Jagex Announces 8 Realms – The future of empire-building strategy games

Jagex Games Studio today announced that the closed beta for 8Realms, the new social empire-building strategy game, will launch on 5th May 2011.

In 8Realms players grow their empires from humble village to glorious dominions through eight ages of history. As players develop their settlement they will vie with others for control of precious resources, defend their interests against vicious hordes and research new technologies to ultimately reign supreme.

“8 Realms has been developed from the ground up to appeal to players with a passion for strategy gaming but who have been left underwhelmed by the social games available today,” said Mark Gerhard, CEO at Jagex. “With 8 Realms we saw a massive opportunity to push the technological boundaries of HTML games. Jagex has traditionally been an innovator in browser gaming and we saw this as our chance to bring a fresh perspective to the social space and the empire-building genre.”

8Realms will be available to play for free on any internet capable device, in any web browser, allowing anyone with a computer, netbook, tablet or smartphone to become masters of their empire wherever they are. 8 Realms is set to break new ground for Jagex as their first fully HTML game, accessible on any device without the need for plug-ins such as Java or flash.

For a chance to be selected for the beta, players simply need to ‘like’ the 8Realms Facebook page. Regular developer blogs, sneak previews and Q&A’s are also available on the Facebook page and the 8Realms website.

Shakes and Fidget First Impressions: Shake, Rattle and Roll the Dice

Shakes and Fidget First Impressions: Shake, Rattle and Roll the Dice

By Stephen Boyd, OnRPG Journalist

Shakes and Fidget is a curious beast. Firstly, I have absolutely no idea where the name of the game comes from OR what it means, but it is kinda fun. German developer Playa Games has crafted a quirky and addictive turn based combat browser game.

You create your character using either the random roll selection or can use the selection tools to create a unique look that comes in an appealing, almost Plants vs Zombies art style. As a lifelong cartoonophile, I really like the look of this game.

From here, you choose your class. You have the holy triumvirate of RPGs to choose from, Warrior, Mage or Archer. Once this has been done and you have chosen your name, it’s time to leap into the fray.

Shakes and Fidget Character create

On entering the game world, you will see a sidebar of choices containing mission types and vendors. The Tavern is your one stop shop for picking up quests. The quest givers generally have three or four quests and each journey will reward you with a combination of money, XP or items in varying degrees. Money in Shakes and Fidget comes in two flavours; Gold and Mushrooms. Gold is used to buy armour and weapons, mushrooms are your special currency and are used for mounts and higher tier gear. The Mushrooms can be earned through questing or bought using the usual Micro transaction methods.

Shakes Combat

Each mission is also timed, meaning once you select it you must let the timer tick down before you can fight. You can skip the timer by using your Mushrooms, and that would be were those MTs come into play.

Shakes Quest

Each quest will also remove a portion of your ‘Thirst for Adventure’ meter. Once this meter runs out, you are done for the day. The meter can be topped up by purchasing a beer from the innkeeper in the tavern to allow you to keep questing.

In a half hour of playing the game I raised my character, the ace archer Shooty Steve to Level 6, so progression is quite quick, at least in the early stages of the game.
An alternative to questing is to enter the arena. Here you pit your character against other players to earn gold and XP. The combat is fairly evenly tiered and I did not face anyone more than two levels away from my character. One sorceress I battled two shotted me at the same level, but other than that the battles were fairly evenly matched although my Lucky Rabbit’s Foot Amulet allowed me to block a lot of incoming attacks, leaving me undefeated for the evening, which was nice!

Shakes Monkey Killing

Once your questing and arena fighting is done for the day, you can take a job from the City Guard. Working for them means you cannot quest or fight in the Arena, but they pay handsomely and that wage can be used to upgrade your gear in the morning.
Turn based combat normally turns me off, but something about this game made me want to come back for more. The art style is fun and the missions are rewarding. So why not give it a shake and see what you think?

