WoW Wednesday – Feast of WinterVeil

WoW Wednesday – Feast of WinterVeil

By Meredith Watson, OnRPG Warcraft Reporter

It is that time again in Azeroth.  Feast of Winter Veil is upon us again to the delight of some and the indifference of many. Feast of Winter Veil was introduced in patch 1.2.0 in December of 2004 and very little has changed with this particular holiday event since. This holiday event runs from the 15th of December to the 2nd of January.

The story of the feast of Winter Veil is primarily a Dwarven and Tauren tale (see what I did there? Tauren tail?). The latter part of the year is a time of renewal when the land is covered with snow and the people of Azeroth join together in celebration. The legend of Greatfather Winter is common among many cultures in Azeroth. He casts his wintry veil over the land giving it time for rebirth. It is said Grandfather Winter would bring a bounty with his wintry wake which has led to the races of Azeroth celebrating with feasting and gift giving.

‘Twas the feast of Great-Winter

And all through the land

All the races were running

With snowballs in hand.

The cooks were all frantic

And for those “in the know”

Swoops and owls were crashing

Like new-fallen snow.

Cookies and eggnog

Were consumed by all

As the snowballs flew freely

And drunks smashed into walls.

May your feast of Great-Winter

Be one merry and bright

And from all here at Blizzard

We wish you a fun night! From the official World of Warcraft site

So what is there to do in Azeroth during Winter Veil? Well, there is a daily quest as well as quests for both Horde and Alliance that require level 10.  The daily, You’re a Mean One…, is for those at level cap and requires the freeing of Metzen the Reindeer and killing the Abominable Greench.  The reward for this is a stolen present. Inside the present is a toy of varying rarity. The other quests give experience, reputation, gold and a gift from Smokeywood Pastures (obviously the Azerothian version of Hickory Farms). Other than a handful of simple quests, there isn’t that much to do.  Winter Veil is not the best holiday in World of Warcraft. It lacks much muchiness.

Of course there are achievements to be had including a meta achievement granting the Merrymaker title that were introduced in 2008.  If you happen to be in Ironforge or Orgrimmar Greatfather Winter requires some cookies and milk (one of the quests mentioned above).  Top tip-sell small eggs during this time for a sizeable profit. There are also holiday revellers in the cities that you can /kiss for some snowflakes. Raid bosses wear and drop Santa hats, there are snowmen about as well as holly that transforms your mount and snowballs used for certain pets and outfits.

One of the best bits is the PX-238 Winter Wondervolt Machine which transforms your character into a festive gnome. The disguise lasts for 30 minutes but not through death or shapeshifting.  If you aren’t a fan of playing gnome but think they are cute then this is a good bit of fun. Watch out though for those that would punt.

Finally, on the actual real world Christmas Eve several presents under the tree in Ironforge and Orgrimmar will become available to each player. Lower level characters won’t be able to get all the presents. In total there are six presents: Gently shaken gift, Winter Veil Gift, Carefully Wrapped Present, Festive Gift, Gaily Wrapped Present and Ticking Present. The Winter Veil Gift typically has a rare one of kind gift: Clockwork Rocket Bot 2007, Crashin’ Thrashin’ Race Controller 2008, Red Rider Air Rifle 2009 (nod to A Christmas Story), MiniZep Controller 2010, Gaudy Winter Veil Sweater 2011 which can now be purchased from a Smokeywood Pastures vendor. Who knows what it is in the Winter Veil Gift this year. Hopefully, a baby murloc.

There are quite a few bits and bobs to the festivities but nothing really substantial.  I would like to see a special currency that could be used during the holiday for transmog items, rare pets or even mounts.  Other games such as Rift and Guild Wars 2 have had this dynamic incorporated and if we are being completely honest their winter holiday events are a lot more fun and rewarding for it. Adding some sort of currency could potentially add more interest to what is now a very stale holiday. Over the years the changes to Feast of Winter Veil have been sparse at best.  Surely, it is time for a change.

The War Z Faces Fraud Accusations

The War Z is facing accusations of fraud after the launch of the game on Steam. Some buyers are saying that the store page and the official site are claiming features that don’t exist. This includes the promise of a large persistent world of 100-500 square km when in fact only 75 square km of map is available. The steam forums for the game are filled with warnings from one side and people who adore the game on the other. We’ll keep a close eye on this to see how it continues.

