Brawl Busters

Brawl Busters differentiates itself from the norm with a wicked cool animation style that can only be described as a love child of Team Fortress and Guilty Gear. Once you get in game you will understand, as a wicked witch can zoom at you with her guitar calling down lightning from the sky!

In Brawl Busters, you choose from 1 of 5 very unique classes, including Boxer, Firefighter, Slugger, Blitzer, and Rocker. Then its time to unleash hell. Whether in coop vs AI or head to head mode, you will be in a constant struggle to bring the pain to all who stands in your way. This game is all about action, looking more like a first person shooter than an MMORPG.

A Mystical Land Preview: Let’s Get Social!

A Mystical Land Preview: Let’s Get Social

Neil Kewn (Murxidon) – OnRPG Journalist

A Mystical Land is an upcoming browser-based RPG from Neonga AG. Entirely 3D, the game promises to offer a complete RPG experience mixed with social elements. In addition to the standard levelling and questing that graces most role-playing titles, integration with Facebook and other social networks means it’s easier to find friends, share messages and update statuses.

Interesting in theory, but how does it work in practice?

After a short and limited character creation process you are dropped into Oak Valley, a starting area that comprehensively teaches you everything there is to know. Through a series of quests you are taught how to cook, craft, gather and fight. There’s a surprising amount you can actually do in “A Mystical Land”, from fishing to blacksmithing. These professions are all compiled in the Knowledge Book along with the game’s many recipes. There are four classes to choose from (Warrior, Wizard, Hunter and Priest), and although they’re pretty standard archetypes for the genre, each has its own distinctive role.

Combat is the standard affair. Clicking on an enemy will initiate a battle, whilst an action bar at the bottom of the screen lists spells, abilities and feats that can be used to defeat them more quickly. The controls are also very traditional, and will be familiar to anyone who has played a MMORPG before. Completing quests and winning in battle results in experience, and upon levelling up, you are rewarded with combo points that can be spent on unlocking or upgrading class-specific talents.

Neonga AG has implemented an Item Shop to fund development. Crowns are the in-game currency of choice and are purchased with real-world cash. They can be spent on a variety of character enhancements and special items (although admittedly the store is a little sparse right now). Actions like gathering and crafting deplete a characters energy bar, and it’s likely that the impatient will choose to purchase energy as opposed to waiting for it to recharge slowly. Besides that, free players aren’t particularly impaired by its presence.

A MysticalLand’s visual quality is extremely impressive – if your system can handle it. Texture work and character models are sublime for a browser game, but that rarely translates into good performance. Even players with modest systems will have to turn down settings to obtain a playable frame rate, a problem made worse in areas with high population. I hope they can improve this drastically before the game leaves beta.

A Mystical Land Preview

A Mystical Land is clearly aimed towards the casual end of the market. It should not be confused with a “My First MMO” for Facebook fans though. It is a full-featured, familiar RPG that both looks good and plays well. It remains to be seen how far the social mechanics impact the game experience, but there is enough potential here to entice both fans of the genre and newcomers. Overlooking the performance hiccups, A Mystical Land is shaping up to be something I would post on my facebook wall and not feel embarrassed about.

Alt1’s MMO Finally Revealed! Troy Online

ALT1’s MMO Finally Revealed! Troy Online!

ALT1, the Twelve Sky and Twelve Sky 2 developer, has released the Troy website through ALT1 Games on May 5th in preparation for their first Closed Beta on May 13th! Finally, information regarding this secret project has been released to the public.

Troy Beta

Troy is set in a world based on Greek myth with mythical characters such as Menelaus, Achillies, and Cassandra. It takes place on the great Autis continent, where the Trojan and Greek warriors have been revived to fight anew. Apollo and Poseidon have resurrected the fallen sldiers to fight once more in the name of the gods. However, Zeus and Hades each have their own designs for the war and intend to interfere with Apollo and Poseidon to see to it their ends are met.

Troy has many features to satisfy many different types of players: a fully-fleshed out PVP system including a chariot war and old-fashioned annihilation battles, and an interesting and intriguing storyline told in long strings of quests for those interesting solo play or lore.