Pocket Legends Review – The New Way To Sit Through Meetings

Pocket Legends Review – The New Way To Sit Through Meetings

Neil Kewn (Murxidon) – OnRPG Journalist

Providing you haven’t been living under a rock for the past three years, you may have heard something about one company and their range of mobile devices. Whatever you may think about Apple’s minimalist approach to product design and somewhat random pricing decisions, there’s no denying that the iPhone, iPod Touch and now iPad have revolutionised mobile computing. The App Store has become a cash cow for thirsty developers to milk to their heart’s content. And with millions of people all around the world holding an iOS product in their pocket, it was only a matter of time before someone had a shot at replicating the resounding success of desktop MMORPGs on your Apple phone.

Pocket Legends is one of the first attempts at giving those people who have the unfortunate commitments of work, school or a social life a bit of 3D online gaming on the go. Developed by Spacetime Studios, Legends is free to download from the App Store and is compatible with any iOS device. Set in the world of Alterra, Legends offers a decently sized slice of online role playing from the comfort (or discomfort, depending on how you hold it) of your phone.

Starting Out

Upon first launch of Pocket Legends, you are tasked with the simple account registration process. Nothing too taxing here, and you don’t need to register a credit card to play. You must validate your account by way of a verification e-mail, otherwise it is deleted after 24 hours (it’s advisable to do this as soon as possible, as one reviewer woke up to find his pocket adventurer nowhere to be seen). From there, the realm selection screen displays the only available server, which usually has a population of around 250 to 500.

In Legends, there are three classes to choose from. A noble bird-like archer, the mystical elven enchantress and the Ursan warrior bears. And that’s it. Pick your class, type in your name and you’re done. If you were looking to kit out your character with flashy haircuts and face paint, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.

Different, but it works

Now, you would probably expect to be taken to the world of Alterra, where you can begin your online adventure in a large world filled with a couple of hundred other players, right? Well, Pocket Legends takes a slightly different approach to the classic thesis adhered to by most desktop MMORPGs . The majority of the game is instanced. Players can create their own “games” that other players can jump in to at any time. Instead of a fully realised world brimming with pixelated pocket delights, Alterra is divided up into campaigns. Each campaign features a number of levels, which each take several minutes to complete. Currently, only the “Forest Haven” campaign is available for free players, with a healthy 15 levels to trudge through.

The Ye Olde Towne acts as the social hub of the game. A safe zone, where players can meet up, chat, trade and go about their daily business. The Towne is usually bursting with players, giving you plenty of opportunities to swap your spoils for gold.

Gameplay

Once you have entered a campaign, a short loading screen takes you to something quite striking. A fully 3D MMORPG on your iPhone. Most of what you would find on your desktop is now in your hand. A chat system, friends lists, trade, private messaging, parties, stores and even PvP have all found their way into Pocket Legends in one fashion or another. Like many other iOS games, movement is controlled via a virtual thumbstick situated on the bottom left of the screen. your current attack button is on the right. As you level your character, new abilities become available and are situated above your current attack button.

Pocket Legends Gameplay

Your typical MMO, only… Squashed

Approaching any hostile being will draw up an orange line between you and the enemy, along with helpfully auto-focusing your attention to it. From there, it’s just a case of moving in and clubbing, shooting or casting the baddy around a bit. Campaigns will usually group you together with three or so other players, resulting in a senseless group slaughter that never fails to entertain. When a level ends (usually by killing everything in sight), you can continue the campaign or jump back into the main game selection screen.

Any respectable MMORPG features a competent PvP element. Legends is no exception. The PvP component is hardly the most exciting player-murdering blood fest you will ever see in an MMORPG, but it does provide a fun and entertaining respite from the constant campaign running and town visiting. Deathmatch arenas are available for 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 slaughter houses, with one arena being available to free players.

