Realm of the Mad God: Pixel Nostalgia

Realm of the Mad God Review

What happens when 8 bit graphics meets a browser based massively multiplayer shooter? Realm of the Mad God happens. This online game is brought to us by Wild Shadow Studios. Oryx, the very angry god, wrangles the player’s character to his world to be eaten by his minions who protect him while destroying the land. It is up to the heroes of the nexus to destroy all of the Mad God’s monsters, culminating in defeating him in glorious combat. The story is fairly thin. It serves mostly as a means to get players into the game.

Realm of the Mad God Review

In Realm of the Mad God we are given an overhead view of our character. Starting out as an archer, the player learns the basics of how to move and attack. There is a main screen inside the browser for gameplay, and the player’s equipment, loot, and stats are located to the right. The focus of the gameplay is simple, stay healthy while defeating quest monsters and anything else that crosses your path. Character death is permanent and forces the gamer to start over. The max level for characters is 20; it takes about an hour or so to reach this level. All the characters are unique but possess a layer of familiarity which makes it easier to switch from character to character. Although this game might look like something off of your old NES system, the client will remember your character should you ‘reset’ your browser by accident while playing.

Remember how Vindictus showed us action combat could modernize a game? This is action combat at its simplest. Stats do take a role in this but the player’s skill at both aiming and dodging will determine who survives. Moving is simple with the wasd control scheme. Clicking the left mouse button will send your attack bullets in the direction of your cursor. Each class also has a special ability that can be used with the spacebar from the priests area heal to the assassins poison cloud. When enemies die they yield experience and randomly dropped loot. Those items can either be equipped or held in your inventory. A cash shop is available for those gamers who feel like spending some real cash for nexus items. These items are mostly aesthetic and unnecessary for gameplay.

Realm of the Mad God Review

The Nexus serves as the hub village of the Mad God’s world. It is also the only place you can truly feel safe. This is a lobby for players to heal, group, and buy items. Characters can also trade items they find in the game. In the middle of the nexus there are portals. These portals serve as a gateway to and from the main questing realm. Players can teleport back to the nexus at any time to save their characters. This is also where equipment can be purchased to strengthen your toon. Realm of the Mad God has a great community of friendly players who tend to drop loot in the nexus for others to snag too.

Realm of the Mad God Review

Equipment is important in Realm of the Mad God. As you progress the game grows harder and harder. The first monsters are simple snakes and pirates, but once the demons, pentracts, and cyclops gods start attacking from the woodwork it is a real challenge to stay living. The higher bullet attacks from these creatures not only deal substantial damage but can also blind, confuse, or silence your hero.

Realm of the Mad God Review

The best way to stay alive around end game is to join a group. When other adventurers are close by they appear under your inventory. The player has the opportunity to teleport to anyone within close proximity. Thankfully, every player in that immediate area gains experience points when a monster dies. Group battles are hectic and exciting. Seeing a fellow player die while in a group definitely sets an exhilarating and foreboding tone.

Realm of the Mad God Review

The entire game feels like a pixilated Nintendo era rpg. The background, terrain, characters, monsters, bosses, bullets, and items are all pixel goodness. Sometimes the pixel look can be a little boring; the armor for instance is just different color switches. Weapons however change color and shape. The backgrounds, while barren in a few areas, are very well done. Usually, the terrain has many different objects to look at and hide behind. The terrain also changes to resemble deserts, valleys, mountains, forests, and swamps.

Realm of the Mad God Review

Breathtaking or not, the sprites for this game are well made. In a game with a plethora of monsters who want to wreck the world in chaotic battles, you will never have issues differentiating yourself from the baddies. From skeletons, to goblins, to dwarves, to demons, every creature looks unique. Character sprites likewise all have a familiar size but wear separate costumes by class giving them all a varied look.

If only they had put a similar effort into the game’s music. The sound effects are standard but forgettable. There is only one song and it goes on forever in a loop. This definitely can grate on the nerves. Just remember to bring some tunes for this trip. Happily, the in game music can be turned off at any time via the browser screen.

Realm of the Mad God Review

This browser game is very unique. Realm of the Mad God isn’t without flaws. Its one song can be distracting after a few rounds of it. The permadeath feature will also make many players feel a little cheated. When every game seems to be running on the unreal engine it is somewhat of a letdown that such a well-made game as this is stuck in a pixel shell. Regardless, graphics aren’t everything. Game play is addictive. Fighting alongside a group with monsters attacking from all sides makes for such a classic experience.

Realm of the Mad God Review

But hey, this game is free and requires no download! In a market where many online games released these days following cookie cutter World of Warcraft and Everquest inspired builds, it is refreshing to see a fun, free, addictive game that plays by different rules. Oryx the mad god wants to destroy all life on the planet to feed his minions. Don’t let him win!

Mythos EU Enters Open Beta

Mythos EU Open Beta Starts Today

Today marks the start of the Mythos open beta, meaning everyone can now hack and slash their way through the game’s gruelling dungeons and hordes of ferocious beasts. All of the game servers were opened at midday, allowing previously registered players, well over 100,000 in number, to get in and mingle with those unfortunate enough to have gotten into the closed beta. From now on the only key you have to worry about is a dungeon’s master key!