The May 13th closed beta will be testing characters pre-lvl 50 and most of the early game content. Key bindings and customization are still being tweaked so players will have to make do with the presets on this. The initial stage of guilds will be online as well as the majority of chat and trade features though so have no fear. This will be a very short beta so be sure you are there on day 1! The world will come crashing down once more on May 18th at 2:00 AM PDT.

Troy Online

Troy takes place in an alternate universe created by Apollo’s jealousy after seeing his noble Trojan Warriors slain by the Greeks. In this world, the soldiers who had fallen in battle are forced into eternal battle for the glory of the gods. Only this time around, the magic of the gods has interfered, unleashing powers and limitations undreamed of within soldiers on a mortal battlefield.

Troy stays true to the standard trinity of MMORPG classes, featuring melee warriors, ranged dps hunters, and mages as the three primary archetypes. Each archtype can be broken down into 3 variations, allowing you to customize your chosen archetype to match your playing style.

As this game takes place in a world of eternal conflict, it makes all too much sense that PvP is the major focus of Troy. Once you reach level 10, you will have the option to engage in level wars every 15 minutes. To keep things fresh, four variations of Level Wars exist including Annihilation, Seize, Relic, and Infinite. Annihilation is a fight to the death where the last man standing takes the glory. Seize involves a king of the hill type scenario. Relic involves a type of scavenger hunt in which you must find and destroy the relics before your opponents. Or you can just destroy your opponents first and then take your time finding the relics. Infinite is like Annihilation except you will be brought back from the dead. The player with the most kills at the end of a time limit is the victor here.

This is only the tip of the iceberg in Troy, as many more scenarios of battle exist including Castle Wars, Hero;s War, Olympus War, and even Chariot Wars. If you have a thirst for blood and chaos, Troy is one game you won’t want to miss.

The Secret World Reveals Character Section

The Secret World Reveals Character Section

Funcom, developers of next gen MMORPG The Secret World, have recently unveiled a new addition to their website. There are now detailed character profiles for major NPCs (non-player characters) vital to the telling of the story behind The Secret World. This caught us at OnRPG by surprise that a gaming company would put so much effort into the development of NPC characters when so many games before them have ignored NPCs as emotionless dispensers of quests/rewards.

The Secret World Character Section

No doubt Funcom is demonstrating that they don’t only intend to break the mold of the MMORPG industry with The Secret World, they want to rewrite the book of standards on how these games should be made. Their dedication to back story, mystique surrounding the 3 factions, and detailed colorful focus on these NPCs may very well do the impossible; they might make average MMORPG gamers care slightly about the storyline their avatar resides in!

Here’s a quick look at the backstory of Daniel Bach, one of the more interesting characters up at The Secret World’s website:

Just ask his ex-publishers, ask the Marine units he was embedded within Iraq, ask his wife, another notoriously pitiless journalist. Ask his parents, ask every victim of his callous but accurate exposes. Hell, ask the man himself, ask it right into those obnoxious opaque aviator glasses, and he’d smile and agree.

An asshole, everyone knows, with a death wish. Bach volunteers for the most dangerous assignments, knowing his edge is his recklessness and willingness to do what others won’t. But since he stumbled out of the desert during the Iraq War, eyes burning, there’s been something else going on with Bach; an obsession beyond the old obsessions. For the first time, he’s after something more than getting the jump on a story, more than reporting from the crater the second after the bomb hits.

The Secret World Character Section

At first, everyone thought he’d developed a taste for atrocities instead of the Pulitzer. After all, he does write about human misery like a restaurant critic discussing a meal. Then he fell off the war circuit to start digging into a 25-year-old missing persons case. No one important. Even his enemies had to admit he was punching below his weight.

But Bach has been watching and planning and waiting for months. Zeroing in, up and down Maine and New Hampshire. Following in the footsteps of witch trials, Wabanaki Council legends and Sam Krieg horror novels.

Bach, that asshole, hasn’t lost his edge: he’s finally found where he can go over it.

Wow that is some good story writing for a single NPC. I hope I’m not falling for the hype by saying this but I expect amazing things out of this game’s storyline and surrounding gameplay. OnRPG will be keeping a close eye on the upcoming website developments to see what other unorthodox surprises The Secret World has yet to reveal.
