Blacklight Retribution Dropzone Update
Check out the New Map, Dropzone. This flashback to Zombie Studios’ Blacklight: Tango Down is perfect for close to mid-range gameplay. Dropzone Takes place on a metropolitan roundabout in the aftermath of the Onslaught. Players will find the tight congested street a perfect place to lay an ambush for the unsuspecting Agent. Those daring enough to take the high ground surrounding the statue will find good vantage points from which to snipe Rival Agents in hiding. Because of the map’s small size, gameplay will be fast and frenetic. Hide from snipers inside a domed glass enclosure, or take the fight to streets filled with kill zones and chokepoints perfect for traps. The Drop Zone map supports the following game modes: DM, TDM, KOTH, LMS, LTS, S+D, CTF.
New Level Cap
Experience 10 more levels of fast paced gameplay with the Dropzone Update as the level cap goes from 40 to 50. Along the way pick up brand new titles and camouflage, including the Bearded Ops novelty camo.
New Gear Items
Take the fight straight to your enemies with two new melee focused items. The Riot Shield allows you to get up close and personal safely, while the Sonic Tomahawk promises a one hit kill against most builds. If you prefer to stay at a safe distance, the Thermal Protection gear will mask your heat signature from snipers relying on Infrared Scopes, and the Cloak Mk.2 will mask you from sight and infrared scopes.
Star Trek Online Interview with Daniel Stahl
Questions By Shannon Doyle (Leliah), OnRPG Journalist
Answers by Daniel Stahl, Executive Producer, Star Trek Online
What happens when you get the biggest Star Trek geek in OnRPG to interview Daniel Stahl from Star Trek Online? Geekery to 11! We talk about everything from Las Vegas to time travel. See it all for yourself below.
Hi there, thanks so much for taking some time answer some questions about Season 8 and where STO is headed in the future. But before we dive into all of that could you introduce yourself please and tell us what you do on Star Trek Online.
Greetings! My name is Daniel Stahl and my role is Executive Producer on Star Trek Online. My ultimate responsibility is creating a path forward that accomplishes the goals of the product as well as the desires of the customers. This includes managing the game studio unit responsible for the title as well as coordinating with our licensor CBS and our publishing teams at Perfect World.
Season 8 is coming up soon. There was a fantastic State of the Game recently which really only teased that Season 8 would be on its way. Can you tell us a bit more about what we can expect to see during the Season?
Most of the development in our recently released expansion, Legacy of Romulus, was focused on a new faction and new early level content. In Season 8, we will be shifting gears back to end game progression and rewards. This will also give us a chance to move the story forward and get us closer to where we want to go next in the Galaxy.
However, prior to Season 8 we will be introducing a few new updates that will help set the stage. With the amazing new tutorials for the Romulans and Klingons, the older Federation tutorial was feeling very dated. We’ve had designers hard at work on revamping the first few levels of the Federation captain’s journey. This includes new environments and a new Federation ship interior that is much more in line with the ship hallways you’ve seen in Legacy of Romulus.
We also have a very special Feature Episode, similar to Temporal Ambassador, which will act as a prequel to Season 8. This episode will directly follow the events that unfolded in the Romulan Reputation cut-scenes and will end with a sneak peak at what is coming in Season 8.
So if you’re looking for some more details on Season 8, you’ll definitely want to check out the Feature Episode releasing in September.
Space Adventure Zone. That sounds really awesome. Can you tell us a bit more about what they entail?
All of the Adventure Zones introduced in Star Trek Online have thus far been focused on Ground Missions. These zones include the Borg invasion on Defera, the Tholians on Nukara, and the exploration of New Romulus.
In Season 8, we will be introducing our first space Adventure Zone, adding new persistent areas to explore in your starship. Think “Sector Space” with built in combat and fleet actions. Not only will there be solo missions, but captains in the same zones can group together and take on challenging enemies lurking about in the environment, without having to leave the zone or go into an instance.
In addition, these new zones will be in an environment that has never before been seen in Star Trek Online. It will be much more visually interesting than flying around in deep space.
8 Seasons. This will be a Star Trek record. None of the TV shows ever made it to Season 8. How does that make you feel about STO and all that has been accomplished so far?
It feels great! It is a testament to the power of Star Trek. Every series has had its issues out of the gate and Star Trek Online certainly had a few of its own. However, the underlying themes are still there and the more you are able to focus and expand on the concept of “Star Trek”, the more it grows on you and the more you become invested in the events that are transpiring in this fictional galaxy. While we’re only in our third year as an online game, we certainly hope to be still making STO in 2018. There is still so much to explore!
