Rift TV: The Road to a Golden Age

Rift TV: The Road to a Golden Age

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW) – OnRPG Journalist

It sneaks up on us from time to time. On an average Saturday after seeing a great movie, you and your friends go on a gaming binge. It gets mundane on its own after a while and your mind starts to wander. It wanders until it reaches a question older than the MMO genre itself.

‘Imagine if this game was a movie/live action show?’

Of course this is soon laughed off with multiple terrible examples of why not to go there. The Mario Brothers movie, Dwayne Johnson’s Doom, and Street Fighter to name a few.

Trion Rift SyFy

But as long as your inner child can fight off the pessimistic MMO gamer mindset, you just cannot help but imagine the possibilities this combination still holds if done right. Trion Worlds founder, Lars Buttler, believes he has the magic formula to finally make it a reality. He intends to form a television series that incorporates major events occurring within the Trion Rifts world into the weekly televised episode. Think of it as Riot Game’s League of Legends weekly ‘Journal of Justice’ being televised on a national cable television network. The first thought that came to my mind is “this has to be ludicrous fiction”.

Fiction Becomes Reality: The Partnership with SyFy

Lars Buttler has looked back on these movie failures and seen the core trend connecting one failure after another. The first and foremost problem with all these gaming based movies is compressing the large amount of content available in a 50+ hour content game into a 2 hour movie. He realizes the futility of this and has instead opted for a live action television series spanning multiple seasons to bring the gaming world in its fullest to the small screen.

Of course it would take a radical television network to take on such a strange and risky proposition. That is where NBC Universal’s recently reorganized SyFy Channel comes into play. SyFy, famous for its wildly unorthodox original series and Science Fiction B movies, has the in-house staff and technology to bring the alien races, fantastical creatures, and world destroying portals of Rift to life.

But do not expect this to be a bland thrown together project to pass for another month of content on the SyFy network. Dave Howe, president of SyFy Network, has been quoted calling this project “The Holy Grail.” Mr. Howe has put his money where his mouth is and pressed a rumored $25 million budget into making this series a reality.

Rifts Ahead: The Rocky Road to Reality

So Lars Buttler has the funds and the vision to make this show a resounding success. But can his team actually build the Holy Grail that Hollywood has failed to create for 20 years?

Trion Rift SyFy

To be blunt, it is doubtful. There are already rumors of culture clashes between the Trion Worlds team and SyFy writers about the creation of this combined world. On one side you have the game designers behind the monumental production of Rifts, dedicating themselves day and night towards perfecting a believable world that can capture the hearts and minds of thousands of players for an extended period of time. These men and women have an unwavering vision of what the Rift world is supposed to be and will attack like savage fan boys if you cross their pre-written rules of the Rift Universe.

On the other side of the spectrum are the screen writers and accountants of the SyFy Network. They have been trained to build a series around lead characters with the world and environment they live in coming in as a secondary function to help build upon these characters. These professionals are normally bound by the limitations of budget and the talent and degree of actors they can acquire to populate their televised world. Add to it the limitations brought on by being bound to the rules set by Trion’s game designers and NBC’s profit expectations, and you have enough pressure to form diamonds out of coal.

Trion Rift SyFy

This problem becomes even more troublesome when it comes to attracting your player base to this televised experiment. They will want to see a noticeable difference in the television show based on the changes in game. They will want to see how their organizations are impacting the series to be able to point and say, ‘Yes, that was us. We caused this.’

Now take into consideration the sheer impossibility that this can happen. Maybe if the entire Rift game was featured on one server with a small community base, you could provide such an experience. However, Rift’s immensely successful launch has resulted in 58 North American and 41 European servers (as of February 28), most of which remaining heavily populated at peak hours.

There is simply no feasible way more than a handful of players’ efforts can be featured to cause a noticeable difference in the weekly televised Rift series when presented with this scale. Though if done correctly, it may create room for community competitions and events tied in with the televised series. This is just one of the many tight ropes Trion and SyFy must walk in the coming months.

Gamer vs Geek: The Rift Gap

Beyond the technical points covered thus far. There is one grand issue to rule them all.

If you are a truly dedicated MMO player, you put a lot of time into your games. If you put a lot of time into your games, you will surely have less time for other things in your life.