The hack’n’slash MMO will continue to be fine tuned and optimised for localisation between now and the official release on the 28th of April. Also, high-level players will get some new meat to chew on in the next two weeks, and hopefully they like it chilled because the level cap is being raised from 27 to 50, opening the way for adventurers to enter the snowy region of Umbral Peaks.

Runescape Unviels Clan Upgrade Expansion

Runescape Unviels Clan Upgrade Expansion

Jagex Games Studio has announced the final release RuneScape’s Clan system. This update gives clans a real presence in the game, offering new tools to help players organize and administer their clans, as well as ways to advertise their clans and show allegiance to them in RuneScape.

RuneScape Clan System Update

The Clan update will include the following features:

In-game Clan Support

For the first time players will now be able to create clans in-game and recruit new clanmates, assigning ranks and job titles to their members.

Additional Clan Chat Channels

This update includes two new chat channels for players: the current ‘Clan Chat’ system remains as it is, although it will be renamed ‘Friends Chat’. The new channel will offer a unique system for players to communicate with fellow clan members (and access to chat on another clan’s chat channel as a guest). Players will even be able to keep track of communication in all three channels at the same time.

Clan Camp

Clan members now have access to a new area on the RuneScape map which will serve as a hub for clans to socialize, recruit and plan. The Clan Camp is the starting point for all the new features and includes everything players need to start a clan, meet with their clan, recruit new members and plan their next adventure.

RuneScape Clan System Update

Greater Clan Customization

Players will now be able to customize their clan with clan mottos, motifs and colors. These will be reflected in clan capes and a new item called the vexillum. The vexillum can be placed in the ground at events to mark that clan’s territory. It can also be inspected to allow others to access essential clan information.

Clan Web Pages

Each clan will be given a personalized web page which will play host to a list of all clan members, high scores, stats and information about their clan. The clan web pages will also host public and private clan specific forums.

Rated Clan Wars

Rated Clan Wars, the new clan-specific gameplay content, is a redesigned version of the popular Clan Wars activity, allowing clans to challenge other clans to battle and be rated based on the outcome.

Dungeons and Dragons Expands, Rebalances Casters

DDO Update 9: New Quests and Rebalancing

Dungeon and Dragons Update 9 casts a light on a gruesome and twisted neighborhood of Stormreach! The Harbinger of Madness Adventure Pack commands you to gather evidence and uncover the sinister mastermind behind the disappearance of the Saltire District townspeople. This will take players down a twisted rabbit hole of detective work culminating in a gallery of human flesh and unholy cultists.

Dungeons and Dragons Update

Beyond the content expansion, Turbine has also put some focus into revamping their crafting system while giving players greater freedom over the user interface and armor effects. Minor tweaks have been made else where such as new attack animations and additional Prestige Enchancement lines.

But while some games would consider this enough, Dungeons and Dragons took it a step further and reworked spell points to give caster classes much needed viability for early game. They also improved endgame content by adding epic difficulty dungeons to test and reward the players that can take the fight to the toughest monsters DDO has to offer.

Now is a great time to check out all that is happening in the DDO Universe.

Be The BOSS with Business Tycoon Online

Be the BOSS with Business Tycoon Online

By: Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist

Business Tycoon Online is a browser based MMO that tackles the intricacies of the business world. As the title states, you are an enterprising “tycoon” who plans on starting your own empire in the virtual world of BTO.

Business Tycoon Online Review

As a business-centric game, I must say I am impressed with the depth the game goes to. It tackles the basic necessities a businessman needs to accomplish if he wants to have a thriving business. The game runs on a mix of real-time and game-time providing an interesting mix of urgency for dedicated players and casualness for the rest.

Business Tycoon Online Review

I actually like how the game was made since I myself am handling my own business. As a word of caution though playing BTO doesn’t mean you can handle a business of your own since this game is a game and can’t really give you enough to start your own business (I know I shouldn’t even state this out but people have done crazier things online). If it is any indication, this game does make you feel like you own your own start-up company, which is the game’s strength and its weakness.

Business Tycoon Online Review

BTO’s strength is its capability to immerse you in the world of Wall Street. You will be swamped with numbers, statistics and information on various business ventures you may want to invest in. You can also see how your current businesses are faring. The game also gives you the choice on where to put your business ventures throughout the city grid. Unlike in other games where location is just a random place put by the game engine, in BTO you are the one who would decide on where you want to establish your franchise ala a system reminiscent of building a city in Evony. Also, you are given the task of deciding where you want your factory set up; your products don’t materialize out of thin air or elf magic!

Business Tycoon Online Review

The downside to this is that BTO is not for everyone. If you’re the type of person who absolutely hates reading about business mumbo jumbo I suggest you back away from this game pronto. Being that BTO is a business game, you will definitely meet a lot of business terms and you have to process a lot of information if you want to have a good run in BTO. However, if you are the type of person that micromanages individual units in Starcraft, or cities in Civilization, then this game will reward you for your strategies.

