SOE Reveals Starting Zones for Dragon’s Prophet

SOE Reveals Starting Zones for Dragon’s Prophet

Following their Osiran army enlistment, new players will choose one of two starting areas to begin their journey to become the Dragon’s Prophet and unravel the mystical world of Auratia’s twisted tale of corruption. Today, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has released details for both starting areas: Bakra and Satuma. Each starter zone features picturesque scenery and hundreds of quests suitable for players up to level 30.

BAKRA

Dragon’s Prophet‘s central starting region is an island called Bakra. Teeming with all manner of monsters including wolfmen, trolls, wild dragons, and cunning goblins, Bakra will make life hard even for the most ferocious of adventurers.

Located in northern Auratia, Bakra has been affected both environmentally and sociologically by the First Dragon War, with much of the region shattered by a spectacular fight between two legendary dragons. Steep gorges, gigantic waterfalls, and once-mighty cities have fallen to ruin among the zone’s grasslands and forests. The island can be divided into five areas and features three bustling cities; each considered centers for trade and mining. The mining town of Fatoia serves as an important junction for the metal industry, since mineral ores are not only mined but also distributed and traded. With its airships and cable cars that haul both goods and passengers, Fatoia has steadily become a key hub for transport and trade. In Siberna, townsfolk have flawlessly adjusted to the quiet rigors of mining life; however, nearby Omati Gorge poses a threat to Siberna with its multitude of deserted mining pits, which are now inhabited by wild dragons.

SATUMA

Satuma, located in Mangard, which forms the western part of Auratia, is a large plain filled with lakes and rivers and surrounded by high mountains. Water is an important element in the life of Satuma, with many villages populated by fishermen.

During the First Dragon War, numerous battles were fought in Satuma, each changing the wide plains a bit more, eventually turning it into a massive natural lake where all the main rivers in Mangard meet. Notable villages include Hunak, which is located just above the Kylar Abyss, the point where all the rivers in Satuma meet. To the east of Hunak lies an ancient and lush forest, the Ayanah Forest, which is the main source of construction materials in the area but also shelters fierce and terrible Forest Giants. Another source of danger is the ruins of City of Deyarka, now known as the Wolfman Stronghold. Once a fortified city built by the famous evil General Deyarka, it was badly damaged during the First Dragon War and is now home to a dangerous species of sub-humans, the Wolfmen. In contrast, all players will love visiting the bustling, colorful city of Tahkar in northern Satuma, a picturesque town famous for its hospitality, colorful signs and delicious food.

Developed by Runewaker Entertainment, Dragon’s Prophet is a free-to-play MMORPG that transports players to the dragon-filled, beautiful world of Auratia, where they can capture, train and ride dragons. Dragon’s Prophet features an action-based combat system that gives players more realistic battle action gameplay. Set in a realm where dragons roam the land, sea and air, the game lets players align and battle with a variety of dragons as they work to restore order to the land from the evil Black Dragon that has escaped his eternal prison, and is more dangerous than ever.

Rift Lore Question and Answer Session

Rift Lore Question and Answer Session

By Shannon Doyle (Leliah), OnRPG Elder Scribe

Trion recently held a Lore Question and Answer session with community manager Elrar and Captaincursor, Subterranean Lore dweller and Voice of Atrophenious. And while you could watch it if you have an hour to spare I have taken the time to loosely transcribe the questions asked and the answers given. The wording isn’t exact and the tenses change randomly from “I” to “him” referring to Captaincursor as I at times try to more closely capture what he was saying. At times even a direct quote. The questions will be one color, the answers another and finally anything I am saying will be a third color.

How did the bloodstorm come together? With such diverse and conflicting personalities what was the glue that bound them together before coming to Telara?

The prospect of getting more power. Each dragon has different desires. Plus some fear of Regulos.

What’s the deal with Shi-ming?

Something dropped in a book to make the world feel bigger. People grabbed the thread and have run with it. Possibly a trading partner of Port Scion. Possibly fallen, possibly closed borders. We can’t know because we haven’t been there. It’s somewhere across the water.

Are we ever going to see something coming out of a rift that isn’t going to tear our faces off the first chance it gets?

There has been some R&D, so yes there may be some as soon as the next update.

Will we find out where Orphiel disappeared to in the future?

It hasn’t lined up yet but he really wants to do something that explains it.

Does it have to do with Project Omega?

It was in another timeline so it could be anything. So if it does come up it could be in a sliver or an alternate reality of some sort.

Is there anything else you can share about Orphiel?

