Pirate Storm: Death or Glory Introduces Engaging Guild Islands System

Pirate Storm: Death or Glory Introduces Engaging Guild Islands System

Pirate Storm

Bigpoint today announced that Pirate Storm: Death or Glory has added the ability to acquire new guild islands in guild zones within its treacherous waters. “Players will experience a greater sense of union and engagement with their comrades, each fulfilling a duty amongst a number of responsibilities, and strengthening the guild connection to defeat their foes!” said Philip Hufen, Producer, Bigpoint. “With the addition of guild islands and guild zones, we’ve thought of unique ways to add flare to ordinary guild configurations.”

With over two million registered players, Pirate Storm is an action-packed, free-to-play combat and exploration MMORPG featuring highly detailed graphics with PvP and PvE gameplay. Players navigate the seas as dreaded pirates fighting adversaries, monsters, and fiends in the battle for fame and glory.

Guilds that have reached level 5 and above in Pirate Storm can now stake a claim in territories on the new Guild Island map. With the updated guild islands system, members can build, upgrade, and fortify defenses to protect their mighty fortress. Players who attempt to raid guild zones earn Raid Points and rise in rank; the top 10 ranking guilds will unlock special rewards. By forming a guild, players activate team benefits including upgrade abilities, discounts on merchandise & repairs and bonus loot.

Pirate Storm

NEW Guild Finances
A new in-game currency – Guild Gold – can be earned and contributed by each guild member.  Guild Gold is required to purchase building structures, workshops, upgrades, repairs and related items for the guild island headquarters. Within each guild-owned harbor, a variety of monsters and defense towers can be bought and trained to safeguard the surrounding waters.

NEW Custom Crafting
Crafting has been implemented in this new development of Pirate Storm – which will be available to all players. With Raid Points, buccaneers can purchase blueprints containing crafting recipes. Items such as advanced ammunition and invasion weapons can be produced in the Workshop on the guild island. Once an item is completed, it is removed from the crafting queue, and ready for use.

Every month, guilds will have the opportunity to win the Guild Trophy – the top guild in every server will be rewarded with the prestigious insignia of “War Master,” known as the most feared adversaries in Pirate Storm.

OnRPG MMOHuts Best of PAX Prime 2012 Awards PT 2

OnRPG MMOHuts Best of PAX Prime 2012 Awards PT 2

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-in-Chief

Another day has arrived here in beautiful Santa Monica and we’re ready to continue pumping up more video coverage of PAX as well as our conclusion to our awards show. So without further introduction let’s get into it!

In our eyes Nick and his team’s last 6 years haven’t been spent in vain. With massive galactic worlds, clever combinations of community and resource management, and a setting where PvE and PvP are one and the same, you really can’t hang with Novus Aeterno in the space RTS setting right now.

Runner Ups: End of Nations, AirMech

End of Nations also brings an equal amount of heat on this award with their system of a constantly evolving world complete with news ticker, 3 player factions, and one AI super faction maintaining balance. With vehicle customization and solid gameplay, we see nothing but good things in their near future launch. AirMech is the only title really openly available on the market right now but to even appear in this category as a browser title is sign enough that they’re doing something right. If you haven’t tried this game yet and like MOBAs but feel they are a bit on the slow side, you will be in for a treat.

Our most contested award no doubt goes to the shooter category. However we felt Planetside 2 brought the most complete package, offering large and tactically designed maps ideal for combining with their unique classes to make for the best competitive atmosphere on the market. We feel shooting titles are all about the adrenaline rush and nothing at PAX brought as much of it as Planetside 2. Watch James go hands-on with this title straight from PAX!

Runner-Up: Firefall, Special Forces: Team X, Warface

Firefall, Special Forces, and Warface are all excellent shooters, each specializing in different aspects of the genre. This award could easily have gone to any of the four as the fun factor and attention to detail of each title is truly unheard of in the genre.

