Dragon’s Prophet Press Preview

By Jordan Hall (ApocaRUFF), OnRPG Journalist

Yesterday I was invited to attend a press tour of Runewaker’s upcoming F2P MMORPG, Dragon’s Prophet. Being published by SOE in North America, they were the hosts of the event and took several journalist into the game. This is great as I’ve had my eye on this title for quite a while so I was excited to finally get my hands on it. Better yet, the journalist who attended the event are not bound by NDA and are allowed the chance to write a preview of the game based on their experience in the tour. This is my account of what I found during the hour or so I got to play.

A Beautiful World

Dragon’s Prophet is a great looking game, I don’t think anyone can deny that. While they may not be as high quality as what you would get from a single player experience, they are on par with other F2P MMOs coming out this year. I took a lot of scenery shots during the tour and filled up my screenshots folder to the brim and I’ll include some of my favorites in this article. The dragons look great, and each one I saw had its own unique design. They weren’t just re-skins of the same model, either.

Dragon's Prophet Press Preview

That’s not to say that the game doesn’t have its graphic-related problems, which is to be expected from a Closed Beta title. In one area that I was taken to during the tour, I saw a propeller up in the sky, just turning away. It wasn’t attached to anything, but there was a very nice looking airship right above it. Another thing I ran into was a giant green exclamation mark floating above my head whenever I got on my dragon. I am sure these issues will be ironed out soon enough, so I am not worried about them.

Dragon's Prophet Graphics

Speaking of Dragons…

There are a lot of them. I was told that there are currently over one-hundred-and-fifty tameable dragons that players can capture. On top of that, there are also over a hundred more in the world that can be fought. Keeping in mind that these are all fairly unique, it’s an impressive number. It kind of reminds me of Pokemon with all the variety.

Dragon's Prophet Air Mount

There are a lot of different types of dragons, too. There are ground-based dragons, flying, swimming, big and tanky, small and agile, all of the ranges are covered. To give even more variety, each dragon offers helpful abilities that you gain access to when you tame them. And just because two dragons are of the same type does not guarantee a certain set of abilities; I tamed two of the same type and found that they had access to different abilities for me to use. I’m glad it won’t be as simple as taming a dragon and moving on, you’ll want to try and tame and maybe re-tame until you get the abilities you want.

Dragon's Prophet Dragon Mount Ground

Dragons can act as mounts and companions in a fight. Although, some dragons cannot act as mounts, from what I saw. I am unsure if some dragons serve as mounts only but so far I haven’t come across any. When you summon a dragon to fight with you, it begins consuming a pool of points called Dragon Soul. This is shown as a yellow bar under your health and mana, and can be regenerated over time or by hitting an enemy.

Dragon's Prophet Dragon Fighting

Taming dragons also consumes your Dragon Soul points, and is accomplished by playing a mini-game. You jump on a dragon’s back and struggle against it. During this struggle, your Dragon Soul points are consumed, and you try to keep the dragon head icon inside the inner-circle so that you generate more of the red bar on the right (as seen in the screenshot). If you reach a certain threshold of red bar, you tame the dragon. When asked about the difficulty of taming dragons, we were told that the higher level dragons get harder to tame, and the lower level you are compared to the dragon, the further difficulty grows exponentially, so you won’t be going out and taming some epic dragon right after making your character – you’ll have to work towards it.

Dragon's Prophet Taming

After taming a dragon, you can take it to your dragon lair. In the lair, you will be able to train your dragon using an interesting system where you pay money to have your dragon complete processes over the course of a few hours. This means you can train your dragons when you go to bed for the night, or when you know you won’t be getting on for a while. And training is not the only thing you can set your dragon to do; you can also make it go gather resources for you so that you can craft. Another interesting feature was the ability to transfer skills between dragons.