Trion Rift SyFy

One of those time wasters is television. So this televised show would fall short of capturing the attention of the most hardcore gamers. Watch Rift on tv? I have gear to farm!

On the opposite spectrum, a less hardcore gamer is in most cases going to have less interest in the content provided by Rift. So when offered the chance to experience their part-time gaming hobby on television, the results are likely going to be less than stellar.

Even greater difficulties arise when luring in your average SyFy viewer to buffer the required audience enough to prevent an early cancellation. In this case you cannot just point at how successful the video game is and expect these geeky television watchers to instantly jump on the band wagon. If anything they will be skeptical. This does not come from a famous fiction writer. In the worst case scenario, it might even be labeled as a cheap advertising tie in and shunned by the community at large. Danger lurks on all horizons for Rift.

Trion Rift SyFy

The Light at the End of the Worm Hole

By now a dreary picture has been painted of the success for this wild Rift project. But still my inner child hopes beyond hope that this could be a success. In recent years many gamers have given up hope that a nearly flawless bug free MMO launch could exist. Trion Rift has come out strong and broken this preconception with the launch of their game. If there is any company I have faith in right now to break the norm and achieve the impossible, it is Trion.

The light at the end of the tunnel may be the simplest solution. What motivates MMO gamers in all things? Fatty loot and epic rewards! What happens when you hide a give-away code to unlock said fatty loot within the televised series of the show, and said fatty loot is more rewarding than an hour of grinding within the game? That’s right, so long as there is limited time to turn in this code, you will get an audience looking to find it. Now say Syfy hits the mark and the audience likes what they see? You just might get people tuning in regularly instead of searching Rift fansites to obtain that code. Especially if they make the obvious connection that gamers like to watch TV on the Internet, when their raid schedule permits it.

And you never know. This glorious union might catch a geek or two outside of the gaming realm who asks the question ‘This show is so cool. Imagine if it was a game?’

Battlefield Play4Free Preview – Dead on Arrival?

Battlefield Play4Free Preview – Dead on Arrival?

By Neil Kewn (Murxidon) – OnRPG Journalist

Electronic Arts is taking their renowned Battlefield series into the free-to-play arena for a second time later this year with Play4Free. Almost two years since Battlefield: Heroes brought us a more slapstick take on the series’ famed multiplayer military mayhem, this new iteration takes us back to the game’s roots. Play4Free returns to what made Battlefield great – two teams of soldiers doing their utmost best to obliterate each other with an assortment of powerful weaponry and vehicles. However, unlike their commercial counterparts, you won’t have to pay a dime to experience any of it.

In recent years Battlefield has taken a more realistic approach to warfare. The series has always taken their military hardware seriously, but the absence of the famed fighter jets and similarly expendable modes of transport in Bad Company 2 did not please everyone. Don’t get me wrong, Bad Company 2 was an excellent game in its own right, but we haven’t seen the ultimate vehicular carnage BF does so well for a couple of years now. Play4Free is set to change that, promising to include a variety of conveniently placed tanks, jeeps and aircraft.

Battlefield Play 4 Free Preview

There are four classes to choose from. The standard Assault class is equipped with a wide assortment of assault rifles and ammo packs; it’s their job to resupply the team with ammo when necessary. Similarly, medics aid the wounded whilst providing covering fire with a light machine gun. Engineers specialise in repairing and destroying vehicles on the field, whilst Recon is the class everyone loves to hate – the controversial band of snipers. Character creation is relatively basic at the moment. Picking a name, skin, hairstyle and class is all it takes to design your own mercenary. Each texture is more horrific than the last, but I doubt many consider facial appearance to be a priority in games such as this. First time downloads are relatively slow right now, but things are improving with each new patch.

Those who have played a multiplayer team-based first person shooter game before will feel right at home in Play4Free. The game feels very much like a Battlefield title – your soldier won’t be indestructible and you must make use of the available cover to survive. The interface is concise and unobtrusive, with helpful hints cropping up whenever interactions become available. As of now there isn’t a server list, only the ability to jump straight into a game or join one of your friends. Hopefully this will change upon release.

