C9 Review: Action-Based MMORPG

Continent of the Ninth Seal Review: Action Based MMORPG

By Mohammad Abubakr, OnRPG Journalist

Continent of the Ninth Seal or C9 for short is the latest MMO to be released by Webzen. C9 lets players play as the heroes of the Glenheim continent to fight against Nefer and hope to stop him from opening the gate of the other world to summon his followers. Monsters are beginning to come into the world because of the fracture in the gateway and players must help to prevent Nefer from destroying the seal protecting the gate.

Sporting my new cash shop set

The game plays like an action MMO similar to other action MMOs on the market such as Vindictus and Dragon Nest. The controls are very well done by being precise and allowing easy control of your character. Like other games, the dungeons for quests and grinding are all instanced. Everyone feels differently about instanced dungeons as they come with their own advantages and disadvantages. I personally do not like the idea of instanced dungeons in C9. While they do allow players to play without having to worry about areas being crowded, instanced dungeons and areas take away the feeling of working and playing with thousands of other people on the server.

You are still able to join instanced dungeons with a party but this feature limits the number of people you meet and encounter during your battles. It all depends on the player but I wish the dungeons were not instanced.

Apart from being instanced, these dungeons are not too bad. While they are generic and simple in design, they let the player experience fast-paced killing sprees that culminate in often challenging boss fights; they are fun, and that is what matters.

Wendigo Taskmaster is down!

The dungeons also feature an interesting invasion system which helps makes the majority of instanced content feel a bit more open. Players above level 25 can invade other players’ instances and receive rewards if they are successful in killing the players. The privilege to invade must be enabled by the instance hosts and provides additional EXP bonuses, with risk comes reward.

In these dungeons a lot of time will be spent finishing quests by any of the four classes: fighter, hunter, shaman and witchblade. Being a player that prefers to take out enemies from afar, I personally like to play the hunter, but these four classes offer enough choice for all kinds of play styles. For information on all the classes feel free to check out Webzen’s guide. http://c9.webzen.com/guides/characters/fighter

From my own personal experience, I have found the questing system to be nothing special. It is just like the average MMO and gives you simple quests such as clearing dungeons, talking to NPCs and killing specific enemies. There is even a built-in route guiding system which allows players to easily locate where they must go to complete the quests. I am normally against this system as it takes away from the immersion experience but I find it to be reasonable in C9 as the game is already instanced and this system helps to find your way around town.

The skills in the game are nicely designed and animated alongside a decent skilling system. It is much like other MMOs where skills have level requirements and require points to be trained but the interface to learn them is quite neat. This window is accessed by talking to your personal class trainer and features a very handy preview window. This feature is very simple but at the same time it is a nice addition which allows users to preview skills before training them either through video or NPC demonstrations. I feel like this feature should be present in all MMOs to allow players to know what they are training without having to actually try it out. If you do feel that you have trained your skills inefficiently, you can purchase a skill reset from the Cash Shop to start over.

Looking into my future skills

Talking about the cash shop, it has always been one of the main factors for deciding on which free to play MMO to play. I have asked around amongst my higher level friends about the state of the cash shop and have received positive responses. The items from the cash shop do give stats but my friends seem to think they are not imbalanced.

The feature that I love and look for in all MMOs is player versus player combat and C9 does not disappoint. Being an action based MMORPG, the PvP relies on player skill instead of simply determining the outcome of fights based on time invested into player gear.

There are many types of PvP matches available in the C9 arena including Ranked PvP, Relay Matches, Deathmatches, Team Match and PvP Training. All of these modes are won by players killing each other but I hope future updates will include PvP matches offering additional objectives alongside the typical player killing.

Running a high level dungeon

Ever since the beta of the foreign version of C9 I have seen screenshots of C9 in our massive screenshot thread over at our forums. I was always impressed by the graphics for a F2P MMO but was disappointed when I loaded up the game. It might have just been the smaller size of images in the screenshot thread but when the game is player full screen at 1920×1080 it does not amaze me.

Don’t get me wrong, the graphics are nice for a F2P MMO but I was disappointed as I had expected much higher quality after seeing the screenshots. The graphics do not meet today’s standards when it comes to games but are passable. In terms of character customization, though you’re locked into general templates for each class, you can do your fair share of adjustments and tweaks to make each character look entirely different from others of your same class.

