GDC Update: UTV True Games Shows Us Faxion

GDC Update: UTV True Games Shows Us Faxion

GDC is in full swing and so it’s time for the various publishers to show off their wares. This morning we met with the UTV True Games team to get sneak peaks into some of the very promising games they’re working on.

Faxion is the first game we had a peak at, this Heaven vs Hell game has a very fresh and crisp look and UTV True Games Studio Head Frank Lucero was able to give us some interesting scoops:

Some of the feedback UTV got during the beta was that it was hard for people to notice when certain events would take place. For example if the enemy had a nasty crit on you or when your character was stunned or confused. In reaction UTV True Games is currently working on a system where the entire UI will work to inform you of these various events. When you get critted the screen will flash red, when you get rooted the bottom half of the screen will get overgrown with vines and when you get a confusion spell cast upon your character the screen may even flip upside down! We didn’t see any of these things but if they pull that off it could be pretty cool!

Faxion - Hell Hath Frozen Over!

Another interesting thing they’re working on is the tweaks to the high ground advantage. People didn’t notice it enough before so now the game will tell you when you are getting extra damage from for example the High Ground bonus.

The last thing I want to mention is the offline training. UTV have somehow managed to genetically combine the EVE Online skill system with a standard Skill Tree system so your character will be able to continue improving while you are not logged into the game. We wonder how that will work out!

In terms of monetisation UTV True Games has confirmed to us that every single item that is for sale in the cash shop can also be obtained 100% for free by playing the game. Some of them will be very rare and difficult to get but in theory a player would never have to spend a single penny to get the best gear in the game.

Another way they’re going to earn money from the game is by offering additional bagslots and character slots via the cash shop.

It’s very obvious UTV is very commmunity focused. Rather than spending time and effort on features that they are not sure the players will enjoy they plan on releasing the game in a playable but somewhat unfinished state. Then, depending on feedback from the players, they will continue to develop the features that the community wants the most.

Perhaps the most surprising news to come out of our meeting was that they plan on going live with game (“Soft launch”) in the next 30 to 60 days!

Learn a Spell or Two with Wizard101

Learn a Spell or Two with Wizard101

by Mitch Baylosis-Benesa (Syllica)

Wizard101 is a browser-based game chockfull of magical surprises. First off, this game did not scrimp on presentation with its vivid introductory trailer upon clicking new wizard at the start. It tells the story of their wizarding world Spiral and the evil magic casters and his evil forces have started to use magic for bad deeds. Nothing original, but it helps that the plot is not the complicated since this game is intended for the young ones. What captured my interest further is the voice over since very few developers add this factor to browser-based games.

Say My Name

In the beginning, your choice of a name is rather limited since you can only choose from among what is presented to you. However, this is quite fun as the random name can provide you some of the cool-sounding combinations from the list. They will then give you a short series of test to determine your type of magic: Fire, Ice, Storm, Myth, Life, Death and Balance. Each school of magic has a particular strength. Pyromancers are adept with Fire, Thaurmaturges use Ice, Diviners call forth the power of Storm, Conjurers summons their allies to aid them in battle, Theurgists practice healing magic, Necromancers use Death Magic while Sorcerers have begun using the balanced type of magic ideal for PvP. This is pretty unique, I must say; some lets you summon, some are elemental, while others are a mix. If you didn’t like the results, you can change it to your preferred school later on. All of these are still consistently done with some 3D videos and voice overs.

Say My Name

Throw the Gauntlet Not

With kids in mind as players, the game will give a mini battle tutorial before launching you into the game. Fighting monsters in Wizard101 is much like old school console RPGs, save for the random encounters. Duels, as they call it, is turn-based and each spell you cast has an appropriate combat animation. You choose your spells from your deck of cards. Spells are not primarily limited to what your school of magic is. Even if you are, for example, under the Myth School of Magic, you may also have other spell types from Storm or Ice for a cost of Training Points. Training Points are earned every other 4-5 levels until you reach 50. The difference is that all spells under your school of magic is free of training cost, while other magic will cost you points. If you happen to notice that you wrongly allocated some points, you can have it reset by an NPC for an in-game currency cost (Crowns). If you find yourself lacking the points you need for other spells, some quests are available that will reward you with additional training points.

PvP

Questing is fun. The map is peppered with details of the important NPCs and location of buildings. If you tire some solo questing, Wizard101 also offer instances or dungeons and I can imagine this as a cool family adventure. Great rewards can be received from this, of course, but for an even greater challenge, you can try out the Gauntlet. It is another type of dungeon that is more unforgiving than regular instances since if you have unfortunately died during the battle or accidentally exited from the location, you have to redo the whole Gauntlet quest even if you are almost done with it. You need to trigger or find the appropriate quest for this to be available to you.