Viva Las Vegas! Star Trek Online will be returning to Star Trek Las Vegas this year! What sorts of things can we expect to see if we are attending? And for those of us not as lucky, will we be able to see the panels online?
We are very excited to be invited back to the grand slam event in Las Vegas for a second year in a row. Similar to last year’s panel, we’ll have a group of developers on stage talking about the last year in STO as well as some hints and teaser screenshots for the future.
In addition, this year Denise Crosby will be joining us for a second panel to specifically talk about her work in STO reprising both Tasha Yar and Empress Sela. It will be the first time a cast member has joined one of our panels. It will be fantastic and hopefully a good omen for the future.
We’re still working out details with Creation on whether or not we’ll be able to present any video footage from the convention, but you can at least look forward to a recap if you are unable to join us on August 9th and 10th.
Gateway is coming. This has already seen huge success in Neverwinter. How will it be changed up for Star Trek Online?
The Gateway team has been hard at work on adding more and more STO functionality to the site. This year we are hoping to add in many of the features that you see on Neverwinter, possibly to include the Mail and Inventory system, the Exchange, and possibly even the reputation system and Dilithium Exchange.
We also have several prototypes underway which may end up being entirely new mini-games that tie directly into your career and provide fun new ways to explore Star Trek Online when you’re not directly in game. It is a little early to be talking details about these games, but by this time next year, we expect there to be far more to do on Gateway.
Three words, Romulan Temporal Vessel. Tell us all of the things! Really though, there has been some big excitement around the Temporal Vessel, what can you tell us about it?
Romulan Captains now have a chance to get the R’Mor Temporal Science Vessel when they open Temporal Lock Boxes. This time ships is similar in powers to the other time ships, however it is an entirely new visual ship design that also has a mirror universe version. You can read more about this ship in the recently released Dev Blog. We should also mention that we wanted to get this ship out in time for the All Lock Box drop event happening now until August 15th.
Are there any other awesome ships that are being worked on right now that you can tell us about? Or maybe the sort of “if we told you we’d have to kill you” sort of things? (Please, no killing)
We’ll keep the settings on stun and talk about the exclusive new alien ship that we are working on as a special reward for completing the new Feature Episode releasing in September.
This ancient, full-Carrier vessel uses subspace technology and was created by an alien race that may be related to the Iconians. As captains venture into the new feature episode, they’ll learn more about where this ship comes and get a chance to captain it in combat.
Star Trek offers such a rich and long standing lore, how does the team decide where to take Star Trek Online next?
With literally hundreds of Star Trek episodes and books, there is a never ending galaxy of options of where to go next. So far we have been focusing on areas close to home and the star systems seen in the TV shows. However, as we move forward, there is nothing stopping us from going outside of known space, or even outside the Milky Way Galaxy.
There are some additional factors to consider when deciding what comes next. We try to focus on popular species, locations, or technologies that were seen in the show but have yet to make it into the game.
We even post polls for our community to weigh in on where we should go next. The poll at the end of the last State of the Game blog asked which series’ ships, species, and stories would they like to see more of. With Voyager so far in the lead, we’ve been taking a close look at what we could do in the Delta Quadrant for a future expansion.
I would like to turn the final question from the State of the Game on its head and ask you, What Star Trek series’ ships, characters, and stories would you most like to see in a future STO expansion?
Well, I voted Voyager as well because of a few reasons. It is on the other side of the galaxy and would require adding more sectors to the game. There were also many different alien species that the Voyager crew encountered that would be fun to put in the game. That entire area of space is outside of the typical UFP / KDF jurisdiction and may add some interesting political challenges for a Starship travelling so far from home.
That sounds like fun to me!

Age of Wushu – Legends of Mount Hua Launch Q&A
Questions by Jordan Hall (ApocaRUFF), OnRPG Journalist
Answers by Tyler Rawlins, Producer at Snail Games
There is lots of excitement surrounding the new expansion coming to Snail Games USA’s Age of Wushu, named Legends of Mount Hua after an important part of Wuxia lore. Not only is it including a bulk of PVE content, such as instances and world PVE bosses. But it also includes a bunch of PVP content for those cold bloody killers who want more rewards for killing, such as a MOBA-style arena gamemode. Perhaps one of the most meaningful additions will be the new Mentor system, that will allow experienced veterans to speed up the cultivating of new players, giving them both rewards in the process. Thankfully, Tyler Rawlins, Producer at Snail Games, took the time to answer all of our questions and clear-up a few things concerning the expansion and the changes to the game that it will bring.
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Tyler Rawlins, Producer at Snail Games.