Pocket Legends makes good use of the common controls found in Apple’s iOS device catalog. If you’ve ever picked up an iPhone before, you will immediately know how to navigate your way around the game. Most of the multi-touch gestures have been transitioned over, ensuring that a learning curve is pretty much non-existent. Pinching the screen zooms in, and the camera can be freely rotated by swiping your finger around your character in a general direction. Not only is it intuitive, it is responsive and comes naturally to most people. Buttons and actions are clear and suitably placed, with an inbuilt help system guiding new players through every aspect of the game’s play window, mechanics and menu screens.

Pocket Legends Chat

The Chat system uses Apple’s own iOS keyboard

iPhone games are not renowned for their graphical quality, and Pocket Legends doesn’t impress on the graphical front by any means. With such a huge lack of character customisation, a lot of players will look almost identical. Enemies lack variety and the environments themselves look blocky and bland. One place where Legends does excel is with the player abilities, with special animations and effects protruding from your character as you activate devastating spells and abilities.

Casually costly

The developers have taken into account the fact that most players won’t be using their iPhone all day, at least not to play Pocket Legends. The game, and in fact the platform, are best suited to casual games. Whilst we have all become used to spending a good few hours in front of our mice and keyboards, not every Legends player will want to play for extended periods of time. As is the case, Spacetime Studios have gone out of their way to provide users with a quick and easy way to jump into MMO gaming whilst away from their computer. Some may perceive “casual” as “lacking in depth”, but Legends is certainly addicting enough to keep hardened players engrossed in the world and playing for hours, just don’t expect your battery to be very forgiving, or your credit card balance.

Spacetime Studios have opted to use Apple’s in-App micro-payment system to fund the game. Spending your hard earned cash on Platinum points unlocks a whole host of goodies. Available directly from inside the game, you can buy extra campaigns, ability enhancing potions, character re-specs and perhaps somewhat controversially, in-game gold. With a level cap of 13 for free players, there is a large incentive to pay up for one of the many other campaigns, and as the game grows in popularity, it is likely you will start to see more and more games on the selection screen be those that require a paid campaign to join.

Pocket Legends P2P Campaigns

Level 13 – Unlucky for all

Conclusion

If there is one word to describe Pocket Legends, it would be “harmless”. The game never takes itself too seriously, and offers a unique and hugely fun MMO romp.  It’s difficult to criticise Legends for lacking the depth of other MMORPGs, when what has been done on Apple’s platform is so spectacular. The transition from desktop to handheld has been a resounding success, with all of the fundamental components of massively multiplayer online roleplaying games popping up in a 40MB download. You’re going to need a credit card to get the most out of this game, but the absence a monthly fee and an ideology of casual, pick up and play gameplay, Pocket Legends is well worth the price of admission, even if you choose to pay nothing.

Pros

A 3D MMO in your pocket

Pick up and play – Jump into a game wherever and whenever

Chat, friends, trade, PvP – It’s all here

Cons

Free content is limited to one campaign with a level cap

Screen can become cluttered with text and abilities on an iPhone/iPod Touch

Lack of character customisation

Aika Online Review: Gun-Kata Women? I’m In!

Aika Online Review: Gun-Kata Women? I’m In!

By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Aika Online is an action-packed MMORPG famous for its nonstop PVP experience. The game has been blessed with enthusiastic reviews, all praising its supposed quality of gameplay. After seeing tons of awards bestowed upon it during the 2009 Korean Game Awards, I couldn’t help but be drawn to its fame and glory. It is one of the most famous MMORPGS in Korea today, so I’m expecting no less from the famous Aika Online. Again, the game is praised for its PVP features such as its astonishing 1000 vs 1000 RVR (that’s a lot of players!). This means that you will always have people to kill regardless of how bad your virtual bloodlust is. The game is also epically stylish combat-wise, meaning it’s not your average everyday MMO that features a single slash or attack animation per character. Will 2009’s Best Game of The Show live up to our expectations? *logs in*

Smexist Galore: Is Healing Really For The Women?