What other solid MMORPG on the market allows you to design your own quests from the objectives to the NPCs being used to the dungeons you are forced to infiltrate? That alone sounds like a concept for a stand-alone title but PWE and Cryptic Studios are pushing the limits by adding it as just a sideventure to one of the most impressive MMORPGs of 2012. To learn more check out James’ look at the Foundry system!

Runner-Up: PSO2, AirMech, Marvel Heroes, Starcraft II

Starcraft II was a definite close 2nd in this award for its new esports mode that allows players and fans vote on dynamic events to change the outcome of matches. This might seem like a small modders innovation but in practice it electrifies the crowds and makes the game exciting even if you’re like me and have no idea what’s going on between the units. PSO2’s customization features and attention to detail in designing a non-target based action RPG got it consideration in this category. AirMech’s combination of MOBA and RTS all within a browser environment earned it a spot on the roster as well.

From giant statues to an exclusive clean playing demo area featuring 30+ top-end PCs and both keyboard and gamepad options, you really can’t be Borderlands 2’s booth. From any corner of the convention hall you could see this bright orange alien looking booth, as well as the line of hundreds of fans waiting to get inside and see the new reveals in their public closed doors demo. For making everyone at PAX feel like a VIP, we salute you Borderlands.

Runner-Up: Alienware, Trion Worlds

Trion Worlds gets the nod for their RIFT, Defiance, End of Nations triple combo booth that made you feel like you were standing aboard the brig of a futuristic spacecraft. With sexy cosplayers representing each game, more than enough public PCs at the ready, and developers at the ready to answer any questions you might have, we have to hand it to Trion Worlds on a booth well done. Meanwhile Alienware went all out with a stadium styled esports viewing area complete with benches, demos of their various hardware, and even a crazy vehicle that you could sit in to go for a virtual ride. True to their name, their booth took us into an alien world where PC gaming is king.

This year at PAX we had two kinds of pictures taken: Those of LoL Cosplayers, and the rest. That should be plenty to give you an idea of just how popular League of Legends is right now and PAX brought this popularity to life with over half of the 6th floor booked out entirely for the Regionals an fans looking to watch them. When wearing a Riot Games shirt grants you instant celebrity status at after-parties, you know you’ve hit it big. Though when the first question a girl asks you while dancing is what your favorite champion is… well you know League of Legends has stolen the show. Be sure to check out our interview with Riot Pabro to learn more about what’s going on behind the scenes at Riot Games!

Runner-Up: Firefall, Borderlands 2

While not as heavily represented on the cosplay front (we give props to the two gentlemen dressed as clap traps on day 3 as well as the professional Firefall cosplay team), Firefall kept a constant line of 10+ people behind each PC demo and they had plenty of PCs to go around. Not to mention their cosplay team must still be seeing spots after facing thousands of camera shots over the course of the show. Borderlands 2 as we mentioned had about an average wait time of 3 hours just to get into the booth. Not bad considering hardly anyone knew what was going on behind closed doors I say!

It’s not easy to sum up exactly what about Phantasy Star Online 2 does to beat out all competition for this award. It didn’t score first with us for top graphics and their booth was nestled away in the back corner of the show receiving only moderation attention from the attendees. Their gameplay is certainly innovative, though not surpassing Neverwinter. So why do we give it this award? Because it’s the one title I found myself constantly wanting to sneak away from my crew to go back and play again and again. Because it’s the first title I’ve touched since TERA that brought that sense of action RPG combat into the online realm in a system that may even be smoother than the prior. The customization is something you could spend days playing with before even getting into the game, just to see what fun combinations you can come up with. The monster designs draw you into a world that feels unlike any other online title on the market. The anime style is perfect for appealing to that target demographic (as seen by the huge success it’s currently having in Japan!). In the end Phantasy Star Online 2 just brings a little bit of everything, and a lot of something, and that something is fun factor. The blue hedgehog is back so get ready because Phantasy Star Online 2 is set to rock the global markets in the near future.