Electronic Arts insist that you can “Play4Free”, and on the whole that is correct. As things stand players are getting a tried and tested slice of Battlefield action for absolutely nothing. As with the majority of free online games, micro-transactions will eventually offer perks and upgrades for your soldier. Furthermore, playing the game earns credits that can be used to purchase items in the store. Credits can help you obtain high performance weaponry and other equipment for a set number of days, but you will need to buy “Battlefunds” in order to purchase anything you wish to keep indefinitely.

Battlefield Play 4 Free Preview

Right now, players are required to launch the game via Play4Free’s official website. The page also relays server, soldier and payment information – you can even create new soldiers. There is little reason that this couldn’t be incorporated into the client though, eliminating the need for this minor inconvenience. Once launched, the main menu displays your active soldier, their rank, weaponry and appearance. You have many options to customize their look and style, from new helmets and body armour, to uniforms and goggles.

Beta tag aside, playing an actual round can be a frustrating process. The client often outright refuses to join a session. Lag isn’t uncommon, practically removing any fun or playability from the game. Right now it wouldn’t surprise me if EA were merely stress testing, as such fundamental flaws do little to form solid multiplayer gaming. Strangely, the EA Store is already open. I can’t help but feel that those who do commit to testing Play4Free are expected to hand over cash to do their job properly, why aren’t cash shop items free in the beta?

Once in a while, it is possible to end up on a reliable server. There are only a couple of well-known maps available now, but the features implemented will be very familiar to fans of the series. The objective is to secure a number of bases on each map. The team with the most bases will slowly deplete the opposing team’s hold on the area, the first team to reach zero will forfeit the round. Running across the relatively large maps isn’t advised, so make use of the vehicles on offer. There are several implemented at the moment (jeeps, trucks and fighter jets to a few) and they vary by map. Teammates can hop on board to provide fire on the move or make use of the mounted weaponry the vehicle may have.

Battlefield Play 4 Free Preview

Play4Free incorporates the levelling elements found most popular FPS games, allowing your veteran to level up in experience and skills. Interestingly, points earned in the field can be used to customize and populate various “talent trees”. You may choose to become a skilled helicopter or fighter jet pilot, or improve your resiliency and usefulness on the battlefield. This element adds an interesting dynamic to the game, hopefully resulting in a wide and varied assortment of teammates skilled in a multitude of different areas. Hopefully this will go a long way in encouraging teamwork.

The game doesn’t have the graphical prowess of its predecessors. Built upon a modified version of Battlefield 2’s engine, EA are aiming to attract as many shooter fans as possible by keeping system requirements to a minimum. There are a few nice graphical effects here and there, and smoke does a great job at obscuring your view. Sound direction has always been a highlight of Battlefield, and Play4Free is no exception with its high-impact explosions, rifle shots and typically atmospheric environmental sounds.

It remains to be seen whether or not Play4Free captures the imagination of PC shooter fans. It has potential, but with the forthcoming release of Battlefield 3 it’s possible that the majority will skip this stripped down version. For those looking for a shooter to tide them over, the game offers a familiar FPS experience without cost. It looks good, sounds great and inherits the intense multiplayer warfare seen in other iterations of the series. It’s Battlefield at its most raw, only free.

Spiral Knights Preview – Old School Meets New School

Spiral Knights Preview – Old School Meets New School

By Michael Sagoe (mikedot), OnRPG journalist

Three Rings Design, the developers behind the popular Puzzle Pirates game, is joining forces with SEGA to bring out a brand new online adventure that mixes old school dungeon crawling with today’s MMO style gaming. Their newest title is called Spiral Knights and it looks to be a wicked mix between such classics as The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and with just a splish-splash of Bomberman.

Spiral Knights

The game has been in an ongoing preview event for the past couple of months and will soon be going live pretty soon, so I decided to form this little preview for everyone that wasn’t fortune enough to snag up an invite.

Starting out, there’s a moderately small but reasonable amount of customization available for you knight. With the multiple color schemes to choose from, you better make sure that you’re really comfortable with them, because your starting color scheme will determine the color scheme used for most of your armor sets in the future.

Spiral Knights

After customizing my knight, the game opens up telling me that I’ve crashed landed on a mysterious planet called Clockworks along with other knights and it’s up to us to explore the planet for whatever reason… From the moment you start playing, you might feel a sense of Deja Vu, since the game world is sporting some old school level design, most of which resembles something out of Nintendo’s 2D Legend of Zelda titles.