There are six classes in the game, each with their own unique playstyle and GENDER (that’s right! Genderlocking!). Anyway, the classes are separated via archetype, meaning there are two melee characters (Paladin and Warrior), two long ranged ones (Dual Gunners and Rifleman), and two magic users (Warlock and Cleric). Yes, it’s amazing how both genders play differently from one another, but that’s not really the thing here (talk about sexists). Aside from the class option, you are given a small selection of premade faces and hairstyles to choose from. The graphics are solid, that much I can assure you, but it always pays to look different from everyone. Anyway, if you’re into stylish suits, there’s no doubt that this game will satisfy your lust for fashion as the characters do look exquisite in every way. There’s definitely enough fanservice pretty boys and underboobs to keep you company all the way. I guess the sad part is that the armor sets will be the only ones that will differentiate you from each other.

What’s Next? Flying Unicorns?

After enduring a series of grindfests, you’ll be prompted to get your first Pran. Prans are technically magical loli girls who sort of acts like the pets in the game; however, unlike the player characters, these cute little girls actually evolve and grow up depending on how you play your cards (which will be further discussed). Much like pets, Prans can learn combat spells which can aid you well in battle. Since you’re bound to take on a wave of monsters soon, it’d be wise to strengthen your Pran as early as possible. Perhaps the best thing about Prans is how you can customize them to complement your playstyle. Whether you want a damaging buffer or a healing little dodger, you’ll find that there’s enough Prans to go around. Prans start out as freaky long-legged Tinkerbell ripoffs but will eventually take on a scrumptious humanoid anime girl form after a period of time. Her form changes depending on how you treat her, so make sure you toughen her up if you’re looking to acquire a tough cookie.

Aika Flying Unicons

Talk To Me

One additional factor that makes this game a unique experience for everyone is the quest dialogue. Unlike other games that force you to read a big block of quest text before letting you get a piece of the action, Aika Online gives players the ability to respond through a series of premade replies much similar to that of single-player games. This system is also essential for your Prans’ growth as most of the changes that are bound to occur greatly relies on how you treat her. It’s actually a great way of strengthening the bond between a player and his pet; too bad other games don’t give you this much interaction.

TO THE RIGHT! TO THE LEFT!

And now on to the nitty gritty! What makes Aika Online TRULY special is its PVP system. If you’re looking for an all out epic war, then Aika Online is the game for you. Aside from the petty duels, the game sports a series of battlegrounds, all ranging from 100 vs 100 to 1000 vs 1000. Imagine that! I enjoy wars that match the clashing population of RF Online’s Chip Wars and World of Warcraft’s Battle for Wintergrasp, but this is ridiculous (in a good sense)! Aside from the epic battlegrounds, players can also participate in nation wars which, as the name states, is a giant bloodfest between all five nations. There’s also my favorite which is the Castle Siege, where guilds team up with other guilds to overthrow the current rulers of the castle. Players can earn bonuses and a lot of useful stuff if ever they are successful, so be sure to participate when able. When it comes to PVP, Aika’s player-to-player goodness beats a lot of MMOs by a mile. I can’t seem to emphasize that further, but you get the idea.

Aika Rifleman Class Only For Women MMORPG

The two meanings of ‘flashy graphics’

The graphics are actually pretty flashy if you were to ask me. The characters look pretty crisp which allows players to admire the stunning features of their clothes…  as well as other body parts :3. The background is actually pretty good but it could still use a bit of tweaking as most of the terrain lacks texture and depth. Though the idea of aesthetics doesn’t really affect the gameplay, it wouldn’t hurt to make the eye-candy experience a bit more extravagant. The framerate is more than acceptable resulting in stunning character movements especially when your character is beating the living crap out of a single enemy. The vibrant lighting effects are amazing in my opinion and greatly complements the whole action-packed feel. I don’t know if it’s just me, but floating texts/numbers during combat for me is an additional factor when it comes to MMO graphics. It’s always great to see how hard you hit through a series of floating red numbers. Now if my claim is true, then I would have to commend Aika Online for having one of the most satisfying crunch numbers in MMO history (I like to exaggerate but it’s also pretty darn good).

