Mead: RIFT Celebrates Week 2 of the Carnival
Mead: RIFT Celebrates Week 2 of the Carnival
By Shannon Doyle (Leliah), OnRPG Journalist
Last week it was all about the games. Well it is again this week in Telara! With even more exciting games to play worth even more than the previous ones. If you weren’t playing them last week then maybe you were helping get the supplies needed for the balloons in the parade. Well the balloons are finished now and it is time to party!
Games
The same games we had last week are back! The horse race and ring toss are worth more this time around while the balloon stomp has stayed at the same reward level. This is to encourage people to play the other games and not farm out the tickets like it was so easy to do previously. Don’t get me wrong though. You can still do it, but I don’t see as many people playing it these days as I did the first few days of last week’s event. In addition to the games we had last week there are a few new ones on offer for all to enjoy. All of the new games seem to be located in Shimmersand and the first one I came to after zoning was the fashion show. And it really is just like it sounds. You walk down the catwalk and are judged by the audience. There is only one winner but in the end everyone gets the same prize.
On the next boat over where you see a huge crowd of people is the roulette table. The rewards are fantastic and scaled depending on how much you bet. I haven’t won any money yet. Though I’m sure if I keep going back I’ll win eventually, right? On the same boat, quite near to the roulette table in fact is a good old fashioned drinking game. Telarans sure do like to drink. It seems my little Eth could drink a Dwarf under the table with how she goes! And that’s a challenge I’m willing to take up. So if you see me running around Faeblight challenge me to a drinking contest! What’s the worst that can happen? The last game is another Telaran tradition. A race. This race is mounted and takes you around the port town of Fortune’s Shore. It isn’t easy with all the slow fields in your path but it is fun. As ever though lag is the enemy. That and being terrible at racing like I am.
Quests
As I said before the balloons are done. But balloons are fragile, especially against trees and planar creatures. So the balloon makers are asking for more help. This time they need supplies to patch up holes and keep the balloons intact. Sure it’s the same quest as last week just with a different name but its fun and rewarding! Especially since most people do crafting related things on a daily basis anyway. That mean old giant number is back again (it’s actually 100,000) but this time you need to gather cores. As with last week’s quest that was quite similar, it is possible for a faction to fail at completing the event. If that happens then the faction doesn’t get the title for this week unlocked in the vendor. At the carnival in Shimmersand one of the guards asks you for a favor. He asks you to beat up some guys giving the other attendees a hard time. He would but it’s against the rules and seeing as you’re an ascended…well, no one is going to question you, right? It was easy enough to do since a bunch of us were looking to do it at the same time but the quest dialogue made me fell a bit sleazy for agreeing to do it. Of course I had to do it though. That’s the quest that gives out your one doubloon for the week for the all important mount!

The quest to re-enact scenes from Telara’s history is back again this week and well worth the time and effort put in. That is of course assuming you have a good team waiting for you. I saw someone yesterday get two plaques of achievement, a rare artifact, and a few coins on top of it all from one of the boxes of random artifacts they got from doing the re-enactment rift.
Another event you shouldn’t miss is a travelling parade making its way through the zones of Telara as a zone event! There are all sorts of rewards and fun to be had during the parade. Though finding one may prove a bit difficult. They don’t seem to come around very often. So if you know where one is happening don’t miss it! It could be hours before another one comes around.
Bonuses!
Just like last weekend where there was a 25% bonus given for…well just about anything! This weekend is being called Warlord’s Weekend. So what does that mean?
That means an amazing 50% bonus to Favor and Prestige from kills. That means it is time to get out there and kick some Guardian (or Defiant) behind. Yep. PvP weekend. And if you haven’t already, this gives you the perfect chance to try out the new mercenary system. What’s that you ask? Well, sometimes getting enough people together to pvp properly can be a bit tough. With the mercenary system you can get a little help from the other side. Which makes kicking some rear even easier. I plan on running Port Scion until I’m blue in the face. It’s the best way to get some new armor in a hurry!