Runner-Up: Borderlands 2, Planetside 2, Neverwinter

Our runner-ups are truly top notch titles as they focus on the key elements of their past success and drive them home like a bulldozer crashing into a primary support pillar. Borderlands 2 expands on the success of the first by offering fans what they loved, and amping it up times 5. With more classes, more bosses, more guns, more RPG elements, and a more diverse world, this title is shaping up to possibly be the best FPSRPG of all time. Co-op is just icing on the cake.

Planetside 2 masters the feel of massive battlefield warfare on land, in vehicles, and through the air like no other title can. It snagged our top shooter award and certainly would be worthy of the gold if I wasn’t just a little more inclined towards RPG titles.

Neverwinter appeals to the fans of the old D&D world by allowing them to create the world they want to see. Roleplayers the world over will soon fall in love with this title as they can craft, write, and create the characters, story, and world of their choice and then share it with all their friends and anyone else daring enough to take on your imagination. And as we said before, all this is just one piece of an overall great title more than deserving to be among the elite we call Best in Show.

Gamers Rally to Save City of Heroes

Gamers Rally to Save City of Heroes

What happens when a virtual world is condemned to oblivion?  Dedicated players of the online game City of Heroes struggle for the very survival of their city.

The online heroes of Paragon City are currently in an epic battle.  Not against the forces of crime and evil that they have been facing for eight years, but against the decision of a company that is preparing to turn off the game servers and end a game that has been running since April 2004.

NCsoft, the publisher of City of Heroes, announced last Friday that it is shutting down Paragon Studios, the game development studio responsible for City of Heroes.  Operation of the flagship will cease by November 30 due to a realignment of NCsoft’s focus.

To its community, City of Heroes is more than just a game, it is a vibrant, welcoming community.  City of Heroes was the first online role-playing game for many gamers, and introduced them to the wonders of flying through the skies and battling epic menaces with friends.  City of Heroes has brought together families, offered comfort during troubling times, and inspired charities that have raised nearly $30,000 for children, members of the armed forces, and to fight hunger.

The City of Heroes community quickly rallied and formed a campaign to save the game from virtual extinction.  “We’ve been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years.  It’s time to do it one more time,” said Tony Vasquez administrator of the Titan Network, an alliance of City of Heroes fan sites http://paragonwiki.com, and one of the organizers of the Save Paragon City! campaign.

Through social media outlets, fan web sites, and the City of Heroes official game forums, players have been organizing projects and events to convince NCsoft to allow the game to continue, exploring options including selling the game to another game publishing company or development studio.   The “Keep NCsoft from shutting down City of Heroes!” petition initiated by a community member has gathered over 12,600 signatures and continues to grow.  (http://change.org/petitions/ncsoft-keep-ncsoft-from-shutting-down-city-of-heroes) In addition, players have begun a letter writing campaign to NCsoft to demonstrate the reach of their numbers and convey the impact City of Heroes has had on their lives.

City of Heroes players have a non-stop schedule of activities to show their support.  Saturday, September 8th, players are organizing an in-game “Unity Rally” and Paragon Appreciation costume contest in which players will dress up as their favorite Paragon Studios staff member. This event will take place on the Virtue server starting at 5:00pm EDT.  Organizers expect that this could be the biggest costume contest in online gaming history.  Other ongoing projects beginning this week include a crowd funding drive in which the community has pledged to financially assist acquiring the game from NCsoft and partnership discussions with industry leaders regarding acquisition of the City of Heroes game property.

It’s been a wild week of coverage here at OnRPG and MMOHuts and there’s still plenty more to come! But for now we offer up our picks for the titles that really wowed us at PAX Prime. Root for your winners as we roll out our awards on everything from Most Improved to Best in Show!