Strollin’ along from the crash site, you’ll be passing by a rescue camp, where you can learn more about the game through tutorial dungeons. The tutorial dungeons here are completely optional and can be played with others knights that are starting out just as you.

Spiral Knights

After the training camp, you’ll find yourself in Haven, a small refugee town filled with equipment shops, other fellow knights and little birds that fly around like helicopters.

Spiral Knights
Yeah! Copta peeps!

When I reached Haven, I wandered around for a bit, just taking in the sights and sounds, petting a few birdies and what not. I stumbled around to the back alleys of Haven and found the arcade where all the others knights hang out.

Spiral Knights

This is also where all the fun begins: There are several difference dungeon gates for knights to choose from and explore. Each gate is filled with several different floors and areas that switch up periodically, so your dungeon expeditions may not be the same run twice.

Decisions, decisions… I really didn’t know what gate I wanted check out, so I picked one at random and joined up with a random party. Inside, I was already forced in the middle of a heated battle against a bunch of pink blob monsters and bushy foxes. It took us awhile to take them all down, but it was no sweat.

Spiral Knights

Earlier, I mentioned that Spiral Knights also had a bit of FF: Crystal Chronicles in it. Well that was because of the light puzzle elements and mineral collecting available in each run. Solving puzzles in Spiral Knights mostly revolve around flipping trigger switches and laying down stones, but I’m pretty sure that more challenging puzzles will be faced in the deeper dungeons.

The mineral collecting is also what makes Spiral Knights unique. Knights are tasked with collecting different minerals to bring back to the surface. With them, knights can dump them into one of the inactive dungeon gates until they’re ready to open. These special gates will generate a dungeon based on the amount of each mineral put in, and the best part of mineral dumping is when you get paid in crowns (in-game currency) every time a player users these gates when they’re active, so knights are encouraged to collect minerals and deposit them often.

Spiral Knights

My team and I came across many different monsters on the way down, but some of my favorite ones were definitely the devilites. These monsters like to run around and throw office supplies at knights, and there’s also a big devilite called a Pit Boss that walks around just surveying the small devilities to make sure they’re not slacking off, which is not only funny but shows off some nice AI interaction.

Spiral Knights
After trudging through waves of goo, scales and fur, I managed to reach an eerie sub-town called “Moorcroft Manor”. The place had a nice haunted vibe going for it, with ghosts and skeletons and… you know… scary stuff.

Spiral Knights

After my team got situated a bit, the next dungeon we entered was an arena dungeon. These dungeons are considered to be the most challenging, but also the most rewarding dungeons in Spiral Knights. Stepping into the arena with you and your team will pit you against three or more waves of enemies in three trapped rooms, generally sporting different themes. Taking on the arena for me and my team was no easy task, but we managed to survive the waves and the rewards were plenty.

Spiral Knights

From here, I wanted to go deeper into Clockworks and see what was lurking, but there was one small problem: I ran out of energy! Yes, Spiral Knights uses a system that is quite similar to fatigue systems in other action MMOs like Dungeon Fighter Online, but with a catch: Energy is used for many different things in Spiral Knights, from activating elevators to crafting equipment. While you get a small amount of free energy that recharges over time (called mist energy), you can either shell out a couple of bucks or exchange a hefty amount of your crowns for some crystal energy. While I’m not too fond of exchange rates for trading crowns to crystals, it is good to know that players are free to enjoy Spiral Knights by either spending time or money.

Heading back to the surface, it didn’t seem like there was much left to do except wait for my mist energy to recharge, but then I noticed the coliseum terminal in the Arcade.

The coliseum is Spiral Knights’ extra game mode that lets you battle against other players at no cost to your energy. There are several different tiers you can participate in based on your equipment, but if you’re daring enough, you can participate in the ultimate brawl tier which has no equipment restrictions, so anything goes!

Spiral Knights

Overall, Spiral Knights is shaping up to be one hell of a fun adventure title, and the fact that Spiral Knights is a browser title means that it can be played on almost any PC.

Spiral Knights is set to launch on April 4th, 2011. Check out our Spiral Knights profile page for more info and be on the lookout for a full review in the coming weeks.

APB: Reloaded Much More Than A Simple Relaunch!

