mouse sensitivity requires you to exit your current game to access the settings option. The same thing is done when changing resolutions as well as other mandatory settings, so always make sure to tweak your settings to avoid unnecessary quitting due to graphic failure.

The game also suffers from unresponsive controls, specifically on the Bugs’side. There were times when I needed to re-click my units just to be able to highlight them. Also, the Hive seems to have a small click box that hinders most players from highlighting the Bug-maker itself. Quite ironic as something as big as that (graphically speaking) sports a hitbox as small as the bugs it spawns.

Ladderized
Ladderized

Ladderize!

Unlike some MMOs that use the create/join room system, Battleswarm works on a “laddered” pattern. This means that Rookies can only play in the Rookie zone but can team up with higher-level players as long as they stay in the lowbie rooms. This may be a good system for newbies, but greatly affects the player’s learning curve or transition of skill. It would probably be wise to just let the player taste the real thing after the long arse tutorials, as grinding in these rooms is just not fun. Once you attain a higher rank/level, you’ll receive a message indicating your passage to the next set of rooms. This is an irrelevant feature for most players, and could greatly affect the fun factor.

Ladderized
Ladderized

Different Missions? Why Bother?

There are plenty of missions or scenarios in the game, each with their own diverse setting and play style. There are swarm missions where you must destroy the human base when playing as the bugs, its game counterpart where you must play as the humans and destroy the hives, and other generic modes like wipeouts and the traditional point race. It’s amazing that they managed to fit in a lot of game modes, but do know that not all these game modes give the same amount of exp upon completion. During my rookie stage, I kept doing the bug missions (preferably the part where you destroy the human reactor) since it gave more exp than the other modes. The other game modes were much more fun in my opinion, but why play other scenarios when you can progress faster with this easy bug mission? More methods of game play surface as you go further (which includes going head to head with another player). I know the main idea is for us to level up, but why do they have to make leveling slow for those who want to enjoy rather than grind?

Character Customization

You’ll be able to purchase items that will help you optimize your character’s performance as you progress further. Props to the developer as most of the equipment (armor sets) look different from the rest, indicating a small sense of individuality among players. You can also purchase weapons to help you overcome your enemies, as well as fit your desired play style. One thing to be noted is that players can level up in the game. The humans probably had it easy as they only need to pick between 3 distinct stats, unlike bug players who need to study their units in order to know which new unit to pick (literally brains vs brawn).

Brains vs Brawn
Brains vs Brawn

Visuals

As far as visuals go, Battleswarm’s graphics are no laughing matter. The graphic elements are crisp and properly rendered, allowing the game to project awesome looking weapons, detailed aliens and armor sets to satisfy the gamers of today. It’s not the best around, but definitely something worth looking at.

Unit Movement
Unit Movement

The Verdict

Let’s see… the game is basically a face-off between two genres. It still suffers from balance issues, but I guess we’ll have to wait for the finished product. There are also some irrelevant actions sported by the game, such as the jump button. We’re all aware that jumping is quite handy for FPS gamers, but not in this game. You can pass through obstacles and obstructions easily by simply walking over them (including boxes and higher ground). You also decrease your speed when you jump so why bother? If you think that’s bad, you can even get stuck if you try jumping over something. The whole laddered concept may be good for some but will probably suck when you’re the only rookie on the field. The game sports a unique form of game play. It still needs a couple of tweaks, but it’s definitely something worth trying.

Pros:
– It’s RTS vs FPS!
– Good graphics
– Awesome armor sets
– Tons of modes
– Laddered channels?

Cons:
– Irrelevant actions plague it
– Laddered channels?
– Still buggy for now (and I’m not talking about the other race)
– RTS tutorial needs an extreme makeover
– Balance issues.

Games That Should Be Resurrected

Games That Should Be Resurrected
By Mohammad Abubakr, OnRPG Journalist

In the MMO world, games come and go. Most of the time the ‘good’ games continue to receive updates while the ones that do not seem to work out are taken down. Unfortunately at times, games with great potential get shut down. There are various causes as to why this could happen. Some examples are bad management by the team, legal reasons, and financial issues.

Throughout this article, I will go over some of the games that had amazing potential but were shut down. Out of the many games suggested by our community, I have chosen Survival Project, Kart Rider, Tabula Rasa and Gunster. Thank you to all members of our community for offering their opinions, suggestions and information on these games.

Survival Project

We will start off with one of my favourite games; Survival Project. This game is very unique from other MMOs. Instead of the typical point and click, in Survival Project some skill is required to defeat enemies and other players. Survival Project is not an open world game and you are required to create or join a room from the lobby.

The game plays from a top down or bird’s eye view where you can see your character. You move around and attack using only the keyboard. The fighting requires some strategy as you may block attacks and then fire back with a counter attack. One wrong move and you will be killed.

To add some variety to the game, players are able to select between various characters. Each character features a unique play style and may vary in areas such as running speed, attack range, and attack power. You do not have to stick to one character; you may freely change between them depending on your mood.