League of Legends Spotlight on Vi

A new spotlight video has come from Riot, this time highlighting Vi, the Piltover Enforcer. The five and a half minute long video goes through Vi’s abilities, early game play, and how to do Vi’s build. You can check it out for yourself below.

DCUO Giving a Month of Legendary Status to Former Subscribers

If you played DCUO anytime between January 2011 and December 2012 then you might be happy to hear that SOE is giving you one month of Legendary Member status. This update introduces much new content, and also sets the stage for a very special in-game event called the  End of Days.  This event starts on the 21st of December and offers tons of new challenges. A competition is held during the event to reward those who do the most to stem the tide of this rising darkness.

To get more insight into the  End of Days event, be sure to read Senior Designer Tanya Short’s developer blog. It reveals many of the unique challenges awaiting the players during these end times, and what rewards the very best can expect should the world survive. Tyrian Times – Wintersday Part 1

Tyrian Times – Wintersday Part 1

By Meredith Watson, OnRPG Tyrian Reporter

It is Wintersday in Tyria. Wintersday is the December event for Guild Wars 2 and already proving to be a great experience.  This Wintersday Lion’s Arch will host Toymaker Tixx as their special guest of honour but before he reaches Lion’s Arch he will be stopping by each city for fun and games.

There is plenty to do in this event. Plenty. Since Lion’s Arch is the major hub of Tyria, it is dressed to the nines in winter splendour. It is truly a winter wonderland with a massive snowglobe on top of the mystic forge, hanging snowflakes everywhere, candy canes, snowmen, festive dolyaks and lots of snow.  Gorgeous artistry from ArenaNet as usual.  But it isn’t all just for show.  There are three events that can be participated in from the Mystic Plaza by talking to the festive youth, Bell Maestro, and Festive Lionguard. They each have little flag icons over their heads so can’t be missed.

The Festive Youth will take you to Winter Wonderland which is the mother of all jumping puzzles. The premise for the puzzle is taking presents to needy children by jumping through a maze of snowflakes, presents and whatever else wintery goodness ArenaNet can throw at us. If you fail you go back to the start and have to wait for another round to begin.  If you love the jumping puzzles, then this is the event for you.  Having a chat with the Bell Maestro will see you playing for the Bell Choir Ensemble.  Once you enter the Bell Choir Ensemble you speak to a snowman and go through a couple options. You are then sent to a big, coloured, round platform that looks a bit like some sort of ye olde children’s game. Essentially what needs to be done is when the coloured lights reach the middle you press the corresponding note on your hot bar. It takes some practice.  Finally, the Festive Lionguard will take you to Snowball Mayhem which, as you probably guessed, is a large PvP snowball fight. The snowman at the start will give you three choices for a “class”: heavy gunner, scout and supporter. Each has strengths and weaknesses. The first team to 500 wins. The teams are the red team and the blue team with no choice of what team you’re put on. The purpose of Snowball Mayhem is to bring Wintersday Gifts back to your base to score points while killing other players.

Hovering over a capital city on any given day is Toymaker Tixx and his Funworks Krewe on their giant golem ship.  There is a teleporter in whichever city Tixx is over so that his ship can be easily reached.  The teleporter is easily located on the map. Tixx’s Infinirarium is a 5 man instance that changes depending on which race’s city it is above, incorporating the vibe of that race.

As if that isn’t enough to do there is also a snowball fight in the Grand Piazza in Lion’s Arch.  There are also presents out in the game world to be found which spawn mobs which drop even more presents and have a good chance of dropping weapon skins.

Doing all these events rewards the players with presents which often have the Wintersday currency in them which are Ugly Sweater, Ugly Sock and Ugly Hat. This currency can be used to purchase gimmicky weapon skins such as candy canes.  You can find the best looking weapon skins in the gem store. As well as skins in the gem store there is quite possibly the best costume ever.  It looks like something out of a Victorian postcard.  Guild War 2’s artists have pulled out all the stops on this one and never fail to impress.

