Heroes of Newerth: Ravenor…

Heroes of Newerth: Ravenor…

By Jon Thorp (Speedohdk), OnRPG HoN Specialist

With the new HoN patch 2.6.5 comes the latest S2 creation, Ravenor. I’ve always been a big fan of strength heroes and was excited to hear about this upcoming strength “carry”, hoping he might have a Berzerker type feel to him with high burst dps while maintaining a strong presence and decent survivability. Unfortunately what everyone received was a jumbled mess of abilities that not only do not synergize with each other but most of his skills have little synergy with any feasible item build whatsoever.

Official Ravenor hero spotlight released by S2, giving a brief overview of his role and abilities.

Ravenor is a hero that specializes in close-range AoE magic damage. His abilities fuel his ultimate which make him faster, and attack for more damage. Stacking quite high, with enough auto attacks Ravenor can quickly become a killing machine if left alone in teamfights. He does however have blaring weaknesses I will point out that will likely be addressed be S2 in a future balance patch to make him more viable in casual and competitive play.

Ball Lightning: Similar to Maliken’s sword throw or bubbles’ shell surf, Ball lightning is a skill-shot initiation ability in which you throw a sphere of energy toward a target location and have the ability to teleport to it instantly if an enemy hero is hit. While useful early game due to the slower movement speed of heroes at lower levels, as the game progresses the slow movement speed of ball lightning inhibits Ravenor’s ability to initiate on his own and this spell becomes more of a follow-up initiation.

Storm Blades: This ability applies a buff to your attack, increasing your auto attack damage by a large amount and causing the extra damage to bounce to nearby targets. With only a twelve second cooldown, Storm Blades is essential for feeding your insatiable hunger for gold per minute by increasing your creep score when under pressure.

Electrical Feedback: The way Electrical Feedback has been implemented conflicts with the original intended use. Its high cooldown means it can only be used sporadically during an encounter; The high mana cost relative to Ravenor’s mana pool forces an already mana-starved hero into making inefficient item pickup choices, or literally dropping Electrical Feedback altogether (which most people do).

Power Overwhelming: Increasing movement speed and base damage based on how many charges you currently have, this ability has the potential to be monstrous. However, after playing Ravenor extensively, seeing his level 3 ultimate at max charges simply isn’t realistic. If you manage to land a follow up Ball Lightning to start off the charges and follow up with a well-timed storm blades, you can expect to fight at around half charges for an average skirmish. A decent ultimate to be sure, but its major downside is that the charges do not last long enough, falling off and resetting to zero after every encounter.

Ravenor chasing down Riftwalker with a successful Ball Lightning throw

Deciding what items to purchase on Ravenor is especially difficult due to his abilities being quite awkward and almost contradictory of the role he plays. Rather than giving him the jack of all trades title like S2 intended he is kind of the ‘meh’ of everything. Not really excelling at any one particular aspect of the game. This makes talking about his item builds somewhat difficult.

“The ability to choose the exact right items in every game for every situation that may arise is a very difficult thing to master. However with consistent analysis of why you pick up what items and if there could be a better solution, then over time you will start to notice it becoming easier to see what item is needed when. Overall knowing what is most ideal in a moment’s notice will make a tremendous impact on how your game is played out!”

This is a quote from another article is even more accurate here because of the wild item routes Ravenor can take. Whenever I coach I can never emphasize enough how important item analysis is.

This popular in game item guide (credits to lauffer) shows just how versatile Ravenor can really be, ranging from tank-oriented playstyles with heart plus helm of the black legion to raw damage builds like shroud plus hellflower for initiation into a strong burst chain. What items to choose is entirely determined by what hero composition your team has, the enemy team has, and what actions you think will have the most impact in the game with certain things taken into account. For instance, if you have a very dominant lane and are farming quite well you may want to go for the initiation into damage route; if you aren’t farming so well on the other hand you may want to start off with a helm of the black legion to help your ability to get last hits safely.

If you are only comfortable with x build and it works, that is completely fine, but I encourage you to branch out and analyze what situations may arise in the game for you following picks and lanes. You may be surprised how effectively a build you previously thought inferior to what you normally do works if you give it a shot! Just remember, trying new builds is done with the intent to learn and improve, not to win. Winning is the thrill that makes video games so overwhelmingly enjoyable, but in a game with a learning curve as steep as Heroes of Newerth leaving and eventually expanding your comfort zone with regards to what items you pick up and when on any given hero is a necessity to improving.