Wizard101 Minigames

As you progress into the game, the animation may get tiring and you may just want to move on from the fight, but don’t fret; there is an option to turn it off. However, do note that it may get interesting once again when you get a new card. And building decks is part of the fun (and frustration?) in Wizard101. Understanding the best combinations of schools of magic could be one of the great challenges that Wizard101 has to offer. I’ll take something difficult to master over a no-brainer skill rotation any other day.

Early Responsibilities

The activities within Wizard101 may be a good training ground for kids to learn about being professional. The game is also with other sorts of activities like pet training, Crafting and Gardening. Pets give you additional stats like additional health or mana, and you can start training pet bloodline if you want. Crafting allows you to create valuable objects that you can either use for yourself or for your house. You can also vend some. Taking up Gardening will yield you the some of the reagents you need for Crafting. To start these activities, you need to find the appropriate person to train you. It is bound to be costly and needs your attention-from preparing a land, getting seedlings, and harvesting what you have sown. Ranked and rated PvP is also available in the game from solo to 4vs4, although like much of the online games that are not purely PvP in orientation, the game is still in the process of tweaking and balancing classes.

Wizard101 Review

Awesome Presh

Wizard101 has a lot of useful tips to guide you along the way-from accessible noted tutorials, to voice overs of characters who guide you as a newbie. Earning gold and healing oneself is also interesting. You can go to the Fairground, play the minigames, and get health or mana rewards, as well as the in-game currency.

Wizard101 Dueling

Overall, I have to say that Wizard101 is somewhat refreshing. Sure, most of the elements that it has employed has been used already (and quite often at that). However, it’s all about the game’s presentation and fantastic soundtrack that did the trick. They infused it with humor that could appeal to both the kids and the parents (and quarter-aged players like me). Wizard101 is like Jimmy Neutron in a very lighthearted Harry Potter world: all 3D cartoony from character designs to fonts, but it still surrounds you with that epic magical feeling of being a dignified spellcaster. One will no doubt have a swell time building a deck of spells a la Magic the Gathering.

Pros:

– It is as kid-friendly as intended

– Fantastic voiceover and soundtrack

Cons:

– PvP is still weak
– Deck building may seem to be a tad bit difficult for kids to fully understand

Review: Experience Battlestar Galatica Like You Never Experienced Before

Review: Experience Battlestar Galatica Like You Never Experienced Before

By Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist

Battlestar Galactica Side MMO

Battlestar Galactica Online is a 3D Browser-based MMO. As the name suggests, the game puts you smack dab in the middle of the Cyclon-human war in control of either a Raider or a viper, depending on your choice of race.

The game does away with any preamble regarding the establishment of the game’s context and puts you in the cockpit of either a raider or a viper. The first few steps into the world of Battlestar Galactica Online double as your tutorial. This also serves as the make and break period for the game. I’m saying this because whatever impression you will have in the game once you start playing will practically set your continuous BSG play. The gameplay doesn’t change once you go into BSGO. What changes though is the perspective since you will be going out of your fighter once in a while.

Battlestar Galactica MMO Shoot

BSG is a good example of how far browser games have gone. For those who are new to the idea of a 3D MMO will surely get their heads blow off because BSG just looks spectacular, for a browser game. For those who aren’t new to browser based 3D MMOs, BSGO looks definitely better than the other games of the same type. The game looks soo good that I think BSGO would be better off if it was a client-based game rather than being a browser one.

One of the many limitations of the game on the browser platform is that the controls can be very hard to get used to. Most of the ship controls are on the mouse which serves as your fighter’s throttle. The fighters in the game move clunky and awkwardly since you still have to upgrade its parts to make it fly smoother. For a guy who got used to ships/fighters who turns smoothly even if the ship has no upgrades whatsoever, this was pretty taxing. Also it quickly shattered my image of raiders and vipers flying smoothly in space on the TV series.

Battlestar Galactica MMO Ship

As you keep on playing BSGO, you’d slowly realize that it’s not the BSG you used to watch on the tube. It’s a whole different universe compared to the TV series and this time around, it’s YOUR story in that is being told. Or, at least as much of a story as you can get out of the BSGO.