Business Tycoon Online Review

BTO’s appeal is primarily reliant on your capacity to enjoy the business world (even if it’s just virtual) and your capacity to want to keep at it. All in all I can say that if you have a knack for creating conglomerates or you want to see how it feels, then BTO is a game for you. The game doesn’t fail in creating the immersive experience of a tycoon, however sometimes it feels too straining to even keep at it for so long. That is unless you refer to the cash shop for helpful items since, even in a virtual business world, the all mighty dollar still buys you power.

Urban Rivals: Bagpipes, Pillz, and Rock & Roll

Urban Rivals: Bagpipes, Pillz, and Rock & Roll

by Mitch Baylosis-Benesa (Syllica)

Urban Rivals is a browser-based trading card game set in a fictional world called Clint City, a place where dark figures stalk every dark alley. The card battle rules are simple and easy to follow, and animations are fluid and entertaining. The game can be easily accessed by logging on using your Facebook account or via iPhone, giving this game much more accessibility than most any other MMO on the market.

Urban Rivals Review

Edgy

Urban Rivals left me with high expectations upon seeing its edgy and eye-catching graphics. The game’s art is especially nice. It is unique and the art screams “urban” at first sight. The deck is not totally cartoony and some folks are downright creepy looking. The cards’ elements are properly laid out and formatted so it is easy to identify the name of your character, level, the attack and damage points, the logo of the character’s clan, and the card’s unique ability-all of which are pretty straightforward.

Urban Rivals Review

Urban Rivals presents simple yet engaging gameplay, plus other interesting elements. Each new player is given eight free characters. Each character belongs to a specific clan and if the player gets a character that belongs to the same clan during a battle, there is an appropriate buff for them. The clans-all 21 of them-carry witty and dark descriptions that further paint the urban reality of this game. Collecting characters of the same clan can grant advantages in battle that encourage themed gang decks. I was especially fond of the character evolution system that allows cards to comically evolve as they level up in battle.

It’s Time to Duel!

Fighting other players in Urban Rivals is totally random, which prevents match fixes within the game. Each player starts off with four cards, with a total of 12 Life Points. Each card carries a set number of Attack Points representing how much damage the card deals in battle. Damage Points represent how much damage the player receives from an attack; this damage can be magnified by activating Fury which automatically costs 3 Pillz, a special power-up item. These pills can also be used to grant additional power to a character card.

Urban Rivals Review

Leader cards represent the prime strength of your deck. These cards are characters that do not belong to any of the 21 clans and instead bring unique power-ups to cards placed around them. When used properly, they can really turn a fight into a one sided beat down.

At the end of the fourth round of combat, the duelist with the lowest remaining life points loses the match. The winner earns experience points so that your character cards can levels up, as well as battle points which can be used to improve your level as an Urban Rivals duelist. Reaching certain levels will earn you perks and advantages in battle. Unlocking higher levels allows you to gain access to more challenging opponents and worthwhile guilds.

Urban Rivals Review

Urban Rivals has daily tournaments for players who want to rise up the ladder of Clint City. Various match types are available for player versus player as well including ELO battles, deathmatches, and survivor modes. If you are still learning or wish to test out uncertain deck builds, there exists a practice mode that grants a smaller amount of experience than normal matches. Special story driven missions are also available to offer the full spectrum of MMO gaming modes.

Fate is in the Cards

Urban Rivals is focused in its gameplay and delivers what it promises, fast and furious card battle action. The game mechanics are simple, but it still provides enough nuances to create a challenging player versus player experience. The game is eye-catching, entertaining and has just the right amount of fun factor to make it a great game to play while taking a break from more traditional MMORPGs. The only real downside is the occasional slowdowns in battle response times that can really ruin the mood of an otherwise intense duel.

Pangya is hosting a slew of tournaments and events, including the Pangya Rally and Medal Race, to celebrate the anniversary. The Pangya Rally and Medal Race is available in-game now, and the tournaments will take place April 15, 2011 and April 22, 2011. These festivities begin just as SG Interactive is putting the finishing touches on a major Pangya update that will be revealed later this month.

Pangya Anniversary Preview

“Pangya has been one of our fastest-growing games.” said Chris Lee, SG Interactive CEO. “It’s hard to believe it’s already been two years since we introduced it to US players.”

The five players who individually gather the most Pangya Medals will win in-game points and one item of their choice from among the rarest in-game items of last year. All players will be able to exchange their medals for in-game items or as raffle tickets for a drawing to win an iPad 2 or Alienware laptop.

The Second Anniversary Tournament is scheduled for April 15, 2011 and April 22, 2011 and is open to the first 396 players to enter. Competing players will go through one qualifier game and one semi-final game on April 15, 2011. Ten finalists from each server will fight for the top three spots on April 22, 2010. Grand Prizes include rare game items, such as the Golden Duo Feather Club Set.