Back to Ravenor, to say I enjoyed playing him would just be wrong. His weaknesses outweigh his strengths by a pretty wide margin and sadly he cannot serve a single purpose for any given situation that another hero cannot do better. He may be fun to play, but from a competitive view Ravenor is functionally worthless. To say a hero is obsolete in a game as diverse as HoN is a bold statement, but unfortunately it’s true. With all that being said however, I have no doubt changes will come to Ravenor in one way or another in future patches. It really only takes a few tweaks to bring something underpowered from zero to hero, and there is a large number of ways to do this; not to mention a great beta testing team constantly testing new content and giving feedback on it. Overall I would say Ravenor is a potentially amazing hero, but currently underwhelming.

Eternal Blade Dev Diary: Tellos Forest

Eternal Blade Dev Diary: Tellos Forest

With special guest host The Archer

Namaste! Welcome to Eternal Blade‘s Fairytale Series #18, everyone. I hope you don’t mind if I step in for this week’s introduction to Tellos Forest, since it’s one of my favorite areas. As an Archer, I spend a lot of time there, practicing my archery and trapping skills.

(By the way, did you know that 18 is considered a very lucky number in China? It means that you will prosper! I hope you all have prosperous and happy weekends.)

Tellos Forest

Tellos Forest is a zone with many different towns, fields, and dungeons in it. The variety of geography in these areas is just wonderful, from the quiet river stream to the dream-like cherry blossom forest. It’s a shame that such dangerous monsters have started taking over, don’t you think?

Marietta’s Farm

Fortunately, the people around here are keeping their spirits up. My new friend Marietta is a good example. She and her father have a small farm in the forest. I helped them fight off the monsters who were threatening their fields and Marietta helped me find a way to travel safely to Reata.

Reata

You may remember Reata from previous Fairytale Fridays. It’s the first town you see, and it’s full of wonderfully nice people. To be honest, I don’t really like being in towns – I prefer the solitude of the forest – but a lot of those people needed help so I found myself coming there a lot.

Murai’s Den

One of the villagers asked for my help with the Murai, leader of the rai creatures. Years and years ago, these creatures tried to attack Reata and lost. They were driven back into the crystal caves they came from, and they lived there quietly for a long time. Then Darkhold invaded the world and started attacking human villages, too! The Murai grew jealous of their success and decided to lead her people into battle again. She’s a very tough opponent, so watch out for her Totem of Anger!

Cherry Blossom Forest

I also had to defend the Cherry Blossom Forest from those who would harm it. Cherries bloom year round in this beautiful forest, thanks to an ancient magic that attracts large amounts of ether. There are some who would control this power for their own purposes, but natural essences like the ones in this forest should never be controlled by outside forces. Even The Soul Summoner recognizes that.

Frost Hill

There are many wonderful places to discover in Tellos Forest, and I hope that one day you’ll come and visit them all. Even with all of the monsters running around lately, it’s still a beautiful area and my favorite place to spend time. Safe trails and nature’s blessings, everyone!

Aeria Games Integrates ijji Games A.V.A., Soldier Front, and GunZ

Aeria Games Integrates ijji Games A.V.A, Soldier Front, and GunZ

Alliance of Valiant Arms

Aeria Games announced today that three popular action titles from ijji Games are transitioning to Aeria Games. Current players of Alliance of Valiant Arms (A.V.A.), Soldier Front and GunZ will be able to continue playing with their existing game characters, while receiving the added benefit of seamless support and community service through Aeria Games. Aeria users will now be able to access these quality games through their Aeria accounts, bringing new players to the franchises—and new competition for ijji veterans.

GunZ

Earlier this year, Aeria Games acquired the popular online gaming portal, ijji Games, in conjunction with a strategic investment partnership from NHN Corporation. Of the three ijji titles moving to Aeria, A.V.A. is an intense, highly tactical first-person shooter (FPS), Soldier Front is a military-themed FPS and GunZ is a unique third-person shooter with fast-paced, acrobatic action. Under the agreement, Aeria will also consider new games from NHN for release, which will further boost the robust and diverse portfolio of over 30 free-to-play titles supported by Aeria Games.

“We are thrilled to have A.V.A., Soldier Front and GunZ join Aeria Games,” said JT Nguyen, Chief Operating Officer, Aeria Games. “Through this arrangement, we will cater to more gamers who will benefit from all the community and customer service advantages of our multi-platform online gaming destination.”

A.V.A. transports players to an alternate present-day timeline in which forces from a revived Warsaw Pact face off against troops from the European Union and US in first-person combat, utilizing the power of the Unreal Engine 3 to immerse players in gorgeously detailed battlefields. A.V.A. also boasts a strong competitive scene with a variety of tournaments and events. Soldier Front is a hugely popular military FPS featuring classic, competitive gameplay. The action shooter GunZ is set in a world where fantasy and magic meet the industrial revolution. In GunZ, players can perform unique, gravity-defying acrobatic stunts such as wall running and tumbling while undertaking dangerous quests.