Dragon's Prophet Dragon Lair

The Combat

It’s actually quite fun. It uses an action-based system that feels somewhat like a target-based hybrid. The enemy that is directly in front of you becomes ‘targeted’ with a red glow and that is where your character will try to hit. However, any enemy nearby can also get hit by your attacks, which makes for some great fights. One thing that took a tiny bit of getting used to is that your character will not move while attacking, but you can easily move between attacks to change your position and avoid enemy hits. I noticed that the ranged users on the tour stood still a lot more than the melee users, and that they had abilities that could knock enemies away from them.

Dragon's Prophet Combat 1

We got to take on a couple of epic bosses as well. One was spawned at the end of a zone event, and the thing was colossal. Just as everyone in the zone worked together to complete the event to this point, everyone joined in to kill the massive dragon in front of us. To be blunt, the encounter felt epic. We also got to take on another dragon that was within an instance. It required us to swim through a semi-hidden passage to get to it, and was just as big or bigger than the guy we had fought outside the cave instance.

Dragon's Prophet Boss Fight

My concern about combat was that the limited amount of time you can have a dragon out combined with the fact that you aren’t able to move while attacking, would make for a lackluster experience. However, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the combat and did not notice any issues. I am guessing the developers have their own reasons for choosing this system, and I’m guessing there is some merit to the choice considering that Neverwinter is also going with a stand-still combat system. Movement in combat is still a big part of the tactics; I could quickly move away if I needed to, and I even had a dash move that I could use to get away from a blow. Yeah, standing still while you swing your weapon or cast you spell doesn’t sound too fun on paper, but it works well in the actual game.

Dragon's Prophet Combat 2

Progressing Your Character and Dragon

Progression seems to be accomplished primarily by quests, which you can find by looking for exclamation marks over the heads of NPCs. When asked, I believe we were told that the level range would be in the sixties. It was said that for a regular gamer who is putting in a few hours a day, it can take as long as a month to reach the lower-forties in level, with the amount of time and effort needed to get that far still being tweaked. When you level up, you get some points that you can spend on your character’s stats and after a certain point you begin getting points to spend on a talent tree, which you will be able to fill up approximately halfway by max level.

Dragon's Prophet Character Progress

When looking at the lair, I also saw that there was the ability to choose the stats of your dragon. You gain experience to level up your dragon by having him train at the lair, and you can spend the points gained by leveling up into five stats. This means you might need to spend some time away from your dragons so that they can reach their full potential. I like the idea of this type of progression for dragons, as it gives you the chance to continue to progress even while you are offline. It seems like it would be quite convenient.

Crafting…

I didn’t get a chance to actually try crafting in the game, but our tour guide did walk us through the basics. There are six crafting skills that range from alchemy, to cooking, to blacksmithing. You get the resources from crafting by either collecting them from nodes spread out around the world or by sending your dragons to collect it for you. I noticed a Station Cash icon on the crafting window, but I am not sure what effect using the Station Cash has on the crafting process. To be honest, it looked like your typical “collect X of X to make Y using Z” system that almost all MMORPGs have, so there really isn’t anything new here.

Dragon's Prophet Crafting

Conclusion

The game seems to be coming along quite nicely. While the Frontier still isn’t present in the game, and likely won’t be until open beta or full launch, the rest of the gameplay is solid. I feel that Pokemon fans, or people who like the monster-capture genre in general, will have a blast in this game. Hopefully the questing-progression for your character will not make the game boring, as the combat is fantastic and the dragons are a blast. Be sure to check out OnRPG at DP’s launch as I’ll be giving the game a detailed look at how far it’s progressed.

SMITE Introduces Twitch.TV Integration with Ne Zha Patch

SMITE integrates Twitch.tv

HiRez once again shows its dedication towards improving their latest title and one of the newest MOBAs on the market, SMITE. The patch being introduced this week to bring the 34th god, Ne Zha, into the fold is set to also introduce new active items including Blink to help players engage in ganks or jump into already started team battles and catch their enemies off guard. This should be an indirect buff to gods lacking gap closers. Shielded Recall allows players to ignore interrupts and return to base to balance out for the many gods capable of using skills to disengage from battle. Motivate and Portal are also receiving major changes to make them much more viable options.