Aika Flashy Graphics

The Verdict

I think it’s pretty obvious how impressed I am with the game. Awesome PVP system, questing, loli fairies, what more could you ask for? As far as features are concerned, Aika Online definitely deserved being Korea Game Awards 2009’s game of the show. You see, these are the type of games that prevent me from commiting myself to playing various PAY TO PLAY games. It’s free, it’s good, and most of all, it’s really damn good!

The character customization phase could use a bit of gender tweaking. It would definitely be awesome to play as a male dual gunner, or better yet, a female rifleman (or riflewoman). Anyway, if you’re looking for an MMO for keeps—register, download, and play!

Pros

-Quests

-Answering system

-Prans are damn cute (when they mature *cough cough)

-Stylish

-Insane PVP

Cons

-Character customization lacks features

-Genderlocking?

-Graphics could use a bit of tweaking

My Untimely valentine: DC Universe February Content Update

My Untimely valentine: DC Universe February Content Update

By Stephen Boyd, OnRPG Journalist

On the dark streets of Gotham, shadowy individuals whisper of something big going down. No one knows exactly what, or when, but they know it’s going to change their world.
In Metropolis, citizens gaze eagerly at the sky, waiting for the event that is to come. Fearful of the villains that rampage on the streets, they still have hope that the heroes will save them. And they wait.

And wait.

And wait some more.

And then, like a Batarang from an overcast sky, it hits us.

Before the launch of Dc Universe Online Sony Online Entertainment spoke of the planned monthly content updates and teased us with information on the February Catwoman/Valentine’s day ‘Issue’. And then all communication went dead. Until today. The first Update for DCUO will now officially land on the 22nd of this month.

To finally have a ship date is great, but this news leads to a few questions.

1. Where did Sony’s Community Managers for DCUO, if they exist, hide themselves for the last two weeks?
2. Would it not really be better to have a Valentine ‘s Day themed content expansion release on,…….oh, I don’t know,….Valentine’s day?

The official site had no updates on the content at all until the evening of the 19th, and the official Facebook page, which does seem to post info semi-regularly, also went silent. Now, I cannot claim to be an expert on these things, but I do have a little experience in the MMO game and, at this early stage of the game’s life, I really think that having that content released more than one month after launch may have cost Sony revenue and players.

Releasing that content within the 30 day period could have kept those players subscribed and I believe that the volume of content in this update as detailed on the official DCUO site could have kept them in game for another subscription period.

But content is not the only thing coming. The expansive patch notes outline a significant number of fixes for issues that have been at the forefront of the communities mind since launch. Chief among these is addressing the many issues with the chat interface that I described in the previous article. Also ability and Power issues are being addressed along with a plethora of terrain glitches and NPC problems.

It seems that Sony, despite being silent for the last few weeks have not been deaf to the players pleas. I for one can’t wait til Tuesday.

See you in the skies!!

Zombie Pandemic

As the name suggests Zombie Pandemic is yet another Zombie themed Browser MMO. However right out of the gates the game seems to be doing something different.

With over 1300 unique locations accross three different maps the game world seems much larger than usual and with 700 items and a 150 zombies and other enemies the game feels a lot more rounded out and some of its competitors.

The game features rich RPG elements, including missions, advanced combat, perks, an inventory and hundreds of weapons to do battle with.

City of Heroes MetaÂ’s Verse: CoH Isn’t WoW

City of Heroes Meta’s Verse: CoH Isn’t WoW

I’m breaking away from the news this week and doing a bit of an opinion piece. Something happened to me this week while I was playing with some friends and I need to talk about it because it’s a topic I keep hearing and I’ve had enough. One of my oldest friends in City of Heroes is against change. He is of the opinion that all the new things coming out, the direction the devs are taking us is towards a World of Warcraft route. That by the end of these changes we may as well be a WoW clone but with heroes instead of fantasy creatures. Now if this was the first time I’d heard this I would ignore it. But I’ve heard several people over several global channels saying this. And I’ve had enough. I won’t go into why I don’t think it’s like WoW, because honestly I don’t know. It was a game that I could never get into and know next to nothing about. I will instead go into the basic ideas people are trying to get across.