A.V.A., Soldier Front and GunZ are now available to all players with Aeria Games accounts. These games are free to download and play. Existing ijji Games users can transfer their ijji account information, including G-coin currency and existing game characters, to an existing or new Aeria Games account.

City of Steam: The First Alpha Weekend

City of Steam: The First Alpha Weekend

By Shannon Doyle (Leliah), OnRPG Journalist

This past weekend saw the first major public look at indie browser based MMO City of Steam. Last week I got to have a sneak peek at the game before they opened the servers to everyone. It was such a different game with people running around and chatting with each other about the game. Admittedly I didn’t do much in the way of teaming. Partly because I became obsessed with one quest that had me running in circles for hours and partly because the quests were easy enough, and I was awesome enough not to need people. I focused a bit on the family quests, ran through a few dungeons and an outdoor instanced map.

The very first quest I took after climbing off the train was the tour around the refuge where my new home would be. Now, I could have run around like a chicken with it’s head cut off in search of these places but that would have taken forever. I also could have used the street signs to have them take me exactly where I needed to go for each part of the quest. But instead I decided to make use of the quest tracking UI. Some, not all of the quests you can click on and there will be a small arrow on the ground telling you exactly where to go. Admittedly the pathing isn’t the best but in some cases it is a matter of taking two steps forward from the point where it says to go. My husband slept in on Saturday morning and I swear that 90% of the time he was asleep was spent on one quest. Not because it was difficult. In fact I didn’t die the entire weekend. The reason I was so occupied was I needed to have them all. A morbid man whose sole purpose in life was to hide these little trophies all around the refuge told me to find them. I happened to be wandering around when I found my first one. And from that moment I was hooked. I spent hours hunting in every little corner of the map for these things. Nevermind that my house was a mess, or that there were rats in the sewers walking on two feet, I had to have those trophies. Eventually I found all but one. I ran through the whole map 20 times at least and never found that last one. That was when I decided to stop messing around and cleaned up my house.  You see every race has their own house. Each house is an instanced version of the same building for everyone. Outside, same building, inside all different. Why? There are quests and little things you can do to change your house. First I cleaned up a mess in the dining room then I discovered the pantry was empty. So I went back to the main section of Refuge and looked for someone selling food. So after getting the food I went back and stocked the shelves. My home actually was looking not bad. The table was set, shelves full of food. There isn’t any bedding on my bed yet, but hey, I’m a refugee with my family. Can’t have everything.

This was about the time my husband got up. He hadn’t seen the game yet so I gave him a tour. The first thing he said was, “Wow. I didn’t know browser games could look so good.” This is something I’ve been saying since I got my hands on the game last Thursday.

All fighting happens in an instanced map. This is something I didn’t notice until someone pointed it out to me. Then I was like…huh, yeah there is no combat in the main area. This means you can run around the city without worry. The first dungeon I went in took me to a very classic MMO spot, the sewers. Down there you find the rats walking around on their hind legs and these cute giant tadpole like creatures. And this is where my love of kicking boxes came into full swing. We got a brief bit of it in the tutorial but this is where they really shine. They have money, gear, books…you name it you can find it in those things. And its not just boxes! The sewers had floating barrels and another instance had vases that may have also been spittoons. Instances also have secret doors. In what looks like just a wall of buildings with doors from time to time they actually open giving you more areas and often the best loot comes from these hidden chests. There are also dungeons within dungeons. Other floors which are much harder than the starting ones but you still have to work through the first one to get to them. I also learned that loot is basically a free for all. It drops and well if you want it before your teammates you better be on the ball. Or just ask them nicely if they pick up something you want. This doesn’t apply to everything though. There are some things that are specific for one person and they simply don’t appear for anyone else.

Overnight the world saw some additions. Signs and questboards are everywhere now. There was even a new store though when I visited it there wasn’t anything there. I did get a screenshot of it though because in this run down part of the city it looked amazing.

This last weekend was all about trying out the Humans. And for me all about trying the quests and Dungeons. Next weekend is all about the Elves. I can’t wait until next weekend my focus will be on the weapons, marketplace and various modes of transportation in City of Steam. Congratulations to the Mechanist team for having such a smooth first run.

Maestia – US Press Tour and First Impressions

Maestia – US Press Tour

By Michael Sagoe (mikedot), OnRPG Journalist

New to Gravity’s Warp Portal of F2P titles comes Maestia, a fantasy MMORPG focused on everything for everyone, including a mercenary system, faction based PvP and small tweaks on several time-tested MMO features. Even though I ended up showing a little late to the tour, I managed to get a quick look at Maestia during its Open Beta launch.