In addition the much anticipated integration with Twitch.tv has finally hit SMITE! Now players without a lick of an idea how to livestream should be able to show off their friends their skills all the while chatting with their audience with an option built directly into the client. HiRez is further pushing this new feature by offering rewards for minutes streamed! This is welcome news alongside some improvements to their spectator mode features.

Check out their official site for a full list of the patch notes.

EverQuest – Shadow of Fear Press Event

By MerryQuiteContrary, OnRPG Journalist

 Everquest Shadow of Fear Preview

Recently I had the opportunity to discuss Shadow of Fear, the second instalment in EverQuest’s 19th expansion Reign of Fear, with the EQ development team. The team included Thom Terrazas (producer), Jonathan Caraker (lead designer), Julie Burness (assistant lead game designer) and Douglas Cronkhite (assistant lead game designer). It was immediately clear that this team loves their game and enjoys discussing it. Not only do they love their game but they seem to really understand how vital their playerbase is to the development of EverQuest, citing the enormous amount of feedback.

Everquest Shadow of Fear Chelsith Reborn

EverQuest had its 14th anniversary on March 16th and as part of the celebration have released the second chapter in the Reign of Fear expansion which was released in November 2012. Shadow of Fear features two new zones: Chelsith Reborn and Plane of Shadow. These two new zones are meant for level 100. Chelsith Reborn is a mysterious new Shissar city that has made a sudden appearance. It is unclear as to why or how it has appeared. It will be up to the player to figure it out. Also included is an arena which boasts ten different champions to fight. Julie assured us that the loot would be well worth the risk of taking on these champions. As well as the new zones there are new and powerful spells, raid content, quests and missions, achievements and enhanced AA lines.

What the team seemed the most excited about however was the Plane of Shadow or as Thom puts it, “Plane of Shadow is kickass”. The Plane of Shadow was once two planes: light and dark. The beings of these planes fought each other constantly but eventually came together, using their combined energy, to form the Plane of Shadow. It is here in the Plane of Shadow that the god Luclin lives. Luclin is the balance between light and dark. This will be the first time in game the players have met Luclin. What is particularly exciting about Luclin is her custom appearance, animations and wait for it…voice overs! When asked if there will be more voice overs to come Thom responded with, “yes, you betcha” This is great news for EverQuest fans.

Not only was the team eager to talk about the new content but also to describe how they are working on the continual delivery of story-the making of history within the game. Thom says, “We are working better and we are delivering better” and that more story will be coming, “soon™”.

  Everquest Shadow of Fear Luclin

It is exciting times to be playing EverQuest and one thing is certain and that is that I need to get to levelling. See you in game!

Powerful Protectors Summoned For The Lost Titans Open Beta Launch

Lost Titans

Calling upon the vigilant Warriors of Light, ZQGame today announced that its mythology themed, free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing browser game, The Lost Titans, is entering its open beta phase.

The Lost Titans gives players a fresh take on old mythological tales. As a newly trained Warrior of Light, characters that players control, players must find their way through an epic, continuous storyline, inspired by real Egyptian, Greek and Roman mythologies. Journeying through the world of Aristos, players are tasked with saving their Titan Ruler, Hyperion, and the land, from Titan Ophion’s destruction and betrayal.

Lost Titans

The Lost Titans launched its first beta phase on November 29, 2012, and this second beta gives players access to plenty of new content, including new pets, mounts, zones, bosses and additional player-vs-player (PvP) features to an already expansive next-gen browser game. Moreover, this next beta phase increases the player’s maximum level cap to 85 from 75, offering a more balanced in-game economy and better player progression.