 Revive Survival Project
Team Battle

To add even more variety, there is a card system which allows users to customize their characters even further.  There are various types of cards that will greatly benefit your character. Each character can equip three cards; a weapon card, armour card and a magic card. These cards provide characters with bonuses and may be upgraded using the in-game currency and elements, which are found while playing.

The reason this game is great compared to other games is that there is so much to do! It is kind of an online mini game where you are not obliged to grind monsters all day until you achieve max level and acquire amazing equipment. It is a casual game in which you can play every once in a while and leave whenever you feel like it.

You can choose to fight monsters, take part in player vs. player battles, just hang out in a community room or even play a simple game like a snowball fight or soccer!

Fortunately, the Korean version is still running. Hopefully a company will pick up this game after going through this article. Rumour has it that ijji might take this game, but this has not been confirmed.

Kart Rider

Like Survival Project, this game is also played casually. This game plays like a game I am sure most of you are familiar with, Mario Kart. Kart Rider, like its name suggests is a cart racing game. Players have the option to customize their carts and characters to suit their play style.

There are various game modes in Kart Rider. You can play any mode at any time depending on your mood. A few of these modes are the item mode which allows user to pick up items along the track to assist them in winning the race, speed mode which is racing without any items and  the scenario mode where the player must fulfill certain missions or goals.

Revive Kartrider
Racing in Kart Rider

To sum it up, Kart Rider was a great game to pass time. Players usually didn’t play it all day to achieve high ranks like other MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Games) but they played it to pass time and enjoy themselves.  Who doesn’t want to play an online Mario Kart game?

Nexon is still hosting the foreign version.

Tabula Rasa

Tabula Rasa is an MMORPG which features a unique combat system. Unlike the usual point and click system, the game plays like an FPS. Players are required to use strategy during battles to stay alive. You must take cover, flank from the right place at the right time and manage your ammunition.

Players may also take part in missions. These missions may have various goals such as defending or capturing a point. Some of the missions are instanced to enhance player experience. Through missions players may also get to decide what they want to do, there isn’t one set way to complete the mission. The actions of each player affect the outcome of the war between the NPCs and the players.

The battle for certain control points is always going on. You had to ensure someone was defending the points and fighting back the monster NPCs unless you wanted to lose the points. Losing points also meant losing things such as re-spawn areas and even shops. The battle never stops!

Gunster

Gunster plays like a 2D side scrolling shooter. Players are able to pick between various characters that differ in terms of health, boosters and speed. Items such as weapons or armour may be bought from the shop to suit your play style. These items will enhance certain stats depending on which you buy.

Players were able to run through missions which increase in difficulty as they progress, or matches where you go against other players. Missions are basically defeating enemies until you come to the boss, defeat it and you gain EXP and money! I know I make it sound lame but with a 2D side scrolling game play, it is very fun! Now the part of the game I find to be more interesting,  PvP. You may play various modes like Capture the Flag (CTF), Deathmatch and Survival. These battles are all about the skills of the players. You must know when to attack, take cover and have good hand eye coordination to aim efficiently.

Revive Gunster
Killing the boss

As you gain EXP and money you are unlocking more items to enhance your character. Keep working to make your character powerful and be feared by the players!

If this game play sounds interesting, feel free to check out games similar to Gunster like Soldat or Metal Slug.

Conclusion

All of these games were amazing, lots of fun and had great potential. What made these games stand out from the rest and possibly the cause they were taken down was that they tried something different from other MMOs.

If there are any publishers reading this article, now you know that gamers really love these games and you should grab this opportunity to bring these games back. It would benefit us all!

Navyfield Online Review: Fast Action

Navyfield Online Review: Fast Action
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist.

If you’re looking for a fast paced game that gives high rewards in little time, then Navyfield Online is the game for you. The game is based on the watery graves of World War II, where players must create and upgrade ships in order to compete with enemy players. Navyfield Online is more of a casual gaming experience rather than the traditional time consuming grindfest. It’s not really the type of game that will lock players in an instance for ten hours; instead, it lets players enjoy every minute of the game with less customizations and more action. Sounds good? Consider it a breath of fresh air after your mundane MMO experience. High-end torpedo battles, carrier gunning, fire control systems, let’s see what else this game has to offer?

Starting up

Before logging in, it is recommended that players to access the tutorial videos located on the main site. Failure to do so may result to a frustrating experience in learning the game’s basics. It’s not really that hard when you know what you’re doing.

After creating your own ship at the ship creation dock, you’ll be prompted to place your sailors on board. The sailor’s job is to maintain or restore your ship as you venture across the world. Once you’ve loaded your ship, you’re ready to participate in battle (gee, that was fast). Note that everything (including your main artillery and firing system) has been fully loaded, but will need some personal tweaking upon reaching a certain point in the game. Call it a more gracious form of newb gear.

Bring In The Recruits!

Picking sailors is like picking your array of spells. You can recruit these individuals by clicking on the new sailor button on the bottom right portion of your shipyard panel. Each sailor has his own specialty so do keep track of your sailors’ stats. There are eleven stats all in all which specifies their roles in battle. Like a mage’s spell book, some are quite proficient with handling repairs (healing) while others concentrate on damage and combat.