He’s big, which is part of why he’s been ignored for some time. He’s so big that it’s a case of “go big or go home” sort of thing.

What may happen to Miela?

“I think she’s gone. I don’t like it when someone gets cursed by a being of unspeakable evil and the next day she’s fine.”

When the Gods created the ward they became unable to interfere with the Telara. They had to create the ascended. Now that the ward is broken what does that mean?

The saying of what Gods can and cannot do is always done by mortals. The reason they don’t help more is because they’re Gods. Generally the Gods who interfere tend to be the Gods who you don’t want to be doing so.

Is there any possibility that the Vigil might have ulterior motives?

Continue to believe what you will. Not confirmed or denied!

What is the history behind the Vigil and Bloodstorm?

The Bloodstorm are very powerful adversaries but they aren’t THE adversaries of the Vigil.

What can you tell us about Port Scion?

It has changed from what it was originally intended to be. And it is unlikely we will ever see what is behind the wall other than the warfront because what was originally planned for it has been used for other parts of the game which are now canon. Basically Port Scion has fallen and the earth has been salted.

Where does magic come from?

Its all planar energy. The elemental forces bound together through the will and rituals of the castors. Clerics gain this through some sort of non Telaran power.

Are the dragons actually dead? What happens when they’re destroyed in Telara?

We saw this in 1.4 with the moats of power. They’ve consumed so much planar energy that its trying to find other vessels. Others may be able to harness this so it may not be a good thing.

And this is where he drops a hint of things to come…maybe. I have replayed a small section of the recording several times and when talking about the Bahmi homelands the Cliffs of Rhaza’de he either says “Play test” or “Planar touched. ” I can’t really be sure which but secretly I hope for the first one.

Were the Kelari dark skinned before or after they left Silverwood? And if so why didn’t any High Elves leave with the Kelari?

There weren’t any High Elves until the split. The physical differences happened after that.

The matriarch of pestilence, how did she get so big and why so evil, what is her story?

Dungeon team started the lore on her. It has been discussed using her elsewhere.

The God Engines, what are they and a bit more info about the one in Frozen tempest.

God engines were a classification of empyrean machines that were of such power that they could perform miracles. The sun orb of Pelladane would amplify prayers to gods and spirits. The infinity gate is the pathway to the planes. Its how the planes got into Telara and may be how we go to the planes. There may be others. Crucia made her own god engine, so new ones can be made. But most people making them these days would be villains or Orphiel (who could be either).

Will we ever see the planes?

You can in certain raids now. Can everyone? He won’t commit to anything but would like to.

Whats the lore behind those huge dragon remains in Shimmersand?

The offspring of Maelforge and he wasn’t picky. If you do the quests in Shimmersand it is talked about.

Are the gods omnipotent or are they just powerful planar beings? Would it be possible for an Ascended to become as powerful as them?

No one has yet given the gods stats. Sometimes mystery holds more power.

Theres a tree in Scarwood Reach, the Auldwarden.

He likes to think an elf who was secretly a Greenscale worshiper cursed it and that’s why trolls are all around it. It is a tree.

In our sliver of Telara the lords hall is guarded and said to be abandoned by the Dwarves. But there isn’t much history, tell us more.

It was a great hall of the Dwarves. Borin was from there.

Do the names of the Eth tribes exist?

They are named after the cities. Like the city of Charms which is now Charmers Caldera. A lot of the names are used in stories about the classes.

What is Konstantin protecting?

Roll a Guardian and do the life epic. No spoilers!

How many more times do we get to see Zareph die?

He’s dead dead.

Cyril isn’t into the bad girls and is more duty bound so unlikely to get love soon.

Shyla’s spoken for.

Dendrome is coming. What is it? Why is there a wall there?

The wall is to preserve it. It wasn’t there just to keep people out. You’ll have to play to find out more.

Where are all the children?

Hiding from all the monsters. They aren’t included because of production. He would love to have children in the game to make it feel more real. You just aren’t seeing them.

Will the original heroes that the souls are based on ever be explored?

They already are in the epic stories and more may come in the future.

Can Ascended have children? More on Ascended physiology

They are close enough to mortals that they can do things like have children or get scars. They’re like super powered individuals.

In other words do what you want! Use your imagination.

Are Ascended still being made?

No. But, geography equals time. Basically everything takes place at the same time, no matter when you make your character. All Ascended were created at once.

The red dome in the center of the plaza in Meridian, what is it?

There was the idea of projecting video. It was created, then someone asked who would make the videos and then it didn’t happen. So they added the dome in because it looked cool.

Did Sir Martyn replace Kain?