What never ceases to amaze about Guild Wars 2 is that it is buy/free to play. ArenaNet has given us so much for so little, which I think is testament to their commitment to give us a great game.  What is also refreshing is that unlike the other big MMOs out right now, ArenaNet is not giving us just another rendition of Santa Claus. They have made a winter holiday experience that is unique to them.  Yes, there are the usual things you’d expect of winter but there isn’t a Santa knock off one.  WoW gives us Greatfather winter (a dwarf in a red robe), Rift we have Greatfather Frost-a fae of some description who is also in a red outfit and Everquest II has Santa Glug who is a goblin in a Santa hat. It is really nice to see ArenaNet breaking the mould by giving us a steampunk inspired Asuran toymaker. Tixx will be in Lion’s Arch on the 20th when we are promised a Toypocalypse. I, for one, can’t wait.

Are you looking forward to the Toypocalypse?

MechWarrior Online Launches Conquest Mode Along with Huge Update

MechWarrior Online Launches Conquest Mode Along with Huge Update

Massive new additions to MechWarrior Online will be live today as Piranha Games and Infinite Game Publishing announce “Conquest Mode” – the highly anticipated mode that allows for capturable locations in the Inner Sphere, greatly altering gameplay strategies. In addition to Conquest Mode, three epic new Mechs are available today as well as a new twist on an urban environment that will force you to walk the precipice of darkness (and ledges): River City Night. For beginners, the developers have addressed ease-of-advancement issues faced by new players by implementing an entirely new reward system enabling a more rapid advancement toward purchasing more powerful Mechs. Existing players will also benefit from economy changes.

“Conquest mode is a huge addition to how the game is played and one that I think veteran players will enjoy” said Bryan Ekman, creative director at Piranha Games. “We’re also excited to see how new players react to the changes in advancement at the beginning of the game. One issue we’ve heard repeatedly is that MechWarrior Online has a steep learning curve. We feel this content update drastically improves this aspect of the game and look forward to hearing the feedback from new players.”

The full run down of content in the Conquest Mode update is below:

·          Conquest Mode – a key game mode inspired by the BattleTech franchise, Conquest Mode puts five capturable locations on the map, each of which give players points over time as they are held. Players can neutralize and then capture enemy locations by standing on them. Cooperation among your lance is more important than ever as competing teams will constantly be trying to outflank the other and new strategies will need to be formed to win the match.

·          Economy Update and New Cadet Bonus Rewards – Fans who have not yet tried MechWarrior Online have a new reason to jump in and get hooked this holiday. New players will receive a “Cadet Bonus” (C-Bills bonus) for the first 25 games, enabling new recruits to advance faster and purchase more powerful Mechs. Additional economy changes include trial Mechs getting the same rewards as normal Mechs (including Mech XP), a one-time bonus for existing players who have completed over 26 matches and rewards given based on active participation for each round, i.e. gameplay performance for securing a win, loss and kill values among other fairness and balance changes.

Three New Mechs – All with different combat styles, histories and unique battlefield advantages:

o   Two Hero Mechs – The Twin Dragons: Piloted by brothers, these Mechs have very different styles of combat; one focuses on close range brawling, and the other on long-range attacks. Ever trying to best the other, they can be found side-by-side, but always trying to outshine the other. Born on New Samarkand and part of a noble family, they attended the Sun Zhang MechWarrior Academy together; upon graduation, each was given a Dragon – to Martin, a DRG-1C belonging to his grandmother, and to Donald, a DRG-1N that belonged to their father.

§  Piloted by Martin Takeda, the Dragon DRG-FLAME is perfect design for those who love to pick off opponents at long range.

§  Piloted by Donald Takeda, the Dragon DRG-FANG is ideal for those pilots who are all about armor, speed, and getting into the fight.

o   The Stalker Assault Mech – Weighing in at 85 tons and containing multiple missile and energy slots with a terrifying primary variant, this Assault Mech – a giant on the battlefield – may soon be one of the most popular in the Mech lineup.

River City Night Map – This urban map is extremely dark, which means Night Vision and Thermal Vision are a must. Weapons fired in the background will light up the night sky, but don’t get distracted by the fireworks; make sure to watch out for ledges and avoid falling into the water when scouting for enemies.

Phranken Mech Pattern and Camo Spec Paint – These newly released badass patterns and paint specs can now be applied to all Mechs in the MechLab.

New Year’s Items – Seven unique items are available to decorate your cockpit in celebration of the New Year – the year 3050 in the Inner Sphere including:

Balloons for that extra cheer

Hanging New Years Banner

Ice bucket

Classy Mech bobblehead, featuring a recognizable Mech

3050 hologram – Happy New Years!

