Pax East 2013 eSports Panel

Pax East 2013 eSports Panel

By Shannon Doyle (Leliah), OnRPG Elder Scribe

We arrived nearly 40 minutes early expecting huge lines for the Wargaming hosted eSports panel. Twenty minutes into when the panel was supposed to begin and there were about 30 of still waiting. That was when the PAX Enforcers let us know why we were still standing around. The panelists weren’t there. In fact no one knew where they were! We had been expecting Jeremy Monroe, General Manager of Wargaming America, and Caleb Fox (aka lord_farquad), Head of eSports at Wargaming America. Instead we were invited to go in and sit, and even discuss the topic on hand if we wanted. Four men jumped at the opportunity to sit in the panelist chairs for what turned into a discussion on all things eSports.

Topics discussed ranged from the legitimacy of eSports as a serious competitive sport on the same level as more popular sports to ways to make eSports more accessible to the masses. It was generally agreed by all that right now eSports are becoming more mainstream but there are still hurdles to overcome.

The theory was put forth that if people grew up with the exposure to eSports as most currently grow up exposed to baseball or football that there would be more interest in it and expansion would happen faster. This would be the key to getting rid of the view  that eSports aren’t a real sport. An exhibitor in the crowd pointed out that right now eSports aren’t inviting to people who don’t know about the game being played. He used the example of his wife not sitting down to watch a match of League of Legends like she would a major sports event. And as a result he is less likely to watch it as well.

Firefall was mentioned as one of the upcoming eSports titles to watch. This comes thanks to the unique integrated broadcasting abilities that Red 5 have highlighted from early on in the development process.

It was also suggested that the eSports participants themselves need to get more involved. Loyalty breeds the desire to watch. If a fan has no interaction with the person they’re so fond of there is less likely to be interest and that means they’re less likely to continue to watch or to pay to attend eSporting events. So basically the athletes need to take advantage of their celebrity through things like Twitter or Youtube to feed their celebrity status and help it grow.

A lot of very interesting ideas came out of this small gathering of fans. It was a shame that the Wargaming panelists weren’t there but out of the ashes came a jewel of a discussion. The four impromptu panelists did an amazing job considering they had walked into the room as fans meaning to watch two experts in the field discuss the future of eSports. Whatever the future of eSports will be I look forward to seeing if any of the ideas put forth at the panel actually happen. Or perhaps Wargaming’s attendance and the mostly empty room says more about the future of eSports than what was said at the panel? Only time will tell.

PAX East – Dishonored DLC: Knife of Dunwall Early Look

PAX East – Dishonored DLC: Knife of Dunwall Early Look

By Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-in-Chief

So you’re probably a bit surprised seeing Dishonored coverage here at OnRPG. Well when we booked our appointment at PAX with Bethesda to get Elder Scrolls Online coverage and they mentioned that the Knife of Dunwall DLC would be playable in the same location, who was I to say no? Especially with Ardua and Leliah on the scene to cover ESO for me,  I took my chances and went outside my comfort zone to play a non-MMO and let me tell you, Dishonored remains the top of my list for the ultimate methodical action stealth title on the PC and this DLC is only making things better. And based on what I’ve been reading on our community’s forums, you guys are tired of MMOs and could use a single player break for a change!

So before I hop into describing what’s new with the DLC and why I absolutely couldn’t remove the grin from my face despite dying every 5 minutes playing, I have to give a warning. The Knife of Dunwall DLC is balanced to cater to the chiseled veterans of the original content. Throw someone like me who has only spent a good three hours playing Dishonored and expect to see a massacre against the challenges waiting in this DLC. The enemy AI has been improved dramatically and you’ll find yourself getting into plenty more combat scenarios than in the previous version even if you’re attempting to play the stealthy route. Luckily the new playable antagonist Daud is no spring chicken when it comes to getting the full use of the Outsider’s Mark, and players will find quite a few new tricks up your sleeve that Corvo only dreamed of utilizing.

But while I’m not looking to spoil all the surprises (cough Arc Mine cough), one particularly gnarly advantage Daud carries over Corvo is the backing of his assassin organization, The Whalers, and his incredible information network. The Whalers offer some interesting story telling functions in that you might gain advantages such as when the second in command of the Whalers threw me a free Rune at the beginning of the mission demo I tested out. She will also jump in to back you up in particularly epic fights, and you can summon other members of your assassin faction on demand when you’re really in a pinch.

The information network on the other hand seems like a bit of a story tool to opt out of giving Daud an official base to return to between missions as was the case in the original Dishonored. At least on the surface. The reason I don’t want to fully knock it is that one, you do get to check out Daud’s base at an advanced point in the DLC, and two, it offers an explanation for a sweet new feature in which you can purchase “Special Favors” for missions.

Special Favors are nice little add-ons that could almost be considered cheats to make your life slightly easier, save you time, and occasionally keep you alive. They might be something small like a guard writing the code to a vital safe on a brick way at a specific location, to something more noticeable like starting with a keycard to a warehouse you’re breaking into. If you’re willing to dish out a bit more money, you can even get some dangerous work done for you ahead of time like disabling alarms and traps that allow game changing short cuts in your goal of completing a mission. This all comes at the price of slowing the progression of your character’s arsenal though so choose carefully.

The other part of this DLC that just enamored me from the perspective of a creative writer is the way they are going about doing this story. The Knife of Dunwall isn’t a continuation where the game ended with Corvo. The opening scene is the assassination of the empress, played out with the narrative and from the perspective of Daud and his motley crew of half man, half flock of crows assassins. And just like Corvo, you’ll quickly find yourself face to face with the Outsider to let you know that you’re playing with the big boys now and if you’re unable to figure out his extremely vague clue about Delilah then you can kiss your ass good-bye.

And as a lover of good stories, I’ll leave it at that without spoiling things any further. Happy hunting friends come April 16th.

Scarlet Blade On Track to be Aeria Games’ Biggest Launch Ever

Scarlet Blade On Track to be Aeria Games’ Biggest Launch Ever

Scarlet Blade has already proven to be a big hit for Aeria Games, a leading global publisher of free-to-play online games. The premier mature massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) has now begun open beta, following a resoundingly successful closed beta period in which players flocked to the game in droves.

“This is a great milestone for Aeria,” said Lan Hoang, founder and CEO of Aeria Games. “Scarlet Blade’s success is a perfect example of how far the company has come since we began in 2006. The combination of the game’s unique visual style and cutting-edge PvP features has already created a massive fan base, and this is now poised to be our most popular title for the foreseeable future.”

Tens of thousands of players participated in the closed beta, collectively logging over 1,000,000 hours in the game and creating over 300,000 characters during the two-week period. Many more players are anticipated to join the battle to reclaim the Earth in open beta, which will not be subject to a database wipe when the game transitions to an official launch.

Fan-favorite features in Scarlet Blade’s closed beta included the instanced PvP battlegrounds of Janus and Turnpike, along with the open-world PvP zone, Caergate. Hundreds of players from both factions competed at all hours of the day to kill the coveted world boss in Caergate known as Titan, the ultimate PvP challenge in the game which drops highly exclusive sought-after loot.

The Delilah Club, Scarlet Blade’s very own nightclub, also proved to be an extremely popular destination among closed beta participants, offering players a unique social hub where both factions can relax and get a respite from the intense PvP action.