It’s almost unfair to pit peripherals against an announcement like this but considering this was developed by a company that made a name for themselves producing gaming peripherals I feel like anything is fair game now! The size and power are truly mismatched as the Razorblade Generation 2 Gaming Laptop can hang with the big boys while still remaining compact and easily portable. If you’re looking for a high-end gaming PC but you’re always on the go, this is the hardware of choice in 2012.

Runner-Up: Nvidia GTX 660 TI, Gunner Gaming Glasses

Nvidia’s GTX 660TI is certainly impressive, allowing Borderlands 2 to reach never before seen graphical power with multiple effects such as cloth, see-through shields, and huge explosions to all combine into one massive orb of lights and colors. Though to really push your gaming to the next level you should get a pair of the Gunner Gaming Glasses (they even can be customized to your prescription glasses!) to unlock the true beauty of your favorite games.

World of Tanks has come a long way since its almost no-name launch over a year ago. Now they are preparing to whip out their update 8.0 and we were caught completely off guard by what we saw. Their graphics engine is completely overhauled providing some of the crispest animations in the genre. You’d think you were watching CGI but it’s just gameplay! Improved collision detection and the ability to push other tanks around (and off cliffs) along with the upcoming interconnectivity between World of Warplanes and World of Warships snagged WOT our top spot in Most Improved.

Runner-Up: Age of Conan, Firefall

Funcom didn’t develop The Secret World without learning a few tricks and Age of Conan is using them up with their Secrets of the Dragon’s Spine update. New challenging content, dynamic events, and the single server tech snagged it a runner-up spot. Firefall on the other hand has made vast leaps since PAX East! They’ve completely gutted and reworked classes from the ground up and unleashed tons of new maps to enjoy. Check out my interview to learn more about this quickly growing MMOFPS.

I don’t think many of us have ever heard of this title but one mention of Zombie Studios and you can immediately expect a top quality FPS title is in the works. Special Forces: Team X won us over at their after party demo with its cell-shaded smooth animations, dead-on death animation physics, well designed maps, and smooth controls, and overall fun-factor. Keep an eye out for more news on this game!

Runner-Up: Guardians of Middle-Earth, Novus Aeterno, Dead Island: Rip Tide

This was one of our tougher awards to pick as there were just so many sweet titles that caught us off guard. Warner Brothers’ Guardians of Middle-Earth console MOBA took the MOBA genre and turned it on its head by not only incorporating the LOTRO IP but doing so in a fresh way by replacing gold earnings completely with an experience purchasing system, introducing upgradable and customizable towers and minions, and adding the most strategically valuable jungle of any MOBA. Novus Aeterno meanwhile came out of nowhere and blew the show away with some of the most advanced customization features we’ve ever seen in an RTS and Dead Island.. well it’s Dead Island and a sequel. Who wouldn’t show up at PAX and immediately get a grin on their face after stumbling upon that??!

You know how you know you have the best graphics? When Nvidia builds their booth around your game to show-off the capacity of their hardware. From character design to monster design to special effects, Borderlands 2 hands-down topped the graphics category at PAX this year! Be sure to check out my full write-up to learn more about the newly revealed features at PAX.

Runner-up: Warface, Hawken, RaiderZ

While RaiderZ brings some truly top-end graphics and beautifully rendered bizarre monsters in a similar strain to Borderlands, it just wasn’t enough to snag this award for itself. Meanwhile Warface and Hawken were serious contenders, both bringing a mind-blowingly realistic semi-futuristic world to life in a way that’s so real, it could probably fool a few unobservant news reporters.

These days with all the WoW clones going about it sometimes feels like Indie titles are our only hope of seeing real innovation in the market. Thankfully indie titles ruled the day at PAX this year but none impressed us quite like Guns of Icarus Online. A team built entirely around cooperation and teamwork to run an airship against similar teams is so unique of an idea that it could only truly have come from an indie dev team. We highly anticipate checking this game out in the coming months!