In terms of his position in the Guardians? I think so, yes.

Atrophinius is about to get some love. What is up with him?

He’s stepped into the role of leadership and hopes to lead his people to leave peacefully and drunkenly with lots of mead.

All that answer was actually done in his voice. Which is awesome.

The entire Q&A session was fantastic. I would highly recommend watching the video just to hear Captaincursor putting on the voice of Atrophinius, which has always been the best voiced character in my opinion. Hopefully there will be more lore Q&A sessions in the future. There are always more questions to ask.

Early Access: Divinity Dragon Commander

Early Access: Divinity Dragon Commander

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-in-Chief

Tired of games where you find yourself sitting behind a desk falling asleep as your mind turns to mush? Think reading Politico and watching CNN is more entertaining than the mindless garbage being pushed out in the gaming world month after month? Well thankfully a small studio from Belgium has just the answer to your boredom as I found out late yesterday evening sitting down behind closed doors with Larian Studios to get hands-on with Divinity Dragon Commander!

So you’re probably wondering what kind of nonsense I’m spouting out about CNN and Politico in relation to a game with gay elves and imps that can barely get their nose over the table to talk to you. Well beyond the cartoony exterior of this title lies real political questions taken straight from politicians from the modern era that will attempt to force the player to react to their personal beliefs while trying to maintain what’s best for ‘The Game.’ By that I of course mean that Larian Studios isn’t just putting you through this to collect datapoints for some study on politics (or are they?). Rather each decision you make will have impact on various factions in the game that may result in events later that decide the fate of your empire. Let’s break this game down into its 3 components to better comprehend this system.

The Commandship – Raven

Welcome to your home away from battle. Though while bombs might not be exploding and the fate of your empire isn’t at the mercy of your APM, some might find this part of the game far more stressful than running the actual army. That’s because as the game progresses and your reputation from success in battle rises (assuming you don’t go down in flames in your first few weeks as leader), you can garner the interest of the various racial factions wishing to use you as their pawn… er join your mighty crusade in the hopes that their personal ambitions are realized and enacted by your eminence.

The factions from left to right include the conservative, though often times unnervingly giddy Undead, the liberal green party Elves, the capitalistic and rather predictable Dwarves, the Libertarian and yet strangely politically savvy Lizards, and the progressive science focused Imps. Between rounds of conquest you’ll be forced to address their randomized issues ranging from gay marriage to breaking and entering principles to political marriages and choose to either agree, disagree, or let the majority of your cabinet decide on the outcome. Players unsure how the respective parties will react or simply shut off from the world outside of video games can also question each council member to get real world opinions on each subject before making their choices. Oh and don’t worry if you ignore them and choose what you feel, they tend to let you know in an animated fashion if you went against their opinion. This is made more impressive by fully voice acted NPCs complete with high quality motion capture models that make you feel like you’re talking to a living being.

The princess you choose can also lead to some fantastically wondrous troubles, though that shouldn’t be a surprise for any married or engaged guys out there reading this. Each princess brings their own questlines from an undead princess wanting to be reborn to a sheltered vegetarian elf princess being exposed to meat for the first time against her people’s wishes. Heck you might even end up in a political conspiracy to assassinate the leader of the Dwarves if you aren’t careful. And since you can only choose one princess this should lead to some great replayability as you take on the game in new ways each time you engage in Dragon Commander.

Finally you will encounter the bar which is similar to the council, except filled with drunks, racists, and testosterone/estrogen raging generals fresh from battle that are just looking for an excuse to punch you in the face. If all goes well with Dragon Commander’s development, these generals will also represent hero units on the battlefield so here’s hoping that pans out and this plays a much bigger role in the overall gameplay by launch. Once you’ve finished settling down the crew and building mortal enemies, it’s time to play some Risk!

[page]

Risk – The Game of Might, Magic, and Trap Cards

The world is a big place and anyone thinking to conquer it is in for a long campaign filled with tragic setbacks and backstabbing politicians. Thankfully this has been simplified in Dragon Commander to a map not unlike the Risk boardgame in which each country and various cut outs of ocean are presented as tiles on the playing field. Here commanders spend their gold in a way that would make a Dwarf cringe as they construct buildings and units, purchase playing cards, and research upgrades to gain an advantage on the battlefield.

As you capture and hold various nations you gain income and population (to be explained in the third segment). This creates a never-ending political gambit of spending money to capture territory to earn more gold to afford units to defend more territory in a game we call the United States government. However just as you’re attempting to expand your influence, various forces will seek to put your uprising down and rush the tale of the Dragon Commander off the map and into the history books.