Tip: You’ll really need sailors to perform  specific roles in the future, so it would be wise to pick a balanced team.

Setting Up

Much like your everyday MMO game, Navyfield ships also need some equipment  and items to help optimize performance. These ships can be upgraded through special items that can be purchased via points earned through battle. I really like the simplicity of it’s the equipment system as it allows me to wreak havoc faster. Who wants to be stuck in the equipment window for hours anyway?

Building ships

Selection

There are tons of shops in the game, each with their own specialty whether its guns or firing systems. Shops are separated via country so you better remember where you saw that awesome torpedo. I really liked how they put the shops in different countries as it signifies how broad and huge the game world is.

Overview:

Japan:
+ Best torpedoes
+ Dedicated torpedo ships
+ Large CV variety
+ Good Gunners
– Very weak armor

Germany:
+ Great AA guns
+ Best Gunners
+ Long gun range
– Low firepower range

United Kingdom:
+ Best armor
+ Best per shell damage
– Expensive armor
– Slow reload guns

United States:
+ Great CVs
+ Well balanced
+ Best AAW Defense overall

France:
+ Sufficient space for aircrafts
+ Good shell damage
– Limited gun range
– Low shell space

SUPERBATTLEFIGHT

I was actually surprised when joining my first PVP battle due to the number of ships that fought side by side. Players are separated via teams, who must band together to overthrow the opposing faction. Joining PVP sessions is probably the best way to find out what your ship is lacking, be it sailors, FCS or engines. Players can still earn exp and in game currency regardless of the outcome, so keep joining and upgrade accordingly.

Navyfield PVP
Navyfield PVP

Subscription Whores?

Since the game is free to play, it’s already given that a Premium subscription option is available for players. I understand that it’s their way of earning money but it really messes with the in game balance as it often gives subscribers a big advantage over their opponents. This includes moneymaking and heightened experience. It’s still enjoyable as a free to play game, but if you’re in it for the competition, then I suggest paying for it.

Graphics

As far as graphics go, Navyfield online is far from today’s graphic standard, however, you could say that the graphics are quite fitting for the game. The game supports the isometric birds eye view with 2d sprites similar to that of the old Red Alert series. Despite its outdated elements, the game is still enjoyable and can still serve as eye-candy for most gamers. The explosions are still satisfying, and the lighting effects aren’t bad either. There’s a difference between games that need a lot of work and games whose graphics should not be upgraded as it was meant to look that way. In my opinion, this game definitely belongs in the latter category.

 Navy Graphics

The Verdict

When I first played the game, I knew that it would be a breeze. Easy upgrades, more action than talk, less computing, it was definitely an enjoyable experience. The graphics are pretty old but more than bearable. I know there are games with better graphics out there but I seriously wouldn’t want this game any other way. The PVP mode is enthralling, with tons of players who are ready to give you the fight of your life. I’m not really a fan of ships and tactics games but this one really appealed to me. Try it guys! It’s free to play!

Pros:
– Easy
– Awesome Tutorials
– Tons of Players
– Really fun
– Everything happens so fast

Cons:
– Graphics are bad (redeemable)
– Sounds effects are a bit shattered
– May not appeal to many.

Aika’s Expansion Now Live

Aika’s Expansion Now Live

Gala-Net has released the first major content expansion for Aika Online, titled Ashes of Betrayal. The highly anticipated patch contains new features which enhance all aspects of the player experience, including a level cap increase to 60, expanded Nation vs. Nation wars, a dramatic new quest storyline, new areas, second tier class evolutions, and a nation population balance system which provides free in-game items.

Aika - The first expansion is live!

Ashes of Betrayal throws players in the middle of an impending civil war among the Kynari – mysterious half-man, half-bird beings who have inhabited the beautiful rainforests of Lakia since ancient times.  The corrupt usurper Darkrane killed the rightful leader of the Kynari and is manipulating both Humans and Kynari with his lies.  Players must unravel the secret of Darkrane’s treachery while battling all-new monsters and exploring the never-before-seen maps Darkrane Forest and Ashwood.  The adventure culminates in an amazing new open-air dungeon which will be released later this year.

Veterans and newcomers alike will enjoy the development of new military and political challenges posed by the expansion of Relic War, our most popular massive PvP mode.  Nations will clash in even bigger battles with the addition of a fourth Temple in Ashwood to stash their hard-won relics.  To ensure a competitive balance between warring forces, the “underdog nation” system will provide free packages of useful in-game items to new and low level players for joining the least populated nation.  High level players will encounter the greatest test of their skills yet as their characters evolve into more powerful forms with new attacks and equipment after level 50.

Aika - The Darkrayne Kinari are ready for you

Finally, the expansion will also introduce premium mounts into the Aika Item Shop, allowing players to purchase new styles of our much-beloved upgradable mounts, including the Warrior’s war hamster and the Dual Gunner’s hoverbike.

A War Hamster… really? AWESOME!