The user interface is a very important feature in all games and Webzen has done a decent job incorporating their UI into the game. All required information is easily accessible and even new players are not overwhelmed by the designs as all icons are quickly distinguishable. Options to change size would be nice but are not necessary.

To conclude, I enjoyed my time playing Continent of the Ninth Seal and would definitely recommend this game to anyone looking for an action based MMORPG. At first I did not enjoy playing the game but after changing classes I came to love running dungeons. I could definitely see myself playing this game if I had more time on my hands. Be sure to check out C9!

MEAD: RIFT’s Clericgeddon

MEAD: RIFT’s Clericgeddon

By Shannon Doyle (Leliah), OnRPG Journalist

The idea was simple. A five man static team, all clerics, all souls covered. We had every variety of Cleric you could imagine. We named ourselves Clericgeddon. We were easy mode. In every MMO I’ve played after Everquest I have had at least one static team. The idea of them has just always appealed to me. It actually took me a surprisingly long time to suggest a static group in RIFT. I was happy on my main, who happens to be a Cleric.

The idea came to me after I had seen a bunch of people talking about how unfocused and useless clerics are, except as healers. As someone who has loved Clerics from the start I knew this just wasn’t true. So I came up with a way to prove it. After our fifth person backed out we were left with just four of us. But that actually worked out in our favor. This way we were able to each pick two souls that complimented each other that the others didn’t have. Then our third soul was one that someone else already had. But it was set up in such a way that a soul wasn’t present in the team more than twice. This ended up working really well for weapons too.

We had our tanky Cleric using a two handed hammer and getting himself right in the fight. He also got himself into trouble more often than not unless the rest of us were there with him. I was more ranged attacks and preferred the book and sword route. There was another two handed hammer user. Then there was my partner in crime who could never decide between staff and mace/shield.

So you might be wondering, how well did it work? Happily I can say fantastically, if everyone was on the same page. Because we had varying ranges and melee people have minds of their own it was pretty easy for us to get split up. And when that happened we died fast. But if we were all together, all focused on one fight. Well that fight never lasted long. We were beasts.

We even had crafting set up so between all of us we could craft anything while having plenty of supplies as well. Everyone had at least one crafting ability and one gathering ability.

Our one and only dungeon attempt went a bit poorly sadly. Our tank had somehow managed to get behind us in levels. We think this was due to him not taking a few quests but to this day we aren’t sure. Anyway, we couldn’t heal him fast enough. And when he got into trouble it was deep. So we just called it a wash. We declared we would go back someday and be as awesome there as we were in the rest of the world.

Sadly that day never came. And the static team suffered from what every static team I’ve ever been in does, real life. Sure, real life is unavoidable. And sometimes you just don’t see the bad stuff coming your way. All it took was for one of the four of us to not be available as often and things started falling apart. Two of us wanted to play more, one of us who lived on the other side of the world just didn’t have the time or energy to dedicate to it anymore. And so we collapsed. We hadn’t even made it through Freemarch. But what a beautiful idea it was while it lasted. Will this experience make me shy away from static teams in the future? No way! I’d love to do another static team in RIFT. Another gimmick of sorts. All I need is an idea and some people to do it with me.

League of Legends: Z for Zyra

League of Legends: Z for Zyra

By Jason Harper (Hhean), OnRPG League Writer

Zyra is a mage with a variety of plant themed tools at her disposal. She has both burst, and sustained damage, with good utility and even some map control. While she looks complex at first, her basic game is quite easy to get to grips with. As with most mages, she’s best suited to go mid, though she also is a surprisingly strong jungler for a mage. Brand or Yorick players will likely take well to Zyra, as her seed combos work in a similar way to the former’s Blaze passive, and her plants can be used in a manner not dissimilar to the latter’s Ghouls.

Pros:

Probably the best AP jungler in the game. Still will lose to most top jungle picks though.