Runner-Ups: Forge, Novus Aeterno

As we said, indie titles ruled the day and with runner-ups like Forge and Novus Aeterno it’s no wonder why. Forge brought the heat with extremely fast paced RPG FPS hybrid elements so smooth and player-skill dependent that you could probably build a working esports title out of this game. Novus Aeterno on the other hand is about as Indie as they get, built from a team founder by the 16 year old prodigy Nick Nieuwoudt, in just 6 years he has acquired a team of devs, writers, artists, programmers, and even Major General Jim Hunt of the US Airforce to ensure that every bit of the tactical aspects of this game are spot on to reality.

The original Phantasy Star Online launched in 2000 set new milestones for player customization and loot acquisition. Now after 12 years its hotly anticipated sequel has arrived for the first time on North American shores bringing this message, “We will not be topped in character customization.” Whether it be face, body type, or accessories, Phantasy Star Online 2 has all the tools to make the most badass (or cutesy) Anime Styled character you’ve ever seen to life. We’ll have a video interview coming up soon to express just how fantastic of a job they’ve done with this.

Runner Up: Neverwinter, Novus Aeterno

Neverwinter made this list due to the epic scale of gameplay customization you can bring to your world. From quest designers to dungeon builders, players can literally play as dungeon masters, staying true to the D&D world as their fellow adventurers may progress through purely player developed content to end-game. Novus Aeterno pops up again due to the insane amounts of tweaks and mods you can make to your arsenal of air ships. Starting from 5 basic archetypes, you can build and paint your ships to not only look the way you want, but bring the utility and firepower you desire.

The Secret World Lairs Get An Update

In certain zones in the The Secret World there are small pockets of monsters who are far, far above the ability level of the people playing through the content there. These lairs are now meant for groups of 5, if they’re far from resurrection points new ones have been created and there is now a loot progression system in place. This is coming up in update 1.2 which is expected this week.

City of Heroes Players Fight to Save their Home

City of Heroes Players Fight to Save Their Home

The City of Heroes community are a group of passionate players who will stop at nothing to save the game they love. They have had eight years to fall in love with the world they live in. In that time friendships have been formed, people have fallen in love, and as a community they have mourned those they’ve lost. And when the time came to say goodbye, the players weren’t ready. They banded together to fight to save their game. They’ve put the same passion and dedication they have for City of Heroes into saving it.

An online petition has been set up and going for a few days now. As of this moment it has over 12,000 signatures from people all over the world, and coming from all walks of life. Many of the people who have signed are long time players, but there are also people who just heard about what was happening and have never even played City of Heroes. But they play other games and they understand how the City of Heroes community feels.

Tony Vazquez is the head of the largest campaign to save City of Heroes and administrator of fan based Titan Network. He is working with a small team of fellow players from all across the community to organize events and spread the word to all corners of the internet. One such event is an in game unity rally which is being held this weekend. Players are being asked to converge on the steps of City Hall on the Virtue server in the game to show that they are a community united for one cause. Following that there will be one of the most popular events in City of Heroes, a costume contest. But this isn’t just a regular costume contest, players are being asked to show up dressed as their favorite developer. These events start on Saturday, September 8th at 5PM EST.

Social Media is playing a big part in the efforts to save City of Heroes. With a hashtag campaign on Twitter #SaveCOH and several Facebook groups which have been dedicated to the cause. They are encouraging players to write their local NCSoft office, let NCSoft know how much City of Heroes means to them, and most of all stay optimistic, because, there is always hope.

When asked why City of Heroes was worth saving, player Wender Wu had this to say; “Why is City of Heroes worth saving? Because it has an amazing world, filled with iconic imagery and backstory. Because of the community and creativity that springs from it, as heroes and villains fight in flashes of light and flurries of punches. Because the character creator is still one of the most robust creators out there. And because it’s been my first – and favorite – MMO since I started playing in 2005. I’ve never left it, and I hope I never will.”

The efforts to save City of Heroes are just getting into gear. And they won’t stop until the game they love, the world they love is safe once more. In a game all about being a super hero these heroes are fighting to save their city one last time.