Battlestar Galactica MMO Combat

I just need to clarify though that BSGO isn’t just a browser game plastered with the title BSG without respecting the material it was lifted from. You’d see familar faces in the series (which are integral characters in the BSG story) that you’d interface with. Examples are interactions with number six and number one for the Cyclons and connecting with Starbuck in the human side. These little tidbits would really excite BSG fans but not those who aren’t familiar with the BSG mythos.

Cylon Ship

All in all, BSGO is a fun browser game to play regardless of any familiarity to the BSG story. As a browser based game it really brings the oomp to the 3D MMO browser game genre. However the less than smooth controls and some persistent bugs has kept me from gushing over it. Still, the game is on its early stages so maybe in due time it’d be better.

Champions of the World? – A Look at Champs Free to Play Side

Champions of the World? – A Look at Champs Free to Play Side

By Stephen Boyd, OnRPG Journalist

It was a dark and stormy night when the call came in from LA.

“Hey kid. The suits upstairs have been impressed by your work in Metropolis and Gotham. They want you to look into the goings on down in Millennium City now.”

Last thing I wanted was to be up my neck in caped freaks again, but hey, a job’s a job right?

“OK, Boss.” I said. “What’s the skinny on the situation down there? I heard the last guy you sent down there went native.”

The line went quiet and I could almost hear him shudder. “Yeah, I won’t lie to you. We lost a lot of good guys down there. Maybe you should wear some kind of disguise. Ya know…..try to blend in.”

And now, here I am. Slap bang in the middle of Champions Online. Having never tried the game before, and with covering DC Universe Online for the last month or so, I figured it would be a good idea to try Champs for comparison. And since Cryptic and Atari went Free to Play with it last month, I figured now was as good a time as any.

Champions Online Free for All

Champions Online: Free For All went into beta in November of last year and was released in its current iteration on January 25th of this year.

In his press release in January, CEO of Cryptic Studios, John Needham said
“We are thrilled to be able to launch Champions Online: Free For All. The Champions team has put an incredible amount of effort into making Free For All an amazing free-to-play MMO every gamer can enjoy at no cost.”

Coming so hot on the heels of the release of DCUO, many saw this jump to F2P as a panicked move from Atari and Cryptic. It was time to give it a run and see how it measures up against its competition.

One quick registration later and the F2P client was downloading. The client took around 24 hours to pull down from the official download site. The installation was smooth and a quick patch later it was time to craft a hero.

Champions Create

Since I started covering DCUO, I’ve heard a lot about the character creator in Champions Online and how it was much more option filled than its new rival. And this is certainly the case. The volume of creation options is immense; however a lot of the options are disabled in Champs FFA and available as paid content.

You start off by choosing your Archetype.

Champions Archtype

These run the standards of Tank in the form of the Behemoth and Glacier, through Melee and Ranged to Healers, here psychic and sorcerous The Mind and The Grimoire, respectively. There are three locked Archetypes, available as Micro Transaction upgrades.

Your Archetype also sets your Power Choices. I would have liked to see a little more variety in the power mixes myself, the Archetypes (and I do know what that word means, before the flaming begins!) felt a little generic to me. In the ‘Gold Member’ version of the game you can customise your powers.

And then the costume design. There is a staggering amount of looks to try in this game.

Champions Online Costume Time

You can randomly select a look or build yourself from the ground up. Each element of your costumes has dozens of variants. Although, each new menu I pulled up showed a lot of Locked creation items that can, you guessed it, be bought or are included in the P2P version.

Options Costumes

Even with these locked items, the variety offered in Champions Online: Free For All is amazing. Even the randoms above here all have a great individual look and, once you enter the game world, this becomes even more apparent.

The controls are as expected. WASD for movement, mouse for selecting and aiming. Tab to target. It felt familiar to my fingers as soon as I got into the action. And there is s a lot to do in the starting zone of Millennium City. Quests pop constantly, but you never become swamped and readily level up.

Champions Online Combat

New gear and Resources, the currency of the game, drop freely from mobs and the combat, although a little repetitive at this early level, is satisfying.

The starting zone was swamped with players and gave a nice populated fell to the city.
The only drawback to this was the fact that it took me ages to finish missions as other players killed *ahem* ‘MY’ mobs. Even with this impediment of other players in my new MMO ?, I struggled on.

The first major instanced battle came when I entered the Champions headquarters in an attempt to defeat the Qularr invasion. Luckily, Defender, leader of the Champions is on hand to dispense advice. If not really assist in the battle at all. One Boss fight later and a little clean up and you are taken to meet the Champions through an Honour Guard of Millennium City’s finest.