City of Heroes TF

Anyone who has played City of Heroes knows that teaming means to rescue miscellaneous person X, get item B or stop villain M before something terrible happens and combat means walking up to the bad guy and hitting them until they stop. On my main character (a Katana/Super Reflexes Scrapper) I can completely stop paying attention when fighting minions as long as I keep mashing the same four or five buttons. With the new Apex and Tinmage task forces you have to stay paying attention. Be on yours toes, constantly moving. In terms of the fighting styles it is completely different from anything we have ever had before.

Why don’t people like this? It means the game is harder. Its resulted in leaders who more than anything are in charge of telling people when to do what. Why is this happening? Well there are two reasons. The first, the game is changing but the mentality of players isn’t. People still want to stand around and fight. But when you’re being targeted from orbit, you need to move or else you die. When people aren’t moving when they need to it becomes the job of the leader to start telling people when to move. And the leader becomes a glorified babysitter. The second reason is that people aren’t used to failing. Sure, it’s a game. And no one likes failing a game. But some people are so afraid of ending up face down, or maybe it’s the debt that they aren’t willing to take risks. Personally I’ve never had that big of a problem with debt. And when I team with people who are afraid of debt, or who take issue with my taking risks to make things more interesting I give them a saying that seems to stop them. “Debt ain’t nothin’ but a badge.” Change is bad? I don’t think so.

City of Heroes TF2

City of Heroes wasn’t stale. Things would suggest otherwise. Since the Alpha slot was unlocked every weekend two servers have gone into the red. This means that they have a large number of people on them. Many other servers have gone yellow. Now, thanks to the weekly strike targets servers are going into the red during the week. All of the servers are going from green to yellow at the very least. Numbers show that more people are logging in. More people are playing. At some points in the past it was next to impossible to find a team for anything. This is especially true of high end content. My favorite task force is the Lady Grey. Before the Alpha slot you couldn’t find 8 people to fill a team to do the task force unless it was a speed run. Now you see them being run daily. Especially this week while it’s the weekly strike target.

City of Heroes Well

This has of course lead me to another complaint people have been having. One that for once I will agree is a valid point. It is (nearly) impossible to find a team that isn’t level fifty. Everyone wants those shards. And if they don’t want incarnate shards they’re after a notice of the well. Why is this the case? We have something new. And people jump at new things. Especially the weekly strike forces because they seem for now to be a limited time thing. The only way to get something before it comes out for the rest of the population. The real question that has to be asked is why, these people who can’t find non level fifty teams aren’t on fifties themselves.

The biggest worry my friend and other people have had is that City of Heroes won’t be what it has been for so long. That the game will change so much it will be unrecognizable. I think all those people need to take a step back and look at the big picture. Apex, Tinmage, Incarnate, Incarnate trials are all end game content. Something players have been begging for. But before you can get to that point there are fifty whole levels you have to get through. When things calm down, incarnates are old news everyone they’ll look back at this moment and laugh at how worried they were.

Maybe WoW did have weekly tasks with extra bonuses first, maybe they had raids with large amounts of people. Does that mean we’re turning into them? No. Does it mean we’re taking a step backwards from being industry leaders? No. Comparing City of Heroes to WoW is unfair. Saying if you want change go play WoW is ridiculous.

City of Heroes needed the change, its benefitting from the change that’s happened already and this has just been a preview of things to come. The grinding is gone, speed runs of task forces are all but at an end. I don’t feel like making petless masterminds or concept builds just to make the game interesting for me again. The game is interesting for what it is. My desire to play is stronger than it has ever been and I’m looking forward to everything that’s coming. Maybe you agree with me, or maybe you agree with the others. Either way I hope you found this informative and got some insight.

Just a reminder that starting Tuesday the Weekly Strike Targets will be Sister Psyche and Silver Mantis.