After you’ve made all your purchases, moved your pieces, and played any territory cards, it’s time to hit enter and pray you’ve out strategized your foes. Their pieces will then move and you will have the option to let events play out automatically or enter battle as your glorious dragon self to make sure events end in your favor.

“If you want something done right…”

RTS Meets FPS Meets Whatever you call it when Dragons get Jet Packs

This part of the game left an impression on me and turned the faces of the various members of Larian Studios red. Or was that just too much wine and setting up the day’s demo at 5am in the morning? Either way it was the most intensive 2v2 battlefield experience I’ve had in an RTS ever. Starcraft and Supreme Commander sure offer tons of strategic value, but it just takes on an entirely new level when you know you’re about to lose a building that will cost you the game, and you can swoop down as a dragon and personally block the assault to stretch the match out a little longer.

Now the kicker to this mode is the battle is not meant to be even. Don’t think you’re all starting with a base and plan to spend the next 10 minutes building collectors and acquiring crystals. Instead each side involved starts with units based on the Risk level map’s piece movement and that’s what you have to work with to win the game. The map selection is randomized so you have to pick up and go with whichever map you end up on and whichever starting point you get and start capturing buildings. Some building points allow you to build community centers to start gaining bonus population (as I mentioned earlier, it’s used as a currency for purchases on the RTS map). Some small buildings exist to build turrets. Larger building points let you build barracks, factories, seaports, and airports for constructing additional units beyond the ones you brought to the battlezone.

The fights are quite unpredictable. If one side planned better in the world overview mode they might have enough units to just rush in and clear the other side out before they even get their first community center off the ground. Some fights might be blocked from happening to begin with by playing certain political cards to delay enemy assaults. Other fights might offer one team a one-sided advantage due to cards played to add additional units at the start or add additional skills to compliment your dragon. But when the fights are relatively even… fireworks happen. Huge battles of multiple unit types clashing in chokepoints. Zeppelins and Air Balloons clashing with Ironclads over contested naval ports. Every unit will feel familiar and yet unique and you truly get to enjoy them on a whole new level when burning through them in your dragon form at mach speeds thanks to a resource guzzling rocket pack on your back.

Although much balance and AI tweaking is needed prior to launch, we did experience an epic match where both sides’ resources were completely drained to the point that it became a 2 on 2 dragon royal in which the best FPS player would win. Yet even here tactics matter as not every dragon is built equally with some sacrifice the strength of their units to bolster their personal power. So players that go support with their dragon had better try to use their advantage while they can or face an uphill battle against a statically more powerful dragon commander in the end. I have to say just when I thought I had seen it all, this game comes out of nowhere and blindsided me with a mode so original and so well done that I just wanted to throw my money at them on the spot.

The Aftermath

So what happens when the dust settles and the mighty Dragon Commander settles back on the Raven? Assuming your capital is still standing, the entire process repeats. The Rivellon Times newspaper reports on the events of the round and the level of support you are garnering from the various racial factions while rewarding gold, influence, and if you’re lucky, powerful cards to use in future battles. Then you’re off to the council to see how the game has progressed.

The game brings so much to the table for so many types of players. I’m glad to live at a time where titles have returned to their roots where story matters yet with modern technology where FPS RTS hybrids can be so well executed. And the best news of the day was we would be seeing this title launched prior to PAX Prime so my dragon commanding days need only wait a few months longer before I can turn to the skies.

Divinity: Dragon Commander

Divinity Dragon Commander takes your standard RTS elements and puts you at the top of a massive empire bent on world domination. Rally the various racial factions under your banner, acquire powerful cards to influence the tides of war, and blow the winds of war into your favor by any means necessary.

Features

Multiplayer RTS/Turn-Based Elements: Take on fellow Dragon Commanders to test your militaristic leadership in Risk-styled gameplay combined with RTS battlefields.

The Mothership – Raven: Discuss political issues of the day, plan research and upgrades, and meet with your generals in dynamic and randomized events between battles that will test your political prowess and garner you favors that may be the deciding factor in your quest for world domination… or your downfall.

Turn-Based World Map – Manage your empire from a national scale, ordering troop engagement, setting factory queues, accessing parliament, spending gold, and playing cards to improve the chances in your coming engagements.

RTS Battlefield: Engage in one of many maps in up to four player skirmishes to gain control of new territory and bolster your empire’s revenue and resources. Events played out in the turn-based world map offer various advantages and disadvantages making prior planning vital. And when the chips are down, unleash your dragon form to take on a FPS style king piece as you personally blast your enemy’s units from your path.