APB: Reloaded Much More Than A Simple Relaunch!

By Nic van ‘t Schip, OnRPG Admin

Back in November of last year we broke the news that APB was making a comeback under the capable wings of GamersFirst. Today at the, Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, we have seen that this is NOT vaporware.

APB is back under the great name APB: Reloaded and GamersFirst is doing some fantastic work the core mechanics of the game, which means They’ll only bring APB back, but they’ll bring it back a much better game than before!

Driving Overhaul
The driving got a complete overhaul. Not only the core driving physics were reworked to feel much more genuine (and, let’s just say it, more like GTA), but GamersFirst also completely remade the starting vehicles from scratch.
The way Realtime Worlds envisioned the driving, was that gamers would progress through the game and get their hands on increasingly better handling cars. The result of this was that most people’s first impression of the game was that the driving was horrible, simply because the first car, they were given to drive was shit.

APB: Reloaded Driving has been completely revamped!

The new starting vehicle handles much better turning driving into a real skill game. There is of course still room for progression as cars you get access to later in the game will still have better acceleration and top speed. Tully, who reviewed APB for us back in July was able to drive around with the new starting car and he confirmed that the driving experience has completely changed. After a couple of failed attempts he was soon drifting the car around corners and he felt he a lot more control of what his car did.

Shooting Overhaul
The other core mechanic of the game, the shooting, wasn’t forgotten either. With the highly successful MMOFPS War Rock, GamersFirst has already proven they know their way around an FPS. This experienced is helping them greatly with the complete revamp of the weapons as well as the underlying mechanic of shooting stuff in APB.

The recoil caused quite some controversy in APB’s first iteration, fortunately this has been much improved. Producer Jon-Enée Merriex said: “We’ve reworked the weapons, shooting physics and recoil system to make it more attractive to fire in short bursts as we wanted to get APB away from the spray and pray mentality.”
Some of the changes include increased damage from bullets. This time around when you get hit you’re going to feel it! Weapon types will also play a bigger role, and weapons are no longer effectively different skins with the same effect.

Character Progression
In the previous version of APB, character progression was convoluted at best and GamersFirst is looking at completely redoing it. It will be simplified and there will be a lot more information accessible about what to expect from missions in terms of difficulty, as well as rewards. Some other improvements like improved information in tooltips will really help make progressing through the game a lot easier.

APB: Reloaded is reworking character progression completely

Roles have been reworked and will now be your direct path to unlock access to different kinds of weapons. Achievements will no longer grant rewards and it’s much clearer what you need to do to unlock them. Down the line titles may be unlocked by achievements but for now they’re purely there for bragging rights.

Other mechanics that GamersFirst is looking at is an improved Turfwars system, a revamp of the spawning system, proper races and even a brand new zone “The Asylum”.

Free to Play!

Perhaps the most important change is that APB is going fully Free to Play! GamersFirst are an F2P company at heart and have many successful games in their lineup to prove that they “get this”. As such APB will be truly free to play. There will be a cash shop that will sell vanity items as well as different guns. Jon-Enée made it really clear however that this doesn’t mean people can “buy better weapons”. Instead the store will have different variations of weapons but none of these will be designed to be “better” than the guns that are freely available, just different.

There will also be a Premium account option which gives access to more layers for designs, higher % chances of getting unique designs to drop etc. While the final cost of the premium accounts have not been determined yet the non surprising amount of “9.95ish” was mentioned.

Former APB Players : Rejoice!
We had one tough question left for the GamersFirst team: What about the thousands of players that felt robbed the first time they invested in APB only to see it shut down a mere three months after it launched? Producer Jon-Enée Merriex smiled and answered: “We are ready and committed to welcome these players back with open arms. There WILL be character transfers and players WILL get their names, avatars and designs back. Because cars and weapons have been completely overhauled we will not be restoring them but the essence of their characters WILL be restored to their former glory!”

And in addition to this, Jon-Enée mentioned that they will soon announce an “olive branch” that will be offered to all former APB players, one that they are sure will excite them!

Unfortunately, this was as much as we could get them to commit to at this stage. but all in all it’s a very satisfying answer further confirming that APB is in very good hands with GamersFirst!

We’ll soon have a proper re-review up for APB: Reloaded so watch this space!