Good scouting power, giving her a safer lane

Very good attack animation for a mage

Good amount of utility (3 crowd control abilities)

Plants make her harass very strong in the lane

Good kiting power against melee enemies

Her ultimate is massive

Cons:

Damage from plants can be unreliable

Once summoned, there’s no way to stop a plant from pushing your lane

Has some mana issues early on

No escapes (Not unusual for a mage)

Ultimate is close range

Super squishy

Her passive, while hilarious, is not great

Ability Summary

Deadly Bloom [Q]: Small AoE nuke with a small delay. If this hits a seed, it will grow into a Thorn Spitter plant. These are long range stationary pets that will prioritize champions or whatever Zyra is attacking. Very easy to use Rampant Growth immediately after this for free comboing potential.

Rampant Growth [W]: Puts a seed on the ground. If hit by a spell, these seeds will grow into a plant. If an enemy stands on a seed, it will explode, revealing them for a short while. While the seeds remain on the ground, they grant vision around them (They grant about as much visibility as a Teemo mushroom). The seeds cost no mana, but rely on an ammo system to use. You can carry around up to two seed stacks at a time. The passive cooldown reduction on this ability applies to all of her kit, and maxes out at 20%, ultimately allowing her to need only one cooldown item to hit the cap.

Grasping Roots [E]: Linear skillshot that will root everything it passes through. Will turn any seed it hits into a Vine Lasher plant. These are close range stationary pets with a slow that will prioritize champions or whatever Zyra is attacking. Due to its mediocre range, it’s best used to stop approaching enemies rather than to kick off fights, but can be used well as a ganking tool while jungling.

Stranglethorns [R]: Giant AoE nuke that knocks targets airborne, and increases the attack speed of any plants caught in it. It’s a pretty standard ultimate, useful for bursting the enemy team during a teamfight. It’s important to try to catch at least one plant in the blast, as the sustained damage the buffed plants deal can be brutal. Due to its long windup time her ultimate works well as a follow-up to a good initiation, rather than acting as initiation itself.

Rise of the Thorns [Passive]: When Zyra dies, she can hit enemies with one last skillshot. Given it hits for true damage, this will hit hard regardless of any other factors. Doesn’t scale in any way except for champion level, so you can’t itemize in any way to make it more useful, unlike Anivia’s passive.

Combos & Shenanigans

All of Zyra’s abilities have a short windup time before they hit their target, so you can quickly drop a seed into one of your other abilities before they actually trigger. Of all her abilities, her ultimate has the longest wind up time, allowing you to cast it, then immediately cast Deadly Bloom and drop a seed just before her ultimate triggers, giving you an instantly buffed plant.

Using smart cast to quickly cast Rampant Growth just after you’ve cast Deadly Bloom in the exact same spot is very easy to do, and makes for some excellent harass in the early game. Doing this combo just behind the enemy caster minions will not only hit like a truck, but also prevent them from getting anywhere near your minions to last hit, denying them loads of farm. The only drawback to this trick is the AoE and the plant’s constant auto-attacks will push out your lane, so you have to keep yourself warded, or use this trick sparingly.

If a bruiser is planning on ripping you a new hole, then you need to make use of her other main combination. Dropping a seed right in their path as they approach before immediately casting Grasping Roots will not only snare them, but also allow the newly grown Vine Lasher to slow them as they’re forced to run past it. If you’re really scared of getting chased down, this can optionally be combined with a use of her ultimate. Using the ultimate just after they’re snared will guarantee they’re knocked airborne, and they will have to deal with the now enhanced Lasher ripping them to bits as they try to advance. With all the extra time this buys, you can then follow with yet another round of Grasping Roots, and another seed. This is harder to land when targeted or even skill-shot based gap closers get involved, but if the enemy moves in a predictable manner, they can still be kept at bay. Simply drop the seed right at Zyra’s feet as they dash in.

Zyra’s Thorn Spitter plants have a very long attack range, so abuse this if you’re low on health and skirting the edge of a larger team fight. Simply place her seeds, hit them with Deadly Bloom and stay well away from your enemies. You can now be a full screen away from your foes, and still contribute somewhat to an ongoing fight, even when getting in range with your normal spells would be far too risky.