Champagne glass hologram

Top hat to add some class to your cockpit

·          Weapon Speed Increases, Performance and Bug Fixes – The projectile speed of all ballistic weapons (except the gauss and AC/2), has been upped resulting in targets taking incoming fire sooner. Performance and bug fixes are also a noticeable change in this week’s content update.

District 187: Sin Streets Police Navidad Content Update

District 187: Sin Streets Police Navidad Content Update Introduces New Mini-Games, Incredible New Maps and Holiday Themed Artillery

CJ Games Global (www.netmarble.com) today announced the release of the Police Navidad content update for its hit FPS District 187: Sin Streets. Celebrating the holidays in a war torn, post-apocalyptic world overrun by criminals, CJ Games Global bears the gift of three new maps, new holiday themed weapons and characters, and even a whole new mini-game arcade.

“The MarbleLand Mini-Game Arcade lets players take a break from the business of shooting to kill and allows them to try their luck in a set of mini games,” said Jon-Enée Merriex, Producer, CJ Games Global. “We’ll continue to update MarbleLand as a new form of entertainment for players needing a quick fix of gold and items.”

In addition to MarbleLand, player run VIP Rooms will now be available where entrants can purchase tickets using in-game gold as an entry fee. The entry fee money then goes into the pot for the room for players or teams to win.

“During the room creation process, players will now be able to control settings that allow them to add an entry fee amount anywhere from 5,000 to 30,000 gold.” said Merriex. “To make it a little more interesting, we’re subtracting 10 percent from each VIP Room pot played throughout the month and adding it into one giant pot to be won during Street Fight!”

Police Navidad Features

New Maps:

·         S2 Towers (Holiday) – This is the work holiday party you’ve always wanted! The S2 Towers will have a holiday overlay but will be a permanent map when the season is over.

·         White Night – Deck the halls with…bodies. Available only during the holiday season, blast through blockades and turn opponents’ White Night into a bloody nightmare.

·         M4A1 Jade Edition: An exclusive version of the M4A1 with more ammo, better recoil and a nice new skin job.

·         PSD-XR Splendor: This popular gun gets an update with a new skin, more ammo and improved recoil. The competition doesn’t stand a chance.

·         Snowman Grenade: Pull the pin and get out of the way of this Snowman shaped grenade that explodes into joy-filled death!

Elsword Begins Multi-Month Transformation with Launch of Sheath Knight

Elsword Begins Multi-Month Transformation with Launch of Sheath Knight

Today Kill3rCombo, publisher of the hit game Elsword, unleashed a new class on its wildly popular free-to-play MMORPG. The Sheath Knight class forms the first part of Elsword Transformation, a multi-month campaign that will see numerous changes to the game, including a new job class for each character.  By the end of Elsword Transformation, each character will be armed with a new class and a wide range of additional abilities.

Sheath Knight is the first dual-wielding class in Elsword, specializing in lightning-fast melee attacks and relentless combos.  Among the new special abilities for the class is Harsh Chaser, a harpoon that drags ranged enemies into striking distance, and Sword Fall, a flurry of lethal blades Elsword can rain down on opponents. The Sheath Knight’s power stems from a legendary scabbard which Elsword discovers while questing. Choosing to follow the path of the Sheath Knight means entering into a pact with the mystical scabbard that allows you to summon a second sword at will.

As part of the new job classes being introduced in Elsword Transformation, Sheath Knight is the first of several updates that change the way players experience the game. “The new jobs classes of Elsword Transformation are a major addition to Elsword, as they fundamentally reshape PVP strategy while introducing a huge range of new abilities to the PVE experience,” said Won Lee, CEO of Kill3rCombo.  “We can’t wait to see the impact Sheath Knight alone makes to Elsword gameplay.”

In Elsword, gamers can choose from six specialized and customizable characters as they explore an immersive world and battle rivals to complete dynamic quests. As players progress through the game, they can evolve their fighting styles by upgrading to new job classes, learn deadly new abilities and master combo attacks. With intuitive and straightforward controls, Elsword offers players of all skill levels the chance to experience the thrill of victory in combat either on solo missions or cooperatively in a party of up to four players. For those who welcome a challenge, Elsword also delivers action-packed PvP combat.