Can you elaborate on what it is that you do at Snail Games USA?
Snail Games USA (SGUSA) helps bring the vast library of games that Snail Game China has created to North American audiences.
The new expansion, Legends of Mount Hua, brings a lot of new stuff to the game. What are you most excited about concerning its release?
There is so much to be excited about. A tutoring system for our experienced players to help newer ones, a MOBA style battleground for heroes to enter and compete. I am probably most excited for the Mount Hua Competition itself. It has a “Bloodsport” and “Highlander” feel where players across the server widdle the competitors down to a few before the competition officially begins, then a spectacle where everyone can watch and be rewarded in game.
One thing that caught my eyes while looking over the features list for the expansion was the “MOBA-like” PVP game mode. What makes it MOBA-like and what sorts of rewards or bonuses will we get for participating?
The arena setup is similar to that of all your traditional MOBA titles. Lanes, turrets (siege weapons), and minion/creep/cannon fodder troops. Players take their main hero into the arena and compete with one of two battle factions and upgrade abilities in a stand-alone format. After, you leave the way you came in, but are rewarded cultivation, items, and the chance to earn a new skill set.
Can you tell us a bit about the new instance being added? Will there be the player assassins like in other instances?
The Yanmen Pass let’s players choose from a few different stories to play through the instance. Assassins are still in effect, but players can take part in not only different difficulty settings this time, but different points of view too.
I’m not sure if I read it right, but it’s possible for players to win rewards just from watching competitors in the Mount Hua Competition?
At the end of each round, a School is selected by the server. The School represents one of the schools that a competitor belongs to. 3 sets of skills will be randomly chosen from that school and sent to a few lucky spectators during that round. This is to encourage players to watch and learn what it takes to become a better martial artist in certain scenarios by studying the skills of those in this elite competition.
What rewards can the actual competitors and winners of the competition win?
The main reward is a special title and exclusive fashion set of mythical status. The top 5 will be rewarded different outfits and weapons skins to walk around and strike aww or fear in others they encounter.
As for the new treasures and artifacts, will we be able to gain these through random encounters or will they be restricted to boss drops?
The treasures can be acquired from instance boss drops / world PvE (the newly introduced Jianghu Hero System) where an elite mob will appear after slaying a number of normal spawns in one area, measured by an event bar. We also offer players the option of exchanging treasure through the cash shop item “Fire Washing Platform.”
New skill-sets are being added, such as the Astonishing Goose Blade. Will these new skill-sets be balanced with the older school-based sets? Or are they intentionally going to be more powerful?
These skills will only be as powerful as the player makes them and typically more useful in specific situations. Right now these skills are no longer being sold in shops, but rather rewarded with certain events and arenas so players have more ways to be rewarded and more cause to explore the many areas of the game.
The mentor system sounds like it will be a lot of fun. Can you explain it a bit and tell us if there will be any content (such as mini-instances) that will only be available to teachers and students with the release of the expansion, or maybe in the future?
Brand new players (with no internal level learned at all) will be able to apprentice under a maxed internal skill player. There won’t be any exclusive content, but both the apprentice and mentor will receive substantial rewards for completing instances, influence challenges together, and earn internal skill progression rewards (every 5 levels for the apprentice).
NA players have been hearing about the marriage system that is available in the Chinese version for a while now. Will that system be added into the game with this expansion, or can we expect that at a later date?
If the Marriage was included with Legends of Mount Hua, that may have been the feature I would be most excited for. Sadly, that has been pushed back a bit, but not too far into the future. I really can’t wait to see that on our servers and witness all the parades and parties…and party crashing involved.
Will the expansion come packed with bug fixes? Such as exploit fixes, translation improvements and additions, etc?
There are a lot of new additions which will be the primary focus of the expansion. We are constantly updating the localization still and the exploits are always being addressed. We recently incorporated a system with our gold purchasing to try and curb some of the extreme examples in game. Since that is still new we want to see how it goes before moving on infighting those.
From a player’s perspective, player numbers have been getting quite low in the recent month and players from certain servers (White Tiger and Black Tortoise, for example) have been asking to have their servers merged. However, you are about to release a new server called Golden Kirin. Is there any plan to merge low-population servers together, or are you hoping that the new content from the expansion will bring back old players?
With all the new content, we want to encourage a new start for players with the Golden Kirin server launch. New players can start fresh with others, returning players can knock off the rust a bit, and experienced players can start over and try new ideas in their training. Down the line, merges may be investigated more. Without community and economy depending on each other in game, low populations will be a major detriment.
Thank you again for your time. Is there anything else you would like to share with the readers?