This is also the week of free Rift for everyone! It started on March 8th and will be running until March 14th. During this week you aren’t restricted by level like you would be if you’re playing Rift Lite. But, if you do play past level 20 and don’t pay for an account those characters who are above level 20 will be locked until you either subscribe or another one of these free weeks comes along.
If you’ve missed it, Trion has been talking a lot recently about looking ahead to 1.8. And there have been some amazing videos. All of which I would love to talk about now but there just isn’t enough time! At the end of the 1.7 event I’ll give a review of all of the videos and all the new information that comes out.
Enjoy the carnival!

Featuring recognizable characters from Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball and more, Anime Trumps mixes Eastern anime and Western board games to create a unique gameplay experience. By marrying the best elements of role play and card games with heaps of literature and arts references, Anime Trumps’ casual-yet-cerebral gameplay promises to appeal to anime and game fans alike.
Anime Trumps is an anime-inspired casual card browser game that plays out in a similar way to the classic board game, “BANG”.
Between 4-8 players take on the roles of different anime characters as they compete against each other to reach their unique goal. Each player has a different end-goal to reach according to the role they are designated at the start of the game. There are 4 types of roles available:
The Master – wins by killing all Betrays and Revolts
The Assistant – wins by protecting the Master and killing and Betrays and Revolts
The Betray – must kill all other factions and defeat the Master before anybody else
The Revolt – wins by killing the Master.
Players must achieve their end-goal by outsmarting their opponents and combining their cards and character skills effectively. The first player to achieve their goal wins the game.
Additionally, players will be able to face off in 1v1 and 3v3 modes, which promise thrilling, intensely close-fought battles that will go right down to the final card.
Join the Closed Beta

The Secret World Column: Faithless Is He…
The Secret World Column: Faithless Is He…
By Jonathan Doyle (Ardua), OnRPG Journalist
“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.”
? J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
This is how the end begins. This is the time in which everything has been laid down for the future, for us.
What am I talking about?
Only the fact that Dark Days are Coming.
The Secret World is nigh.
Yes welcome to the OnRPG’s look at Funcom’s upcoming massively multiplayer phenomenon, The Secret World.
We here at OnRPG have both commented on The Secret World before and spoken specifically to creative director, Ragnar Tornquist about the game.
With the game in the last months before release and the amount of information coming out from Funcom on the setting and game itself increasing, it is past time that we bring you on a journey into the dark places where evil dwells.
For those of you who do not know or have not heard, The Secret World is an MMO slated for release in May. Created by Funcom and co-published by Electronic Arts, TSW as it is known is set to make its mark on the MMO market. No fantasy world with warring elves and orcs here. Nor is it a distant future or alien world populated by robots or massive starships. The Secret World is our own world. It is the world of today as seen through the lens of darkness, horror and perhaps scariest of all, a lens of truth. A world where everything is true. All the myths and legends, all the conspiracies real and imagined.. It is everything that ever went bump in the night.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRY2tRU_OAo
From the fictional town of Kingsmouth on Solomon Isle to the very real and vibrant London, The Secret World is aiming to blend the familiar with the frightening. Already popular amongst various online communities for its use of alternate reality games that seek to blur the line between fact and fiction, Funcom has a game that is set to involve its players to a greater degree than any game before. Social networking already plays a vital part in these ARGs alongside the forums, but it won’t stop there after launch. The gameplay design incorporates intense action gaming with puzzling riddles that will require your smarts and ability to use the Internet to discover the answers needed to progress. In a market shifting more towards twitch reflexes and action packed combat, it’s interesting to see a game force players to think critically as their unique form of challenging users.
Coming over the next few weeks we will be looking into the factions of The Secret World and the locations revealed to us thus far. Whether Dragon, Illuminati or Templar, all combatants in The Secret World know that ultimately knowledge is the best weapon, and OnRPG plans to refresh your memories as well as bring you everything we can on what comes of this exciting game, including a first look at their reveal at GDC later this week!
Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens, but worry not. We will walk with you in the dark places.
Pangya United: Golf with Style
Pangya United: Golf with Style
By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor), OnRPG Journalist
I never considered golf a hobby that I would ever do in my life. I am more into other sports such as soccer and tennis but once I heard there was a game out for it, a MMORPG even, I couldn’t hesitate to try it out. Pangya is one of the few games that try to make golf a lot more fun than it really is. Not only is it anime themed, there is also a lot more features and content to make the game feel advanced. I decided to get some clubs and swing my first ball into its hole.
When creating my first character I didn’t have many options to make my character look much different than others. First of all there is only one character to choose from and besides that I could only choose a different hair color and shirt color. I hope this does not mean the game is heavily focused on cash shop items to change your appearance. I chose for black hair and a black shirt but unfortunately when playing the tutorial my hair was brown and my shirt was white, hopefully this is a bug because that will make your appearance very limited.
The courses all look very special and everything in the user interface is very clean and basic and shows perfectly the ideal power you need to get the ball to the cup. If you manage to lock in the perfect shot the game announces a ‘Pangya’ as your ball skyrockets across the course as far as possible. During my first match I completely missed the ball on my first swing. Yup.. I was off to a good start! My matched opponent on the other hand opened with a beautiful shot and I knew I was in for a long crawl to keep up with this guy. My opponent was playing a perfect game and was hitting everything like Tiger Woods. Although he was labeled as a beginner like me, I wondered if maybe it was a smurf account. On my second course I didn’t manage to do anything better and got another shot behind so I was in total of two shots behind. In tennis the odds would really be stacked against me but golf is a long game and I had plenty of time to make up for a poor start. So I tried my best and managed to gain back one shot in the third course. Unfortunately he hit a hole in one on the fourth course and ended all hope of my comeback. This is definitely a competitive game so don’t play if you hate losing.
I decided to look around and see what else Pangya had to offer the player. First on the tour was my room. Every player in Pangya has their own room that you can decorate with various furniture akin to the Sims game. I had a mailbox and romantic wardrobe waiting for me in my inventory so I quickly pulled them out and put them in my yet empty room. Unfortunately the furniture had the same color as my carpet and background so everything looked really boring and I decided to check out what wallpaper was available. The currency in Pangya is called Pang and you are able to buy a lot more with it than you’d expect from a golf game. Since I wanted to freshen up my room I picked out blue wallpaper and some carpet to make it look even better. Now that my room was looking much better I decided to get some more clothes for my wardrobe since the standard clothes weren’t up to par. If you like the game a lot and want to get more out of it you could support the developers of the game by purchasing ‘points’. Points are the real money currency in Pangya, and you can buy a lot more items and equipment with Points, including a few pieces not available for purchase with Pang. Luckily the real money currency is not game breaking at all and it doesn’t hurt the economy either.
Graphics
To play this anime styled Golf game you will need the following computer requirements to run this game smoothly:
CPU: Pentium 4 or higher
Memory: 512MB or Higher
Video card: Geforce FX or Higher
OS: Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7
Direct X Version: Direct X 9.0c or Higher
If you have no idea whatsoever what these computer specifications I wouldn’t worry too much. Computers from the last 6 or 7 years can handle this game without any trouble.
Conclusion
Pangya is a really fun game and fills an underdeveloped niche in the online gaming world. Golf is considered a game for people that have a boatload of money and almost seems foreign here in the middle of Europe. I have never played golf but since I have played Pangya I would loved to smash a ball with full force in real life once I’m given the opportunity. The game is anime styled to make it more familiar to gamers, and I think the developers did a great job with the UI in making the game accessible to everyone. If you have never played golf before or you just want to watch a ball rocket through the sky, then Pangya is definitely a game to try out.