Champions Online Group Shot

Once this first instance has finished, you are introduced to vendors and the Powerhouse. Here you will train your hero in new skills, techniques or spells. Alongside these are your R&D options. Each role can choose an R&D path to follow and can research items from their inventory to split into components that can then be used to craft new items.

Champions Online: Free For All is a fine game. There are no major flaws to complain of barring a few scenery bugs where I got caught on nothing. The combat is enjoyable and I could see the crafting elements of R&D being a major time sink. The Movement abilities, of which I tried both Flight and Acrobatics, did not feel right. Flight was slow and so very ungraceful. Acrobatics left me stuck on plants and rubble scattered around the zone.

My major gripe with this game, and I can understand entirely why this feature is in game, is the constant feeling that you are missing out on something. Every vendor you visit you will see wares that you cannot buy. Every loading screen carries ads for Golden Membership and Micro Payment items.

Playing this game as a Free to Play or Silver member kinda leaves you feeling like a second class citizen.

If you can get past this, are unwilling or unable to purchase a subscription and can deal with the last generation visuals on display then Champions Online: Free For All should make you feel like a hero. For Free.

GDC: Valve Announces Steam Is Coming To TV!

GDC: Valve Announces Steam Is Coming To TV!

The first day of GDC has started with an interesting and unexpected announcement by Valve. With steam they already own the digital downloads market on the PC but this isn’t enough for them. Valve has annouced a “big picture” mode, a controller-friendly version of Steam built for playing on televisions.

“Our partners and customers have asked us to make Steam available in more places. With the introduction of Steam on the Mac, and soon in Portal 2 on the PS3, we’ve done just that,” said VP of marketing, Doug Lombardi. “With big picture mode, gaming opportunities for Steam partners and customers become possible via PCs and Macs on any TV or computer display in the house.”

This could instantly make Steam a contender for in the console market. Why bother with consoles if your entire Steam library is playable on your tv?

Valve will be annoucing more details on this new product during GDC and we’ll update you as soon as we find out more.

EverQuests Age of Rediscovery: First Impressions (Again)

EverQuests Age of Rediscovery: First Impressions (Again)

Fippy Darkpaw and Vulak’Aerr are a week old now. And while I admit I’ve not spent as much time playing as I would like there have been good reasons for it! All of my allotted Everquest time has been going towards reading guides and finding out information. But I’ll go into that a bit more later. What have I done so far on Fippy? Well, I rolled myself up a Wood Elf which as it so happens was the first race I ever played back in the day and was easily my favorite. I’ve run around the newbie area and enjoyed the city in the trees. I’ve fallen out of the city several times. But then who doesn’t? So after having played around a bit what are my first (re)impressions.

Character Creation

The very first thing I noticed about Everquest was the music. Epic, upbeat and appropriately fantasyish. It plays throughout the character creation process. Which, if you take any amount of time at all to create your character it can start getting a little annoying only because it repeats so often. So how does the actual character creation rate? For what it was at it’s time I would give it a 10 out of 10. You get a variety of faces, you can change a character’s stats. There seem to be a lot more options for customization but they were greyed out. I can only assume this is due to where we are in the progression. After the difficult process of picking a name (Is there really any game out there where picking a name isn’t hard?) I hit the button to enter the world.

EverQuest Character Creation

Nostalgia

Before the graphics had even finished loading the music started up and I was taken back. Once I found myself standing in that wonderful city the nostalgia hit me. I can’t remember how many times I saw that same sight. The brown blur of walls, the music, all that was missing was a smell and I might as well of been back in 1999. When I stepped outside of that little hut my Wood Elf started in I looked around. It was all exactly as I remember it. Only it looked more beautiful back then. Now, its outdated and blocky. Of course Everquest hasn’t changed, I have. It may not look as good as some of the other games out there. But it is perfect the way it is. After I finished reminiscing I decided it was time to set out.

EverQuest Nostalgia

First Combat

The first combat didn’t come until after I got lost in the city looking for a lift down. And had a fall, discovered the map which to be honest I can’t remember if it was there before or not. I don’t remember there being a map. But it may have always been there and I just didn’t know. Eventually I found my way out to the newbie area. There were far more people there than I cared for. But eventually I settled on my first target, a giant wasp. I’ve heard many people who never played Everquest shocked by the fact that the things you fight have such simplistic names name Rat or Giant Wasp. I enjoy it. It gives you a sense that it is a simple world. A wolf is just a wolf, a rat just a rat. Whoever wrote the combat music did a very good job. I can feel myself tense when the music starts. It makes the fight feel more frantic, more life and death. My first combat related death came while I was killing a bat. I didn’t see the Orc wander up behind me. And before I knew it I was down. I kept going back for more.