When starting out, players will have a choice between one of two factions:  The Superion Guardians and the Temple Knights. The Temple Knights are trying to prevent an evil Dark Lord from rising, while the Superions are trying to summon the Dark Lord so they can defeat it once and for all. It’s an interesting premise where both factions are good guys, but still at odds with each other.

Character creation and customization features your typical set of MMORPG class types such as Warriors, Rangers, Clerics and Mages.  Customization was a bit on the average side, offering choices between face, tattoo, hairstyle, height, body types and color palettes.  Since I was in hurry so I could join the session already in progress, so I decided to go with a Ranger (allied with the Temple Knights)

After creating my character and getting logged in, a quick glimpse at the world of Maestia through an animated cut-scene was shown. After that, I was dropped into the home town of the Temple Knights, with some pretty straight forward tutorial quests to follow. As I waited for the press group, I browsed around the town for a bit and completed a few quests. Now it seems like some pretty basic stuff, but to help players go through questing quickly, Maestia introduces a “Prayer system” where players can pray to a god to seek wisdom, advice and a few quests right on the spot.

As the press group returned from their dungeon run, GMs took the time to explain one of the game’s key features: The mercenary system. Players can hire NPCs as mercenaries in order to tackle dungeons, which is great for solo players or players that are currently missing a few friends to do a dungeon run with, and since mercenaries can tank, heal or deal damage, you won’t have to worry about any trinity issues. I didn’t have a chance to try out this system for myself, so I don’t have much of an idea of how controlling mercenaries in dungeons could work, though I’m sure it would require a ton of micro management skills when bringing a whole bunch of them.

The best part of the mercenary system is that players can become an NPC mercenary when they’re logged off, allowing other players to use your character. While you’re away, your character can earn money and EXP.

It was then time to get our hands dirty with a little competition. Maestia features both open and structured PvP. For our press tour, we participated in an arena match.  It was me and three others on team Temple Knights against four on Team Superion. The rules were simple: Defeat as many enemies as possible within the time limit.

As an archer, I was abusing range as much as possible, lighting players on fire and picking off weaklings. Two players on the enemy team got tired of my nonsense and decided to pick me off and take me out on several occasions.

As a quick note: The combat plays out like any other point & click MMORPG out there, but to help players keep track of combat stats, there’s a bunch of message pop ups for skill usage. It’s a neat little feature, but it can be hard to keep up with after a long battle. Luckily, this can be turned off.

The match ended with our team losing by four points. I, however, managed to rack up the most kills.

The tour was pretty much over by then, but I wanted to check out a dungeon before signing off, so we went over to Deadman’s Hall to get a glimpse at one of the latest dungeons available.

Dungeons in Maestia can be done on either normal or expert mode. Normal mode runs are basic and can be done solo w/ mercenaries, but expert mode runs are more challenging since not only do enemies hit harder, but there may be other objectives and tasks that you must complete while advancing.

Running through this dungeon went pretty smoothly for us since we were all a bit overleveled, but was still a joy to run through due to a well-crafted atmosphere.

Overall, Maestia is an MMORPG that will surely have something for every kind of MMORPG gamer out there, and with Open Beta, there will be plenty more to partake including Open World PvP, Talent Trees and more.

Maestia is now available to play in the US, so feel free to check it out!

Spirit Tales Introduces Clan Island Updates

Koramgame Presents Spirit Tales – Clan Island Updates

Spirit Tales

Spirit Tales has released its latest “Clan Island” update, just in time for summer. The Clan Island is a special location where each clan can hang out, take videos of them without being disturbed, stash various items, go fishing, and even relax in a hot spring.

Features

Clan Warehouse:
After opening the Clan Island, clans will instantly have their own Clan Warehouse. The Clan Warehouse allows players to store and share non-bound items with each other, so they can pool their resources. Additionally, to prevent theft, each Clan Chief will be able to decide who gets access to the warehouse.

Hot Springs:
When a clan reaches Lv. 4, their hot spring will open. The hot spring, gives all players sitting in for 5 or 10 minutes a special buff. Players can choose which buff they want by selecting a special hot spring powder. This is ideal for clans who plan to go take down a boss together. Also, while relaxing in the hot spring, you can enjoy the view of your new statues.

Statues:
Each Clan Island has four statue slots. The Clan Chief can make a statue of any player he or she chooses, allowing them to customize the look and feel of their island.

Fishing:
Finally, in additional to chillin’ in the springs and checking out their statues, players can go fishing! While fishing, they have a chance to catch quest items and special costumes.
