Early Access: Race To Mars

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor) OnRPG Journalist

I’ve said it multiple times before, using a kickstarter project as an indie developer is the future of launching your game. Especially in these difficult times, indie developers are having it rough, it’s not easy getting a publisher for your game and that’s why a kickstarter is the only option for people to help you out. One of these games is Race To Mars, and I was one of the lucky few that got my hands on a very early build that’s far from being in Alpha but still gives us a general look of what the game is about.

Race to Mars Base

Race To Mars is a turn-based, space company simulation game. As a player, you are the head of a company and your goal is to go to Mars. Unfortunately this is easier said than done, and in a strategy game as you can imagine, takes a lot of time and planning. When you begin, your company is still very small, and you have choices to make, you have to accept simple contracts and use the money that you earn into bigger and more promising projects until you are able to try and go to the mystical planet of Mars. And you cannot expect to go from minor company to interplanetary travel service in an hour. No it will take a while before you are ready to even attempt a trial launch. Your company has a reputation to maintain and competition to shame as you find the most efficient route. And the competition is stiff. As the game progresses you need to interact with multiple contractors and other space related organizations to build the best team and keep your competition playing catch-up.

The team behind Race To Mars ‘Intermarum’ is a small independent game development studio based in a little city called Opole, in Poland. Currently only one third of the goal is pledged and Race to Mars is in serious need of more backers before this Saturday when the pledging ends. As in any Kickstarter project they have several goals that they want to spend their pledged money on. Just like the goal of their game, they wish to push past the general economic building tactics title and reach into detailed customization options including crafting buildings, and ship concepts/models. A more expanded technology tree is written in the stars along with other general features to give players more strategic options as their game progresses. Since their goal with the title is to educate the general populace of the challenges involved with commercial space flight, they intend to keep the game true to the real world challenges as they expand your control. Together with the scientists of the Polish space industry Kosmonauta they hope to achieve a space-port management sim that’s both true to reality but approachable for the common strategy gamer. The game itself will be made on the leading multiplatform game engine Unity, ensuring plenty of cross-platform possibilities and easy flexible tools to mold Race to Mars exactly as they envision it.

Race to Mars Models

Conclusion

The endless universe that we live in has always been an inspiring thing to think about. As a big fan of strategy and simulator games, Race To Mars sounds promising and the blueprint is in place to create a fantastic title. I must say again, what I had access to was a pre-alpha build and is badly in need of further funding and polish to have a chance of competing in today’s market. Unfortunately these are tough times as an independent developer. The rising popularity of Kickstarter has lured plenty of near finished titles to the platform to get additional funding that isn’t necessarily needed. I stress that Race to Mars is not such a title and will need a dedicated backing to become a reality. If you are a big fan of games that not only involve the managing of the company, but also going into space, then this game is definitely something to look forward to. And if you can spare a few bucks, make sure to pledge as every dollar counts.

Dead Simon Talks RIFT F2P 1 Month(ish) Later

Rift has been free to play for just over a month now. I wanted to find out how it had been going so far so I got in touch with Rift’s “Dead Simon” Ffinch who happened to be packing up for his yearly summer trip to his favorite Telaran fishing hole. I got to talk to him about F2P and the future of Rift, including the upcoming summer event.

RIFT F2P Interview

Free to Play

How successful has the Rift F2P conversion been?

Extremely successful and it has really surpassed all our expectations.

How has the Rift community taken to F2P?

During the period after the announcement before we went free-to-play, there was quite a bit of concern from our community about whether we would change the game and whether it would become pay to win, but having now been a free-to-play game for a little over a month, there has pretty much been a universal turnaround within our community being extremely positive about the change and many of them going out of their way to help and welcome new players.

RIFT Bahmi Summer

Summer Event

Can we expect anything new in the summer event this year? And to that end, when will the summer event be?

The summer event will be towards the end of July and there are new outfits available on the store including swimming costumes! The scavenger hunt has been extended to include all of the Storm Legion zones and people will find new things to do including the infamous changing labyrinth, but this is not required content.

Of course this was asked early last week before Trion had officially announced the event. Now we know that Summerfest will begin on July 25th, will include an encounter with Swarmlord Khargoth and his zonewide swarm events along with some new rare companions, and a new title. There will even be a chance to win credits as part of the daily login gifts. All of this on top of the fishing, camping, and swimming already in game.

Rift Fourth Event

Beyond The Summer

Can you tell us any plans for 2.4 or beyond?

Yes, 2.4 is all about instances and it includes two new raids for two players: a brand new level 60 dungeon for five players, which is a retelling of the realm of the Fae and two new chronicles that are two person dungeons. Beyond that, we have an aggressive and exciting schedule of updates and we plan to continue delivering new content frequently just as we have for the 2 1/2 years Rift has been out.

Of course we learned last month that update 3.0 would be taking taking players to the Plane of Water which will have several zones, dungeons, and other exciting things for our fellow air breathers. You can still find the video where this was all revealed on Trion’s Twitch page but it will take you two and a half hours to get through it all. So, what all else will 3.0 bring? A bigger role for companions, item advancement, new souls, and more interaction inside dimensions. Fishing rifts, and a solo Chronicle which will be solo and not completely focused on combat.

RIFT Interview End

There you have it. Though many were once screaming doom and gloom as Rift announced it was moving to the free to play model it seems Rift is still going strong and has made believers of those skeptics. It is clear there is still a lot of life left in Rift and a lot to look forward to. And I cannot wait to see it.

World of Warcraft Film Teased At SDCC

World of Warcraft Children's Week 2

At this weekend’s San Diego Comic Con those who attended the Legendary/Warner Bros panel got a treat no one expected, the first teaser for the World of Warcraft film. Fans have waited years, living off rumors and hope but it seems that their dreams may finally come true. The panel primarily focused on Godzilla, and sadly no video has popped up yet but the fine folks at io9 have given a wonderful description of the World of Warcraft teaser.

“The footage showcased an alien-looking landscape full of rocky outcroppings, where a sweaty unshaven figure in armor is drinking water from a leather pouch. There’s a cage with rocks in it, a squeaking noise, green lightning in the sky. The man tosses the water pouch on the ground, and draws his sword with a loud ringing sound. He takes a shield from an armored skeleton, and bangs his sword against it.

And then you see the massive arm of a… creature… heading towards him. We glimpse the green skin and some of the armor, and then finally we get an extreme closeup of the orc as it raises its axe and brings it down onto the man’s head.

And director Duncan Jones came out and told the crowd that he always wanted to make movies where “you delve into fantasy” — and this project is a dream come true, because he gets to create a whole world. And he announced that he starts filming in early 2014.”

Even if you aren’t a fan of World of Warcraft this will be an interesting film to follow as it could open up the floodgates for films based on MMOs.