Everquest Combat

Crafting

I decided that my little outfit which is really nothing more than a swimsuit needed a bit more. So I decided I wanted to make a cape. I found the right person to buy the recipe from. But then there was the trouble of figuring out where to use it. Or even how to read it. Did I need to be a certain level before I could use it? The frustration just continued to build until I decided to go back to fighting.

Frustrations

It wasn’t long before I realized that I had no idea how to track what level I was. Or even where to level up. I spent several days reading guides and other things. It makes me wonder if this would prevent a casual player from continuing onward. I never stopped before. But then I don’t remember anything about levelling either. I eventually found a bar in my character screen that is tracking my level. Now the only question is if I have to find someone to go to for level two or if it just happens automatically.

It might seem like I have no idea what I’m doing. And to be honestly, I really don’t. But that is all part of the process. Rediscovering what I’ve been away from for so long and trying to relearn how to play a game so old. There’s no arrow over someone’s head saying talk to me. There’s no easy way to do things. You have to talk to everyone, try everything. I’m not going to give up. I’m going to keep trying, keep learning. Its been a great journey so far. And I’ve barely started. I can’t wait to continue my exploration.

Eudemons Pets - Not just pretty faces!

A wide range of choices

Composing is the best way to improve every quality of your Eudemons, and it’s also an important part of Eudemons Online. There are altogether 8 ways to Eudemon Composing. Sacrifice is inevitable while composing. Five common ways of composing are Main Attribute, Sub-Attribute, Initial-Attribute, Luck, and ID Composing. You need to check the detailed information of your Eudemons beforehand, to compose smartly and efficiently. Good composing will certainly make your Eudemons grow fast and efficiently.

Three special ways of composing joined afterwards, as every hero in Cronus is so eager to have the most distinguished Eudemons. Different kind of composing will improve different qualities of your Eudemons. Apart from the composing, your Eudemons will have to go through Evolutions to be fully grown.

Evolution
All Eudemons will go through two holy evolutions, one at Level 20 and the other at Level 40. Every evolution might bring your Eudemon a new look and more power!

After the second evolution, a unique ID will be given to the Eudemon, to make it stand out from other ordinary Eudemons. What’s more beneficial is that your Eudemons may randomly get special talents, such as a Town Gift, Repair Gift, and Identify Gift. And it may even turn into the strongest race, Thunder! Eudemons are your formidable weapons, and Converging is the best way to make full use of these weapons.

Converging

Converging makes you realize that the most loyal friends are your Eudemons. They sacrifice their lives for you, and will never betray you. In order to fight against various monsters, you will have to consider the most effective way to converge with your Eudemons.

Warrior Eudemons are perfect guards for Mages. While converged with them, their superior attack and defense power will be added to your character. They help you bring up the ultimate energy in you, and protect you till death! Meanwhile, Warriors can use Mage Eudemons to fight from a long distance, and thus get extra M-def and M-atk power!

Besides the great pet system mentioned above, Eudemons Online has a splendid PvP system, with 5 modes to PK in. There is a massive community system, reminding you of love, friendship and brotherhood. All kinds of fun and rewarding events are available every week. Eudemons Online has kept on, and will always keep on, surprising you with fresh and new stories!

Zu Online: Cull the Golden Ox Demons

Zu Online: Cull the Golden Ox Demons

Whether you’re a fan of its engaging PvP battles or the beauty of its flash-rendered graphics, the world of Zu Online is anything but peaceful. The latest threat to vex Zu’s brave adventurers is a horde of Golden Ox Demons that have overrun Thunder Peak.

The decade-long war between the Immortals and the Demons still casts a shadow over Zu’s inhabitants and heroes alike. Hidden devils walk among its people in human form, spreading cruelty and craving blood wherever they go. An invasion of Golden Ox Demons only makes an already dangerous situation even more deadly.

Zu Online: Cull the Demon!

The Telepath Envoy has learned that the evil Golden Ox Demons recently barged into Thunder Peak and stole the Silver Stones. Though the Envoy’s power is great, it is no match for so many of these creatures. He has sent out a call for help, seeking higher-level champions to cull the Golden Ox Demons in Thunder Peak and recover the Silver Stones.

Beginning March 1st, the event will be available to all eligible characters each day from noon to 2:00 PM and from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM EST (GMT-5). Recover the precious Silver Stones to earn incredible silver stone gifts, as well as the Telepath Envoy’s eternal gratitude.