“More than 200,000 registered users participated in our first beta and our community has played a large role in the development of The Lost Titans. The new additions and updates in this open beta phase were a direct result of the exceptional player engagement and feedback,” said Justin Lin, lead producer of The Lost Titans. “With its client-level graphics and action-packed gameplay, The Lost Titans is setting a new standard for browser games, and we have even more stories and refinements planned for the future.”

Lost Titans

Key updates include:

  • CORE OF ARISTOS: Ophion has been mining the magical power in Aristos, and the entrance to the Core of Aristos has recently been discovered. Players must venture deeper into the core, fight their way to the ultimate boss, and avenge Lord Hyperion.
  • ZEUS’ FURY BATTLEGROUND: Saddle your mounts and ready your weapons! During this new event, players will fight new bosses and other players all at the same time. Additionally, they’ll have to take on Punishers, a new group of high-level monsters that may require Warriors of Light to band together for victory.
  • DUEL OF THE PROTECTORS: This new PvP feature allows players to challenge an opponent and “Duel.” The winner gets bragging rights and a reward.
  • RITE OF PASSAGE: A revamped beginners’ area, where all players are now inducted into the Order of of Light. Players must prove their worth as a Warrior of Light by facing the trapped water demon.
  • FORTUNA’S WHEEL: Spin to win and give luck a whirl! “Fortuna’s Wheel” is a new, roulette-styled event, where players can win any of the following rewards: Nether Rocket Fragments, Blue WarSouls, Mount Souls, Silver, Gold, Brilliant Shards, Faction Points, and Star Lucks.
  • NEW MOUNTS: Travel through Aristos at top-speed on “Nether Rocket,” a new mount obtained only through Fortuna’s Wheel.
  • NEW PETS: Players can now adopt new pets, including “Pogo,” the cuddly panda, “Minifinny,” the mini-Finback, and the alluring “Stormfell” fairy.
  • UPDATED VIP SYSTEM: The VIP system has been expanded and modified to be more accessible; players VIP 1 – VIP 12 will be rewarded with new economic and aesthetic perks.

Open beta features will become available tonight at 7 p.m. PDT exclusively on the new Olympus server for those starting new games. Previous servers will not be wiped and players are still able to access prior content.

Lost Titans

In addition to being highly customizable, and specially designed to be accessible to all types of players, The Lost Titans uses a proprietary game engine to introduce client-quality performance and effects to the browser game. These features distinguish The Lost Titans as the first AAA browser game for core and casual players alike.

The Lost Titans will be commercially available later this year.  The game is free-to-play, with optional in-game micro-transactions, and accessible on major PC browsers with minimal downloads.

Age of Wushu: Book Fight Club

Skill books in Age of Wushu are sought after more than any other item. They are the way to grow in power. Learning new skills add new weapons to your arsenal, new options to move in combat, and more. Coming across these items is not as easy as having a Ming Dynasty library card though. A popular method of achieving books and creating a reputation among peers is Robbing Scripts.

Because of the danger involved, script stealing is reserved for players that have some experience in game. After joining a school and reaching the level of Novice, a player can participate in the daily event. At 7pm Server Time scripts will appear in a designated school. To accept the task, talk with your Library Guard of your school and teleport to the scene where the scripts are located. Simply infiltrate the school, steal the books, and run back home with the book bag loaded with new skills. Simple, right?

Along the way are some player obstacles you will encounter thought. Schools are made aware when they are the target of the day for stealing. This creates a difficult arrangement when fighting through players protecting their teachings from outside fighters. In addition to live players, NPCs will also step into the fray and honor their sect.

Once you’ve got a book and made it out of the school grounds, you are not clear of danger. Another player, perhaps even a friend can strike you down and take the books for themselves. These precious bound chests hold the most powerful secrets in the game and can change the relationships of many men. If you do make it back alive, your reward is a script to learn (or sell) and honor certificates with your school.

Log in and begin your training to steal or protect scripts. Age of Wusuh’s free-to-play excitement is available now, and will be at GameStop on April 23rd!