Jungling with Zyra is going to feel familiar to anyone who used pet-based junglers in Dota. She’s utterly useless at level 1, but once she’s hit her second level, she can leash for her plants before they start soaking up damage. Walling off camps to make it harder for the creeps to get at her is also a very effective trick. When invading, she has the unique ability to fight Golem from the friendly side of her wall, leashing it without having to move an inch. She does need two seeds stacked up to do this effectively, and not risk a reset on Golem, but it’s a safe form of invasion that compensates for her lack of an escape. Her ganks can be deadly if she makes use of her Grasping Roots and Stranglethorns effectively, but it does mean she’s entirely reliant on a single skillshot in the early levels. A single juke will shut her down. If the enemy actually comes into her jungle, she’s going to have a lot of problems, which is where she’s going to come up short compared to most junglers. If Trundle decides he wants to fight her, she can do nothing but run or die. She’s also extremely blue reliant, making her very easy to catch with a full 5 man invasion right at the start of the match. These weaknesses are nowhere near as bad as other AP junglers though, and she will make a good jungle pick for specific team compositions.

Even if she isn’t going to fully jungle, once you’re around level 3 she can easily clear camps from her lane, and can even steal the enemy’s blue quite easily if her lane opponent is dead or roaming.

Conclusions

I don’t like Zyra. I don’t like the way she looks, or the way she sounds. However, I can’t deny that she’s not only effective, but also has a good pace to her abilities. She flows very well, with her ability delays actually feeling like a strength, rather than a weakness. Subjectively, I hate her tired ‘Deadly Seductress’ routine that’s now being used on somewhere close to half the female cast, but objectively I can’t deny that she’s looking like a good character.

Her strength is definitely in the laning phase, where her plants turn her into the mage version of Yorick. Late game she doesn’t quite have the burst of other mages, but she can do very well in prolonged engagements, provided she isn’t instantly focused down. Her map control can also make her a good solo queue choice simply because her seeds can be used in place of wards if your support isn’t doing their job properly.

Final Verdict

She’s looking very strong. She may be worth picking up now before the community works out some ways around her, or Riot outright nerf her. My gut reaction on her is she’s going to be a flash in the pan character that seems strong for a while, before fading off into obscurity. That may be my own bias against her incredibly dull personality showing through though.

To discuss Zyra yourselves, post in the massive League of Legends thread in the free to play MMOs section, or post in the comments section below. If you haven’t tried League of Legends yet, you’re missing out.

Allods Online’s Take on “Player Housing”

Allods Online’s Take on “Player Housing”

By PioPico, gPotato Representative

Today we are going to delve into a common feature you may come across in MMORPGs known as player housing, but within Allods Online. Player housing contains similar functions but common elements tend to focus around giving the user a personalized space to hang out and acquire territory within the large virtual world where our characters exist.

The concept of player housing has evolved in Allods over time as we continue to receive constant content updates from the developers. Last September we introduced Astral Ship customization. Anyone who is familiar with Allods will know Astral ship combat and exploration is a unique feature that distinguishes the game from other MMORPGs.

With Astral ship customization, players were given the option to customize practically every corner of their ship including objects such as rugs, lights, counters, ceiling fixtures and more! This made trips to the Astral with your party more entertaining by riding in comfort and style that fit your personal desires.

The Game of Gods expansion last February introduced a feature for dedicated players to start their journey to achieve the Title of the Great, an advanced title to recognize one’s time and efforts from completing a series of challenges. Acquiring the Title of the Great initially offered various rewards such as increased skill points and a dual spec build.

The rewards have increased with every main patch update since February. This is where player housing saw a new light beyond Astral ship customization where players could begin construction of their own private allod! It’s a long construction phase and with Patch 3.0.4 coming August 8th, players are able to complete their allod’s construction with three terrain options to help personalize their home to one’s elemental taste – desert, jungle, and snow.

Players are able to teleport to their private allod to take a breather away from the PvP battles, raids, and busy capital cities. It’s a great opportunity to relax and hang out on one’s allod where there are also daily quests to award you with precious gold!

Having player housing in the form of a housing unit is cool, but owning your own allod is even more radical! With all that we have shown you so far, content is still being developed to make this feature a truly unique experience that will create more incentives to owning a private allod. Like you, we are excited to see how owning a private allod continues to evolve with future content updates!
